Should i get a touchpad?

Hi all. Im considering to buy a touchpad for personal uses. I understand that webOS is rather ok, except for the lack of applications to play around with and thus android is there to save the day. However are there any major bugs in the android alpha builds? The price to me is very reasonable. Another thing that worries me is the internal memory, that is if the 16gb will run out fast? Please, any touchpad users just help me to recommend, that would be great!

Buying HP Touch pad and have ICS on it is worth it. After ICS update on HP Touch pad I have compare Motorola XOOM and HP Touch pad they both look same you will lot and lots of money buying HP Touch pad.

At firesale prices? Yes. Otherwise, why not wait for the next wave of ICS tablets to come out?

Its not really that firesale pirced where i'm from... abour 170USD.. but thats considered affordable still to me. But is it worth getting one? As in would i regret once i bought it?

WebOS is under sung. It has some really cool features, and I'm personally hoping to see it grow and expand in the coming years.
That said, there's also Android. But as skypagers fails to point out...there are still quite a few significant bugs to be worked out in both Gingerbread and ICS builds. Including camera functionality, including chat (in both GB and ICS), video playback, including youtube (in the ICS builds), skype etc etc etc. The sh*t crashes and you might get force-closes and reboots...they're not uncommon at all.
But really it's personal preference. If you've got the scratch, just get a 64GB Transformer Prime with the docking station. If money means nothing, then avoid the HPTP. It's high maintenance, and still everything doesn't work. If you're looking for a badass deal on a great tablet that let's you modify, hack and tweak the f*ck out of it...then the HPTP is for you.
I got 2 32GB's in the 2nd firesale and my wife and I both love them. But my roommate just got his Transformer Prime...let's just say that now, I'm strongly considering selling mine to upgrade to the 700 when it drops in a few months.
I agree with danknee, if you can wait and have the loot. Get something that will be less maintenance. But if you can get a kickass deal, which would put a HPTP in your hands tomorrow...why wait?

I personally like web os better than Android. If you install preware and adjust a few things, the touchpad is rather enjoyable. While there is a lack of apps, if you're plans for the touchpad are mostly web browsing, music, video playback, and an occasional game, you'll have no regrets. And if you get bored or find yourself needing more, there's always android.
BTW, I own 2 32gb touchpads, one dualboots with cm7 and the other cm9. Space has never been an issue either. I have all seasons of archer, ugly Americans, bobs burgers, a half dozen hour long comedy specials, and a few gigs of music. With all that, still have 11gb free. So space hasn't been an issue yet.

Thanks for the in deph analysis. I have to agree with what you said there. Understand the new ics tablets are a better choice for now but yeah, money wise is an issue so I have to lower my limits. Basically I don't really hve any uses for a tablet but just wanna get one so as to experience the tablet feel and when time to come I'm bored, I could just sell it off. So high priced tablets are a no go for me. Besides, the transformer prime does not seem to be available in my country yet.
Based on everyone replies, I think I could make a better choice now! Thanks guys!

Consider this: ASUSEee Pad MeMO 370T. For about $250 you get a quad core 7" that comes with ICS. Of course you are going to have to wait to get one like the rest of us until the second quarter of the year. I'm planning on picking one of these bad boy when it comes out.

For what you want to do, no. For learning how to mess around with this stuff, sure. But its not a reliable device for everyday use not yet at least. Wait for the new wave of tablets and get something from a decent company like Asus or Samsung .

This is good advice. I'd also say that even if you do get your Touchpad running Android as well as the rest of us, there might be some issues that will never go away. I'm not sure there are enough developer resources to fix the spotty WiFi, the sound distortion on sleep, the camera, or the dozens of other little imperfections. It's a device for the hobbyist.
I have most of my music collection on my 16 GB Touchpad and still have a few gigabytes left. It's good enough, although you'd only be able to store half a dozen movies on there at once.

