Nexus 7 & Jelly Bean support USB audio docks - Nexus 7 Accessories

This should bring us a lot of new accessories in the long run. I could see manufacturers coming out with adapters to fit micro-usb and apple 30-pin dock connectors on the same device.

Seems more future proof than iPhone docks and accessories. Especially if Apple moves to a smaller dock connector as rumored. Micro USB will be around for a while.

Never understood the point docks unless as a bedside alarm or similar especially those who then control the phone via a remote - why??? I use bluetooth to stream because then you have all the controls at your fingertips ie the phone!

well if the new phones start to use this then we call can just hook up our phones to our car aux ports. I have my ipod like this now. I use a digital out to aux that also has usb power so I can charge the ipod. If we can get this for android, I would love to change over to a android player for my car.

Samsung Galaxy Tab RCA cable review

I'm back again with another review. This time I took a look at the official Samsung RCA cables for the Galaxy Tab. Make sure you watch my full review and for those who like to read, I know there's still a couple of you out there, I have a short summary at the bottom.
http://www.youtube.com/v/kgBDaZgM2Mg
Since before the existence of the Google TV I've always been the type of person who wanted the internet on their TV. I usually resorted to connecting my desktop or laptop to my TV but because it wasn't as convenient as something like the Google TV it wasn't something I did often. But now that I have gotten a hold of the RCA cables I am able to watch my favorite shows right on my TV via my Galaxy Tab.
I went ahead and skipped the unboxing since there wasn't anything except the cables inside the packaging. This setup was as simple as 1, 2, 3 and maybe 4. I just plugged the proprietary 30 pin connector right into the Galaxy Tab and the yellow, red and white audio/video cables went right to the back of my TV and switched my TV to the correct channel and I was up and running. Everything that showed up on my Tab was mimicked on the TV. The real reason I bought this cable was to be able to stream my TV shows right from the internet. Sometimes I download a show and put it on my Tab then just watch it later on my TV when I have time. There are no additional settings you need to mess with. Its definitely as simple as it sounds. Here's a little pros and cons list for you.
Pros:
-Extemely easy to use; plug and play
-Inexpensive compared to the dock with HDMI
-Image quality is great when sitting about 8-10 feet away
-The Tab doesn't need to be docked so its easy to just pick up to play, pause, fast forward and easy enough to just send a quick email then get back to the video.
Cons:
-Cant charge and output video at the same time. It occupies the 30 pin connector.
-If your sitting sitting 2 feet away from the TV you can definitely see pixelation. But seriously, why the heck would you sit that close to the TV. Are you trying to go blind?
-Image doesn't fill the entire screen on my 42" LCD TV.
-You can't turn the screen on they Tab off while you are watching. If you do, you will just get a black screen on your TV. Best thing to remedy this situation is to just use a backlight dimming app and keep it on the lowest setting.
Overall though, for $29.99 (or lower if you know how to shop around) there's no way you can go wrong with this purchase. I have watched full length movies and a bunch of anime and it looks excellent from 10ft away. So if you want a Google TV-like experience without the need to shell out $299 for one then I HIGHLY recommend picking this up for your entertainment needs.

Excellent review, I'm in the same boat as you as I too like to connect my gadgets to the TV - Here's my question. Having used both the RCA & HDMI accessories, which would you recommend? The portability of the RCA or the High resolution of the HDMI? Or which would you recommend as a 1st buy? Thanks!

I would definitely recommend the RCA cables first. Like i mentioned, I don't have both but I believe I chose the best option. The quality is great when you're sitting a little further away and they fact that it's compatible with almost every single TV is a bonus too. I recently was at a motel and took my wire to watch some shows and it was an older style box with no HDMI so it worked in my favor. You won't go wrong with the RCA cables.

