How do you plan to use it? (with your phone) - Nexus 7 General

How do you plan to divide the usage between your phone and Nexus 7?
First, of all, right now I have 3.7 inch Desire S. Which is why I think the pair of combination will be perfect.
When the Nexus 7 comes, I will put all my ebooks, comics, movies & shows, pictures, and games on it. Web-browsing will also be done on it. I also can put documents for school to read on it. It will become a total media consumption device.
As for my phone? It currently holds all my music, and I use it as my mp3 player wherever I go. Even with the Nexus 7, the phone will be better as an mp3 player because it is smaller, and I can hold it in my hands and pocket easily. Of course the phone will also be used to message, and talk. 3.7inch is perfect for this, as I don't require any media consumption on it.
Whala, I have 2 devices which are perfect for their own use. 7 inch is better for media consumption, and webbrowsing. Phone for communications and music.:good:

I'm planning on doing the same as you. Unless I can't bring my tablet with me, of course. I'd imagine it would be damn good for browsing xda-developers.

I have a KF and a thunderbolt. How you plan to roll is what I do. A 7" tablet in portrait mode is perfect for flipboard on the throne.

I have an OG Incredible and that sounds like the perfect plan for me as well!

I just ordered a galaxy S3 and now this.
plan on making this my reading and gaming device so I dont have to worry about the battery on my S3 dying.

I will use my Galaxy Nexus for phone calls, texting, and navigation like I do now. The Nexus 7 will mainly be for gaming and reading. The Xoom will be for heavy duty stuff...web browsing, productivity, etc. The Nexus 7 will probably never leave my house. Since it's WiFi-only, it really has no use for me away from home since I don't visit very many places with public WiFi.

You can always tether from your Nexus! That's what I'm planning to do.

Not yet sure if I'll be getting this but I'm in dire need of a 7in tablet. (Had a Witstech a81e that I got rid of about a year ago and I've been without one ever since.)
If I do get a Nexus 7 it'll be for book reading, internet browsing, and movie watching.
If it's able to mount flash drives and the like then I'll probably try booting Arch Linux or Backtrack.
If it's about to mount removable storage AND has a better DAC than my Galaxy Nexus then I'll use it for listening to music. I don't have a very large collection but half of it is in flac and I'm slowly buying the albums that I don't own so that I can rip them in flac as well. That puts my collection at just over 25GB as is.

I am actually considering selling my e4gt buying a little POS phone and using this as everything else I'd need I work in a hospital so there is always a wifi connection there and same thing at home. I really looking forward to seeing this in person.

Yeah, I definitely have that option. Problem is, the battery life on the Galaxy Nexus is horrendous enough with LTE on. Don't know if I want to add WiFi hotspot on top of it. hahahaha Of course, I could always turn off LTE while tethering and just go with 3G...except that 3G speeds here in the Durham, NC area are atrocious. I don't think I've ever topped 650kb/s down on a 3G connection. I could tether it to my Xoom, which is much better on battery when LTE is on, but if I'm going to bring my Xoom out with me, why do I need to bring the Nexus 7 too, ya know? haha

Nah, you'd want a 10.1" tablet for HD porn viewing...gotta see all that girl on girl stuff in the most intimate detail possible. LOL

I gonna use this for everything except for calls and texts. Where ever I can't find WiFi, I'll tether.

I'll use my Nexus S for calls, texts and music and the Nexus 7 for everything else.
I'm hoping the 5 month wait endured for the Nexus 7 will be worth it.

Nexus 7:
Reading, games, web browsing, gtalk/skype and email checking at home with the nexus 7
Movies when on the road the Nexus 7.
Teamviewer to check in on the R+D PC test suite.
Developing Android / Labview integration on the Nexus 7 for R+D at work - start to bring tablets into the workplace for product R+D, test and control.
Windows Laptop:
for overnight trips for video and serious stuff (HDMI out too).
Phone (HTC sensation):
MP3, phone calls, IM, email, capture of photos / video on my , wifi tethering to nexus 7.

