Nokia claims Nexus 7 violates a Wifi patent they hold - Nexus 7 General

Let's hope this doesn't cause any delays eh?

Hahaha
Nokia trying to be relevant.
That's adorable.

lol this is brilliant, Google should ban Nokia as well as apple from YouTube and Google, funny how all these patents suddenly are used when they might loose customers cause there products might not be as good.

Unlike Apple, Nokia is not out to destroy their competitors. I think they will be happy with royalties.

Everybody wants a piece of the Google pie.

Has anyone actually cared about Nokia since the days when everyone and their granddad had a 3390? haha

Everyone is paying royalties to Nokia, even Apple. This time Google is bad boy, they will have to pay.

What exactly are the "patents" Google's using, anyway? The article never mentions the actual patents.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with getting money for legitimate patents, which these are likely to be (patenting an actual invention, like a wifi component, as opposed to mere ideas like so many of Apple's "patents"). And in fact, shame on Google and ASUS if they didn't dot all the i's and cross all the t's here.
Not a big deal, though, because they'll just agree to reasonable royalties and move on. As some have mentioned, that's perfectly reasonable and how it should work in general. It's also why I'm not nearly as bothered by Microsoft's approach, which has been to get licensing fees from Android makers and otherwise get out of the way.

They are starting to rott at this very moment!
Yeah the latest comments from Cupertino always hit the I'm With Adobe FB group and we laughed hysterically when this one came around.
Denial, much?
You guys crack me up, Are " you " in denial much ?
Apple makes ONE phone yes ONe, One, oNe, yes 1 phone. In the 1Q they cornered 7 percent of the market with a year old phone. With one phone. How many Android phones are there ?
Even though everyone knows the new 4G is coming out in June, they still sold 7% of the market, with ONE phone . How many Nexus One's did Google sell ? 7% of the market ? No !.....How many Eris' did HTC sell ? 7% of the market ? Hero's , MyTouches, Desires, Incredibles ? Not even with Verzion " giving " them away 2 for 1. ( The giveaway phones were added into the survey of course)
Seriously, Apple has sold 50 million iPhones, does anyone not in denial, really think that Motorola is going to sell 50 million Droids ?
Apple is really quaking. Wake me after the 4G comes out and Verizon stops having to giveaway phones to get people to buy them, and then see if the numbers change.
Or better yet wake me when Google sells 50 million Nexus Ones,
As much as we hate it, he's right. One phone on one carrier that's almost one year old makes 7% of the marketshare with a new one already known to come out. Their are soooo many Windows Mobile and Android phones on several different carriers, even if they did sell as much or come close to that ammount, Apple still has it beat with one phone, one carrier, one year old when everyone knew a new one was being released! I by no means even have one bit of likeness (is it even a word) for Apple but they are successful. It's just a fad like everything else. Eventually their will be something newer and better,

If Google was arrogant and conceited enough to put all their eggs in one basket, I'm sure they'd be outselling the iPhone right about now. The novelty is over. As novelty fades, functionality takes over (see Nintendo's recent drop in sales for more information). But the reality is that Google isn't dumb enough to monopolize the hardware and instead spreads their OS across multiple hardware platforms. Even Microsoft knows this. That being said, expect a continued increase in Android dominance.
Apple's desire to control the public and the market in general has negative side effects. As much as I hate Apple, they could DOUBLE their profits if they released their OS to PCs. Instead, they'd rather control the market and eventually face tons of monopoly lawsuits in the future, eventually forcing them to comply with the public desire.
It's sad when Apple fanboys don't get it. Saying that they did that with one phone, one OS, on one carrier means absolutely nothing. The proof is in numbers. You can't say that if they released it on many different hardware units on many carriers then they would dominate. Why? Because they didn't do it. It's not their strategy. And thus, because they chose so, they have now been lapped. I still have yet to make sense of why Apple defends their exclusive contract with AT&T. They could easily triple their profits if they came out with a CDMA version (yet their exclusive contract goes to 2012).
And talk all you want about 4G but most people have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to the next generation. AT&T 4G is at least a year out. AT&T is next releasing a 3G+ expansion, but even that will be behind (and sometimes relying on) T-Mobile's 3G+ network. Sprint claims to have 4G ready (even though all 4G tests in the US show similar speeds to 3G+), but only in a few markets. CDMA carriers will be ready for 4G roll-out beyond the top 10 metros in 2012. But leave it to Apple fanboys to think 4G (maturing in 2012) is months away, especially since they also seem to think HTML5 is months away (2022 for maturity).
You're definitely right. Apple sold ONE phone. ONE PHONE. And took 7% of the market. That's definitely amazing. Think about what they could do if they sold 10 phones! You're absolutely right. Think about it. But not too much, because they were dumb enough not to. And now, they have been lapped. Oops. I guess we now know the part of the body responsible for long-term marketing and consumer satisfaction is actually located in the liver (a part Jobs recently traded out).
Hypotheticals can't be used as an argument. The iPhone could have very well sold 4 times as much as Android and Windows phones combined, if they marketed different phones and different carriers. But they didn't. And so they lose. Unfortunately, Apple and their fanboys won't learn the lesson that's pretty obvious to everyone else.
Sure, it's easy to sell 50 million toys compared to classy high tech devices!