Its not too ascetic having 10 feet of rca cable running arcorss the room.
i would rather be able to remote control the tab with say my phone if gmote works from droid to droid. i am not sure that it does. if i get a chance i will try it.
do you know if the rca cables have drm? i read the dock does. so you cannot dl a movie from media hub and output it to the tc using the dock i will hopefully have a chance tomorrow to try them both out.
thanks

The D in DRM stands for "Digital". RCA cables are purely analog, therefore they don't support DRM.

thanks for the info I guess i will be happier with the rcs cables (less quality i assume) but not "D" for DRM. I dont understand the idea behind them not wanting you to output it to the tv though. If you are paying for or renting it whats the big deal? or is it more about selling you a tv or other device so you can watch your content on the bigger screen???
anyway thanks!
Meh, I picked up my HDMI dock shipped for 42$ they don't tell you you need an HDMI A to C cable as well, amazon 10 feet, 10$. All in all 52$ for my tab to be docked HDMI. More worth it IMO.

I'm interested in the hdmi dock also. Like the rca cables, does it also duplicate everything on tab to the tv? And can you watch your downloaded movies such as from torrents on it?

I wonder if Samsung will make a straight a 30-pin to HDMI (or mini-HDMI) cable. Would be the ideal solution. Since the 30-pin connects to the dock which then outputs HDMI, AFAIK it should be possible?

Ill get my mini HDMI cable today and I will report back once I try it. I know one thing seeing my tab in 62" 1080p will be freaking awesome if it outputs everything lol.
The hdmi dock output everything.
Home screen, pictures, games, movie.
The different to the rca cable i can see, is that if you play a movie on the tab while in the dock you got the movie picture only on tv, the tab will only show controls like volume, seek etc on its screen.
In youtube, if you start to play a movie it shows on tv, and you can continue to search other clips on your tab while the first one is playing on your Tv

The dock have nothing to do whit what movies and different codecs the tab can handle. The dock just output the picture from tab to tv

Just got my dock / hdmi plus rca cable as well. didnt have a chance to rent a movie through media hub and try it but will report back. it does play files that i transfer over to the GT movies etc... on each hookup hdmi /dock or rca.
****Something STRANGE happened though****
I hooked up the RCA cables with an extender so i could make the rca cables longer which i did BUT i keep getting little tiny shocks while hold the GT? WTH? what would cause that and how can I fix? is it a bad cable somewhere? CRAZY!!!

It's not "CRAZY!!!", it's dangerous. Any number of things could be causing it, if you take your cable extender out of the equation and the problem goes away, then somehow that is probably the problem. If you can lay your hands on a multimeter you can check that each contact point on the cables is isolated from each-other, but a short in the cable is unlikely to cause this problem. If the dock is involved then I'd say it's something to do with the way it's wired up internally, either intentionally so (can't imagine why) or it's got a fault.

Thanks for the info! Its not with the dock only with the 30 pin RCA Cable.
What is a "multimeter"?
I will remove the extender and see if it still shocks (which I doubt) but I cannot try the other cables with out the extender. So I guess thats what the mulitmeter is for?
thanks!!

Charge and audio out combo cable?

Any chance we will see a combo cable that would allow charging via usb/and also provide audio out? Id like to run a charging cable behind the dashboard of my car for docking in a cradle, and also have audio out for the auxiliary input to the headunit without having to run a second wire.
Not that running a second wire would be much of a hassle, but would prefer a cleaner look when docked and one less wire when not in the dock
I wish Samsung had put some thought into their car dock. Id be happy to buy the official dock if they hadn't dropped the ball on this one.
It was easy to convert the car dock so it has audio as well.
If You seek on my posts You will find a how to.
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I couldn't find the howto. I would like to mod the OWM car dock to allow audio output, and I'd appreciate any help in such direction.

its a good alternative to the dock even if its not HD
Do I get my music through this cable? Or does it work with combined video audio files only?

well here is the post where the gentleman posts to replace a resistor to get it to output audio to the dock. the only question left is how to take the thing apart, whether it comes apart nicely or i have to break out the dremel...
Not sure if you need the same as I do, but my idea was also to have a USB charging plug and an audio-out jack. It wasn't easy, but I found this:

