Nexus 7 for my kids? - Nexus 7 General

Hello peeps,
I looking at picking up the 8gb version for my kids, as currently they fight over the net book and I wont let them near the iPads, anyone with any hands on experience think these would be up to the vigours of heavy handed kids. I've owned acer product before and never really rated the build quality, mind that was along time ago!
Thanks!

It's made by Asus not Acer. I ordered one for my kids (16GB). Think it will be perfect for them (9 and 11). I currently have an Asus TF201 and am pretty pleased with it. The kiddos also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7 inch). Now they can each have a tab.

The build of the N7 should handle the kids with ease. I would suggest getting a TPU case & screen protector for added protection. I know this suggestion can be costly but I would get each of them one. And tell them they are ass out if they break it.
If you have way too many kids, it might be time to downgrade a few to save on cost. LOL, I keed on the downgrading part even though I hear it all the time as jokes from friends & relatives that have multiple kids of their own.

How old are they? the glass screen isn't going to last long with young kids.

Both begin with A close enough surely?
Im only buying one regardless of the fact i have 3 kids, the youngest is 6 but they are all girls so a little less brutish!
So I may have go get my pre-order on!

I bought a Lenovo Ideapad A1 for my then 4-year old daughter last christmas. It has held up just fine in the last 7 months. I was VERY clear about the rules for using it though, and with a silicon case on it, there have been very few worries.
Given the price, I think the N7 would be great for kids, especially supervised kids

Yeah i think im gonna go for it, to honest for the price its hard not too!

For kids I would reccommend something cheaper with good enough GPU and 10" screen (I know this from my cousin's doughter)

I bought me a 16gb HP Touchpad running ICS for less than 200 bucks a few months ago. I'm going to turn that over to the kids and the N7 is all mine. The Touchpad is really nice for the kids with the 10 inch display.

Let the kids have the toy iPads, keep the Nexus7 for yourself.
Everyone knows the iPad is basically a V-Tech for grownups. Even Apple push it's limiting simplicity as an asset rather than a crippling issue.

I'd give the iPads to the kids. I have mine in a leather case and my 2 yr old has been using it for about a year now without any damage. He dropped it a few times but the case has protected it so far. He has mastered navigating IOS now and can find his way around IOS easily.
Plus the kids can't mess with the software on IOS and you have the option to lock down what you want. They might find android environment more cumbersome and easier to break. Good thing is that you can always reflash the N7.

Wow you must have angels as kids.

My Nexus 7 Experience : (

After some time playing with the Nexus 7 I felt compelled to write my impressions. This device was ordered for my mom to use for web browsing and email.
I read a lot of reviews from several tech sites as well as some forums before deciding the Nexus 7 was the right device for her.
The reviews around the tech sites were almost all positives regarding the quality and price on this device, on the other hand, the reviews from several forum members where not that great.
People where reporting issues ranging from screen separation, blown speakers and death pixels.
Tech sites mentioned the build quality of the device and the almost leather like feeling of the back surface as good points.
Almost all of them concluded that this was the tablet to get at this price point. Some of them even went as far as saying that they haven't used their iPads after getting the Nexus 7 (People Such as TWiT hosts).
All of those great reviews, even from Apple pundits, made me beleive this was a great tablet for its price point. So today we finally received the device. The first problem was noticed as soon as we opened the device, the screen was separated and lifted above the silver bezel from the left side, so much that you can hear it flexing when touching it.
The second problem was noticed when the screen was turned on. Right on the center a pixel stuck on red color, so annoying that no matter what backgroun you use, it still shows.
I own a Motorola Xoom 4G/LTE and the Nexus 7 compared to it feels like a toy. I know they are not in the same price range, but the screen on the Xoom has the feel of hard tick glass that the Nexus lacks. I don't see how the back of the Nexus is supposed to feel like leather as mentioned by some reviewers either.
I already did the required steps to exange the device for a new one. I just hope that the replacement comes free of issues, even after reading from so many members over at XDA that it may not be the case.
----- update September 11 2012 ------
I want to give an update on my experience with this device. The RMA process was completed and the replacement tablet came without issues.
My Mom has been using it ever since receiving it and I check the device once in a while just to make sure the lift screen problem is not present.
I have to say that after using the replacement unit my opinion on this tablet has changed for good. You get great value for the price and ,being a Nexus device, the assurance to that it will receive updates on time.
My original opinion was based on a defective unit, so I felt the necessity to post this update for any person still reading this section of the forums prior to making their decision to purchase one.