Unfortunately (youre going to say.. what?!), I have an HTC One X. Yep, lol. I feel like I should just downgrade my phone, but only if there is a viable option out there at around 4 inches. I say unfortunately because my phone is already large, so it wont be a huge upgrade in size
So between my phone and this tablet, phone will handle of course calls, and everything I do outside of my home.
The Nexus 7 will handle when I check email/news/etc after waking up in the morning or before going to bed, media streaming, gaming (it should be easier to play on the larger screen), basically anything at home not involving phone calls. Most importantly, I plan to bring it to university as I'm expecting to have to stay 8-10 hours a day there.

I'm gonna mount the sucker in my car. Tether to my AOKP i777 for extra awesomeness.

Good luck on HBO Go or MAX Go. Those don't work on anything bigger than phones. I find it offensive that it still isn't available on a single Android tablet, regardless of screen size. I know they just released HBO Go (but not MAX Go, wtf??) For Kindle Fire, but it'll probably be months before they would consider allowing it to run on a Nexus 7. I'll stop there but suffice it to say that as an HBO and Cinemax subscriber, it annoys me that the Go experience is available on the iPad but not a single Android tablet.

Uses of a tablet?

Well I was planning to buy my first tablet with the spare 500$ laying around. While doing some research, I thought " What will I do with a tablet?" . Here are some answers that I got
Play games
Watch Vidoes anywhere
Have Android on a big screen
????
Profit?
None of these answers where convincing and so I wanted to ask the community over here as many of you would have tablets.
Thanks
I use mine for a little bit of everything I'm a huge reader so mostly books. I have a nexus 7 good luck with whatever you get
And if you wanted an android with a huge screen get a galaxy note lol

I used my Xoom to get back into comics. Hadn't read them since I was like 12 and back then I was never able to have a huge collection at my fingertips.
I'd use mine to run Linux and have a full os..... but I don't have one :/ .... guess my note is close enough got to love 5inch screens

I like web browsing on the Nexus 7 better than on my computer.
These are all awesome points but the only thing i cant get past is that i can do basically everything i can do on a tab and more on my phone. Im constantly texting people so is have to switch back and forth and it just doesnt seem practical.

Tablets are first and foremost media consumption devices. They are terrible for productivity unless you get something of the transformer line and cannot play many high end games. Internet browsing, light games, and movies/videos are what tablets do best. They are the portability step in between ultrabooks and smartphones.

Is the Nexus 7 screen big enough? I think the iPad's 9.6 inch is too big, and I haven't played with Nexus 7 till now. Does anyone know a shop where I can play with it? I tried Staples, Fry's and Best Buy and none of them have it on display.
So everyone just bought a tablet to do the same stuff their phones do?

Yeah, I feel the iPad screen is too big also, that's why I went with 7 inch tablets. And the N7 has a high enough resolution that text is still readable when zoomed out.

Bigger screen. The difference between a 4 inch screen and a 7 inch screen is huge.

The 7 made me give up the phone!

Tablets alone has better specs then the phone. With the Nexus 7 coming in at 199$ the phone business was dead on arrival, at least for me. I'm a unlocked kind of guy and I would at times spend nearly 800$ for a unlocked device! That's until I started to pay great attention to the tablet business. Now, I couldn't care less; or should I say, I couldn't kinda care less about the smart phone hype now that the Nexus 7 just dropped the 199$ high end spec bomb in the tech world, I think that I will be sticking with my Nexus S and my G Nexus for the next five years if Google keep dropping 199$ bombs on the tech world with high end specs the Nexus 7. So, what do you guys think?

I to hardly ever use my phone . But i have had a tablet since the launch of the acer a500. Thou it was a bit to large to use out and about. With the nexus 7 it stays by my side at all times. I have even flashed my phone back to a close to stock environment.I use it basically for a modem for my tablet. But of course calls on it is still better then a app such as tablet talk. Which does work quite well.
So with this being a wifi only device you cant ditch your phone completely unless maybe you get one of those MIFI type devices. Then you will be packing around a huge phablet phone . I think seeing people make calls on the Note looks quite silly. But its just me. The Nexus 7 Paired with a nice smart phone is a Absolute near perfect Solution for mobile communications . For me anyway.
I do really enjoy the nexus tablet. Thou i do wish it had sd card slot.Bad decision on googles part to leave it out... Thou i do know and understand there reasons behind it... CLOUD THIS CLOUD THAT.. i think there mind is cloudy as to what Consumers really want... we want our content on our device.. Not floating in the clouds forcing us to use more data from our carriers or Hunting for a wifi hot spot ...
just my observation of the whole nexus experience... Good Luck with your phablet....

