I need some help. EFS empty folder and no backup - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, Im Penny and Im from venezuela.
I just got an Galaxy Note, a friend gave it to me, but the problem is it cant accept SIM card.
I have read a lots of guides and stuff, but neither my friend or I have any efs files backup.
In settings there is no Bandbase (unknow), Android version is 2.3.5 and kernel is 2.6.35.7-N7000XXKJ4-CL641703 [email protected] #2
So, i read something about rooting and stuff, I already did, but there IS NO FILES in efs folder. And there is no IMEI neither
when i do *#06#
I tried putting a stock rom, but there still the problem there. I read in a forum a guy that someone gave him some
Galaxy Note efs files, he restore them and it works. So i really dont know what to do.
Can some give me some help and give me efs files and see if I can repair this? I really need this because im planning to selling this (because i need the money).
Thank you and sorry for my pretty bad english.
** Edit: TO THE MODS:
Note: If this post breaches any rules, please remove (I'm learning bout this)

I am having the same problem. If anyone have the /efs files, please send to me as well.
** I am able to use the hex editor, only will change it back to my original IMEI, not going to use other people IMEI.
TO THE MODS:
Note: If this post breaches any rules, please remove my post as well. tq..

No one in the right mind is going to upload their efs folder containing their imei and serials and addresses
It is possible to change imei but I suggest you don't do it as it is highly illegal and carries a prison sentence, but if you try then start with a hex editor and look inside the nv_data.bin - if you can edit it only edit it to your original imei or that's where you run the risk of being bummed by some big steroid infested guy in the showers.
TO THE MODS:
If this post breaches any rules then please remove it asap

Exactly what azzledazzle said.. Read that post thoroughly, the one he linked and try if it works for you. The EFS folder contains highly sensitive data, the very reason I couldn't send you the file! Hope you get it..
Try if it works for you..

[Q] FIX Device ID: How?

Thanks to the good folks here i've just upgraded my Galaxy S to the leaked JPM firmware. So far so good - much faster than JPK I was on.
However - I'm having problems with the Appbrain Fast Web Installer and seem to have found out that it's due to the android device ID being the same because we're all using the same ROM (or something) (http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798644)
So.... How can I find out what my Device ID was/should be and how can I then change it to be "correct".
Any help much appreciated. Seems it might be a common issue....
Have you tried checking whether your IMEI changed after flashing? Type *#06# and if your IMEI starts with 0049... (I think...) then you need to do what almost everyone has been doing since JPC ... follow the instructions from here or some other threads from around here.
If your IMEI is fine, then I have no idea...

Thanks for info - checked my IMEI and it seems to be fine - i.e. the one i registered with my insurance with (starts 3547)
I've read the thread you linked to trying to figure out what's what but I can't see anywhere how to find out what my product code is/was/should be or how I can change it. I've seen stuff about backing stuff up (nv_data?) but I'm not aware of having changed these.
All I've done to my phone - flashed JMX and now JPM and applied SuperOneClickv1.4-ShortFuse root. Will that have changed my product code?
I'm a bit lost with this one.
Use sgs toolbox to see the crc code.
Sometimes you got the right code in the backup file.
Just do a backup of all file on a safe place. The remove the 2 original file. Restart.
You need to be rooted for this.

A bit of info that might help(?):
I loaded up SGS toolbox and pressed ""check product code" it says:
---------------------
Got root access
Copied nv_data files...
nv_data.bin could not be read!
No backup .nv_data.bak found!
-----------------------------------------
I'm guessing that's bad news?!
Under Firmware Info it says:
------------------------------
PDA: I9000XXJPM
PHONE: I9000XXJPM
CSC: I9000OXAJPM
Build Info: 2010. 10
--------------------------------------
When I tap CSC selection it says: "USSD code running" and then "UNKNOWN APPLICATION"
When you say to backup 2 original files - i'm guessing it looks like I don't have those. Is there another way I can check or is it definite from the above. If I don't have the original files am I stuck? Can I get them from anywhere else? Are they default to a phone by region or carrier (my phone is from O2 in the UK and is the 8gb version)
If you say delete the original files (which aren't there it seems) - am I right in thinking this will them make the phone auto-generate new ones? (I really have no idea what these files are for or what they do).
What's the next thing to try? Can I get hold of the missing files from somewhere? Do I even need them? And how do I restore the Product ID (if it's changed!)?
Thanks
Have you checked the path manually for them?
If they are not there you are in deep water.
Its you personal data for the phone and you can't use others file.
Search this forum for help about this.
I can only give you a advice what i would do if i had that problem.
I would flash a original firmware that is lower than its on kies.
Then i would upgrade thought kies.
Then i would check if the crc code is there and right.
If it still wrong then i guess i would make the phone look like it was out of the box and return it.
If the code is right i would make a backup(full) and on this files( to my external sdcard).
Then i would upgrade to jpm/jp6.

