Rooting, CWM recovery and upgrading i897 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, one year ago I bought a SGS i897 from swappa for my girlfriend, the phone stopped working 1 month ago, so I searched for a logic board which is now installed in the phone, and its like this:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
My question is, seeing that information in the picture above, which is the EASIEST way to root and install CWM recovery in the device?
Im planning to root it using Superoneclick and then I want to upgrade it to ICS using Euroskank rom.
My questions are:
1) Is superoneclick the most reliable and easiest way for rooting this device?
2) Which is the easiest way for flashing a custom recovery?
3) When I have completed this two steps, do I need to do anything before flashing?
I know this are stupid questions, and I excuse myself because of it, but I havent modded an android for a long time.
Thank you very much!

To flash a Dev/custom Rom you don't even need to Root. See this... Guide by TRusselo...

Thanks ffor your answer, but I do want to root my device, which is the EASIEST way to instal CWM recovery?

Superoneclick for Root since u r on KB1.
For cwm recovery, find a Dev KB1 Kernel (.tar) in the Dev forum and flash through regular Odin.

Can I flash cwm recovery using this guide? I think it is the easiest way.

Im sorry but, there are no KB1 kernels on the development forum, is there any other permanent and easier way to flash cwm recovery?
Im sorry for being such a newbie about this!

After I rooted through Odin i flashed the speed mod kernel to get cwm. Here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880

Nope...that CWM is packaged in an update.zip that was for use on Stock 2e Recovery, that was on Stock Eclair.

Let me know! Is there a guide for rooting and flashing with odin? thank you so much!

Just a quick question as I'm not at home ATM but am dying to install this. Has anyone had any success by downloading the update.zip straight to the phone and putting it in the root of SD with a file manager? I just worry that something like this would best be suited for a PC, but like I said I'm dying to try it NOW! :-D

[ROM][GT-P3100][4.0.4] -Stock - Base: IMM76D.P3100DDBLF3

For those of you having problems updating your P3100 via Samsung Kies, here is the .tar.md5 file which can be flashed via Odin.
*Tested on my P3100*:

3. Connect your phone in download mode (Volume Down + Power Button).
4. Run Odin and find the .tar.md5 file and mount it as PDA and the .pit file as PIT. You should see your phone in yellow labelled as COM:*something*. Tick the Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time options.
5. Lastly, Flash! (Don't forget to end Samsung Kies or any other process from the task manager that might interfere in the process.).
That's it, you now have the latest official firmware.

I think Kidney Poker is making one so there would be no point in making another.
Besides, I am using CyanogenMod 9, so I'll have to flash back to the stock ROM to dump the system and data files and I do not like it one bit because my SD card does not have much space so I can make a nandroid backup of only one ROM at a time, either the stock one or CM9.
So maybe you should wait a bit for Kidney Poker to release it.
regards
I'll post a cwm flash able first thing in the morning. Getting a real file host setup first. As for a pre rooted Odin flash ill try to post one later in the day.

Yes, you can flash Notecore on rooted stock 4.0.3 using mobile odin and it will also flash cwm recovery on your phone.
Steps-
Download the kernel in odin format (.tar or just zimage).
Open mobile odin app and select the downloaded kernel in "kernel field" in mobile odin app. Once selected scroll down and click "flash firmware" and it will be done.
Please do not use that touch recovery to flash anything, it is not safe.

So silly,
DON'T TRY ODIN
try android download tool (ADT)
Hope u will get it flashed
Or just flash it using recovery manager.
Please do the "google" many devices get bricked this way by using ADT and RomManager. I just want a safe way. Flashed many roms and recoverys in odin in my Galaxy Mini never saw sonething like this where all the Boxes turn yellow.. This creeped me up..

Nothing really. Only the phone with USB cable.. Kies ajd drivers all are installed

Have you tried to flash? I would. It'll either work or it won't, but it won't brick your tab.

OK, you're in a bad spot, lol. I'd get odin version 1.85, never had luck with 3. And then see if you still get all the yellow boxes. Then make sure cwm is for your specific device, double check that. Then flash, I'm sure that will work.

Check the stickies in the development section for your device on xda for cwm or twrp. Google for odin.
God promised men that he'd put beautiful women in all corners of the world. Then he laughed and laughed and made the world round
DDJPA is an indian Stock rom ...read somewhere the bootloaders are locked..i have NO plans of unlocking them cuz there is a high chance of scrwwing things up..read Chainfires thread he had no CF-root kernel for DDJPa..need help guys

Just use overcome method. The gb stock safe v5 packaged by them is stock jq1 with bootloader.
It will replace your locked bootloader.
Then overcome kernel will provide you a cwm.
