[Q]Getting started with porting: which device to port from and which ROM to port? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Saluton al vi,
I decided to come in the Android development with a porting, a thing that, according to what I heard, isn' too difficult to start. I read a bit this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598713 and I believe it could be nice and a bit useful to port MIUI v4, since I haven't found any versions for our Galaxy Tab yet, maybe using CyanogenMod 9 official RC1 as base (since MIUI derivates from CM).
1) From which device should I port MIUI? Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S2 or anything else?
2) Will I have to change the resolution of every image to adapt a phone ROM to a tablet?
3) Would it be too difficult for a person like me, who have never created or ported a ROM before? Maybe did I misunderstood anything and is a porting a terribly difficult thing? I'm asking this because I've never seen a MIUI porting for Galaxy Tab.
4) If it's too difficult, what should I do to learn?
5) Finally, the obvious question: do I risk bricking my Tab, even if in the ROM there are neither primary nor secondary bootloaders?
I'm sorry if the questions are too many.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1440924

Sorry, but I did it unintentionally, and when I noticed the mistake, I didn't know how to move the thread. Who can do it?
Please, could you be so nice to answer my question, instead?

I'll write the post again in the Q&A section. Could you delete this one, please?

ROMs for 10.1 on 8.9

Hi !
I'm really curious about why I can't use ROM for the 10.1 version on 8.9 version of Galaxy Tab.
Except the panel size (10.1 vs 8.9) and battery capacity, there are other hardware differences ?
Any ideas ?
Thanks.
You /can/ use 10.1 ROMs. The 8.9 and 10.1 are virtually identical.
You just need to swap out boot.img and recovery.img AFAIK. And edit build.prop.

can you point me to the right track
what i need to edit the build.prop?
Here, courtesy of alterbridge86.
BTW, Overcome 2.0.0 is a P75xx ROM ported to P73xx, if you'd want to start on that.

Thinking about the same thing. There is much less rom on the 73xx section, . Is anyone here would like to give more detail on these?

thanks, will start to learn on this
I hope good theme'rs get the 8.9 soon. I wish i had the talent to do it
Actually, I don't think it's as simple as that post from alterbridge - that was quite early on in his experimentations with Overcome on the 8.9. I recall from the subsequent release of Overcome that he said that there were other considerations, which is why the camera was flipped in the earlier versions based on 10.1 ROMs. He switched back to 8.9 bases for the 1.2 version for this reason.
Clearly, these issues were resolved as the latest Overcome is now based on a 10.1 base again. However, I think there are a couple of other things needed that aren't articulated in the thread where he was replying to me on the subject. Anyone know for sure what else needs fixing?
i think - the most intresting problem with ROM - support language
How can add/delete longuga in ROM

You are right. Is much complicate than what they said. I just did an experiment. I replaced the boot.img in one 7510 custom rom with 7310Overcome 2.0's own boot.img, and changed some word in the build.prop. Put it on my 7310. Luckily ,it boot alright, but when the android welcome page(select your langurge ) show up, the screen did't respond my touch correctly, I need to touch somewhere under the target what I want to touch to make it work.
Looks like there is lots of thing I need to know.
I wonder when the CM ICS rom hits the 10.1 will alterbridge86 be able to work his magic ?
Fingers crossed !!
The true is,it is simple as what they said. My experiment work finally. I replace the boot.img in one custom 7510rom by the one in 7310Overcome2.0.
The tweak of the build.prop is very simple. Just replace all "P7510" by "P7310". Add "ro.sf.hwrotation=90" in the last. And All is done. The little mod Rom work perfectly on my 7310.
But I think the success belong to alterbridge86's boot.img and his work, without that, the rom just showed the Logo, nothing else.
By the way,I am going to investigate what magic alterbridge86 do in the file boot.img. The file size is much small than the stock one(half),and what's the impact. I have lots thing to learn
Might give this a try tomorrow. Would love to try a Vanilla rom on the 8.9.
any luck with the vanilla rom?

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Mini / Dart Rom?

Will CyanogenMod roms for the Galaxy Mini work with the Dart (t499)?
No. But in madteam forums there's a cyanogenmod development going on for the dart
Sent from my GT-S5570 using Tapatalk
CWM is fixed and working on this phone.
CyanogenMod 7.1 is mostly working, there is still a delay in the screen turning on with an incoming call, and the buttons at the bottom don't light up. But so far it is looking pretty good.
Also if you are planing on doing the network/sim unlock, it requires the original rom, so you might want to do that before switching to CM7.
Unfortunately the forums are down right now, but see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19936092&postcount=100
I am thinking about buying a dart soon and I want to make sure I got this all right. In order to flash CWM you need to flash the recovery madteam has made because it cannot be flashed through ROM manager? ALso after having CWM on the Dart, does a specific version of CM7 have to be flashed that was specifically made for the dart or can any Galaxy Mini rom be used?
continue developing
ive noticed that development seems to have dragged to a halt on the t499 and i was wondering if someone would be interested in making a project out of this, perhaps continue developing on the cm7 that has already be started, or the cm9 that the thread has been closed on, im not too experienced in development on android but id be willing to help any way possible

Boot2Gecko on I9000 ?