Tablet Talk lets you choose between WiFi or Bluetooth. i personally use WiFi just because that provided a wider range. and yea, the app has to run on both devices. it will detect if it's running on a phone, to broadcast the "request". and then it will detect if it's on the tablet to connect to that request.
as a bonus, if you have a headset paired to your tablet, Tablet Talk can even answer phone calls for you. or it says it can. i don't have a bluetooth headset to test this on.

Thre is always a trade off to have function versus battery life. Thou there is a thread on here as to how to tether using Bluetooth.I Have tried it and it does work..
the foxfi app from the android market will help you with this. it has instructions in the app itself if i remember right. I have wiped my nexus since then and not put it back.
I definitely use my N7 more than I use my HTC Rezound but I didn't ditch it 100% because my Nexus only has 8gb whereas my Rezound has 48gb and it's kind of a pain to carry around two devices. I mostly just use my Nexus when I'm at home and my Rezound is my mobile device that comes with me everywhere.
Always using my n7 nowadays. I did WiFi tether it to my one x the other day and it destroyed my one x battery in about 10 hours. But I find that Bluetooth tethering drops out after a while.

But I don't think bluetooth over wifi doesn't matter too much in terms of power, it's mainly the antenna + bad 3g reception for me.

First impressions of Nexus 7

I got my Nexus 7 a week ago (at an airport departure lounge so it was duty-free). I had previously owned an Asus Transformer 101 (with keyboard). The 10" was a little large for carrying around and it was showing its age in terms of performance.
My initial impressions about the Nexus were so-so. I liked the size (the 7" hits a sweet spot). The device was physically unattractive and thicker than I would have liked. I liked its speed (particularly it's boot speed). I liked the screen quality. But it didn't really seem to offer anything new.
But gradually the device has grown on me. Initially, I recognised Jellybean was a nice improvement. I particularly liked Google Now. Then I started to install apps and my appreciation for the device grew. It runs *everything* superbly. It's as happy playing games as crunching spreadsheets. The sat nav is wonderful Google Earth was made for this device. Google Maps is perfect on a 7" screen.
I have a Samsung S3, which is the best smartphone by a country mile, but I still prefer to use the Nexus for almost everything.
The Nexus is an understated wonder!
Couldn't agree more. I rarely touch my s3 anymore except for phone calls and text messages.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I agree, before I had my N7 I would come home with 25-40% battery in my S3 after my day in college, since I've got it I now have 75-85% battery left after my day.
Only reason I'm using my S3 now is because my N7 is in my bag and I'm standing in a packed train.
Gonna sell it and get the nexus 4 I think, touchwiz and Samsung can kiss my ass.

Love the device and I am much the same with my One X, the battery used to get battered, now I use it for music to and from work, texts and phone calls. Lasts a few days now.
Even then, when at home I do all my texting through my N7 thanks to Tablet Talk.
I love it and it is good for almost everything.
I can do my writing on there, browsing, note taking, music, TV when the Mrs is hogging the TV (either streaming show from PC or TVCatchup) gaming, catching up with news. It is great.
Wondering how much a perfect condition HOX would sell for, never had a Nexus phone before and the N7 has turned me into a Nexus lover, can't see me getting a non Nexus device again.
Just curious I have an S3 and am getting the 32GB Nexus 7 next week - are you tethering the Nexus to your S3? I'm looking to tether via Bluetooth as that supposedly saves battery but just wondering if you have put this into practice and what you think.

Yes, I have no idea why anyone would get a 3G enabled tablet since tethering is so simple to do. But then, I don't understand why anyone buys any Apple product.
I use wi-fi sharing or USB sharing if I want to share and conserve battery. But wi-fi sharing isn't too bad on the battery unless you plan to tether for a long time. USB sharing means that you finish up with a fully charged phone when you complete your surfing.

