[Q] Facebook App! AHHHHH! - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I hope this is in the right section and if not.... could a moderator move it for me! I am a noob to XDA. (I am not a noob to hacking and roming and such). With this said, I updated several friends phones with the newest Cyanogen 9 6/25. Of course, the Facebook app is not working with Google sync. It swirls like its trying and then stops. However, my friend got his to work, and all his facebook friends statuses, numbers and pictures all synced to his phone. I CANNOT understand how he did it and either does he! Ive tried several third party apps such as HAXsync and friendcaster... They all swirl like theyre trrying, and THEN stop and dont put ANY contacts in. What could have been the deal? Any help would be great.

I think Facebook sync should work, and I can guarantee that Haxsync will work. With Facebook, if your contact names differ from those people's names on Facebook, it won't attach them automatically. You will have to go into each contact and press join. You can avoid that with Haxsync, as it will do that for you. Just make sure it's configured correctly and give it 5 minutes to do its thing.

Hmm... :/
I wonder whats wrong. I got friendcaster to work finally but it wouldnt work without it. Haxsync refused as well. It would add my own picture but not any friends. I went through for an hour and a half and switched everyones name to their Facebook names and it didnt work. Sigh. I installed GoContacts and I picked only show contacts with numbers because the stock messaging app does not have that option. I heard there was some issue between Google and Facebook that wouldnt allow me to sync my contacts! GAH! Thanks so much!

[Q] Facebook Contact Sync HELP!!!!

OK.. so i come across a second hero that i want to keep stock... I was going thru it and adding things when i tried to sync facebook i noticed the contacts did not sync... the updates work and what not.. and my contact card was updated.. but contacts appear in contact list.. Any help would be appreciated..
EDIT..before i get flamed i have searched XDA. havent really found a solid answer or anything that worked
If I remember the stock people app correctly you'll need to click link inside of any contact that you want to link to facebook.
I know i can do it that way...but at one point in time it would import my contacts from facebook to my contacts on the phone... i would have their emails, phone numbers, etc.. just by syncing facebook... i have heard s few people say this will not work with 2.1 bc something is wrong with facebook and the phone communicating... still trying to figure this out
thats the only way I know how to do it,on cupcake it was automatic as long as you set up the contact to sync when you put it in your contact list originally. I think they took a step backwards in that aspect when the did the update.
almost makes me want to downgrade..lol...i really miss that feature...
The Facebook contact sync should work just fine. They didn't remove that feature in 2.1.
Try deleting the cache and data in your Contacts, People, and Facebook apps. Go into Settings-->Applications-->Manage applications and then scroll down and find Contacts Storage. Open it and Delete cache and data. Then do the same in People and any Facebook ones too.
!!!Warning -- This will delete all the contacts from your phone, so make sure they are all linked to Google before you do this!!!
Afterward, it will take a few minutes for all the contacts to be re-synced/re-added back to your phone, but this may fix the issues you're having and get your Facebook ones in there now.

sync with facebook

this is doing my head in , i used HTC sync to get all my phone contacts over to my new phone from outlook
i now want to link certain contacts only to their facebook profile
if i use FB for htc sense and dont sync all contacts, if i try to find them and do it individually then no FB contacts appear in the search if i sync all i get all my FB friends in my phone book and calender.
same happens if i use the facebbok app, im sure im missing an easy way to just synce with my existing phone contacts only
please help
Not sure if I get what you're after.
You only want *some* of your contacts linked to their FB profiles - but not all? Is it really that much of a hassle?
If it is, then my suggestion would be to use the FB app, and link existing contacts (the middle option) and then for the people you don't want linked, go into each one individually and break the link (there is an icon in the top right that you can press to do this)
im getting all my FB friends birthdays in my calender and i dont want that when i go to phone in the list is all my FB friends and i dont want that either , i want just my appointments in the calender and my phone contacts in my phone book
for the phone contacts only in phonebook:
open up people app.
hit menu.
hit view
disable/enable any contacts from any app that you wish.
to remove facebook birthdays:
open calendar app
hit menu
hit more
hit calendars
turn off facebook calendar
Hope this helps you!
thanks very much i will give that ago
got the calender sorted but still getting all my FB friends numbers in the people tab
think its already sync them all to the phone cause under the phone option or sim option i have 174 contacts and should only have about 40 can i reverse this on the phone and on htc sense as i thik when i re sync with that it will put them all back on
edit sorry not getting them in the people tab but if i hit phone and then scroll through my contacts on the phone dial pad screen all my FB contacts are there ?
yeah, don't know about that one, sorry