While I think the touchpad is an awesome device and disagree with many of the complaints about CM9 being showstoppers, thought I'd share the Acer Iconia a500 is $299 on woot.com. Today only, while supplies last. 32 GB, 10.1" screen, tegra 2 1GHz dual core, 1GB RAM, microSD slot, running honeycomb. Similar specs to the TouchPad, but was designed for Android.

IMHO:
If you have low budget and you are not perfectionist - buy touchpad. Yes, it's not perfect, it still have some bugs in 2.3 but they are minor and overall it's working pretty good. And stable enough 4.0 we will probably see in next few months.
Also check 7" formfactor, if you like it then probably better to wait for asus 7" tablet for 250$.
If you have 500-600$ in your pocket that you don't need, wait for updated transformer prime or something like this

Yeah, heard about that and it sounds too good a bargain too. But does ASUS have good android development around? At least i can see that the touchpad has a ready team of developers right now...
and the $250 is the dual core model..

go for it, not only can u run android but web os and Linux this thing is pretty much the hd2 of tablets, I just picked up mine for 150$ and I'm loving it.

my honest review...
I've never owned an 'official' android tablet. I have 2 touchpads and one nook color. The HP touch pad is a great device. But there are some serious downsides:
1: fit & finish... there's a reason for so many refurbished models. My wife's is hardly used and has a cracked case near the speaker. It has maybe 2 hours of use total. And its been in a case 100% of the time. No explanation HP. None at all. I won't send it back because everything else works.
2: Android is a shoehorn and always will be. The current WIFI and kernel glitch are the only two real downsides to android on the Touch pad. If you use Gtalk w/video chat or Skype also stay away. The front camera isn't working, but it sucks anyways so IMO its not an issue. ICS is the only way to use the touch pad. GB was more stable but ICS is built for tablets and it shows. The kernel being very buggy for OTG is also a annoyance.
3: its a little heavier and a little thicker than the competition. Its noticeable but not really bad. The formfactor is also much different. The Touchpad is square like the iPad and the Xoom, 10.1, Transformer are more rectangular. If you like holding an original iPad then this isn't much different. Don't discount WebOS either. Its a very pretty OS. It has a lot of nice features. I don't use it much but its not awful and useless like some people make it. It is going to find much less use now that ICS brings that killer web browser.
My conclusion.....
The touchpad is still a sweet deal. 170ish for a 10in 1.5ghz 1GB ram 16GB is great. The nook tablet comes close but its more expensive and 7in. When you start getting close to 250 for a 32GB its a little rougher, especially with the deals on woot and stuff. Also compusa has refurb Transformer 16gb for 299 which isn't bad.

Quad core vs dual core

Hi Everyone,
I plan on purchasing a 7 inch tablet for email, calendar, browsing, some light word and excel updating, and occasionally Netflix. While nice to have, I don't think the quad core processor provides any advantage for the apps I will use? Tablets such as the Samsung 2 7 that have a built in SD Card look nice and don't seem like they are suffering the same quality control issues the Nexus 7 is suffering. I had a really bad experience with the Transformer Prime and don't want to go down that path again.
Thoughts/Suggestions?

What nexus7 quality control issues?

Dual-vs-quad is mostly a marketing thing, like the old megahertz wars. For most operations, the Teg3 uses only one core (5th core, see video below) to conserve power. 3D gaming uses all 4 cores, which results in short battery life.
Most tablet use is not CPU-gated, except for hardcore gaming. Video playback nowaday has dedicated circuitry. In other words, if you don't do hardcore gaming, ignore SoC.
I think foremost criterion is screen size. A 7" is more portable, but for productivity (text-heavy) use, a 10" is more suited for its larger display. Would suggest a 10" for single-location use (ie in-home or at-work) and a 7" for mobile use. Best bet is to have one of each.
People tend to ask "what to buy," but a more useful question may be "when to buy." Now is not the best time to buy, as companies are just starting to roll out their wares for the fall shopping season.