hahaha, a long article attempting to claim closed systems are better. Nice. Considering Google is the leading company when it comes to push updates (balanced nicely without saying "F U" to their customers). Software and OTA updates are still relatively new in the mobile field. Even Windows Mobile 6.5 has a Windows Update function that has never been used! Google pushed multitouch OTA. Who else has done that? Android will continue to gain steam as they cater to developers (Oops, Apple dropped the ball on that one). They will gain steam as Android becomes the popular technology device to purchase, that also includes the ability to do things for less money.
I'm pretty confident in Google. I have a Windows Mobile phone, so I'm not necessarily against seeing different versions of an OS floating around as a bad thing. If you're Android phone doesn't have the ability to update to the latest OS, then go out and buy another one that does. Apple fanboys purchase updated hardware for less of a difference.
It's a shame for all Apple fanboys. It's like Yankee fans dealing with a losing season by talking about pennants from 1923 (like anyone cares about 1923).

Apple, the stupid never ends - CALL FOR BOYCOTT

Apple has patented the look of the tablet, and has already won an injunction in Germany:
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/...-oems-from-building-tablets/14175?tag=nl.e550
Apple has successfully blocked one tablet, and their so-called patent in Spain (a crude drawing) could ban all tablets other than Apple there.
America, boycott Apple if you have a brain (or even if only half). This is what this country fought against, and all you Apple fans, get your frickin heads out!!
Apple is going for technological dictatorship at the hands of an egotistical, psychotic, megalomaniac who is pulling no stops at dirty patent tricks across the globe.
As if the global economy wasn't bad enough, Jobs has to get his grubby little fingers into the pot in a grab to try to take over and crush the entire tech industry and progress across the globe.
F Apple. F Jobs.
I will NEVER EVER buy an Apple product, as it goes against everything this country stands for. I could give a rat's patootie if it is an American company... That just makes it worse!
Well said. I too support your ideas.

I agree with everything you're saying except for one thing...it's exactly what this country now stands for.
But I have never bought an Apple product and I never will.
It seems like every day, A new Apple story pops up with Apple attempting to shut down world-wide industries.
I am wondering when the PC will come under fire? If the legal system throughout the world and this nation is this broken, will they find a way to ban PC selection throughout the world? Their server products have been a flop since their inception, will they go after Dell next?
Maybe I better patent this idea before Apple gets it's hands on it:
A box, with a power button on it, that has microprocessors on the inside in some sort of a configuration that allows computations to be performed, and from applied pressure from a body appendage to said button can cause power to be applied to the box resulting in a display (with potential words or graphical images on it) to activate as a result of the box interaction.

Quick, someone draw a box with a circle on the center, and lets get this submitted to the patent office! Picture plus vague description = PROFIT!
Apple isn't doing anything differently from any other company in the world. They all guard their interests as best they can. The thing with Apple is, what they do is highly publicized. But they are far from being the number one litigator. And the attention they get is because they are an American technology company that is doing business better than the Asian businesses. That alone earns Apple a lot of hate. I will say this, though, the Asian businesses are masters at creating hate.

