ODIN flash mistake... - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so I was flashing through ODIN, and I flashed through the PHONE section instead of PDA because for some reason I turn into Dolan Duck at 11 PM. Now ODIN won't get past "Setup connection..." and Heimdall gets an error when it attempts to "handshake with Loke". Switched to three different computers and it always acts the same, so I'm thinking I might have really jacked the ability to write directly onto the phone through the computer. Phone still powers on, but just boots to the AT&T world phone screen and stays there. No recovery mode so if I can have a way to fix this and get a kernel written onto my phone that'd be really great.

Hey hi,
1. By far the best way to go back to Stock ROM's :good:
2. I'm not sure if this is exactly the solution to your problem but hope it works.
- I've had problems with heimdall and odin, drivers not being compatible, the driver that is installed for heimdall doesn't seem to work with odin and if you try installing the driver to get the odin to work, heimdall stops working. So your best option would be to try this:
a. Go to the forum link above, download all the required files.
b. switch off your phone, wait for 3s, then hold the volume buttons "+" and "-" at the same time, you can just use your thumb, but those two buttons must be pressed at the same time, now hold it! Insert the usb connector from the laptop/pc to your phone via the micro usb slot. Wait for it.. and voila you are in download mode.
c. Now, if you are running Odin and if you HAVE the correct drivers, you will have the correct green/yellow indication when you use the software, which basically tells you that there is a "handshake" between the Odin and cappy.
d. Once this is done, you can follow the steps that you were planning to do, otherwise follow the steps from the thread posted above. one by one.
If you already have ROM's on the SD card, and you've already got CWM on the phone, you just need to go into recovery mode(hold the volume buttons and then hold onto the power button, it should work, otherwise give it another shot ), once in recovery you can install the new ROM using the normal method.
(a suggestion) Most people face problems coz the driver installed isn't the right one, so if you are using windows OS, and the drivers aren't detected, download the drivers again, go into device manager, completely uninstall the driver for samsung captivate, and install the one that is working.
Watch how it is done using one touch Odin3 --> here
If you are upgrading your ROM to ICS, after you flash the ROM, flash the Devil kernel for cappy, --> is a good one :good:
**Always remember to back up data**A clean install is always preferable**

Yeah the little box turns yellow in ODIN but it just hangs there at setup connection. I also, sadly, don't have recovery mode because my kernel flash is when it all went terribly wrong. I can connect to ODIN and Heimdall with no problem because I have the respective drivers, the problem just seems to lie in the fact that neither program can write to the device so it continually hangs.

quick question for clarification, the phone is in download mode and then u connect it to ODIN and when u hit start(to flash) nothing happens?
You could try this.
1. Install another version of Odin, or even the Odin one click with gb
2. Remove battery and cable connecting phone and PC.
3. connect USB to PC and then go into download mode and try flashing the new package.
Let me know if its still not working, i kinda had this problem, but i tried with different Odin packages, try to flash the one with the gb bootloader.

Yeah that's what happens. Its recognized and everything then just hangs at setup connection part really don't know what's up but it's kind of weird.
I really like have tried to change it like odin packages and everything but it just won't be read past set up connection. I just wonder if I messed up my partitions to the point of no return.

Stuck after bad rom flash, odin wont recognize

So heres the synopsis on what my issue is:
first of all-
phone: Samsung Captivate build 1010
current OS: (botched install of Darky 8)
problem: no recovery menu capability, stuck in reboot loop (will not go past ATT Logo), can go into download mode but odin does not see the phone
I botched a Darky 8 install. I attempted to install the rom to my captivate via rom manager but to no avail. I then decided to give the install a try via clockwork and had luck. the rom was not to my liking so I went to mount the internal sd and proceeded to delete all files internally to make a fresh odin install possible (as I always do). It was at the time of restarting my phone that I realized the rom I install was accidently the I9000 rom on my captivate, thus forth being a possible source of my issue. Currently I have a phone that is stuck in a reboot loop any time I plug it into a power source, or attempt to power it on. While in said loop the phone will not go past the ATT logo, and as it cycles, at the I9000 screen a robot voice pops up saying restore system. Ive attempted to reflash back to stock with the stock captivate odin3 OCD, but I am having no luck with the phone being recognized by odin (run as admin). I am currently running Mac OSX 10.6 with windows vista on Virtual Box 4.0, and have had luck previously with flashing the phone back to stock after I decided to try new versions of cognition. Currently my phone can only go into download mode and not recovery due to the boot loop. please help asap, this my only means of communication with my family on the other side of the states
Try multiple USB ports/different computers if possible. I had a similar issue after flashing an i9000 rom. I could get into recovery but the power button wouldn't work for selections and in download mode my computer wouldn't recognize it. I just kept at it and eventually it worked.

