OTG & Sandisk 64 GB microSDXC - anyone tried yet? - Nexus 7 Accessories

Just checking to see if anyone has tried the OTG with the sandisk SDXC 64GB card yet.

Where are my pants?!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using my mind.

Yeah, unfortunately the MicroSD card won't fit in the MicroUSB or headphone ports. Such BS!

Works great!

NEXUS7 does not support exFAT (standard formating on SDXC). If you format the card in FAT32 and use a reader after installing the utility for mounting mass storage probably will work.

Thanks for the reply. I am currently running it in a note formatted fat32.
My question is has anyone tried it in the nexus 7 yet.
And to the other replies: To be perfectly clear. Utilizing a microUSB to USB OTG adaptor, and a USB microSD card reader, has anyone verified the 64 GB microSDXC Sandisk card as working?

I doubt you'll get 64gb since there's no exfat support. 32gb would probably work though.

That stands for "On the Go [microUSB]". It refers to using an adapter cable between microUSB and standard USB, into which a common USB/SD card reader can be plugged.

If usb to go (or whatever it's called) works, then I have no doubt that the 64gb card will work. I have one in my gs3 with fat32 and it works like a charm.

The N7 doesn't auto mount USB mass storage when acting as host. If you have rooted and are using something like stick mount then you can mount USB mass storage. The type of SD card is irrelevant the only question would be if the SD card reader you're using can read the card, doesn't draw too much current and android supports the FS.

Mine works fine in the note as well.
But I have seen issues posted in Asus transformer forums and wondered if anyone tested with the nexus 7.
I will test when I get mine.

My order finally shows "shipped" with tracking.. I'll test it once I get it. OTG and 16gb worked great with stickmount app.

There is always a workaround... Format the sd card to fat32 by then it will work...

What are you guys talking about, I hookup my OTG adapter with a USB mouse or keyboard and the Nexus INSTANTLY recognizes it. Very sweet.

Try a official Sandisk card reader. I have a 128GB SXSD (full size SD not Micro) that's fat32 formatted, that I use with a Canon camera. Works with official Sandisk card reader but had results like yours when I used generic card reader. I have read and write capability with that card. 128GB external storage on a 16GB Nexus 7, wooohoooo!!!!!!!

if the Nexus 7 is rooted and you install stickmount from the play store, then you can use pretty much any flash drive/hdd/card reader under the sun, I've mounted a 2tb wall powered HDD, and a 500gb usb powered hdd, and a 32GB SDHC card in a USB card reader, so I doubt the 64gb SDXC in a proper card reader will cause any issues.
As above, fat32 would help, but nexus7 can use NTFS as well in my experience, though you may have to update the kernel.

Additionally, I haven't tested this yet with my N7, but I know this worked for me on the KF.
If you format to FAT32, you'll still get access to the full 64GB. The downside is that your transfer speed will not be the full 30MB/s that the card advertises. You'll probably get more around 10-12MB/s for Reads, and 6-8MB/s for Writes.
I plan to try to use NTFS format on my 64gb card and NTFS Mount from the Play Store. I'll report back after I've tried it.

I think they would, given how small this is. I don't imagine it would cost a lot to ship. Mine was send from Hong Kong in a normal envelop. So, worthwhile checking this out, especially the second one which is only around 35 Pounds?

yes it is. Tempted to get one for my Nokia, but it's handy to swap between devices. Play.com deliver free here so the price you see is the price you pay.

micro to mini converters are easy to get hold of - you can buy them off ebay for very little. Doesn't have to be a sandisk one, kingston make micro sd memory cards with sd and mini sd adaptors in one box. If you want you could just buy a 1gb microsd off them and use the adaptor with your 8gb, providing you have some other use for the 1gb card! Alternatively, like I said, check ebay.

I've tried this and it won't work unless you get the sdhc mini adapter from Kingston. This is the only one I could find that supports micro sdhc cards. The adapter comes with a 4 gig micro sdhc card. I have a 6 gig sandisk and this works in the Kingston mini adapter just fine. I also have a regular mini sd adapter and neither of my sdhc cards will work in it. I got my Kingston 4 gig and adapter from Amazon.
Good Luck!

There's no difference between adaptors given with sdhc and sd, it's literally just a pin adaptor with no 'technology' as such. it's strange that you have issues!