There's no interest here, and the reason it is highly publicized is because Apple was successful in the first stage of getting every tablet removed from every country in the EU by producing a picture of an Etch-A-Sketch without knobs, and they are ACTUALLY WINNING!!
Companies protect I.P.. Apple is out to play the system for global domination using the dirtiest of patent tricks I have ever seen (aside from dirty IP companies that have been patenting everything under the sun for the past decade, but unlike Apple, they normally get shut down eventually). The worst part about this is that Jobs has made no bones about the fact that he has no intentions of licensing out his patents. His intentions are CLEARLY to eliminate the global market.
There's a big difference between protecting one's company intellectual property, and just being downright OBVIOUS about invalid and anti-competitive patents.

If they are the stupidest company in the world, then why are they number 1 in the public stock market? Why are they still getting so many sales? Why are they beating every other device out there? They know how to design and make a fast and reliable product. No other company can do what Apple can. Just because Apple is better, doesn't mean you have to hate on them.

Apple makes nice stuff. They do. But they charge 2x too much, at least for their computers. They parlay this into a "designer" brand (Like Calvin Klein or Hilfiger etc.) and then EVERYONE "has" to have their stuff. Doesnt matter if it costs more or less or whatever. Sheeple. Listen to the bleat!

Exactly.
But you have to understand that the production of "hate" for a successful business is the Asian companies way of competing. Instead of litigating, which they have no excuse to do because they infringe the products of non-national companies, they resort to inflammatory tactics. It takes a lot longer and is very unreliable, though.

Of course Samsung it suing to get the iPhone 4s banned in Japan, France and Italy.

I have half a mind to virtually slap you. Handhelds, and smartphones, were plenty popular before Apple came around. That's a fact. RIM was just the only one really making smartphones that worked.
I was pretty happy with my various Treos back in the day. Great for their time and they did sell a lot of them. RIM took over from them. Granted the iPhone brought the smartphone to a much larger audience.
I want to scream whenever I hear all the incorrect "Well, Apple invented...." posts that are rampant on the net. If I read how Apple invented "apps" one more time my head may explode. Just because people never noticed them before they got an iPhone.

I'm no Apple fanboy but you guys cannot deny how they changed tge game. They didn't invent really anything. They just made it a mass market. Something Palm and BB could never do because they tried to cater to the enterprise crowd. Apple opened up the door for Android and I respect them for that but they are by no means the inventor of smartphones, apps, etc
---------------------------------
Sent from my LG Optimus V using Tapatalk
Apple and Android took over because they leveraged the emerging social connectivity aspects on the internet and merged that with phone communication. Older PDAs and palmtops didn't have that and so did not attract the mass market because most of what common people want to do is talk at each other. They aren't in it for the neat tech aspects.
Anyway, lawsuits are just another way companies battle it out and protect IP. The corporate game. Nothing new there.
Personally I think it really sad that company's make it a business strategy to go after other companies attempting to ban similar products instead of just innovating and making the better product and letting the best device win. The only thing companies are doing is stunning the advancement of technology, and we as the consumers are the ones whom are suffering the consequences.

Right. I will never own an Apple product, because this has been going on a long time with them. Now I know other companies outsource the same way. But Apple is the leader. Apple has the money to manufacture somewhere else, but they would rather see $97,000,000,000.00 in the bank than see people treated well. It's truly disgusting. It's also disgusting that people pay a premium for those devices. Those same people that buy inferior apple products have the money to search out something that is priced similar to apple products that both do more, and are made in a country with ethics and standards!!!

Comments like these where only apple is singled out are simply biased and unfair because ALL those using these people are equally wrong.

I wasn't intending my reply to be meant personally about you, just the argument in general that some people make of only apple being the one responsible, which was what I thought you were saying, so apologies if it was taken the wrong way.
As for Samsung, foxconn assemble some of their phones too, and have done since about 2008 / 2009, so there is no way to know if a particular samsung model is a foxconn one or not unfortunately.
Foxconns android customers include Asus, Lenovo, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson which I mention simply because as an Android fan I worry when its only apple people notice doing these as I think they are all as bad as each other, and I'm in no way trying to pick on anyone using Foxconn products as I myself have a Sony product and an Asus, and they are very good, but they could well have been produced by the same people.
The problem is that many companies outsource to the cheapest source which will always be one where workers are paid a pittance and their rights are unimportant because the more rights a worker has, and the better their wages etcetera, the higher the cost of production becomes which is why big companies like apple, microsoft and sony etcetera won't build them in say America or Europe.