Honestly, even with screen flicker, this is ten times better than my iPad 2. I'm putting my iPad up on eBay tomorrow night and I'm proud to do it. I'm using a ZAGGKeys Flex Keyboard to type this post, I LOVE my N7. If you want to check out my review it's over in the accessories section of the forum.
I really hope you give the N7 another chance. This tab kicks @$$, literally.

I totally love the device. the size makes more sense to me than my 10.1 inches Xoom. I just want an issue free device.
After reading so many posts about people receiving a flawless device makes me think the one I received was a lemon.

Sorry that happened to you but JOIN THE CLUB. Yes we all know Google and Asus screwed the pooch on the launch of the n7. No need to start a crying thread. And your complain about the quality? Dude its a 200 dollar device. Its quality for that price! So stop whining and bae will us ALL who had a detective device. This tablet blows your Xoom out the water.

Feel sorry for you
Hi mate, I feel sorry for you that your Nexus 7 had those problems. I received mine yesterday (16 GB version) and it is perfectly fine. Hope you'll get the replacement soon.
I'm happy with the device so far and my Transformer Prime will surely be jealous. Nexus 7 is small and light enough to carry around and to read in bed, what I can't do with the Prime because of its size and weight. 7" is my thing and definitely not the 10".
The GPS is very good. After a few seconds 11 satellites were found (note: clear sky today in London!). Overall the OS is more responsive than the Prime. So far there is for example no message "Web browser is not responding" that I sometimes get on Prime since the latest update.
The only annoying thing with Nexus 7 is that the home screen is only in portrait mode. But I'm going to root it and I can say goodbye to that annoyance.

I'll wait until the replacement comes to see. My Xoom has 64GB Total storage and 4G LTE connectivity, so for me, the N7 can't fulfill my tablet needs yet. But recognize that my mom seems to be the perfect candidate for it with its 8GB and size.
If my replacement comes without issues, I'll pull the trigger on a second one with 16GB cause my wife liked the form factor. I've been a Google supporter for a long time, heck I paid 800+ on day one for and unlocked Xoom to dive early on this android tablet adventure so I'm totally on their camp, but I expect at least a working device.

I think you should have gone with an iPad unless your Mom is one of the exceptions and real tech savvy and computer oriented. I hope this doesn't read as me being negative, I understand being upset and I'm not trying to come off as rude at all.
Don't get me wrong I love my nexus 7 and I love Android especially on a quad core tablet. I also have the Asus transformer prime and its one of my favorite devices ever. But when it comes to buying for parents, if looking for something amazing out of the box and simple and easy, I don't think the first batch of first gen nexus 7 tablets is the best choice in most cases.
I know you already bought yours and everything but since you wanted to inform others I just thought I would share my experiences that I've learned along the way.

She is pretty much OS agnostic, she can find its way around on the two computer they have at home, even though one is running Slitaz Linux, she understand the basic concepts to be able to figure it out where the browser, email and games are no matter the OS.
I took it to Best Buy to see the iPads and she played with it already, but she also played with two tablets 7 inches in size from Samsung and Acer, and decided that was a better form factor.
She basically wanted something to use out of the house for some games she plays and on the house while not on the PC. The problem here is with the device being defective rather than hard for her to use.

I feel you on the screen issues but you aren't giving the device a fair shake until you've actually gotten some seat time with it.
right now, it sounds like you're judging a defective device solely on some cosmetic issues that hopefully will get resolved with the replacement.
play with it some more until the replacement comes and evaluate it based on its size/weight, form factor, JB, speed/responsiveness, functionality, etc.

Are you still happy with your Nexus 7?

Hi everybody!
I'm about to get a tablet. Not sure yet which one, but the Nexus 7 is definitely one of my targets.
So I was wondering, if you, Nexus 7 owners, are still happy and would still recommend it.
If not, let me know why and what you'd recommend instead.
Looking forward to your answers.
Kind regards and greetings from Germany.
Yup still love it. My first tablet tho. I'm very on the go and 7" is perfection. Battery lasts me most of the day playing galaxy on fire 2 and streaming shows from xfinity. It runs super smooth and touch seems more sensitive than other devices. Sometimes I have an issue where the screen won't respond but turning the screen on and off seems to fix that.