Nexus 7 vs Note 2

I picked up the 32GB 3G Nexus 7 just a few days ago, I also have a Note II which I've owned for a few months. I was wondering for a long while, is there any point owning the N7 if you already have a Note II? Here are my thoughts...
Gaming
I find the Note II much better for graphically intense games like NFS MW, it runs them all very smooth unlike the N7, especially since my Note II is rooted and both CPU/GPU are overclocked. This isn't really an issue for me as I didn't buy the N7 for gaming, but it has allowed me to free up some space on my Note II since I've installed all my 'less graphically intense' and 'smaller file size' games on to the N7 and deleted them from my Note II. They look nice on the N7's bigger screen.
Browsing
When I'm at home I find myself using the N7 more, the bigger screen on the N7 makes browsing the web better.
E-Books
This was one of the reasons I purchased the N7. The bigger screen makes it easier on the eyes for reading. Can anyone recommend me a good pdf book reader?
TV/Sky
Since my Note II is rooted, Sky Go will not work on it. I haven't and won't be rooting the N7 and Sky Go works! I've got the poetic slimline case, which has a built in stand, perfect for Sky and TVcatchup! :good: I highly recommend the case too, it offer good protection and adds little bulk.
Phone/Messaging
I was surprised to find that my 3G N7 which has a SIM installed, can receive text messages! I installed SMS Pro from the play store and I can now reply to the messages. It's won't be used as a phone but having internet on the go and being able to send and receive texts is a nice feature.
Conclusion
I think there is space for someone to own both devices. As I said, my N7 will be used mainly for TV/Sky and e-books, some light gaming and browsing. Whereas my Note II is used more for gaming and as an actual phone. Now all I need is the Nexus 10
I got both and I agree.
Gaming performance is no comparison, exynos quad completely destroys tegra 3 in pretty much every single game you can think of even tegra optimized titles. overclocked my N7 to 1.5ghz cpu and 520mhz gpu and it still can't keep up.
For web browsing, I do admit I use my N7 more at home because of the bigger display, even though the samsung browser runs as smooth as safari on iOS.
agree about ebooks. adobe reader (+ enable gpu rendering in developer options) if you want the smoothest & fastest experience. Or ezpdf reader if you want features.
I own them both, but I still think that 7" is way to small for a tablet to have the same browsing exp. as on PC, so I use my N7 as a phone, Note 2 just for calls so I plan to sell it
I use my Nexus 7 as a school PDF textbook (all 4 class books are on my note 2) and for Tegra only games. I browse forums in tapatalk and I also use currents from time to time. Other than that I use my Note 2 for everything. If I didn't use the N7 for text books, I could easily get rid of it without any hesitation. I still might, I believe a 8in or 10in tablet would serve my tablet needs better. Nexus 10 or maybe one of the new Samsung tablets coming out.
I also have both and agree with everything except playing games. I only do that on my nexus 7. Just got done playing Temple Run 2 on my Nexus 7. I use my Nexus primarily when traveling so my phone battery does not run down in the airport and on the plane etc. I am interested to see they will be announcing a Note 8 inch tablet at MWC in February. Gotta love the Note 2 and for the price the Nexus 7!
The Nook software is still the most functional ereader simple to do a bookmark and use it does side load books as well. I've tried some of the others and there a hella needless extra button presses required to bookmark or highlight text.
And who the crap is reading pdf books ugh epub is the best format.

agree about ebooks. adobe reader (+ enable gpu rendering in developer options) if you want the smoothest & fastest experience. Or ezpdf reader if you want features.

I just want something very simple and basic, which allows me to read page by page and bookmark.

I own them both, but I still think that 7" is way to small for a tablet to have the same browsing exp. as on PC, so I use my N7 as a phone, Note 2 just for calls so I plan to sell it

I think once I've owned it longer I'll have a better idea, but I don't think it comes close to using a proper PC. I've ordered a second monitor, so I'll soon have dual Dell 24" screens, no tablet is touching that.

For games like Temple Run 2 it's fine, but when you try running games like NFS on both devices side by side, you'll know what I mean.

The Nook software is still the most functional ereader simple to do a bookmark and use it does side load books as well. I've tried some of the others and there a hella needless extra button presses required to bookmark or highlight text.
And who the crap is reading pdf books ugh epub is the best format.

I'm new to e-books in general and pdf is a format I'm familiar with. Will look into epub thanks, and Nook software. :good:
A lot of academic books come in PDF format, although I go with epub if I can. Ezpdf is a good reader for PDF files.
Cool reader is great for epubs and is true freeware.
Finally mantano reader works superbly for both PDF and epub but it does cost a few bucks.