Hi - thanks for reply
I've checked the /efs folder with Root Explorer and it seems i've got:
.android - folder
.nv2.bak
.nv2.bak.md5
.nv_data.bak
.nv_data.bak.md5
.nv_state
/imei - folder
nv_data.bin
nv_data.bin.md5
Now i'm guessing this is good? is it all in the right folder?
Just to clarify - I've never messed with this folder - I've only ever flashed with Kies and cleared the cache and restored factory settings with recovery. I've also formatted internal and external memory card.
So are these files my original files? How can I tell? Are these included with the Rom's I've flashed? (JPK and now JPM)
I've copied the entire efs folder to a safe place - is there anything else I should backup also incase I can't restore it?
SGS toolbox still says:
---------------------
Got root access
Copied nv_data files...
nv_data.bin could not be read!
No backup .nv_data.bak found!
-----------------------------------------
Why can't SGS toolbox read the files?
Many Thanks
Maybe I am not following this thread correctly, but your last post deals with IMEI and unlock data. Your first post said you needed to change your deviceID. You even link to the Captivate thread that discusses the problem AND in that captivate thread is a link to change Device ID - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8604909&postcount=3550
review that post as it tells you where your device ID is located (it is not in the nv_data.bin file). Also, in the captivate thread, one person said he just made one up and that worked for him.
If you mess up with nv_data.bin you will mess up your IMEI and any unlock the phone has - so I caution you be careful.
I made a thread with the solution
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=815503
This should work.

[Q] Help!!!! bml3 & stl3

Dear all,
Firstly I would like to introduce myself because it is my first post here. I read a lot this wonderful forum and you all.
I am a spanish man who owns a Galaxy S i9000 and I am using GingeReal 3.2 room.
Last weekend, after restoring from an "on fligh" state , my phone freezed and I had to reboot it. After that, it has the:
a) /dev/block/stl3 and/or /dev/block/bml3 corrupted and I cannot mount it.
b) By this, the /efs folder is empty and it only works (modem) when I give r/w permissions to root "/" using root explorer.
c) phone: unknown
d) baseband version: unknown
As you can see, "everything is wrong" and I am using the standard IMEI (0049...). Also I have some errors in applications due this (whatsapp, jelly sms, etc.).
I have a nv_data.bin backup but if i write nv_data.bin or .nv_data.bak it's being deleted on every boot.
The only way to fix /efs problem is using "dd" to restore a partition "bml3" and "stl3" file backup but I do not have any friend who owns the same mobile phone.
I do not need any content into these partitions (I do not need the nv_data.bin which contains your own IMEI and MACs) but I would need anyone help me giving me that files (without contain).
It can be done by using "adb shell" or "terminal emulator" and writing:
su
dd if=/dev/bml3 of=/sdcard/bml3.bak
dd if=/dev/block/stl3 of=/sdcard/stl3.bak
Could anyone help me?????
I will than a lot.
Also, does anyone knows if with this I could solve "phone: unknown" and "baseband version: unknown" errors because with any Odin and any modem does not work and also I cannot find a baseband for i9000.
Thanks in advance (at least for reading this long and desperating post).
Also I know that it is not the right section but I am newbe and I do not have 10 posts written.
Thanks again.
Mario
Could anyone help me??
Finally I could solve it thanks to another thread in another forum.
Thanks anyway to everyone who read this post
Sorry I couldn't offer any help, but could you post a link to the thread that helped you for others who may come across your thread?

[ H E L P ] EFS folder and files needed!!! Phone bricked!!!