I think what might help inform your decision is what you intend to use the tablet for.
The prime example being, if you need a lot of local storage, this might not be the device for you as it has no removable SD card slot. (although with rooting and USB OTG you can mount external flash devices)
If you're after a great overall tablet for consuming content, I can't think of a better option at this price. I'm virtually addicted to mine (much to my wife's chagrin).
Its the best. Get one ASAP! Device is works very well. Best bang for buck.
Love it. It's a fantastic device and the form factor rocks as far as i'm concerned.
still like it? its been less than a month lol
ive had 2 defective ones and a 3rd is being sent to me, and i still like it.
Absolutely no regrets, having the power of Tegra and a stock Android install really shows just how powerful the platform can be. And for the price it really is quality piece of kit, the only downsides to my mind are the lack of expandable storage and no HDMI out. But storage can be solved quickly and very cheaply with an USB OTG cable, the HDMI out will soon be solved through Miracast, and the nearest competitors with these features cost almost double the price.
If you're in the market for a tablet, there's really no competition for the Nexus 7 right now unless money is no object.

Soooo who gonna sell their Nexus 7 for a Ipad Mini?
Well come next Month we find out if Apple are gonna launch an Ipad mini, but the question is will you sell your Nexus 7 to buy one if the specs are decent & it has a Retina display plus if the price lands around what the Nexus 7 16GB is atm.
I have no doubt in my mind there will be plenty of Nexus 7's on Ebay if an Ipad Mini does come about next month.
I personally won't be selling mine as im not a fan of Apple never have been, but i reckon some on here will even if they don't admit to it right now.

There's no way Apple will sell an iPad mini at a loss. They have no qualms being the most expensive solution on the market, that's practically their business model. It will be nowhere close to $199. $349 is the lowest I see them pricing an 8GB model.
I love mine, and I don't think Apple is going to fight in the pricing weeds with N7. Lowest the iPAD mini will cost is $249 or maybe even $299
Love it. Perfect form factor for me too. Always felt the iPad was too big for my usage, felt awkward using it out and about. This thing bridged the gap nicely.

Then go for it. You won't regret it.
Yes, I get more happy the longer I have it. Now after saying that I have to say that screen size is a big factor in deciding what is best for you. I've gone through Acer Iconia A500 10.1 inch, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 inch (still have), iPad New (3) 9.7 inch and now the Nexus 7, 7 inch.
I definitely take the 7 out with me more often than I did the others.
I would visit a Best Buy or some other place that sells tablets that has them in different sized to get a feel for what is good for you and if you decide 7 is the best you should get the Nexus 7. I'm just saying that because I spent a lot of money trying to find my perfect size and should have visited a store in the first place to know my perfect size before going through all those other tablets.
I have the loose screen and it doesn't bother me one bit. It's a great companion for a daily commuter.
I can't put this thing down. It's the only tablet I use anymore.

I'm loving it. It's my most used tablet so far. It just feels very comfortable in the hand and works very fine. Great device.

Almost took the plunge tonight...

Was in my cart from play store. Complete impulse buy. I don't need it. I don't even know what I would use it for. I just rooted my touchpad, which will keep me happy for a few days. Have a galaxy s3, which I love. Does everything I need. I was wavering tonight between this, the g-note, and the Asus transformer i700. The last two get such mixed reviews...so I'm really leaning towards this. I think the smaller screen and cheaper price tag make it a much better choice. I just want a new toy. I'm hoping I can see one in person tomorrow.

I had an iPad 3 before getting my Nexus 7. Now my wife uses the iPad 3. I just can't stop using the Nexus 7! I find myself use my computer less and almost don't use my phone except for as a phone or when I'm out and I don't have my Nexus 7 with me.
If you don't have a family member who can take your old tablets off your hands, I'd recommend selling them or trading them in and get the Nexus 7. Assuming you get a flawless unit, you'll love the little guy.
I barely use my macbook pro anymore...even though I love it. I find the gs3 really satisfies everything I need. The bigger pads are just too big to be comfortable. If I were to get a bigger one it would probably be the iPad3, seems like the best overall package. Just hate that I can't customize it as much. I think the 7 will really be the perfect fit for me. WOW slim do not be such a dizzy..
As far as this Device I love the size . It seems to be the size vs the other bigger tablets . A phone or galaxy note is to small for a tablet. but to big for a phone.. I am the owner of a ACER A500 AND Love the Device. My spouse uses it on the couch now since i have my Nexus with me all the time. She is becoming and Android APP.CHIC.. I love that i can fit this in my smaller purse or a bigger clutch type bag and pack it anywhere and still look Good ..Not like im packing a Diaper bag to hold my tablet in...
I say its a personal thing rather this fits your needs or not.. If you have a bigger device you could very well think this is too small..
Look at the specs and what you want it for and make a Educated decision do NOT base buying anything on some one else saying they have and Love it.. GET WANTS Practical for you as long as there is NO APPLE ON IT.. APPLES ARE FOR WORMS ...