going to try, redoing my virtual box in hopes that it was something stupid, and also trying the other usb port on my macbook.
Have you tried using a different cable? I had the same issue with a bad flash and Odin would not pick up my phone. If it did, it would nit complete the flash back to stock. I switched cables and it worked fine.

sadly I wished that work, I tried using adb reboot recovery, and in the attempt, the phone was not able to be detected. Should this be done in hopes to catch it at the right time in the boot loop or in download mode. Ive tried both.
So can you still get into Download mode? If so I would suggest finding another computer to use. For some reason, last week, my PC that I have been using to flash for months decided not to recognize my phone in download mode.
So I switched to my laptop, loaded the ROM. I tried reinstalling drivers and all kinds of stuff but nothing worked. I backed up my PC and re-imaged it and it's working again.
Another person on here had to go and manually remove all references to the USB Driver and re-install it.
I would say just try re-installing (with the phone in DL Mode) the USB drivers with the phone plugged in and see what happens then. Hopefully the OS will detect the phone and you should be golden.
And that mechanical voice is voodoo... need to be careful what folders your deleting even if you are going to flash ODIN.

Odd I was told your perfectly fine to do so, and then from there do an odin flash. Ive done it before, but oddly enough I think what screwed me was because I did it during while in the rom, vs while in 2.1. I just wanted to try to get a clean slate. doing the master clear code from samsung never really deletes the left overs from say clockwork and such on my internal sd.
problem was the virtual machine, plugged it into a friends computer and all was done within a couple of mins. leave it to emulation falling short :/

[Guide]How to flash a ROM on a 2.2 Captivate

Introduction
I've put together a video on how to flash a rom. It includes Rooting, Backing up data, Flashing a kernel, Flashing a rom, and troublehooting bad flashes.
Warning
Before you go and flash a ROM for the ultra-fast speeds, kick-butt graphics and awesome sound upgrades... Realize that the risks are real, it is possible for you to black-screen-brick (hard brick) your phone. Here is a real-world example:phone won't turn on. At this point, only JTAG recovery will be effective. I will be posting a video on JTAG soon enough.
You may feel more comfortable stopping after rooting and titanium backup, and not installing a ROM at all, that's OK.
How-To
If you are installing a ROM, then select the ClockWork Mod flashable zip you want and copy it to your phone's internal memory before you watch the video. I did not cover this in the video as there are many options. Team Komin recommends Andromeda3, but you may select any Captivate ROM.
Here is the video which I have prepared on flashing a custom ROM.

Tips, Tricks, Good to know
If you have a standard computer setup and you see your phone connected to a port higher then COM6, reboot your phone and your computer before flashing anything.
Phone--!--PC is just a download mode. If the computer does not recognize the phone, reinstall drivers, reboot and pull the battery out, then try again.
Odin is only used for initial and/or recovery modification. After using odin to flash a new kernel sucessfully, you will only need ClockWorkMod (CWM) to flash most kernels and ROMs. CWM is accessed by pressing and holding the 3 button combo.
If your phone displays Phone--!--PC and does not register a COM port on your computer follow the directions below
1. remove the usb cable, battery, sdcard, SIM.
2. wait 10 seconds, then insert the USB cable.
3. press and hold the 3 button combo while you insert the battery
4. continue to hold until phone's screen goes black twice and release power button.
5. timing is critical, it may not work the first time. Keep going until you see the COM port is connected properly.