I read all my textbooks on my nexus 7 and I use adobe reader which is great because it saves my place in all the textbooks. Even after reboot

I wonder how you can use N7 as a phone since it cannot make phone call. Is there a solution?

All I can say is I love the size of my note 2. I haven't purchased a tablet since I sold my touchpad. But the nexus tablets are looking good. Most of the time the tablet will be used by my kids anyway. This way my phone will be less likely to be damaged by little slippery hands. I just want the tablet to be just as good as my phone for gaming and graphics. Hopefully the next Samsung or nexus will be at a low price with great processor and graphics.

E-Books
This was one of the reasons I purchased the N7. The bigger screen makes it easier on the eyes for reading. Can anyone recommend me a good pdf book reader?

I use Aldiko on the N7 for reading both PDFs and epub books. i find it works very well, and I like it much better than Adobe Reader or various other PDF readers I tried, plus I can see all my books and magazines in one place on the Aldiko bookshelf. I like the way the page can be turned just by touching the edge of the screen, and the fact that it remembers where I was reading in every book without having to set a bookmark, though you can set manual bookmarks as well.
The other reason I use Aldiko is that it integrates very well with Calibre running on my PC, both by USB and WiFi. I keep all my ebooks, including PDF, in Calibre. Aldiko can download books over WiFi directly from Calibre's built-in private web server which simulates an online bookstore. It's really quick and easy to use.
I have both and now want to add a nexus 10

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, will go through each one and hopefully find a reader I like.
I got to try my N7 out today as a satnav device as I went on a relatively long trip. Google Navigation worked perfectly, I had data on the SIM so could download maps as I was going. Just need a car mount that will hold this beast.
Oh and as for adding a Nexus 10 to my collection, won't be happening for a long while yet. I've just picked up a second 24" Dell monitor for my desktop, WOW.

Nexus 6 replacing iPad

So I've found myself using my Nexus 6 for more and more, while us in my iPad for less and less since owning the N6.
I'm highly considering selling my iPad, but am wondering if I'm just still in the "new phone" phase of the N6, especially since this is the first phablet I've ever owned and still very new to me. Have any of you owned a phablet for longer and gotten rid of your tablets? Did you regret it or find that it was the right move?
The only thing I know I wouldn't like using my phone for would be reading books, but I would get a Nook for that purpose, so that's not holding me back as much as just the better experience using a tablet may offer over a phablet.
I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of anyone who has made the switch entirely to a phablet from having a phone and tablet previously.

I have had the Samsung Note and Note 2 and 3 and can tell you that I use both my laptop and tablets far less today than I ever used to ..this large phone has truly changed the way I use computing devices.
Nexus 6 is a great phone with lots of fun hacking ahead !

I thought I would use Nexus 6 to replace my Nexus 7. Sorry, it just won't. It's not quite big enough for me to do that. Movies, reading books, Web browsing I still prefer the Tablet.
I'm going to sell my Samsung Tab 3 7" as I never use it now. The Nexus 6 is perfect for anything I used a tablet for, plus it's a damn sight quicker!
I have an iPad mini wifi only and I have very little use for it now myself other than the screen is big enough for me to want to play games on it more so than my iPad. Overall I wouldn't object to selling it though

I had an iPad and then other tablets like galaxy tabs. Then I bought my note 3 and now a nexus 6. So I sold all my tablets. I use only my nexus 6 and my macbook.
{Nexus 6 - Tapatalk}
I still use my Galaxy 10.1 when I'm home. Nexus for everything else
I use my iPad Air all day at work, mostly because it allows me to browse forums, read news etc on the sly. Lol iPad's are issued to some employees. So it's not noticeable for one to be using theirs throughout the day. But I pretty much use only my N6 when I'm at home or anywhere else.
I use my note 10.1 still, larger content, spen, and its great to use so I don't drain the battery.
Having an iPad is cool because you have apps that are not on the play store yet, and some that will never be
I still use my N7 at home for media consumption, in the car for accurate speed (I have a 71 Super Beetle), GPS navigation, and media, and out in the field for RDP/VNC, work stuff, and communication.
I had a tiny phone before the N6, and as a result, took my tablet everywhere and used it for everything except phone calls. Now, unless I drive somewhere myself, the tablet stays home.
