wi-fi tether issues - Nexus 7 General

Anyone having issues using any wi-fi tether apps from your phone with this tablet? I get "connecting" and "obtaining ip address" when trying to tether with my nexus s 4g (rooted) but i can't get them to work. The same tether apps from my phone work for my laptop but not this tablet? I can use the bluetooth tether with these same apps but the wi-fi tether doesnt' connect. I guess my questions are:
1. anyone else having this issue
2. if so, is connecting bluetooth from the tether app slower than connecting using the 'wi-fi' option
THanks in advance for this!

Go check your nexus s 4g's tethering mode. Some phones only work in the ad-hoc mode instead of the infrastructure mode, and most of the tablets don't support ad-hoc mode. PC normally supports both modes.

I am having issues. I create a hotspot using my s3 but my nex7 can't connect with a password or not. I got the Bluetooth tether to work instead. Using the FoxFi app and I'm not rooted for either devices.

Works fine with my I9000

Try changing the wifi hotspot name in Foxfi. I could never get Foxfi to work with my S3 and Windows 7 laptop using a password. Without a password it worked fine.
I ended up getting SVTP Wifi Hotspot and USB Tether for my S3 and now I can connect with a password to my laptop.
Will be getting the Nexus 7 tomorrow so I'll check out how the SVTP works with that.

Nexus 7 doesnt see my phone's wifi broadcast
Using a rooted HTC Rezound to offer up the 4G...my iPads find the broadcast in seconds, laptops as well. Nexus 7 has yet to find it. Tried different channels, different settings, different wifi tether pgms, still nothing. My phone apparently cant seem to connect via bluetooth properly either, tried foxfi/pdanet. I dont care about the iPad having network access, its a paperweight after my nexus arrived, but I would like to be able to use my nexus on the road/at work/etc. Any help would by spectacular...

I had absolutely no issue using FoxFi off of my droid bionic to my nexus 7. It initiated and connected within seconds.

This happened on prime for a few firmware versions where ad hoc tethering connections wouldn't work. The solution is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438297. It should work for nexus 7 also. Make sure to follow instructions and set permissions correctly. It should work instantly. No reboot required.
Edit: might need some adjusting. Since i just looked and saw nexus 7 only has one wpa supplicant file in /system/bin , a complete swap might do the job. Of course rename and backup the original wpa supplicant file. Set permissions correctly on new file according to op of that thread. Post back of it works or not.

The iPad can connect to an ad hoc network, the Nexus 7 can't. Most wifi tether apps are ad hoc so that's why it won't see the network. You need to be able to tether with infrastructure mode to get the N7 to see the wifi network. If there is a hack to make your Rezound's stock hotspot app work, that would be the best way to tether to your N7, because it would be infrastructure.

using Foxfix here from galaxy s3 to nexus7 without issue, blazing faster than my WiFi connection at home..4g LTE rocks, hope the next nexus smartphone will support LTE speed

have you consider tethering throught Bluetooth? I used that with no issue with my rooted Nexus Galaxy to my Nexus 7.
Just so you know, my wifi tethering work too.

My phone doesnt support the bluetooth PAN...I think I need to follow the other instructions. Im really new to this, so hopefully someone can hold my hand.

I'd be surprised if the N7 didn't recognize adhoc networks. When Asus put out the TF101 it initially didn't recognize adhoc, but the first software upgrade fixed that. As far as I know all of the Asus tablets now support adhoc. Doesn't make sense that the N7 would not have that capability. - sheureka

Just got my N7 today at work and luckily I can tether with the stock WiFi hotspot app on my HTC wildfire s. For some reason no one can connect to the WiFi at work so tethering is all I have at lunchtime.

I'm able to connect to my rooted e4gt using wireless tehter with no problems. N7 is 100% stock.

Your issue is trying to tether with a Verizon phone u have to get sqlite editor and modify a value.. if u search you'll find it easy I had to do it for my RAZR today.. now foxfi is working normally

Had no issues with my gnex, I however just use the built in android way

Then or also paying $20 to use the internet u already pay for? Not knocking u just asking because if your on Verizon no WiFi or Bluetooth tethering will work without paying the fee

My GNex tethers just fine with the N7. Bluetooth tether sucks however. Connects and stays connected but does not work with anything except the browser.

I managed to tether through wi-fi and bluetooth. Try using a CM7 RCA rom, or something off of here if you like. The built in features for 2.3 and up are great for tethering over wi-fi. Just make sure the rom supports it now since Im using CM10 and for right now wi-fi tethering does not work. Best of luck to you.

[Q] Wifi Tether not working???