In a boot loop - Moved from Andromeda thread
Hi Adam, Just to get up everyone where we are. I had a flashing issue with Andromeda which resulted in the phone continuously rebooting; i.e. white screen Ursa Minor screen disembodied voice which I now think says missing operation, it definitely doesn't say backup operation, I've listened to it soooooooo many times. . .anyway I put the phone in download mode as you said - BTW this phone with phone off vol+vol then plug in USB and download appears. Holding the power button takes you -when the phone isn't loopiing of course- into recovery mode. I had already restarted the computer, - not a VM - restarted Odin 3 and tried to reflash. Pass! Reset and unfortunately I'm still in that loop can't get to recovery mode.
I removed the battery and USB. Held down all three buttons and with the USB cable connected put the battery back. I held through 2 screen goes black circuits. Second time up the screen shows a gray battery then goes black then I get the ATT screen followed by Ursa Minor and my now less than favorite voice. Doing the same without the USB cable I don;t get the battery but I do get the ATT splash screen between the two black screen and then that darling voice again. So that's where I am. Ideas please
Personally I would One-Click back to Stock. ROOT. Install CWM using Rom Manager. And then install Andromeda via CWM. (I usually skip re-rooting and just install from CWM via the update.zip from ROM Manager) See if that doesn't work... If it does, finish up by installing Ursa Minor #2 (or is it just Ursa Minor now?)
Great Work Adam! This is surely gonna help alot of new users!
On a other note, I'm concidaring to try A3 and was wondering if it's not exactly what I'm looking, can I flash over it (as it is really stock based) or am I better using Odin 1.7 again and flash another ROM?
Thanks!
Okay so I was writing this reply saying "I tried that first thing and have tried it several times in various ways since. It hangs, never got a progress bar" I had just tried it again (20 minutes of nothing) and was going to post the log out of Odin but I had closed it out so I thought what the heck I'll run it again. Danged if it didn't work this time.
I know this sounds odd but I think the difference was that I had Odin One Click running when I put the device into download mode instead of starting it after. As I said the only way into download mode I've found with this phone is powered off hold vol+vol then plug in USB. This time Odin was waiting, found the port and when I clicked start it worked. Heaven only knows if that is a quirk or coincidence.
Now off to see if I can flash this rom.
Thanks
^^ It can be tricky to get it into download mode, but there are several ways to do it on all phone. The important thing is that you get a sane COM port like COM8 or less on Odin3 1.7, and that you have download mode activated on the phone. Good to see that everything is working properly.

Get ursa minor on there and you can do anything!
The ursa minor kernel with ClockWork Mod flashed through Odin3 1.7 will support all ROMs designed for our phone. Some ROMs are not designed for our phone (Cyanogen Mod, MIUI) and have work-arounds supported by the developers. I skipped the portion of downloading a ROM because you can pick a ROM yourself, this video just gives you the tools to do so. You are more then welcome to use the "UrsaMinor.tar" file as a ClockWork Mod springboard to other ROMs or kernels, I just picked my own team's ROM for the video.

OK well I've confirmed that Odin One Click won't restore on this phone unless it is open on the Windows machine when I connect the USB port tot throw the phone into download.
I restored then went through the flashing process again. This time when when it rebooted it didn't loop but it wouldn't go into recovery. I used droid explorer to flip it to recovery mode. Inoted then that there was no adndromeda.zip package on the sd card. I assumed Ursa was supposed to pull that over because in the video it says to find it and install. In any case I drug it from the computer to Droid Explorer and then was able to find it and install the Rom. The unpack looked normal enough the system rebooted. I unplugged USB,gave it the three button fix roputine, and was back in the loop. No matter what I did it looped. The loop was slower this time and the voice clearly said Restore Operation. Not knowing enough to wander farther and unable to get into recovery now because Droid Explorer couldn't see the phone anymore I let Odin restore it. That's where I am now.
Suggestions?

EDIT: This should be Stickied!
fireboss: redownload all links above, it is possible that something went wrong with the download process and a bit is missing somewhere.
-copy the rom of your choice to your SDCard (Team Komin recommends Andromeda3, but any will work)
-put the phone into download mode and flash ursa minor tar file using Odin3 1.7
-let it run though it's operation until it boots normally.
-remove the usb cord, press and hold 3 buttons to reboot into recovery
-select zip from SDCard- Andromeda3.zip

You should always start odin BEFORE plugging the USB cable into your phone. I have never had an issue with odin on any of the phones I've flashed if I had it running before going into download mode. I also always restart odin between the initial flash and master clear if I'm going that far.

No need to mess with 3e recovery. UrsaMinor.tar overwrites 3e recovery and gives you CWM so you can begin flashing immediately.

That works. The biggest thing is that you are in download mode and you have a sane COM port like COM5 or 6, not COM14. As shown in the video, COM14 lead to Phone--!--PC..
I may do this video again with heimdall. it worked well.
mxracer101, any chance you can generate a pit file? I'd like to make Andromeda3 into a full heimdall flash where you simply put the phone into download mode, select the files, hit start, and let the stock phone boot into Andromeda3.

[Q] Captivate Soft Brick - Need a rooted Odin solution.