Moto Car Dock

Edit: Discussion of the Motorola Car Dock. I'd be happy to answer any questions about it and I'll try to keep the Q&A from the thread consolidated in this first post.
Moto Version: The product includes the Moto Dock, USB/audio hybrid cable, Motorola dual USB 850mA car charger, suction cup mount and adhesive disc mount, 3.5mm stereo cable, removable adapter plate for when you are/aren't using a case.
VzW Version: The product includes the Moto Dock, suction cup mount and adhesive disc mount, 3.5mm stereo cable, removable adapter plate for when you are/aren't using a case. It DOES NOT include a car charger or charging cable, but it does have a receptacle on the back of the mount to plug in your existing micro USB charger.
Happy with the dock so far.
Compatible Cases (known)
- Incipio Featherweight
- W/ Extended Battery: TPU Case
Q&A
Q: Can anyone tell me if the Motorola Car Dock obstructs the rear facing camera?
A: No obstruction of the rearview camera.
Q: If you use the 3.5 headphone jack to play audio thru your radio can you still recieve calls with hands free or do you have to unplug it from the phone?
A: You can still receive calls with hands free, you don't have to unplug the audio cable.
Q: Will a Bionic in a Otterbox Defender fit in the car mount? If not, will taking of the silicone part help?
A: Pending confirmation.
No but you need to mount it to the dash...

I don't remember where it was, but somewhere in the options for the car dock you can tell it to stop prompting you with the terms every time you dock it. I know I found it and turned off the terms prompt because I don't see it anymore.
You can stop the agreement from coming up right on the agreement screen itself. Just scroll down before clicking accept and there is a box to check. Its very simple

Anyone know if something like this would get the audio-out from the USB port and allow charging simultaneously? The only problem is it is mini USB but there are micro to mini usb adapters.

Weird....when I checked the reviews on the VzW website...most of the people there are saying it doesn't come with a charger. I'm not at home but I'll post up the UPC/SKU #s when I get home so we can compare. Maybe there are 2 different models floating around? Mine was $39.99, how about yours?

I got the Moto dock from Verizon and it did NOT come with a charger either. It just came with an audio cable, the suction cup mount, and the adhesive disc/alcohol wipe.
Couple things I want to mention for anyone thinking about buying the car dock:
1) The dock software that comes on the Bionic sucks, IMO. Half the time it won't speak directions to me. I Found a good work around for this is starting Google Maps navigation first, then docking my phone and it doesn't open up the crappy dock software that way. I imagine I can freeze the dock software with Titanium Backup and only use the dock for viewing and charging convenience.
2) I got the glossy silicone case from VZW and it fits inside the dock (not very well, but it does). However, I have found one issue and that is that every time I dock my phone it hits the power button due to the case being so large. Also, the power button on the dock itself doesn't work with this case.
3) I read on an Amazon review that the Holster style case (the one with the kickstand that VZW sells) + extended battery/cover will still fit in the Car Dock. I ordered these items late last week and will update this post when I know for sure this is the case...
4) Instead of buying a car charger, I got this TomTom cigarette lighter adapter from Best Buy (It was ~$27.99) since I already use my cars only working cigarette lighter for a satellite radio:
http://www.tomtom.com/en_us/product...-cables/high-speed-multi-charger-9UUC.001.04/
Then I bought a USB cable and a USB extension cable to go from my cars rear seat cigarette lighter to my car dock. Works great. Only issue I've had is the TomTom adapter creates a lot of noise on the power line going to my satellite radio. Going to get a Ferrite core from Radio Shack to put on my satellite radio's power line to see if that will fix my occasional noise/static issue.
5) The port on the back of the car dock is pretty shallow, so some thicker USB cables may not work. I've got USB cables that are the correct charging port, but they have very thick square "shoulders" around the base of the port and that caused a really stressed/weird angle when plugging in the USB cable to the back of the car dock. I ended up getting a different cable thinking I'd damage the charging port over time continuing to use the thicker USB cable.
Long post, but I feel like I had a lot of questions before buying the car dock and I hope I've answered them for prospective buyers.

Any word when the original samsung Car Dock with usb injector is coming out?