I own both an iPad 3 and a Nexus 7
I tend to find the Nexus is better for organisation, also for reading news. However the iPad is better for "Creating" content, or for doing actual work. Purely because it has more apps (and very good ones too)
Hopefully Android catches up and offers high quality content creation apps soon
I would recommend a Nexus tho

Nexus 7 32gb

I have the chance to buy for £130 new sealed, is it worth it overall.
Not sure if this was a good enough reason to open a new topic, especially here in the General section. Maybe in Q&A, but if you take some time to browse around here I am sure you will find the answer. Some say it's a brilliant tablet, some keep finding problems with it... Overall it depends on what do you want to do with it.
I opened a new thread as I want some opinions on it to help me decide.
It's hard to help you decide if you don't tell us what you think is important in a tablet. For what it's worth you'll be hard pressed to find a better 'bang-for-buck' tablet at that price you just list.

It's junk. Don't buy it. It will sense your fear of commitment and it will quickly become assertive and disrespectful to you thereby leaving you a quivering heap of indecision, like a spineless jellyfish that floats on a wave with no ability to steer itself and ends up crashed on the rocks until the sun dries out every last drop of moisture and a seagull plucks you away as a feeding for its seagull chicks who will eat and digest you ultimately pooping you out onto some rich guy's Mercedes who, after screaming several disparaging expletives at you, will take a hose and sponge to your final form until you are a diluted mess running down the edge of his manicured lawn and into a street grate never to be seen again. Save yourself the trouble.
Gone ahead and bought it and as of yet I do not regret it but only time will tell and I can resell for more anyway. Only drawback for me is no SD card slot.

i will sleep much better tonight now
I went from a transformer Prime to galaxy note 10.1 to a nexus 7 16gb then finally to a nexus 7 32gb.
By far its the best for me.
7 inch is easy to handle compared to the 10.1 for typing and carrying around. You will not miss having a back cam and here is something to be happy about, it gets the latest updates, great Devs and scores pretty high on the unreal 3 engine epic citidal!!

Toy vs. Tool?

I so did not "need" a $500 tablet. I have a desktop computer, an ultra book with pen capability and a Note 3. My access to all the Internet has to offer was not limited. And yet I walked into BestBuy of my own free will and handed them a pile of hard earned cash for this tablet. Why?
1) Tech lust. It was shiny and new and oh that screen. Face it, that screen isn't fighting fair.
2) I like viewing the Web in portrait. Why? I guess because I always had this fantasy of a future where I could sit and read an electronic newspaper. In portrait the Web feels like that. None of my other tech allowed me to do that like this 10.5 does.
3) Unboxing. Silly but I love the experience of Unboxing a new tech toy. I can see why people actually post videos of this on YouTube even though everyone knows how the story ends.
4) For me, this tablet is pure toy. I suppose I could do work on it but I doubt I will. I wanted a consumption device. I wanted eye candy. I wanted Netflix and YouTube in HD+.
5) I can sit back on my sofa with my cup of coffee and read on it like a book. Again the portrait thing.
6) I wanted clean clear deep black fonts with no fuzzies. I HATE fuzzy fonts. I guess because it blows my fantasies of the electronic newspaper.
5 years ago I almost died of cancer. As I lay in my hospital bed after hearing the bad news one of the things I thought of was how disappointed I was that I would not live to see the technology I had always imagined. Dumb right? Here I lay dying and I'm worried about never owning a Tab S. Lol, I'm ridiculous.
My next tech fantasy? Perfect robot girlfriend of course, but I think that one will take a while
So, is your new Tab S (boring name for the fulfillment of a long term dream) a toy or a tool or both?
I hear you, exactly same here. I just bought brand new 17" gaming laptop for over 2k, I have Note 3, I have iPad air, 2 weeks ago i bought Note Pro 12.2 just because it was on sale at Costco, but I had to have the new 8.4 S Watching ESPN games on this amoled screen is unbelievable... definitely a toy for me.

Wow - you guys definitely got it it bad...lol
I browse the web and read in portrait mode always, even the 8.4" suffices nicely. Videos always in landscape and I'm liking this tablet for that as well.
Unboxing doesn't do anything for me to tell the truth, but a nice new shiny device with these specs and performance does and with the BB discounted deal it was a no brainer for me personally.
A definite toy for me personally as well by the way.