Hi
My brother (a no-geek) has a captivate, and lives in a different city (I donot have physical access to the phone). He visited me few weeks ago and I installed CM-7 on his phone, i know my bad. Some of his videos were not working, so i asked him to update to the latest CM-7 build. He download the build, saved it on int sd_card and used ClockWork Recovery to install the selected ROM. Upon reboot it entered in never-ending splash screen. I found couple of odin ROMs, and posted him link, we tried to flash them, but no good.
Status --
The COM ports are detected, but the process at times halts at <SET PARTITION> at times at <SET UP>... at times all thread completed successful would show up as soon as hitting START.
I dont have a captivate, can someone please suggest a sure shot solution and post me a link for ODIN, with a root rom. I am using Team Whiskey on my Vibrant, and I prefer stable modified ROM because of its features and power.
I can explain him the process on skype using desktop sharing, but the ROM should be good. Thankyou very much in advance.
if he can access recovery, try wiping everything thru recovery then start again
Phone is in Soft Brick state.
Phone is in Soft Brick state. So i cannot boot into the phone and go to CW recovery.
What he needs is just a stable usb connection that's how he got to this point, bad communication between the phone and computer. On cm7 I beleive you need the nexus s drivers installed. Also make sure it's plugged into a usb port that's attached directly to the motherboard (back of pc, port 1 on laptop)
@studacris
I think the drivers are already installed good. The connection is also good, as i can the COM port detection in the ODIN, with one of the boxes changing its colour from NO-COLOUR to YELLOW-COLOUR.
I think the ROM builds are not good. They go action-less during flashing, actually nothing (progress bar) comes on phone, it keeps showing the Downloading screen, endlessly. Odin usually is stuck at at <SET PARTITION> at times at <SET UP>...
Can someone post a link for a test one click odin. Well i would prefer one click.
You did try DG's JF6 one click, thats the only one I use, how are you establishing dowload mode on the phone or are you even doing this.

+1 If you read the OP the problem is he can't flash back to stock he is having problems flashing anything period, @ the OP correct me if I'm wrong but I have a strong hunch that you are leaving out some pretty crucial steps, I have a feeling that you are not putting the phone into download mode, I also believe that you are gonna need to make a jig and pay a visit to your brother to help him out especially if its bricked the same way mine just was flashing with cm7 roms. But if you are getting a com port to show without having to put in download mode then you are farther along in the boot process. If this is the case you may be able to adb into recovery do a full wipe excluding /boot and reflash. Will the PC recognize the phone with it in its current boot locked state? If so then recovering should be somewhat of a breeze.

--- then removing the cable, after the phone enters the download mode. Then, start the odin and connect the phone through usb cable again. The odin detects the phone on one of the COM port.
- I havent tired wiping the phone through recovery. But i need to get to recovery first. I dont know in a soft brick state if i can get into recovery.
- regarding getting back to 2.1... i would like to flash to the latest version. Kies update is not an option for me, as i not in US.
This phone was purchased from craiglist, i used one click root method to root it and the same script an option to get the unlock codes. After that i experimented a lot on the phone with various scripts. Last i was using congnition on it. Then saw CM7, i liked it on my vibrant, so i flashed it on my captivate (which i got for my brother). Now i have to get back to some stable modified ROM... I am thinking about trying Srendipity or cog ROM... but before than i have to install a rooted stock ROM.
That is the story and issue... but thanks a lot for help. Any more suggestions.

Try putting the phone into download mode after you open Odin. Which version of Odin is this? Also, installing the nightly build of CM7 again often fixes the boot loop on the newer builds. I would try that if you can get to recovery.

if your phone turns on it IS NOT a paperweight. something wasnt done, or you didnt read enough of something somewhere.
1. Do your homework and read through forums. This Q&A itself has many threads from people which had experience similar to yours.
2. Don't Panic. Also, please don't right in bold and caps. It seems like that you are shouting. People here have patience and they are here to help.
3. Follow the instructions below step by step -
As you mentioned that you are able to enter in DL and recovery mode, your phone is not yet dead. I also assume that you tried to use ROM Manager from market (my guess from what you have written), if so, please know what you are doing before attempting. Anyways -
- Make sure you have proper drivers installed on your computer. If you are not sure, grab them here - Windows 32 Bit OR Windows 64 Bit. Reboot your computer if required.
- Download Odin One Click Stock JF6 from here.
- Open Odin (right click on it and run as administrator). Plug the USB cable to PC, other end is not connected yet.
- Turn off your phone. (Pull out the battery and put it back). Press and hold down both Volume low and up buttons and while holding them, insert USB cable into phone. You should enter into Download mode, Also Odin running on your computer should recognize it. Flash it.
If your phone is completely dead, you can't find out what is going on, follow the instruction on this post.

I haven't been on froyo in a while but I think you need to take out Sim card as well?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
Hey guys,
I'm having a similar problem with the same phone. I was trying to flash to a custom OS from eclair using the heimdall 1.1.1 suite. The problem is that what I used is supposed to be used to flash from froyo. So now a samsung galaxy s welcome page comes up in the new font, but it will never load anything else. I can also get into recovery and download mode, but when I run the Odin One Click JF6 it doesn't do anything. It says something along the lines of finished, 0 success, 0 fails.
Could I just flash the original kernel back onto the phone? I have been reading the forums and haven't found many people that can get into download mode and are still having problems. Thanks you guys for your help in advance
EDIT: Just figured it out. Used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266172. VERY happy my phone is unbricked!