I have used both the galaxy tab 2 and the nexus. The nexus is definitely faster and smoother. My nexus had the screen lift thing. Its getting RMAed. We'll see if the new one is better. From the tab 2s I have played with I haven't seen any defects really.

They recently did a poll, and only a small portion of the people had issues. The people that didn't (myself included) just didn't have a reason to say anything.

Mine is perfect, no issues what so ever and couldn't be happier with it. Seems people share complaints more than praise. This is my first tablet and have nothing to compare to but I haven't put it down very much since I received it Friday my phone finally gets a little break. I'm not big into games but I have a nephew that now loves my tablet because of the games. Guess it will be good entertainment when kids come over. Good luck, don't think you would be disappointed with this one.

What problem did you have with the Eee Pad prime?

[/COLOR]I like the nexus 7. Defects always happen with the launch of a new product. My tablet has defects. The nexus 7 is a great deal and their are some other new tabs due out soon that's as cost effective as this tab. nexus 7 will have better support and faster updates. You need to research and figure out what it is you need. The only dual core tab that will out perform the tegra 3 is probably the samsung enyos 2 ghz tab that doesnt exist in real world yet.

I have a Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 with dual core cpu and the nexus 7 with quad core. The performance is night and day. Whether that is due to software or hardware or both, I don't know. All I can tell you is that the dual core tablet is very rarely getting used, and I like the nexus 7 so much I ordered a second one as a gift for someone else. Mine is perfect, absolutely no quality issues, though it did give me a scare once taking longer than expected to reboot. And based on the ifixit rating, and the popularity of the device, this one will be around much longer than the other tablet, simply because it will be possible for me to fix it, if it breaks after it's out of warranty.

Jelly bean has a lot to do with smoothness. Having a Galaxy Nexus upgraded to JB, it makes a big difference.
There is big noticeable differences between this and the Transformer running ICS but I haven't upgraded it to JB to do direct tests.

Think about it, a poll in a place where people with issues would come is not going to reflect the actual numbers. It will be heavily skewed.

The pre-arrival population was already large enough compared to the size of the polls that I find it hard to believe 50% of them would've come from nowhere, rather than having been randomly selected from said population.

To provide the background on the Transformer Prime, I received one with really bad wifi. Throughput was painful from 1 floor away from my router and I had a little bit of screen bleed, but I was ok with the screen bleed, it was the wifi that mad it unusable. I received really bad support from Asus, that was the tipping point that made me return the product.
I ended up with an iPad and it mostly works great, but I like the 7 inch form factor and I am curious if Android will provide more functionality with google apps that I'm already using for my business.
I keep going back and forth, but now I'm leaning towards the nexus as the problems being reported are not being reported as much anymore and this seems to have a lot of development interest.

If development is a big factor for you then get a Nexus and never look back. The Nexus devices will always have tbe latest and grestest softwsre cause it comes straight from google. Good luck with the other OEMs as you could wait months to years for official updates.