Just rooted my Revolution today and installed wifi tether....the main reason I upgraded from my Dinc for 4G!!! Surprise!!! Doesn't work. Does anyone know if there is a reason I cannot tether my revolution with this app?
haven't gotten it to work for me either.
I'm assuming the dev hasn't updated it for LTE. Have you tried turning off 4g and trying it w/ 3g only?
You don't need to root. The free 4g hotspot will spit out 3g also if your not in a 4g area. So until July 6 i think, just use the Verizon provided app. I use it all the time and it works perfect.
Little Buddy Sr.
I haven't gotten mine to work either. It rather frustrating. I didn't realize there was free hotspot until july 6th? That's news to me.
actually, the stock app does seem to work for me. damn fast, too.
wifi Tether works too, i have it using wpa_supplicant with ASCII WEP, for some reason.
after connecting my cr-48 to it i got about 5mbps down, which is better than nothing.
random issue: bluetooth kept cutting out when using the tether.
Ok, several things.
I tried changing the access to ASCII WAP. Great. That got me to be able to enter a code. Its the validation that is still the problem. The status bar on my computer just sits there and says connecting to connection.
When the connection shows up in my wireless connection list, it has the 3 computer icons connected with arrows, instead of a signal reading. Could that be a problem? I guess its an ad-hoc network? I'm using WIFI Tether version 2.0.7 on a ASUS Windows 7 64 bit machine with an intel Centrino Core 2 processor
I know we have the 4g hotspot until july 6th, but I'm really hoping to find a solution or steps to a solution on this soon. I had Zero problems with 2 Incredibles.
As an aside, it also doesn't pair with my IPAD Wifi (I know, I know, its an apple product, but it was cheap).
Thanks everyone for you help!! I appreciate it.
wifi tether for root users (restored from backup) worked today
FYI-> I went to tether today and the 4G built-in app expired so i tried my restored wifi tether from my dInc.
it worked.
4g and 3g tested, both working.
not sure why this app didnt work before...

I cant explain why, but download Open Garden Wifi Tether from android market. Basically same app as wifi tether but it works on Revolution.
Actually I take that back.. I havent been able to connect at all.. I was confusing the 4 days I spent with my thunderbolt before trading for the revo. Sorry..

mixed results with the open garden wi-fi. It connects to my laptop, which is better than before. But speeds are so gosh dern slow. I know some tweaking is needed on my end. Does anyone know the difference between this and the wi-fi tether app? on the surface they look the same.
update your laptops wifi driver and enable adhoc.n mode. That solved all issues on both of my laptops.

I've updated the drivers, trying to figure out how to enable adhoc.n mode. not finding that easily. Running Intel WiFi
under device manager and right click on your wifi card and click properties. There should be a bunch of tabs and under one of them there should be a option for adhoc

Could this be an possible explaination?? Could Vzw block all tethering all together? Says a recent update could affect all phones..

I was able to install and try barnacle but didn't work, also downloaded via Windows7 and installed Wifi Tether 3.1 beta-1 which also did not work. http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com if anybody wants to try it out.
With barnacle I was able to connect to my phone using another android device by checking "skip wpa_supplicant" but there was no connectivity but said "Connected".
Does anybody have a successful tether to Windows7 or another Android device?
Just saw on another forum, wifi tether will only work if the kernel has netfilter enabled. Anyone know how to check?
Fixed android-wifi-tether app will be released in the next week or so, just hold on tight!
If you're still having problems, you might want to check your video card: I have an Intel 6200, and after some exhaustive Google-ing, I found that if you revert your driver to 13.1.1.1 it works fine.
If you're considering PDANet as an alternative, I'd advise against it; it's not a bad option per se, but the free version bars you from https sites after a while (a month I think), and it's slow... really, really slow in my experience (I was getting about 10KBps with PDANet, and now I pull around 60KBps... yeah, I'm way out in the boonies and can only get 3G for the time being).
Wifi Tether WORKS!!!
I just downloaded Wifi Tether 3.1 beta 3 and I have a successful tether to my Windows 7 desktop. In Wifi tether settings and under LAN make sure MSS clamping is checked. I don't know what it is but it works.. download here.

Tethering

I just got a Streak 7, and new to this whole tethering stuff. I was wondering if someone can help me with something. Can anyone guide me on how to use the streak 7 with my Tmobile Samsung Galaxy Smart phone to tether my connection on my smart phone to use on my Streak 7. Please help. Thanks
You would have to have tethering on your smart phone. Don't need it on the s7. Your s7 will pick it up via wifi. So just have wifi enabled on your s7 and wifi hotspot turned on on your phone. Assuming you have this feature, just tap menu>settings>wireless&networks>tethering&portablehotspot and then check wifi hotpot.

