Help! Trying to Root and stuck - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay. I am stuck and frustrated like crazy. I have a touchpad that i am trying to root. I have tried the universal novacom installer and it fails. I have tried web os doctor but that fails as well. I put the tablet in editing mode, then hold the volume up button while pluggin in the tablet to my computer and that puts it into usb update mode or something like that. I start the webos doctor and it gets to 4% and the tablet shows the HP loga and all of a sudden the computer looses connection with the tablet so it stops. What do i do? I really want to get this going but am hitting walls left and right. I have ene tried it on my old laptop that is running Windows XP. I can either use my XP laptop or my Windows 7 computer so anyone please gimme some answers. I probably left out some info so please ask. If anyone wants to call me thats fine by me. Thanks
Kenneth

Have you put the touchpad in developer mode? To do this, go to the just type line on the webos home screen and type "webos20090606" without the quotes. this will allow you to continue. If you would like me to assist you in depth, I can be reached via email at [email protected]. Additional help can also be found at webosnation.com in their forums
Sent from my HP Touchpad using Tapatalk 2

I ran egverything on my third computer and managed to get the root. No all i need is the dang novacom drivers! I downloaded the webosdoctor.jar file and tried to select the novacom driver but to no avail. I am at a loss. Hitting brick walls at every turn again. If it isnt one thing it is another it seems with this blasted tablet. Anyone able to hlep with this new issue please. Thanks

Okay. Anyone got any ideas? I got ACME installer2 opened a command line from " palm, inc" typed movacom.exe boot mem:// <ACMEInstaller2 in the command line and up until now it said cannot find system file specified but now it is saying unknown command.
I have copied acmeinstaller2 to the plam, inc file as well as copied the novacom.exe file to the location of acmeinstaller2. Any help is appreciated

There is a space after < ie // < ACMEInstaller2
Have you installed novacom correctly as the novacom.exe file should in the Palm, Inc folder when you open it along with along with a folder called novacomd and terminal and that is where you should put ACMEInstaller2 and for safety's sake ACMEUnistaller .
Hope that helps.

First of all thank you so much for replying. I appreaciate it very much. Now, i have novacom.exe , novacomd , and terminal in this folder. I tried the command prompt like you said but it couldnt fine specified folder.
My ACME installer 2 is showing to just be a file and my novacom.exe is an application is that correct? If not would you happen to know where i can get the correct files? Thanks agian.

Free Screenshots using Dalvik - not rec my phone?

I tried to follow the steps from androidandme to set up my phone for screen shots. I got java, got the android sdk and unzipped everything (nothing was installed?), changed the path under advanced settings, dowloaded eclipse (why not) and all that jazz - full 9 yards.
However, when I run ddms.bat in the tools folder and Dalvik comes up it never recognizes my phone. I have tried with the g1 mounted, unmounted, usb debugging on/off (which I also do not know what this means).
Anyone have any thoughts? I did not get any prompts about drivers and I am mounted to my computer.
Read the guides on how to install ADB.
for some reason when i ever i use ddms to take screen shots, i can't just go to take a screenshot, i have to run a logcat first, it will bring up a popup that says "failed!" i then close that and it runs a logcat, after i do that, then i can use it to take a screen shot.
^^ not sure how that matters but I double clicked the adb.exe file, a dos prompt ran a lot of info and disappeared. Also, your signature has a link to SDK 1.5, not 1.6?
Tried DDMS again with no luck.
^ I tried to do a logcat, failed, SS with no luck... again though, the issue is that my phone is not being identified - it would make sense that it would not work if it doesnt even know my phone is hooked up.
Perhaps I will sleep on it as work is in a few hours. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Sorry if this is not relevant, but I had a ton of trouble until I had the newest jave runtime installed. I never had trouble, got a new laptop at work and had no clue why it would not run. the newest JRE fixed it right up. Maybe not your problem but...
Also I like the program "droid explorer". It has screenshot built in.
EDIT.
I have one more thought...I (always have one more thought) try starting your phone in fastboot (camera and power) then back button when the skaters come up) and see if it asks for drivers then.

adb.exe is a command line application, it doesn't have a GUI. To use an command line app you have to 'cd' to the directory where it's located and enter valid commands. I think you can type 'adb help' for a full list of commands.
Try reinstalling the drivers, it took me a few tries to get it working right on Vista (interestingly no drivers are needed for OS X )
Let me start very basic. Is there any "installing" of the SPK? Or, do I just extract the files? I extracted them and created a directory in PATH like the site said to do.
If there is no installation... are you saying for me to get in dos and just start keying commands, and not using any of the files from the zip?
There is no installation, but EVERYTHING for the sdk is ran in command prompt. Meaning click start, click run, type in cmd, then type cd path/to/your/toolsfolder/ then type adb remount see if it does, if not you NEED TO FOLLOW THE ADB INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING DRIVERS.