I know this post will enrage some people here, but it needs to be said.
Every Nexus phone since the N1 has been a FAILURE, pure and simple. The N1 set the standard at the time with class leading specs, and despite not being perfect, it still made the Android OEMs sit up and take notice, ushering in a new wave of amazing Android devices.
Since that time, from Google, we've had:
Nexus S - warmed over Galaxy S, with no killer features that was lacklustre at the time of release and quickly destroyed by the GS2
Galaxy Nexus - a phone that released with an old chipset which would not have been a problem in and of itself, if the camera and battery life hadn't been so utterly ****
And now, the Nexus 4.
This phone is so close to getting it right - decent processor, decent amount of RAM, good screen, camera is supposed to be good if the LG Optimus G is anything to go by. And yet Google eff it all up with 16GB max storage.
I've been wanting a Nexus ever since the N1, but each time Google puts a hurdle in the way of my buying it. The fact the N4 is such a stupendous price only makes this latest failure all the more annoying for me. Everyone knows the arguments for and against cloud storage, so I won't bore you by repeating them. But I feel like if I get a Nexus then I'm slowly but surely being herded into using the phone someone else's way rather than my own. Does that ring any bells for you?
The N4 looks SO good in every other aspect that I'm desperately trying to see if I can rearrange my affairs on the phone to try and make 16GB work. Get rid of the backups and ROMs hanging around. Trim down my apps, especially the large games. Jettison most of my music. Re-encode my TV and movies to a much smaller size/worse quality. I MAY be able to do it, but it's going to be a lot of extra hassle and constant moving things around. This device is supposed to make my life easier, not give me more work to do. I'm very disappointed.
Finally, I hope Google come out and say one way or another NOW whether or not they intend on releasing larger storage versions later. If I were to buy this 16GB phone and then they put out a 32/64GB in three months that would enrage me. If Google were to let us know that they intend on releasing something bigger later then I would happily wait for that. But I think they'll keep us in the dark, even if they are thinking about doing it - they know that if they were to release something else later then it would be going up against the GS4 and HTC J Butterfly, which is a fight the N4 wouldn't win in a lot of people's eyes.
That's my rant over for now - feel free to agree/disagree/savage me below!!

Try not to migrate your whole life to your phone... Unless it is completely mandatory...
16 GB is actually decent, and should not be considered as a fail just because it doesn't fit your needs

I don't expect they will come out NOW and say that there is a 32GB version around the corner, it'll just put people off buying one one release. If it's frustrated you that much and you need the space then I'd just wait a few months. At worst they don't release one and you will probably be able to pick a 16GB up for slightly less than the release price.

Have you seen the price of this phone you silly boy...:silly: , compare the price and what you get compared to all other similar spec devices.

There are so many people saying the same thing that I'm hopeful it will get brought to Google's attention that loads of people WANT to buy this device but NEED more storage space.
Sorry, but if they had announced a 32GB option then this device would be being hailed by almost everyone as the best thing to happen to Android ever (what with the specs and aggressive pricing). Instead, it just has a large portion of its target market banging their heads against a wall...

I'm going to have to agree with the OP. The same people that are praising this phone have been knocking Apple for such lacking features in the past including no expandable storage, no removable battery, no LTE. Amazing how cool it is that this device doesn't have these features...

I'm not going to go into the reasons why I would like more space as it's been covered over and over in other threads.
The point of this thread is to ask why Google seems unable to spec a phone that is ahead of the curve and also meets the needs of most of its target market, without jumping through hoops like USB-OTG for this, or buying an extended battery and putting up with a rubbish camera on the G-Nex.

So you call the latest S4 Snapdragon Quadcore processor decent? Two gb's of ram is only decent? Please show me any phone which can muster those kind of specs, especially in that price range.
Also, the storage space of 16 gb's in my opionion should be enough for the average user. How large part of the main public do you really think store roms and nands on their devices?

Simple economics suggests that to make a device with such powerful specifications and make it available for under $300, you need to cut your costs somewhere. I would rather have 8 or 16GB of storage space than have a subpar screen, processor, or inadequate RAM. There is a specific reason why Google no longer wants a microSD card, and they have publicly stated why since 2010. Come to terms and accept it as a viable compromise, or just don't purchase the Nexus 4. The android ecosystem is large enough to make everyone happy.

If it had them people would complain about price size and battery life..

16GB won't work for you on the Nexus 4, but you seem to really like the Nexus One which had 512 MB, a good bit of which was taken by the OS.
Edit: Wikipedia says 190 MB for applications

Did I make a good decision getting the N7?

I recently purchased an N7 but at the MWC I saw ASUS announce the Fonepad.
I would love if I could use my N7 as my every day phone.

Well, obviously newer tabs....except cheapo ones, are gonna be better.
If you wanna spend 300....you made a great decision. If you can spend much more, then no you didn't.