Hi Guys,
Is it possible to Run Boot2Gecko on Galaxy S I9000 like with Galaxy S II? ---> Article - http://www.xda-developers.com/developments/mozillas-boot-to-gecko-running-on-a-samsung-galaxy-sii/
Because I am very satisfied with S I9000 and I haven't got enough for S II.
So do Anyone know howto from SII Update.zip to S Update.zip convert?
Would like to try it too .
useful links
Hi Guys,
I've got some Links for People, which are interested like Trojan38
For Developers ---> https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Mozilla/Boot_to_Gecko/Building_B2G_for_Samsung_Galaxy_S2 (This Tutorial is for I9100)
Official Wiki ---> https://wiki.mozilla.org/B2G
I am not clever enough to Understand the Developer's Tutorial, maybe it can be useful for other Guys
____
Yeah! Sounds interesting .
I will a Mozilla OS
that all sound really Great
so I have just to Say "D'accord avec mon ami Trojan38 "
I am either just a noob
I actually also wanted to make a topic about porting boot2gecko (for i9001).
Actually I think it could be done for sure, the original build is at SGS2, which has the same cpu category as the i9000 and i9001 (armeabi-v7a/armeabi)
Also the resolution is HDPI 480x800 which is also fortunate.
I've downloaded the SGS2 version and extracted it, any it's clearly built on the AOSP environment, actually it looks just like a copy of a AOSP GB rom with an other framework then usual. This is why I think we could actually succesfully port it.
I'm kinda afraid to try it tho, since I have zero knowledge about making kernels so i couldn't produce a working kernel, also I find it rather spooky that dalvik will be deleted.
@poster: it's really more then just converting the "update.zip" which is actually an odin image.
I think we have a pretty high change on succeeding when we just port it like we normally do, my concerns are the kernel tho. Really don't know how to fix that

[Q] GT-P1000... ICS or ... not ?

Hello everybody...
I have a Galaxy Tab P1000 working on 2.3.3 and CWM installed.
I want to go on ICS but, honnestly, I really don't know what to do
Cyanogen, AOKP, Overcome... :silly::silly:
So, what's the differences ? I'm reading, reading, reading... and it seems to be hard to understand what bring each mod instead of installing one (your tutorials are really easy to understand for a newbie like me).
I don't want a mod where something doesn't work. My tablet is working fine actually and I don't want to screw something so... what's the best ICS mod for a P1000 ?
Thanks for your advices (and sorry for my poor english )
Two major problems.
1) best rom thread isn't allowed in xda. Try them out and find out yourself.
2) there is a q&a subforum for questions (but not for best rom question)

I tend to disagree with your response priyana. He is not asking for the "best" rom, just the differences. My suggestion is to read the development thread for each and try them out for yourself.
The best way to work out the one for you is to dive in and try them out.

Well, if your are asking for stable roms, then cm 9.1 and aokp milestone 6 are the options. dont ask for best roms.
I agree with stimpz0r that this isn't a best ROM thread, the OP is just asking the differences between the types of ROM. As long as it stays that way and doesn't become a best ROM thread then it's fine to stay. Have moved to Q&A where it belongs.
In answer to the question, as tiresome as reading and testing can be, don't give up with the reading as it's the most important part of being on XDA as so much information is available. The 1st few posts of the development threads tend to give you an overview of what's included but the main ROM types you get will be:
Custom stock - based off official ROM's with tweaks
AOSP (Android Open Source Project) - based off Google source code
CM - which is a modified AOSP experience with customisations, bug fixes etc
AOKP (Android Open Kang Project) - similar to CM as uses lots of aspects of CM but offers far more customisation options for the user
Ahem... 1st post, 1st fault
I wasn't asking for the "best rom over all the others", but more for a little help to know what kind of rom I have to look for, really sorry for the mistake.
Usually, I try to learn by myself reading on forums or on the net, but the hard part with Android (at least for me) is that a rom can work with a device but not with another who has the same Android version :silly::silly::silly:. It's not like a video game console, a PS3 is a PS3, a Wii is a Wii, no major change between the 1st and the last serie.
Thanks for your answers. I'll keep reading , but this time I'll look toward CM and Aokp first .
We all learn by reading and you'll see in my post I was siding with you
The best part of this forum is how much you learn off other members and the like-minded people you get to talk to. We were all new once so once you pick up things slowly but surely you'll also be able to share what you've learned back with so many new users always joining :good:

[Q] What is the fastest (and the best) ROM for Galaxy Ace?

Hi guys,
I'm using CyanogenMod 7.2, but it started to become painfully slow and it crashes almost every day. So I'm think about installing another ROM, but to be honest, after reading recent topics with custom ROMs, I really can't decide which one should I download. I would like to have an ICS or higher, but if there is a ROM on 2.3 that is way faster than any ROMs on 4.0 and higher, I can install the Gingerbread.
What are your recommendations? I'm currently interested in modded CyanogenMod 10.1, ImaGinary ICS Final and Touchwiz Revolutionised 5.0.
Thanks in advance!

Ok, I get it, but... how should I choose the best one - which is most suitable for me - when people can't express their opinions about different ROMs? Most of the posts in particular ROMs threads are related to some broken stuff etc., so it is hard to find same opinions.

hello, I cant answer your question, I can only give you an idea of what I experienced and read out there. Like all of us, you have to experience, have fun, and make your own evaluation, I begin to suggest you to choose spacecaker's rom , or you can get the stock rom with new kernel, andrenaline engine and Darktremor.
But dont stay with those, try some more a get back to tell us your opinion
Hope I helped

I completely agree with quashqool. U shud search n try n get a first hand experience yourself. Some users want battery life, some want performance and some want UI. So people review different ROMs differently. However I have created a thread to answer this and similar questions. You may try it here

The ROM Im Already Using Is Tw5 JB ROM (4.1.2 - 4.2.1) it is very fast and smooth and good looking ,it doesnt flash the kernel and it doesnt spend so much battery
ROM][CM10.1][S4 UI][UPDATE]Touchwiz Revolutionised 5.0 v2.0 [21.7.13]

I'm using one of those that you mentioned: modded CyanogenMod 10.1 and then on top of it I installed PurePerformances™X.
I've tried Miracle V4 and M'rage. This setup seems better to me in every way, but that is just my opinion. It also depends if you like CM or stock roms..