need help rooting

trying to root 2.1 sprint hero, had the patched .6 version but redownloaded the .5 version on my phone, now says 2.27.651.5! Good right? Then I'm trying the regaw method for rooting. Downloaded the sdk, downloaded HTC Sync 2.0.33, downloaded hero-root. Renamed them to C:\android-sdk-windows\tools, went to the command prompt and typed it in. Then I type in adb devices and I get an error: adb not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I've checked debugging, and still get same error. Deleted files and redownloaded everything again and STILL get same error. Any help would be much appreciated
make sure you cd to that directory, or you can click-n-drag adb.exe (adb-windows.exe in some cases) into your CMD promt and type your command after... Little work around for odd computer setups
EDIT - you could also try to append the ".exe" at the end, i.e. >adb.exe devices
Thanks, I gave it a try! Still nothing,
Did you run the setup or did you just download, extract, and then run straight to CMD? try running the setup, don't download anything if you don't want to, and then try again.
I must be an idiot, the folder size is 54.2 mb. I'm at a loss. I will continue trying!!!!
Ok, total noob here! I've been at this for a while now and still can not get adb devices to recognize my phone. Device manager says everything working properly, drivers installed properly. I have searched and searched for an answer and still I can"t find one. Is there something I am doing wrong or have I not set up. All I want to do is root my phone, any answers would be a godsend.

ACMEinstaller issue

Been having issue trying to get ICS on my Touchpad..
Finally got to the stage where I have WebOS doctored, Full Wiped WebOS.
Now having a issue with the cmd script to kickstart the process.
Coming up saying The system cannot find the file specified?
I have created the folder in Root of touchpad put both moboot and ACMEinstaller in that folder.
What have I done wrong / missed out?
Please help
EDIT: Oops wrong section, Mods please move. Sorry
Before you run the command, copy the AcemInstaller to your novacom path .
So if you're in Windows open a CMD prompt to "C:\Program Files (x86)\HP webOS\SDK\bin", make sure you have AcmeInstaller in that folder, and run:
Code:
novacom boot mem:// < AcmeInstaller
P.S I'm 64bit OS so yours might just be "Program Files."
This may be too simple, but are you trying to use ACMEInstaller or ACMEInstaller2?
You need to use ver 2 for ICS
And Linux Newb, ACMEInstaller does not run from Windows. It's supposed to be on the Touchpad, which is where it needs to run. Novacom is simply the interface from your computer that tells the Touchpad to boot ACMEInstaller2 into memory. No files are transferred between computer and TP during the installation process (that is to say, after you've copied the files to the TP initially)
Jay, can you elaborate more on what your process was? We need some more details, such as:
1. Was the TP in USB flash mode?
2. Are you sure that novacom recognizes the device?
3. What did you name the folder where you placed the files?
Some more info will help us help you.

Nah, LinuxNewb is correct ACMEInstaller file should be in SDK\bin or Palm, inc folder either place will do.There is no need for it on the TP.
ps. a related post is in TP General section now.

[Q] Problem with Rooting Kindle Fire HD 7" Running 7.2.3

When I try to use this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035334 and I tried manual. With the manual I got to echo 'ro.kernel.qemu=1' > /data/local.prop but my permission was denied. On the first method while running the RunMe.bat file it cannot find the specified path then when running RootQemu.bat file it also says permission was denied and will not root. I know of all lot of people running into this problem but cannot find a solution and there seems to be nobody that can answer why or how it can be fixed, any help would be great! Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice you may have!
Update: I have ran all programs or files as administrater through Command Prompt and without CMD.

I had the same issues, tried everything over a day or two before I got it done. As with other poster not sure what fixed it but here is what I did then I will ask you what you did.
Manual says install java I thought what the heck that has to do with it, but what I found was not the jave browser version but java developer tools version. JDK something like that.
I also added the binary v18 file to KFHD and did the restore. Not sure if that what helped.
I also did not think though what I was doing. I used window explore to select the runme.bat or qemu.bat I did right click and select run as Admin but I do not think that is only running the bat file as an admin not the command window cammands. That must be what I did wrong, not SURE.
I have windows 7. From the start button I have cmd program there so I right click and selected run as admin. I then cd \ to root and then cd to the path of the program I wanted. qemu.bat or what you want to run now run the .bat file worked.. WOW I GOT ROOT.
Try all those steps and let me know it I helped if I did give me a thumbs UP. I hope I helped.