So, ad hoc does't work? I was reading through wpa_supplicant on the Streak7 system dump, and it looked like they tried to get it to work (could be wrong; I'm about as n008 as you can get with Linux).

Just tested it out and it worked great. No 4G in my area until October so I was running You Tube, which blocked here at work, over the tether and it it was really smooth. The app was painless to use, no configuration at all just started it and gave it SU access and off I went. My laptop connected right up.

I believe the reason most phones can't see it is because it creates a Wifi hotspot in Ad-hoc mode and not Infrastructure mode like most Wifi routers do. Android phones cannot connect to an Ad-hoc network, at least I haven't found one that does.
If you connect to this network from a computer you'll usually also see it listed with Ad-hoc mentioned or a different icon of some sort.
I have noticed that Apple's products can connect to an Ad-hoc network. I'm not sure why this limitation exists on Android handsets, it's quite annoying.
Most of the "official" carrier Wifi hotspot's do support Infrastructure mode, so that's why you can connect when using one of those hotspot app's.

It is because in Ad-Hoc mode there is no server assigning it an IP Address like you get with the infrastructure mode found in routers and other devices. You have to make sure that all the devices are configure with matching IP addresses (addresses in the same subnet and class), gateways, and subnets. Ad-hoc is generally a manually configured network where you configure each device. It is what we used to call peer to peer in the old days.
The app listed in this thread works great. Just to check ppl are turning on the wireless radio first? I know its a simple thing but you would be surprised how many times ppl forget that step.
I've been fighting with this app since I got it. I know the problem is with my laptop, but when I had the Inc. i could connect with no problems at all. I see the signal from the phone in my wireless list, just as an adhoc connection. I just can't get my computer to ever connect to it.
I know the error lies somewhere between the keyboard and chair, but if anyone has any ideas on what I should try, plz let me know.
Running. Win7 Ultimate 64bit
Thanks all!
it works!
The first WiFi device I tried to connect was my wife's phone (Samsung Captivate) but her phone would not find WiFi Tether signal.
But my rooted Nook Color did and it works fine.

Interestingly enough, I was able to use this quite well on my Nook Color running CM7 when they had 4g turned on in my area (for one day). After they switched it back off, I have been able to connect, but the data doesn't seem to go.
I don't get the correlation, because I was even able to tether it at work where I only had 3g, but the second they turned 4g off, it wouldn't tether from 3g. Frustrating.
I just want to note I am using it on a 3G connection. They have not activated 4G in my area.
I figured out what was wrong. The problem was that I was authorizing my nook exclusively, and while this works, it doesn't appear to be a permanent solution. You have to redo it occasionally when you reconnect.

having issues with this app, laptop connects and some sites work, speak easy speed test reports very nice speeds, but for whatever reason several sites will only partial load and then timeout. Forum based websites work fine and it seems youtube works also. Not sure why others won't.
I am trying to connect my laptop running Windows Vista Home to my LG revo. I can see the AndroidTether ssid and it is ad hoc. But when trying to connect it just sits there trying then has a message that "connection is taking longer than usual" then it gives a timeout. I can get a connection with my desktop running Vista Ultimate. Anybody know what setting in my Windows laptop that may have to be changed? I setup my wireless adhoc device props to match the LG revo settings. I found a new driver for the wireless network card and it connected just fine...DOH!

[Q] Streak 7 wifi + iPhone Tethering

Has anybody been able to connect their Streak 7 wifi to an iPhone hotspot using native tethering?
I have tried multiple Streak 7s running stock 2.2.2 and HD7, multiple iPhones running 4.3.4 and iOS5 Beta. I have tried both bluetooth and wifi. So far I have had no luck. Bluetooth connects and even says that the iPhone is being used for data, yet apps can not access the internet. It sees the wifi infrastructure hotspot but fails to authenticate.
Basically the device has been useless for me when I am not at home.
So, am I missing something, or do the Streak and iPhone just not get along?
Do GSM iphone 4's have wifi tethering? I thought that was only in iOS 4.2.x that the CDMA iphone uses. I dont believe it was in 4.3 and i havnt been following the 5.0 betas very closely
The normal tethering available is bluetooth and USB, neither of which android support (as the iphone requires a custom driver for usb tethering)
Yes, the iPhone 4 GSM does provide wifi infrastructure tethering. It was added earlier this year in 4.3.
Also Honeycomb 3.2 appears to support the Bluetooth profile for Internet Access provided by the iPhone. It even explicitly states "Connected to device for Internet access". Everything connects fine, however data is not actually working.
I've done it with my LG Optimus V and it works perfectly.
It works with nearly every rom released thus far. Iphone must have TetherMe installed. Then mobile hotspot will be enabled by default. It does not matter whether its gsm nor wifi. Firmware for hotspot 4.3.x and better. Via blutooth anything under that.w
Thanks ariveraiv. The iPhones (3GS and 4) that I have tried are not JB but have tethering plans. IIRC Tether Me just bypasses the carrier checks and enables native tethering.
The Streak 7s see the iPhones in both wifi and Bluetooth. Wifi attempts to connect but is never successful. Bluetooth appears to be successful on HD7, but data does not work.
If I had to guess: wifi is failing to authenticate the WPA password and Bluetooth may just be having an issue with the profile from the hacked xoom ROM (the stock Froyo ROM does not appear to have an Internet Data BT profile).
BTW ariveraiv - Which ROM are you using on your Streak7?