If your boycotting apple what about sony microsoft nintendo toshiba etc? They use the exact same people, foxconn, but how many people would give up their games consoles or high def tvs etc?
Comments like these where only apple is singled out are simply biased and unfair because ALL those using these people are equally wrong.
I don't like apple at all but I think ignoring the other companies involved, including some android phone makers such as sony ericsson, is letting them off and letting one company a lot of us dislike be our mythical evil bad guy when in reality they are all as bad as each other.

I honestly don't own anything made, that I know of, in a foxcon factory. The only exception might be this phone, but to be honest, all my other htc phones were not from China. My wife's nokia is from Mexico. And so we're her previous blackberries. My computers are gateways from 2005. And I don't own a tv or video recorder made in the last decade. Let's see. My DVR is made in Mexico, and my Atari jaguar is made in USA can you believe it? My pioneer receiver is Indonesia. My hand tools are all made in USA, and I buy DeWalt 18v cordless tools because they are the only ones not made in China, they are made in Mexico, and their batteries are made in Japan. My work cloths I usually get at a thrift store, so where they are made is mostly irrelevant, but my work boots are Redwings, and I make sure they are the ones made in the USA. My tennis shoes are new balance, also made in the usa.So I actually am boycotting them all. I'm so glad I did not get an xbox360 when I wanted one now that I know they are made in a foxconn factory. I know there are things you can't help buying that are made there, but you can at least try.

why? do you believe that foxconn is the only company that does that? how are you so sure that in such big factories all over the world it doesnt happen? ever been there?
the only way to be sure that you arent taking advantage of anyone is to do it yourself, but i dont see you making your own motherboard, car or clothes...

Eh, Microsoft is largely a software company, and 360 plants actually have outstanding work conditions.
SO MANY things are made in China that you could use that argument for almost anything.
The real argument is that iOS is restricting, closed source and steals allot of their ideas from other OS and companies. It's the distortion field that makes everyone believe their implementation is cool. Also, iOS is dumbed down for the masses and it's pretty (the only slightly, redeeming quality IMHO).
Not using Apple devices because they are made in China is a superfluous reason. There are MANY better reasons, not to use/buy (from) Apple (devices)

Welcome to overpopulation and under-education. Sad, but true fact is that for most of those "poor" workers, its pennies at those factories or starvation (and US pennies, are basically full chinese dollars, that buy food and clothing and pay the rent, even if you live in a box).
Easy for you guys to talk the talk, but you wouldn't survive an hour that those people do 24/7. And let me get to the real kicker- you wouldn't even dare to care to try losing the comfort of your own shoes, let alone home or anything more significant than that. Just be happy where you ended up in the pyramid and if you make it rich, try to help those masses.

That's why I said try. If you buy from places that have some form of regulation, than at least you are trying. Sounds like you are saying, "well I don't know for sure, so I'm not even going to try" well to each his own, but at least I feel better for trying, even though I might not have as much money in my pocket because of it.

If you read news reports microsoft specifically have been singled out in some. For example http://m.kotaku.com/5875359/xbox-fa...regular-production-adjustments-says-microsoft
360 plants from foxconn are not outstanding at all and if they had such conditions you would not have had ten suicides two years ago nor the recent suicide threats by people building the xbox.
Maybe you believe ms are great employers outside america but they are not.

FBI, CIA and NSA recommend you do not buy smartphones from Huawei or ZTE

Title says it all. What do you think? Should I get rid of my Mate 10? What information is being taken? Are there ways to mitigate eavesdropping or security breaches?

Trump told them so it must be true
It's U.S protectionism .. Huawei handsets and infrastructure equipment are everywhere (except in the U.S.), and to think the company would risk losing it all by spying, really? Why hasn't there been any proof of these allegations? It truly is BS and leaves the American market relegated to Apple, Samsung, and remaining few. And the hypocrisy, where are iPhones manufactured .. hint, it's not in the U.S.

What makes you think you phones are not breached by CIA already ?
From point of security breach and eaves dropping, its all the same. However if your interest is in giving the US intelligence an advantage by having a better hand at breaching than the Chinese government, than maybe you can stop buying Chinese phones.
Same with trade wars, if your interest is in giving US an advantage in trade wars than so be it. As a non-American, i have no such trade war concerns.
I used to say I have nothing to hide. Now I say I have nothing left to hide!
I just happen to find this which makes me worry.
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/16/...l?smid=nytcore-ipad-share&smprod=nytcore-ipad
I also remember folks complaining, in a Mate 9 thread on XDA, about the app WPS Office perhaps providing a back door.
Everybody collects data on you. Seems like more aggressive advertising now due to google.
Data collection probably not limited to shopping interests.
Also very worried about backdoors on hardware.
It seems hopeless.
Don't get me wrong. I love My Mate 10.
Would just like a balance between security and privacy.
It would be good for the U.S government to provide PROOF, EVIDENCE and not only conjecture.