I would agree but this micro sdhc card does not work when inserted in this mini adapter
and placed in my Advantage.
I use the same Sandisk card in this Kingston mini adapter and it works perfectly. If I use the regular PNY micro sd card inserted in the mini adapter it comes with, then it works just fine.
Look at the Features/Benefits of the Kingston card w/adapter:
* Compliant — with the SD Specification Version 2.00
* Versatile — when combined with the adapter, can be used as a full-size SDHC card
* Compatible — with microSDHC, miniSDHC, and SDHC host devices; not compatible with standard microSD/miniSD/SD - enabled device/readers
* File Format — FAT 32
* Reliable — lifetime warranty*
Specifications:
* Capacity** — 4GB
* Dimensions — 0.43” x 0.59” x 0.039” ( 11mm x 15mm x 1mm)
* High-Speed Class Rating — Class 4: 4MB/sec. minimum data transfer rate
* Operating temperatures — -13°F to 185°F (-25°C to 85°C)
* Storage temperatures — -40°F to 185°F (-40°C to 85°C)
* Weight — .1 oz (2.7g)

If the new micro sdhc card are not backwards compatible with old devices that use standard sd cards then why would you think that a standard mini sd adapter would support the new sdhc. It's obvious that the adapters are not just some passive shells that just convert the pin outs.

They are in fact passive shells. There is a difference between a card 'reader' and a card 'adaptor. A card reader uses hardware to recognise the card and send its information through a USB port. A card adaptor simply alligns the digital and electrical pins so that there is physical contact.
SDHC cards differ to SD cards in terms of their memory addressing protocol but are identical with regard to their physical interface. This accounts for the universal backwards compatibility of SDHC card 'readers' with older SD cards, and why many devices can be made compatible with SDHC cards by means of a firmware update

the microsd you're looking at buying is vastly overpriced. You can get them here for a lot less through most suppliers. Maybe we're just lucky here in the uk to be able to get them for 29gbp! With regard to the adaptor, you can't really quarantee anything with windows mobile devices, but they should work provided it's capable of reading up to 8gb sdhcs.
Please be informed that 12 GB microSDHC is already out. See this thread.

dying to have the 32Gb micro sd card
I don't think we'll see a 32GB MicroSDHC card any time soon. It looks like the major manufacturers are going to concentrate on the new format SDXC (which can support up for 2TB) .
SDXC is the same design and shape as SD/SDHC but it needs specific support from devices, the Leo/HD2 doesn't, at least officially, support SDXC
However I have been looking and there is a way to convert a larger SD card into a MicroSD card ...yes you read that correctly. You can get a 32GB SD card now (and cheaper than a 32GB microSD if it shows up), then can get a converter from a few places such as APTOlink . I'm not sure this will fit under the Leo's battery cover, but if it will it's the best solution.

Thanks jagnet. I'm currently using a class 6 16GB Micro SD but I just ordered that DX adapter you linked to because I'm curious to see whether it has a low enough profile to fit into the HD2. It's very annoying waiting for 32GB MicroSD and it would be cool if we could get 32GB capacity now, but cheaper because its on the SD format, and still fit in the phone.

Anything may happen of course, but there's no reason why 32GB SDHC cards shouldn't work. 32GB is the maximum capacity for the SDHC format, and it doesn't require any new drivers, readers or whatever.

64 SDXC card compatible?

I think i've seen a few people with a 64GB SDXC microSD card. Does this work or not? I haven't seen any place that confirms what type of microSD cards work (normal, HC, XC) yet.
i don't want to waste the money on it if it doesn't actually work.

I was told by AT&T that i could use a 32gb microSD, as the max. Maybe a store like BestBuy would let you try it out first. Good luck.
I work at AT&T and everything says 32GB max and that's what I relay to my customers. I've used a 32GB HC card, I've thought of trying a 64GB card, but didn't want to waste the money on it if it ended up not working. I have to go to Best Buy tomorrow, so I'll ask if I can test one out.
Dont think it will work well for devices using the FAT32 format for their media. There are ways to read and possibly write to 64GB sd cards, but mostly involve formatting the card using you PC.
Havent held a 64GB sd card in my hands, but if it can work it would probably be the last sd card I ever own
No luck with Best Buy. They didn't let me try it out. But if what Omnimax is saying is true, there's no use buying one.
Yes it will work. When you first pop it in it will say that is corrupt, but after reformatting it within Android Storage settings you will have 64 GB's. I had one for my Inspire but I thought it wasn't worth it so I sold it on eBay and got a 32 GB microSD, a case, an extended battery, and a screen protector instead.

I looked at numerous online stores including Amazon and eBay, and the average price is about $92..the price will obviously come down but it may be a mute point for people like me who want the HTC One X..that's the only bad thing about the One...no removable storage or battery..that's one of the reasons I trashed my iPhone and went with Android...much better!!