Hi! Anyone can upload EFS folder \efs) ? You can attach as zip file. Doesn't matter, it's important to be there all files.
I bricked my phone and I want to unbrick. Please, anyone who is experimented, please help me!
Best Regards,

efs folders are unique you have just removed your imei now if you don't have your own backup nothing can be done
now your mobile is a mp4 player if anyone uploads his efs file his mobile will also be a mp4player

Just because you're a Recognized Contributor, that doesn't mean you can bull****.
That is not true! Admit it, you don't know how pull the /efs ot from your phone
Like you said, /efs folder contains alot of things that are unique for each phone (WiFi MAC adress, IMEI, product code and what not), so we can't just give someone our /efs. Even if we could, the way of pulling those files from the phone are not known to me.
Wish we knew a way to backup it, when something like this happens - you just put the backup and away you go
just because am an rc that doesn't mean am bullying
nothing difficult in backing up efs file just go to /efs and copy those files to your sdcard and they will be backed up
but efs is visible only in operator specific models in normal phones imei is hardcodded in the mobile
mine galaxy s is of at&t and I can see the efs folder, prior of flashing roms on it I did a backup of that folder
and sometimes it got deleted then I just need to copy them back
can't see on original galaxy s of my friend
the thing is one imei cannot be used in two mobile there can be many conflicts and some also related to laws
only one sim can be used at a time on a single imei
that's why I said mp4player but you can still try to share your efs files if it works then just keep it else delete it
op if you have your operator specific firmware and it contains an efs.rfs file then you may have the possibility of getting back your imei
just try it, may work

Things on Galaxy S and on our mini are a little bit different for that /efs matter, because nvdata.bin is in devblock5 or something like that, an on Galaxy S it's in a different place. Strange, but it is that way, i tried all the Galaxy S tutorials to make a backup and none of them worked.
And yeah, you cant just copy the folder since that will **** up th permissions and then the files are almost useless.
Yeah, he has a great MP4 now, unfortunately :/
I know imei is unique, thats why i said ''if we could give our efs''
just copying the efs files works great for me
I never changed permission of efs files
and had done it three times by just copying
If you distroy your IMEI becouse of bml/efs you can repair it with JTAG. Write full dump then repair its IMEI (to be the one from you stiker). Generaly this is a Service job becouse you dont't have the necessary tools.
i don't have this /efs folder, but i still can browse internet, call my friends, do a SMS, play music. Just like a normal phone do.

if you cant see that doesn't mean you don't have efs
it is just that you cannot see it like you cannot see bootloader, kernel etc.

Changing the IMEI number

Hello
I own a Galaxy S I9000 with Slimbean 4.2.2 for a few years already.
I am in another country now for a few days and I received a message saying that my phone's IMEI is not registered and will ban me from using their service unless I pay a tax.
If I were going to stay for a Little longer I wouldn't really mind to pay for it, but since I am leaving in one week it seems to be quite stupid.
However, I tried to slve it the legal way by going into the office, but I won't be able to do so until Monday because it's closed
I have a backup of my efs folder for a few years and a new one I did today. i also checked the permissions and the groups it belongs to so I quite know what I am doing. I tried renaming the nv_data.bin and bak files so the phone wouldn't find them and restarted just to get a generic IMEI number but the phone didn't register on the network. I know that depending on the operator the phone might register or not, so in this case it's not doing it.
My question is how could I change the IMEI number. I tried my own methods but don't seem to be working ok. I am not sure if the phone won't just work if the IMEI number in the file and the motherboard itself don't match.
I know changing an IMEI is an ilegal process and I am unsure if this is against the rules so feel free to close the thread in case it is. I have no plans on doing ilegal stuff with it, mainly because it's my own phone
Any ideas?
Thank you.

This sound me like a scam.... : (
Since you pay to use the SIM card from that carrier, doesn't matter what phone IMEI you are using as long as that phone is unlocked for that carrier...
A scam can be possible. Altho it depends on the country you're in.. Also i woudnt reccommend it if you're there on a holiday of some sort.
Hi
Thank you.
No, it's not a scam. I confirmed it. And my phone has already been blocked.
The reason this is done, as far as I know it's because they want to prevent phones from other countries being sold here
Can I do what I proposed some how?
Thanks!

Hi
Thanks xsenman I am a bit affraid to do a full EFS restore since my pone is working properly, there's nothing wrong with it, just that it's IMEI has been blacklisted.
I tried to use now my existing EFS folder and using a nv_data.bin file from a friend so the IMEI would change. I tried setting right permissions and the right group, but the pone seems to always change those on next restart and sets only rwx for owner. I also tried to make a copy of the nv_data.bin of my friend to .nv_data.bak too
Any other idea