I bought the N7 last week and ended up returning it. I'm trying to transition from an iPad to an Android tablet and found the screen quality on the N7 to be lacking. It's an excellent low-end tablet, but the screen quality is nowhere near the iPad.
Right now I'm going to either
a) Get a Nexus 10, OR
b) Wait until Mid-May to see how the refreshed Nexus 7 will turn out.
I love the size of the N7, and I already have a tablet for the moment, so I'm thinking I may choose option b. I also fear that if I end up purchasing a N10, it'll have some amazing hardware refresh in the next 4-5 months and I'll end up getting ticked off.
Since I already have a tablet of some sort, it's easier for me to wait a bit. If someone needs a tablet NOW, I'd suggest the N10 to them.

Low end? Its specs still stand up or beat most newer 7" tablets.
For 7"....not much that's better...the low price is a bonus.
If you're gonna talk 10"....its apples and oranges. They can pack more tech into their bigger size...obviously. Also...some people don't consider 10" cause its too big.
If someone is afraid that something better will come out....that WILL always happen. So better not buy anything....or maybe just rent...so you can upgrade at will!

Probably a poor choice of phrasing on my part (I'm battling a head cold and can't think straight).
The internals are excellent, but the screen isn't great. The screen is on-par or better-than tablets in that size range, but it's not as good as a larger sized tablet. Since the size isn't a major issue with me, I have the luxury of being able to compare the larger screens to the smaller ones. I don't expect them to cram the resolution of an N10 into an N7 though.
My particular N7 also had very washed-out colors and very bad backlight bleeding at two corners. Hopefully any refresh that is done will fix quality issues like this.

I think the screen is fantastic - no issues here.

You could always use Google Voice and GrooveIP together. I use mine as a house phone with that combination while I'm at home. A Google Voice account is free and GrooveIP Lite is free on the play store. There is also a paid version but the free Lite version has everything you need. Use the Google Voice app for texting. All free on a Wi-Fi connection.

The N7 forum is probably the last place you'd ask if you made a good decision. I'd venture a guess that most people would confirm that you made a wonderful decision in purchasing one, regardless of what for.

A bit of good old fashioned research would have answered all questions you have asked here. .
You have bought a quad core, tegra 3 running device which is still quite powerful. It will do whatever you ask it too generally, and it will do it well. I bought mine for £169.99 if i remember correctly, for the 32gig version. If you take all this into account, then go ahead and use it, you`ll find yourself amazed at how good it is, versus value for money, there is nothing better.

Sales figures also confirm why it is such a good device...if your expecting snapdragon 4/ 2 gig ram type hardware then obviously stay of the crack. Respectively, nobody can deny that it is fantastic value for money.

As long as you don't need a rear camera I would say get the nexus 7. Absolutely amazing.

You made a good decision with the information that was available at the time. Don't beat yourself up about it.
I like the direction things are going and I think we will see more 7" tabs with small bezels and voice integration. People get pi$$ed at teh idea of using it as a phone, but like I keep saying you don't have to use it as a phone, its just nice to have additional options.

I find the Nexus 7 to be a blast. It's so much fun getting to experiment with other developer's ROMs on the latest form of Android. Of course there are always updates to be released, nothing's perfect. The Nexus 7 is definitely a good choice considering what other Android tablets are floating around in the market.

I don't see why people would be angry about using a 7" tablet as a phone. We already have a 6"1 phone out now. Heck, we'll see 7“ phones pretty soon.

Thinking about buying one

I'm thinking about buying anexus7 . do you guys think it is still a good buy? Should I wait? I like the idea of a nexus 10 but the dual core CPU compared to a quad to me does not seem right. Suggestions?

Quad core does not 'always' mean better than dual core. If I had a chance (the money) to buy a nexus 10, I definitely would.
In my opinion android isn't even optimized properly for quad core, its not needed.... My nexus 7 VERY rarely needs to put use to more than two cores. The two cores of the nexus 10 are powerful ones
Not saying the nexus 7 isn't still worth buying. If I didn't have a nexus 7, I'd still end up buying one its a great device and does everything I need easily, while having a smaller screen size. (Which is perfect for me)

Honestly ....people keep asking this, and its up to you. I bought one at Christmas cause its cheap and arguably the best 7" out there.
Budget, desperation and size preferences make this an apples to oranges discussion.
Not being a Dink, but seriously ....read the many threads that exist with the same question. Might help you.
People have stated their opinions on this in lots of similar threads.