You saved me, I've been looking over the whole forum trying to find some way to get this resolved. There are just so many posts on here it's hard to find specific information. (especially for the new people). This helped me so much, I hit the thanks button, but felt I should say more.

[Q] I Killed my Captivate

So lately i have been having a ridiculous amount of issues on my phone. RAM was constantly used up it kicked me out of programs all the time, battery sucked, itd be laggy and jumpy power button stopped working etc. so last night i decided screw it i was sick of it and i was just going to start fresh so first i just did the system reset or whatever on the phone.
Now heres the problem, after the reset i turn the phone on it boots up and goes to the tutorial, when i either skip the tutorial or finish it i get an error message saying the tutorial isnt working properly and asking to force close. so i close it and then all i get is a black screen with the clock on the top. Not of the buttons on it work and it wont do anything but pull down the menu.
ive tried the odin 1 click master clear but it and my computer wont recognize the phone along with me putting it into download mode and trying to flash to stock. Odin doesnt see it and my computer says the drivers are broken and it wont recognize the device.
I re-installed all the drivers but the same results occur. I did however manage to have my computer see it when i put it in samsung keis mode (can still choose that from the drop down menu when i plug it in) however i dont know if that will help anything.
So any and all help will be greatly welcomed as i now am without a phone and need it very soon. Thanks

If Odin isn't being friendly to your phone, try using Heimdall. You can get all the same things you need from Odin, but it's a different set of drivers and a different program, which might solve your issues.
If you need one, here's a Heimdall One-click to stock Froyo that AdamOutler made. It's really easy to use - just download it, let it install, and click flash.
alright ill try it and see how it goes thanks a lot
no luck. Heimdall doesnt recognize it connected and my computer still says it wont recognize it so im guessing thats the main issue first...

If you haven't already, try turning your phone and computer off. Then reboot the computer and let it settle. Once it's all set up, move your USB cable to a port at the back of the computer (or somewhere else on the computer if it's a laptop).
Once you've done that, start up Heimdall. Once it's up and settled, start up your phone in download mode, then hook up the phone.
both have been restarted a couple times but ill try that again. i grabbed a different usb cable as well. this time it allowed heimdall to recognize the device at first but when i started it said no drivers and it i followed the instructions it said after however the options heimdall said werent available. im confused why it would so no drivers as i just reinstalled them and when i plugged the phone in for heimdall it said drivers installed.
but no at the end of trying a couple times the device is back to unrecognized and heimdall cant see it

Heimdall uses a different set of drivers (libusb) instead of the ones that samsung provides. I would suggest that you go ahead and uninstall the Heimdall drivers as well as the samsung drivers, reboot the computer, and run Heimdall again. Let it finish installing the drivers and be ready, then reboot one more time and try again.
eventually got it working and got it back to stock 2.2 however my 3g isnt working and when i try to run the update on the phone to gingerbread it wont connect to att. i thought maybe i could just flash up to gingerbread but when i put it in download mode and connect it odin still doesnt recognize it and this was after rebooting both

If you were able to get it to work with Heimdall, and you're wanting to go to stock GB, I would suggest using Adam's UCKH3 Heimdall One-click. This will flash stock AT&T Gingerbread (well.. technically that doesn't exist yet, but..) and the i897 Gingerbread bootloaders at the same time.
Just make sure you have all your important stuff backed up to something that isn't your phone before you do it, and that you have a good connection between your computer and phone.
well that one worked so thanks but still no 3g or any data connection

Just to check, make sure your IMEI matches the one on your phone.
To do this (assuming you're on AT&T), go to the dialer and type *#06#.
Write down that number, then open your battery case.
Take out the battery, and look on the sticker with the barcode. Above the first barcode should be your phone's IMEI. Double check to make sure those match.
If not, you may have some issues with the contents of your /efs folder.
nvm i figured it out. had to reset the access points or whatever to default. now onto to re rooting. thanks for all the help. know anything about the power button not working? i thought it mighta just been the software before but its still not working. do fixes exist? because i really hate using AnyLock to use my phone.

It's possible it's dirty and needs cleaning - canned air might be a good solution.

If you're wanting one that's rooted and has CWM, check out the one in my signature. It's stock KH3 gingerbread, with CWM, rooted, but no bootloaders.