Hey Mate I understand what your saying and its one thing thats pissing me off as well. When you go to the dial screen all you fb contacts are listed and their details, but on the people one its just your contacts that you want on your phone.
I too would rather not have every contact persons deatils on the dial screen but I cant seem to figure out how to remove them.
I've worked out how to remove them from people but the still appear in the dialer its a nightmare I want to be able to chose who shows in the dialer and who doesn't
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
please to hear its not just me beaing a bit picky
I also wish they didn't show up on the dailer screen... Just makes everything messy.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
My neither, many of the details aren't complete and I've even got some different duplicate names as some of my friends don't use their real name.
It is a total mess. I think I just switch it all off as my contacts are perfect. Also I don't like how HTC is putting facebook tags in the Notes field on a card, it is now messing up my core address book.
Same here.
I want all my social apps on my phone (Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, hyves etc).
But I don't want all that crap in my contacts (or peoples) app.
I want to connect the people to the accounts I made on my phone, but I want to be able to chose it.
One other thing, I can't choose which social network I want to select the information from.
Some pics are better from Facebook, others from Twitter.
Check the "Only people with phone number" to show in the View options of People app?
It's not people app that's the problem only my phone contacts are in there .It's when you go into phone dialer thrashing every
FB contact showds up

I just deleted the Facebook details from sync settings and use a third party app (Bloo) to use Facebook. I know you don't get to use stuff like 'friends' widget etc but honestly all this social network integration is screwing with address books.

hi guys,
i feel exactly like you. this **** messes up everything. i managed it somehow to get all the facebook, skype contacts out of the phone app. but i dont know how. i was messing arround on the weekend, and was syncing for and backward and deleting and resyncing everthing until i got it how i liked it. but it dont know anymore what how.
but a good alternative for a contact app with social networking integration is contapps. Its not perfect yet, it s still in development and there are some new features coming.
because the goal of the app is to interact with social networks without messing up your phone contacts.

FB Contacts Don't Sync W/ GE ROM

So I installed the Google Play edition ROM, from bigxie. And since I can't post in that forum with less than 10 posts, I have to ask here.
I'm unable to get my Facebook contacts to sync into my phone. I've tried removing the account, and even reinstalling Facebook. I was wondering if anyone else was having this issue.

use haxsync
I'd kinda like to get the phone working the way it's supposed to work rather than downloading an app for it.
Facebooks contacts, at least for me, have never synced with vanilla android. Only way is to use a third party app.

As notown said above, you have to use an asp to sync contacts. Haxsync is my app of choice
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
FB & Google haven't played well together (on purpose) since either 2.3 or 4. Haxsync works perfectly to get around the contact sync issue.
So yeah, you're not "using an app to get the phone to work correctly", you're using an app to fix Facebook being a bunch of jackasses. It's "working correctly" by not syncing in the first place.
Oh alright. I just figured since they synced in Sense they would sync without it.

Empty Duplicated Contacts Read Only?

Ok I've done some digging and can't seem to find anything with my exact problem.
Yes I have looked up duplicated read only contacts BUT everyone seems to have this issue with contacts synced from another app. Mine is no.
Got this baby this past Sunday (found out that I can upgrade 7 days early so of course I did it. Love the phone and think I will be okay without root. Got Helium backup to backup my data. Only thing left is for them to add a Restart in the power menu then I'll be fine with no Root. OH and they need to get Lolipop out ASAP)
But ever since then I've been having this issue. I've been having new contacts made, same name as a contact I have, but with not info (most of the time. Sometimes it has their number in it). Now here is where it gets weird.
They are Google contacts that it says are saved under my Gmail. I go to Gmail, No duplicated contacts there, I try to delete, says they are read only and can only hide, AND it seems like the contacts that are getting duplicated are contacts that I seem to call most often. I have all other apps and their contact sync turned off so I know it's not an issue with them, and since they are saved under Gmail and when I turn off the local Phone contacts they are still there so I know they are not local saved/SIM contacts.
If anyone has any suggestions let me know. I felt like I had this issue loooooong ago with another phone but pretty sure it was back when Facebook synced its contacts and I had to link them.
I'm a savvy guy and know my way around Android.
Thanks
Ok well i ended up getting it myself.
For people with this issue:
Turn off google contact sync. Then go to apps in settings and then look for the contact storage app. Force stoo the act and clean all data. Check contacts to make sure its empty. Then enable google contacts sync.
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app
Contacts in Android are stored in a database, and as they come from multiple sources (synced from Google, Facebook, Whatsapp, LinkedIn and copied from SIM or stored as "local phone" contacts...) it's easy to have multiple instances of same contact with different info or even duplicates. Contacts app let you "join" multiple contacts from different sources so they will appear joined in your contacts list, but they will still be stored inidividually in the database.
Anyway, there are multiple apps that let you manage your contacts at a deeper database level. With MiniContacts https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brapeba.minicontacts you can see all raw contacts one by one showing its original account source (group). And you can delete all contacts from a source (i.e. those coming from LinkedIn, or Facebook) or choosing manually those you don't want. Notice that if you don't disable the syncronization with the source those deleted contacts will reappear again. So, first disable syncronization! If you want to delete the contacts permanently from everywhere instead of just from your Android database, go to the source (LinkedIn, Facebook...) and delete them there.
Hope it helps...