If HTC goes on that direction, then the Vivid might be my last device from them. No removable battery? If they get it right like Motorola did with the Razr maxx, I can live with that, but no sd support, bye bye.

Yeah, I feel the same way...I would love a new HTC phone but the 16 gb and battery are deal breakers for me...especially the memory...I download a lot of music through Rhapsody and the 16 is simply not enough...hopefully, the One X won't do so well and we shall see the return of removable battery and sd card...I've seen 64gb sd card at best buy...even though they won't work with current phones, they should on next generation phones this year which would make the One X less desirable..

64MB micro SD
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/13284_SanDisk_64GB_microSD_for_sale-.php
I just read through the above link and through the coments of it, I'm going to buy one and try it, I'll post back here once I've confirmed it works apparently it just needs to be reformatted to fat32, and even if it doesn't work I'll find a use for it in the future
Alright!!! I now have a 64 GB sdxc card, and it works for my HTC Velocity 4g!!! Android formatted it, and it works like normal, writes at 10MB/s and reads at 33MB/s. So, it's not faster than my 16GB sdhc card (must be the specs of the phone, not the sd card restricting speed). Hope that helped anyone thinking of buying a sdxc card

I wonder..............
How much this card is??
Micro SDXC flash memory cards are eXtended Capacity micro SD cards same features as SDXC cards - that is capacity up to 2TB (Terra Bytes) and data access speeds up to 300MB/s, but in the shape of the TransFlash / micro SD card that are usually used in mobile phones and other small electronic devices where even the small size of a regular SD card is to big. With an adapter microSDXC card can be used where miniSDXC or full sized SDXC cards are required as well as connected to PC via USB interface or for even faster read / write speeds connected to eSATA via eSATA SDXC connector that transforms any micro SD card into a low cost high performance thumb drive / flash drive.

Does the usb dongle support 64GB USB Drives, and other questions?

1.) I only hear people talking about 32gb flash drive versions, is there a reason for this?
2.) I also see that a USB sd card reader is an option. Should I get a USB flash drive or a SD card reader? Is price the only consideration there?
3.) One more question, with these cases like the rooCASE Multi-Angle and similar, do you think there will be room in the back of the case to stick the USB drive into the case so it doesn't hang out? Is this what people are doing?
Thanks!

32GB is the max for FAT32. 64 GB sticks are usually formatted exFAT. My Acer A200 cannot use exFAT with its full sized usb host port, to my dismay.

TY very much sir, that clears that up, does anyone have any answers/suggestions to the other two questions?

2. up to you depending on which one is more portable.
3. if there isnt, you can always buy velcro strips and just stick your usb stick to the case via velcro.
I'm using a 64 GB one now, no issues with stickmount at all

Sorry but that is incorrect. FAT32 can support much larger than 32GB. Many external HDD's that are sold and pre-formatted are done with FAT32. The limitation you are thinking of goes back to Windows 2000 FAT32 driver which couldn't create a partition larger than 32GB but could access a partition larger than 32GB.

64GB SD for Razr i

Hi I know that officially the phone supports up to 32GB SDs but I was wondering if anyone has bought a 64SD to test in the phone? Many phones that don't officially support 64GB SDs still use them just fine...
I was just reading this review and they seemed pretty against 64GB in the phone: http://www.t3.com/reviews/motorola-razr-i-review
64GB SD cards
I ve been using a 64GB SD card in my RAZRi since ive got it......and it works fine. It will only show part of your storage (upto 32GB im guessing)
when you hook it up to the computer....however, everything can be accessed if you use something like Astro File browser or EStrong (both free on the Google Market) on your phone. I just use a micro SD adapter when i want to access the whole card on my pc...job done!!!
AW: 64GB SD for Razr i
I use a SanDisk 64GB card with no issues whatsoever. Both my computer and the phone show me the correct storage space.

Cheers, thanks guys. I don't really want to spend 50 Euro if doesn't work! I need to upgrade very soon, I put my music on the SD and sync from my laptop. I'll get it then :victory:
I have a Sandisk uhs1 64gb which also works fine!
It didn't work in a normal razr (xt910) that kept corrupting the files.
The razr I however is fine.
You may find if you plug it into windows that it wants to format it to exfat. Don't do this as the phone won't read it.
You need to format it to fat32 BUT windows by default won't let you make a 64gb fat32 partition, it keeps wanting to do exfat.
I used a separate free partitioning app to correctly make the 64gb fat32 partition and its fine!
Format it in the phone...