I got my nexus about 3weeks ago. I do love it. But i got my so the samsung galaxy tab 2. It has things likw better. It is dual core vs quad. Bur i dknt feel any performance difference. It has sd card slot. 2 cameras. Both are better than the one camera on nexus.

^ this. already into march, a case could certainly be made for holding off a few months until new devices are unveiled, like the much anticipated successor to the nexus 7 (this would be my course of action if i didn't already have an n7). but if you need a tablet now, you can't really beat throwing down $200 for this beast.

I disagree on the N10. Power wise, the Dual core snapdragon is faster... but since it is pushing that insane resolution, it is about the same speed, or laggier, then the N7.
This is why I think uber high resolutions are a waste. Useless number game with no benefit. Just a waste of resources.
The N10 has some nice features like HDMI out but 7" and price is right on the N7. The N7 has a super high DPI. Don't upgrade something that doesn't need upgrading.
This is why the Transformer 300 is faster then the Prime, different res.
I'd buy the N7 again... and I did. We have 4 of them. And I just bought 30 for a job.

I'm in the same boat. I know I definitely want a Nexus tablet to replace my crappy PlayBook but I think I'm going to hold off to see what is unveiled at Google I/O before making a decision. If a successor is released I will buy that instead.

I was thinking about selling my TF700+Dock for a Nexus 7, but then again the Nexus 7 Successor should be coming out later this year. May just wait for that.
Will miss the Transformer though because of the keyboard dock (extra batt life) and it propping the screen up for viewing. Just couldn't stand the laggy IO of the TF700 though. I was reading a few other threads on here about the current Nexus 7's IO being a bottleneck, but I'm sure it's nowhere as bad as the TF700s.

I agree! I love the size of this. It's basically pocketable, even with the Sharkk keyboard case I bought. I haven't touched my iPad in three weeks since I bought it.

What's with all these "Should I buy?" threads?
Look. If you want to buy it, buy it. If you don't, then don't. How are we supposed to know your needs and what you'll be using it for? Watch some videos (there are around 3 million on YouTube) for the N7 and make the choice yourself. It's just a $200 tablet, not an Aston Martin DBS.

Hi, after owning the asus TF201 for over a year now, I also wanted to change to the nexus 7 3g.
I had several problems with the TF201 (laggy wifi, laggy bluetooth, no gps, bad overall performance). During the last year I started hating asus for this design flaw.
Now i noticed, that the N7 is also produced by asus. Should I really try another product of this company?
However, yesterday I wanted to set my order.
Fortunately I found some posts about a stuttering when streaming the audio by bluetooth and additional wifi usage. Some have this stuttering, some others report that their wifi-speed drops near zero.
For me that all sounds like the same strange problems I had with the TF201 (always thought the only reason for my problems was the aluminium-case of the TF201).
Now I'm really dissapointed. The benefit of the N7 3G would be the mobility and the additional connectivity.
I also know that the nexus is a really cheap device. Nevertheless the main-functions should work.
What do you think is the reason for this bluetooth audio stuttering? Software based or really a crappy hardware (I trust asus wouldn't mind).

It all depends. I don't remember reading about a lot of people having Bluetooth problems on a stock device. Those of us who have it are the ones usually on custom ROM's. For example I'm on Paranoid Android 3+ and it's known to have Bluetooth issues. There is also a fix for it but I didn't bother as I never use Bluetooth.
Bottom line is, most people don't have these problems. What you're reading here is a great majority of people who only have problems. That's why they're here, because they're looking around for help. Millions of users I'm sure are perfectly happy with their N7's.