No, it's infrastructure.
I am familiar with the wpa_supplicant fix, but that isn't the issue. ad-hocs wouldn't even show up in a wifi scan. I can see the hotspot and the iPhone shows the Streak connecting, but the connection fails after a few seconds.
What's the key to getting a Droid to broadcast a hot spot that the Streak will connect to?
so if i buy a wifi only streak 7 i wont be able to use my iphone to connect to the internet and such? i went into a t-mob store to look at the streak 7 and just buying it outright, the sales guy said it would connect fine? was his answer incorrect? or is it that it has the 4g from t-mob?

I use my pdanet all day on my iphone4 to tether my tablet. In order for this to work, YOU MUST fix your wpa supplicant on your streak. Use the supplicant from the xoom. It works.

The OG Droid only broadcasts in ad hoc mode. You need the updated WPA_Supplicant for the Streak in order for it to connect (Android issue; they purposely made it so you can't connect to ad hoc out of the box). You need to be rooted to do this. Go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970219&highlight=ad+hoc+wifi
If you have WiFi Tether for your Droid (also has to be rooted), you'll be good to go after using the above tweak.

Droid 4 tethering question

On T-Mobile, their phones' built in tethering switches you to a different APN to inform the carrier that you're tethering.
I've heard rumors that Verizon uses deep packet inspection to guess whether you're tethering or not. A Verizon salesperson told me that they can guess only based on the amount of data you use.
Which brings me to my question:
Does the Droid 4 switch you to a different APN when you tether? Does Verizon use DPI? Or do they make a scientific wild-ass guess based on the amount of data you use?
Thanks, guys.

While I have no idea, I have done light tethering on my D4 and haven't had an issue. I've also used my OG Droid as my main source of internet for a week while my cable was down.
At the moment, tethering w/out a tether plan is a bit of a risk, although I've never heard of anyone on VZW getting in trouble for it. Anyone heard anything different?

When you tether does the Verizon screen pop up? On my D2G stock tethering was impossible without Verizon knowing. I'm looking at a D4 and no tethering is a dealbreaker. It's for occasional data (light usage) while on long trips.

USB tethering works without any hassle. Wifi tethering does an entitlement check, but if you're rooted you can disable the check.
If you use the wifi tethering app, there's no check either.

I got it working on Rogers, on the leak. Had to add my tethering APN though SQLite, please read more details here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27099169&postcount=2
I had to change my MTU to get USB tethering to work reliably. After that, I had no issues.
I haven't changed the MTU, and USB tethering seems to work fine. Verizon didn't even try to upsell me when I launched my laptop's web browser.

How do you actually do USB tethering? Do you select PC mode?
I rooted my D4 and installed the 'Wifi Tether" app and it works great. Used it to connect an iPad2 and a win7 laptop. Using this lets you have more than one device connect through it. Using USB would only have that one computer connected.

To use USB Tethering you obviously need a USB cable connected to your computer, then go to Tethering & Mobile Hotspot, and click on USB tethering.
Also note you also need to have WiFi disabled to use USB tethering. If WiFi is on the USB Tethering option will be disabled.
well not with a Droid 4 but with my Samsung stratosphere which is a 4G phone for verizon, i would use PDAnet and connect it by USB. i use about 15-25gigs a month and i have never had any problems. i don't torrent with my phone but i use it to download my PSN games that i buy from the store and also use it for online games like Swtor and WoW as my home internet is very very slow compared to my 4G speeds i get.
but also i do all my heavy tether use during late night (12AM-6AM) i never got throttled or anything before.
i used Fox Fi for my wireless tether app but lately i been having problems with it and it kicks me off 4G and i have to restart my phone but that is only for wireless tether