I could kiss you right now. I have been scouring the internet and downloading apps for hours trying to figure out how to fix "read only" and "can't be deleted" contacts on my second replacement dud Turbo 2. Duplicates galore, and they wouldn't go away. Thank you, thank you, thank you! No more Verizon Cloud - that really messed it up both times. Merry Christmas! :good:

The app Simpler Contacts can merge duplicate apps. I've used it on friends' phones to do that.
Of course, Simpler Contacts also would like you to keep using their app and even their backup service, and they have a Dialer app too. But you don't need all that. I just use Simpler Contacts once in a while to check for duplicate contacts.
But this solution above is good too.
I also used Simpler Contacts to export all contacts from a "local" account. Helped to friends do this when they switched from iPhone to Android and the carrier store exported all their iPhone apps to "local" phone account -- which is STUPID. All the contacts need to synced with Google.

Massive GMAIL Issue

Guys, I really need help and at my wits end. I left the android platform for a bit to IPhone X....Needless to say I want to use my Note 8 again. For the life of me, I cannot get gmail to sync anymore. I tried removing my google account, I tried a factory reset, I tried adding my google account to another android device...everything syncs like contacts, calendar etc....but NOT GMAIL.
I am at a total loss here as it still works fine on my IOS device and doesn't matter if I use WIFI or cell data. Any experts here with any clue...I'm dying here.
I would also like to add that I do not think its my device as this issue exists on 2 android devices I tried and I can add a different gmail account to either device with zero issues. Seems like something is specifically blocking my gmail (maybe a security or config setting somewhere) from allowing it to sync on the gmail app.
I am starting to think its not the gmail app itself but rather some setting (or something corrupt) in how sync syncs gmail. The issue must be with sync not my devices and not the gmail app because on the same devices, other gmail accounts work fine and other items sync fine (except gmail), factory resets, removal and re-adding accounts, etc do not work

You would do best to call Google and tell them your issue. I have never had gmail not sync when it is toggled to do so.
@mike3000000,
Have you tried all the recommendations on this page > https://support.google.com/mail/answer/4780745?hl=en
If so, and problems persist, go to the Google Gmail forum and post your issue there > https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/gmail/QGmx0I_lDa8/jZOAbHf5CQAJ

Are you SURE you've gone through ALL the settings in the GMail app? Theres a couple, if not checked, will screw up the sync. Like make sure all your inboxes are set to sync AND notify. Make sure you have it set to sync the last 30 days of mail (or however long you like).
Also go to accounts in settings and make sure all the sync settings are toggled on. Unless Google is having server issues, it's most likely something simple you've missed which is easy to do.
See if it works with Bluetooth turned off. My Gmail app seems to sync immediately (like it's meant to) and also the Google Play app updates complete and install without any delays.
I had this issue some time ago, with my note 8, not as bad as your case, there were some periods when no sync at all, I could verify that the issue was not gmail itself, as I have 3 devices with the same gmail account, the other two always received the emails normally, long story short, I solved the problem using macrodroid to trigger gmail sync every 10 minutes, I know that this is not a real solution, but I have used it for almost a year, as I use macrodroid for a lot of things, I really forgot àbout it untill now when reading your post

How is it obviously still a problem for some people? No one has replied in this thread for 15 months, until you resurrected it just to say you don't have that issue an tell the OP to turn off his Bluetooth.
Who is the OP? He's the Original Poster who started the thread. Who knows if he found a solution, but he obviously hasn't been here in 15 months, so my guess is he either solved it or gave up on it.

Because I am one of those "some people". Obviously. And I do have this problem. Obviously, otherwise I wouldn't be searching for a fix or offering my suggested one.
If resurrecting an old thread bothers you so much why bother replying.

It doesn't bother me at all. I prefer people to search for issues before creating new threads. I didn't realize you were having issues as well, since you never said you were having issues. You actually said you Gmail syncs immediately like it's supposed to, which lead me to believe that you were NOT having an issue. Generally people don't say their phone is behaving as it's meant to, if they're having problems with it.
I thought you were just offering a solution to a very old thread for some reason. I was just letting you know it was an old thread, and the OP, to whom you were offering a solution, had moved on.
Then when you said others were obviously still having issues, I questioned that, as it was not obvious to me. Especially since your post was about how your Gmail syncs immediately and Google Play updates without delay, and your phone is functioning as it's meant to (in your words). Maybe I should've understood you wanted it to function MORE like it's meant to?
Then you asked who the OP was, so I explained that.
And you wanted to know what his solution was, so I explained I didn't know, since he had moved on.
So it didn't bother me. I was merely conversing with whom I believed to be another civilized adult. Sorry I offended you, though.