I had the note 1 and the samsung car dock with usb injector was perfect, the note slided into place and conected to the usb injector perfectly.
Its good when you use the car a lot for short trips and you need an easy car dock charger.
all other car holders are useless as i need the charging feature without having to connect the usb cable every time...
I cant find the new samsung card dock for the galaxy note 2 anywhere or any dates when it is coming out!
....Any ideas?
No idea, but I hope soon. I want this phone, but without a car dock it's going to be hard for me
Yeah! ive been waiting too. I guess you are not the only one. But will it charge slower for our galaxy note 2? cuz its using 2A charger? can the ciggrate lighter support 2A?

My in-car charger is 3A but it's wired in to the fuse box. Check your fuse box for the cigarette lighter to see what it will take before blowing, I imagine at least 5A.
Any update on this?
This is the single thing preventing me from getting this device.
They have sold over 3 million Note II's and they still don't have an official car dock?
I use my phone way too much in my car to settle for junk. I want landscape mode capable dock with USB injector and a good charger as we all know we should get from Samsung. If we get an official dock I'm getting a Note II ASAP.
PS: does this phone support Apt-x bluetooth audio?
I spent some coin on the HTC bluetooth adapter and it works fantastic with my EVO 4G LTE's bluetooth 4.0 with Apt-x... if it would work with this phone I'd do a jig.

Yes it does support APT-X.
I am also hoping to see the dock soon. I used it with my original Note and am missing it now.

Somebody made it work with an original dock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974048
I think that looks fugly however. Are there any docks that use landscape orientation or is it pretty much portrait across the board with this phone? I think landscape is so much better...
Edit: I see that it is capable of landscape rotation

I don't think I've heard of this protocol. What does APT-X Support do for us?

Standard bluetooth stereo audio is usually terrible compared to plugging directly into the headphone jack. Apt-X (only with compatible devices, example: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Stereo-Clip-On-Bluetooth-Headset/dp/B0057WWK5E ) gives much better quality sound.
Car mode removed on Galaxy Note 2
All, we at iBOLT (manufacturer of car-docks) have been checking into the Jellbean Kernel and for some reason Samsung does not support car-mode or aux-out through the microUSB and car-mode at this time. If you want these features, please contact Samsung so we can put some pressure to have these features reinstated. Technically it would be very simple to do so for Samsung.

Hay Mikael thanks for taking such a close interest in our crasy community's feedback. I would count on a mod being available soon for us to use if we have a car dock with intergrated usb aux out. Although if Samsung wont enable this you cant advertise it but its a safe bet one of us is going to get a weekend itch and scratch out a mod.

At least one person has reported the Note II working with the same cable provided with the S3 iBolt car dock. Perhaps some kernels from different carriers still have support built in? Post in question seems to be referring to the T-Mobile version.
Can you use NFC to trigger Car Mode?

I'm using a NFC tag to open Car Home Ultra which triggers car mode. It also sets the brightness and screen timeout settings.

I used to have Note 1 and original Samsung car mount for it. Now i use that same car mount for my Note 2. It's not ideal fit, but it works good enough. Can be used in both, portrait and landscape mode.

I am not seeing this result, but I have the Sprint version of the Note 2. Sounds like there are some different kernels floating around with different features. I have been able to "force" car mode by getting creative (and a little stupid) and restoring the "Dock Mode" app from my HTC Evo 3D (thank you Titanium Backup) and running that app's "Car Mode" activity as a short cut, but the only way to get it out of car mode at that point is to reboot
I'm hoping for a little bit cleaner method of doing this in the near future.

Looking for a Car dock which supports MHL/HDMI

I know these have most likely not being produced but just in case anyone may know off something.
I currently run the app radio 2 and have my Note 2 in the glovebox but would prefer a car dock that could be powered and support HDMI/MHL.
A neat and tidy solution as the current MHL/HDMI solution is messy and not nice to look at and would be nice to be able to access the phone in times when there are issues with the App Radio.
I recently bought one of these cables.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009N7E6IS/ref=cm_sw_r_an_am_ap_am_us?ie=UTF8
It works great for my TVs and I didn't need to buy the Samsung mhl Adaptor.
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't look too messy when paired with a decent looking car mount.
But I would like to know if your stereo head unit has an HDMI input because other wise this would be useless.