Great question for a thread!
My answer: YES! (Because I'm THAT guy! )
I live out of a suitcase for days at a time, and having all my books and magazines, as well as a whole bunch of TV, movies and games all in one little slab really keeps me sane and grounded.
I carry a GS5, which is great for getting updates on things, but when I want to get serious about really enjoying what I'm reading or watching, there's no substitute for a nice tablet!
Oh, and I'm REALLY glad you beat the Big 'C'!!!
OP.. First of all glad to hear your alive and hopefully we'll after the scare 5 years ago. As I was reading your list before the cancer part I was going to say I wish I had the finances to buy this tablet as a toy. But reading that part I am glad you are enjoying this tablet on the couch with a cup of coffee.
I'm as tech crazy as you all. I am known at my local bestbuy as the rental guy. In the last 4 months I have 'rented' note 10.1 , tab pro 8.4, tab pro 10.1, note pro 12.2 iPad Air. I have not kept any of them. Have to love elite and their 45 day return policy.
I have not purchased the new tab s because I'm holding out for a new nexus refresh. The news today if the leaked 8.9 specs are epic while I think false considering the 5gb of ram. I'm typing on my iPad 3 which I still works and have a note 3.
I am now going to find a 2nd job to keep up with you all. .
Here's how bad it is. I actually find myself disappointed once I've caught up on all my emails, Web pages and blogs. I start looking for new apps to install or delete or maybe just start a silly thread like this one just to have SOMETHING to do on my shiny new toy.
Oh well, hey its fun. No more no less. I have to be responsible all day. I can fart around and waste a little time with my tablet if I want to.
I was just tired of carrying my heavy laptop to bed when I really wanted to relax and watch all my media content...with this thing its a no brainer and I do like that you can read in portrait mode. I'll be doing alot of that tonight
I'm sitting here with a dying RAZR M, dead GNex, old Nexus 7, and a Chromebook running elementary OS... I wish I could splurge!

to the op wishing you good health always.

I wish I had the balls to purchase, open, play, return. I would definitely get banned from Bestbuy.
I was curious on how many devices I have purchased so I made a list. It was actually shocking.
1) Kinpad - Chinese
2) Viewsonic
3) Wopad - Chinese
4) Asus TF100
5) Sansung 7Plus
6) Asus TF700
7) Nexus 7
8) Nexus 7 (2013)
9) HTC Sensation
10) HTC One X
11) Nexus 5
12) Samsung Note Pro 12.2
13) Samsung Tab S 8.4
14) Apple iPad 2
15) Minix x5
16) Minix x7
17) Generic TV stick 1
18) Generic TV stick 2
19) Generic TV stick 3
20) Roku
21) Asus TF200
Future
22) Samsung Note 4
23) RK3288 TV Box
24) Moto 360
All that over 3 years. But as my girlfriend says .... it keeps me out of the bars.......lol
But I think my last round of purchases (12.2 , Tab S and Note 4) should hold me for a while. I think the hardware and the OS has actually caught up with expectation. I can focus less on tweaking and just using the damn stuff.
D
Its not about the balls. I'm an elite member So that is $3500 per year. They can't say a thing to me. Lol

I'm an elite plus member at best buy as well and I've received those 90 return bans before simply because I returned so much stuff. Sadly most of it was because there was a defect in the product.

I didn't know such a thing existed. Good to know,
A toy that will get a lot of use. I travel every week, flying mostly. I will use this tab for watching movies, e-books, and web browsing via gogo in-flight internet (I will find out ne week when I try and log in, hopefully it will recognize my device and give me my 1 year free subscription!) when on the road. This is my first 10+" tab. I came from using my Nexus 7 (2013) when traveling, but when I saw the screen and specs of this thing, I felt I needed to treat myself!
I have an addiction. I have the Tablet S 10.5 and 8.4. I just gave my Tab Pro 8.4 to the wife, and I still have the Note 10.1 2014 and Note Pro 12.2. Probably going to be returning the two Notes.
I think I need an intervention.

I once dated a life coach. She would have told me that I sought out this new technology because I sensed inadequacy in other "real" parts of my life. I would have told her, "screw that, I just like it!". God she was annoying.
Haha. who doesn't love new gadgets?

They do not care what one spends and if they are an Elite member because there is a Fair Trade Act that Best Buy adheres to. One will get flagged sooner or later. Unfortunately defects in products nonwithstanding.