Hi
actually I did follow that but not all of it since it asks you to restore a efs you can get in the thread
However I didn't want to risk too much since my EFS is fine. And when I get back to my country everything will work fine because I can use my own IMEI. But since I am now in a country that has blocked my IMEI I am trying to use just a friend's nv_data.bin file in my phone.
However even if I set the same permissions and the group that you talk about in the thread it won't work for this file. This is what I tried already, sorry if I didn't mention it before
If I set 777 and root group to on my friend's file (as my original nv_data.bin has by default for some reason, since I think the right ones are 644 radio:radio) then the file permissions won't change in next reboot but still it will give me a generic IMEI number
If I set 644 root:root as indicated on your post on my friend's file it will change permissions on next reboot as commented in the earlier post
If I set 644 radio:radio to my own nv_data.bin file or 777 root:root as it's by default for some reason, it works., but again, it's my own file
So could it be that the phone knows that my friend's nv_data.bin file is from another phone? The same settings don't seem to work for a file that is not mine
Also, to let you know I am using Slimbean 4.2.2, I can't flash my phone to GB at the moment.
Thank you!

First and foremost, the moment you want to Flash, the rule of the thump is you should have a EFS folder backed-up somewhere else ( external SD card or PC or cloud)
so IF you do have a backup, than overwriting it would not be a problem as you can easily restore it with your backup ( this applies to any an all files and folders in the Internal phone memory)
if you are swapping IMEI the files inside the efs folder, nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 has to be overwritten. swap may not last as the moment you flash again, they will be conflict between IMEI in the Nand memory and IMEI in your folder when booting the new ROM also note networks will reject two phones with same IMEI trying to connect to their network
the normal steps should be overwrite, (not replace) than save, than quit all using the editing app than reboot
if it fails to stick, one way is
Copy Paste EFS folder with root explorer (meaning overwrite it) , after paste , save and quit using menu, power down phone and reboot into recovery and wipe cache before rebooting....this worked for some
you can always fix permissions in CWM too and read this for better understanding.
Take Note, Altering IMEI is illegal in most countries

Hi xsenman
Thanks for your replies. Sorry if I couldn't reply earlier.
I actually renamed my original nv_data.bin to nv_data.bina and nv_data.bin.md5 to nv_data.bin.md5a so I could put my friend's nv_data.bin and then set the right permissions and group. I thought this would have been enough but it didn't work.
Replacing the complete EFS folder "scares" me a bit just in case I get to mess something important. I guess this is because I really know that the efs folder is neccesary for the pone to work fine and I am affraid to mess something up. Even if I got a backup (Actually I got more tan one, since I did my first backup last year, and a newer one 4 days ago)
I asked my friend to give me a copy of his complete EFS folder but apparently he doesn't know to.
Thanks for your help.

Hi
Yes. I forgot about that one but I looked at it before. I wanted to ask you why do I need it and why can't I use my own since the important files are nv_data.bin only?
Sorry if I am making a mess with this explanation. I forgot to tell you that when I renamed my original nv_data.bin, nv_data.bin.md5, nv_data.bak and nv_data.bak.md5, I pasted my friend's nv_data.bin file but I didn't paste his .md5 file since I don't have it. When I restarted the pone the MD5 file got generated.
Shouldn't the dummy EFS folder only be used when somebody knows that it's EFS is corrupted but the nv_data.bin is fine?

that's what I noted from your first post as such I emphasized it, you only used one file, it should be two, that uploaded folder contain files from a broken i9000, so its more or less original , you can use only the two files in it. as i understand, you only want to use for a few days.

Hello
Oki, so since I don't want to mess up much with the EFS partition on my pone. Can I just overwrite nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 with the ones from my friend and then set the permissions and group?
I will ask him to send me the .md5 since he only sent me nv_data.bin
Would this work?
Thank you.

It should work, just overwrite files, and reboot after save and exit in menu, but if both of you are in the same network, both can be banned, if network decides to do so.

Thanks.
My friend will send me the file in a few hours. Once I try I will let you know.
I know about being banned but he's in my country and I am in another one at the momento. So nothing should happen.
His IMEI number will get banned in this country too after a few days. They are about to ban cheap Nokia pone I have too.
They just ban any phone that hasn't been bought in this country unless you pay that tax
Thanks!
Hello
I tried to add the nv_data.bin.md5 file from my friend. After restartng the pone I had my original IMEI instead of the original one or the generic one. So I think it's because it tried to restore the backup from nv_data.bak and nv_data.bak.md5
So, besides pasting my friend's nv_data.bin and nv:data.bin.md5 I tried to copy these files as nv_data.bak and nv_data.bak.md5 but after restarting I got a generic IMEi
I will try to ask my friend to send me nv_data.bak and nv_data.bak.md5 so I will replace:
nv_data.bin
nv_data.bin.md5
nv_data.bak
nv_data.bak.md5
with the ones from my friend and see what happens.
Thank you.!!