Yes, that would be good. They claim there is evidence of past breaches but chances are many would probably not believe it anyway. Best is to take steps to improve own security.
I think nearly all, if not absolutely all, cell phones are manufactured/assembled in China... not to mention nearly all the parts no matter who the "maker" is are made in China also. Doesn't matter if their headquarters are located somewhere else. I have had my Mate 10 (non-pro) for a few days now and it is quite possibly the best phone I have ever owned. My backup phone is a ZTE Axon 7 which was possibly the best right before the Mate. So I guess the Chinese have been reading my email's and text messages for years now. If you think this is only happening (if it even is) on Chinese Owned company phones then you are as delusional as Trump, and that boggles the mind!
Wow, such paranoia. So you're all happy to be spied on by your own government but get tin hat crazy when agencies tell you to not use Chinese phones? Seriously? As previous poster said, where do you think most off your devices are made anyway? Sheesh
When the N.K. "gonna nuke us anytime now" propaganda doesn't work, start blaming Russia.
When blaming Russia doesn't work, blame Kaspersky.
When Kaspersky doesn't work, tell the people to not buy Huawei or Xaiomi etc. devices.
It's gonna be hard to drop Huawei's telecom equipment since a lot of network infrastructure uses their equipment these days. Funny innit?
There probably having trouble finding a back door to Huawei and ZTE phones. Besides, FBI, CIA etc are as subtle as a cockroach on a white rug. Whatever they don't want you to buy, run quick and buy it!

Was there in the past - 2015/2016 not something similar with the gay phones where the FBI could not crack them and get access to and asked the "fruit company" to provide the software to get access to locked/encrypted phones. They used the excuse that it was important that they had the ability to crack phones used by terrorists...
I believe it could be well that they struggle to find a backdoor on Huawei and ZTE produced phones.
I am sure that the governments have the ability to spy on everybody and if its not the government it will be google or microshaft...
The alternatives are the apple product programmed to slow down as the battery ages and or Samsung products which over time will slow down and or fail due to a mainboard failure, and here I have experience out of 1st hand on my old S3, Note 2 and Note 4 where the mainboards failed due to a eMMC chip failure. Apple and Samsung can keep their crap phones imo.
Yea because the NSA etc can't get in them, no back door etc
First of all, the news shows that the agencies are not really worried about your privacy as a citizen, rather that those phones may be a passive method to learn about telecom infrastructure of the U.S, or even possibly use them as an attack gateway in case of a cyber WWIII.
Now about your privacy:
Huawei, Samsung, HTC, LG, ZTE whatever, all are running Android. Depends on whom you're concerned that will breach your privacy, if you're concerned about the governments, your privacy was breached with the very first smartphone you bought, why? Well, Android is Google and they obviously have backdoors for themselves at least and Google does cooperate with the NSA when they need, so does Apple, so that's one thing. The other concern may specifically be "foreign" governments, which yeah it's possible given how China uses for example WeChat as a way to spy on it's citizens
In short, Huawei or Samsung or Apple, they all are cooperating with some government (May not be directly but through Google).
MONEY!!!!
i would think its more of a breach in the green area, its all about money.....
there is only one thing going on here and that is America being scarred of Chinese corporations...shengzen will overtook every pice of techonlogy in the future. ...and saying that some company is spying on them while "they"(American goverment) does exactly that HAHAHAHA.... what a ****ty claim for them with no proof or whatsoever...well thats how human behaves when gets scarred...u throw every amunition u have at there faces and whis for the best LMAO peace guys

Totall agree, and anyone who believes otherwise should have their head examined. Qualcomm, Apple, Samsung .. they all have a lot to lose by allowing Huawei/ZTE access to the U.S consumer market. AT&T cancelling the launch of the M10Pro one day before CES stinks of Government coercion, which I'm sure was induced by lobby pressure.