edit: just tried all 3 of the recovery files in the op and it still says same error message. any ideas? should i be renaming this from update-cwm blah blah, to the format that it is saying is accepted such as,
It will recognize as a compatible KitKat/DataMedia ROM files that look like:
cm-11-*-tenderloin.zip or
ev_tenderloin-nightly-2014.??.??.zip or
aokp_tenderloin_kitkat_*.zip
again im throwing the gapps-kk-20140105.zip in the ttinstall folder along with the update-cwm-jcs-dm-tenderloin.zip file and then ejecting the tp selecgint unmount media volume and am still getting the error message.

Can the Touchpad Toolbox be updated to so that it will accept GAPPS named pa_gapps-*4.4.4-*.zip instead of pa_gapps-*-4.4.2-*.zip?
Either that or remove or allow to skip the requirement that GAPPS zip must be present to do the "Install Android" selection. I eventually worked around it rejecting by renaming the 4.4.4 to 4.4.2 but it will probably frusturate novice users.

Anyone know if the charging dock will still work following an android installation?
Also, I will search for compatible rom builds, but do themes work as well? (Not sure why they wouldn't, just checking)

TP Toolbox failed; I'm OS-less; please help
I'm on a Mac.
I can't figure out how to make tptoolbox work on the Mac.
I went to a frustrated friend with a PC (Windows) who did not allow me enough time to complete my task.
My Touchpad is now OS-less, as in no OS; no WebOS, no Android.
I successfully did a full data wipe, twice. Thus no OS.
I couldn't get past the next step, install Android, on TPToolbox.
I got stimied after trying to copy the three files to the ttinstall folder. It said a proper recovery file was not found.
I followed the steps above to a T. I copied and pasted the three files from the windows batch to the ttinstall.
I realize in those three files there were no gapps, no recovery, no kitkat files.
So I hope I copied the right three.
Anyway, my frustrated impatient friend kicked me out, so I have no access to a PC anymore (just my old faithful Mac); I have a TP without an operating system on it; and I have no idea how to proceed (as I don't know which three files I'm supposed to copy and paste as it seems the ones I did copy and paste weren't the ones and there's no Gapps, no Recovery and no Android KitKat installs anywhere (I thought that would be within the TP Toolbox programme itself.)
Like I said, I clicked on the correct links, I went with JCSullins first link vs. the other two.
So somebody, anybody, write me back if they know either how I can proceed, or if I can just send you my TP and you can do a big favour for a small nobody.
Thanks everybody.
If not, anyone wanna buy a TP with no OS?
I still need help. HELP!
I still need help. Anybody? HELP!!!

Have you tried to install it using jcsullins recommendation that you use the Linux way with Mac?
Kit Kat working
OK, like the chap above, I moved the wrong three files into the ttinstall folder. I figured that out. It's the way the thread was written, easy to get confused as they have links right below and say it's those, when in fact it is not (a gapps, recovery and rom need to be moved in there, not the data version of android as that link downloads). Anyway, I sorted it out. Just putting closure on that. Thanks JCSullins! Now we need a Mac version so I need not borrow a friends PC laptop.

Have you tried running the script in terminal as jcsullins suggested?
C) Run the script provided with TPToolbox
Extract the contents of the TPToolbox zip file from above.
Navigate to the tptoolbox_v40 directory that was extracted from the zip.
On Windows, run the batch file named tptb_v40_win.bat
On Linux, run the script named tptb_v40_nix.sh
On Mac, try what I said for Linux and let me know what happens.

I did a quick search online and found that Macs don't handle the .sh command, rather the command is, believe it or not, .command.
More that that I'm a novice. So I can't say.
And that's when I went to borrow a friend's PC whereupon I double clicked the .win file, extracted it, then ran it in the ensuing window no problem.
--------------------
Now I'm glad someone is reading this thread. I have a question for you (or anyone). Now that I've TP Toolbox'd my HP Touchpad (and I did not select the option to install WebOS on it), how do I transfer files from my Mac (preferred method) to the HP Touchpad now?
I put it in recovery mode (the big USB sign) but it didn't show up on my Mac desktop. It was unrecognized in the Finder too.
So I went back to my friend on hands and knees and am now using TP Toolbox to put an updated file into the ttinstall folder. Is TP Toolbox now the only way to get files on and off my Touchpad? Say it ain't so (and walk me through the process if it ain't so).
There must be an easier way. What am I to do? Please help. Thanks.

From a search on Google (I don't have a Mac):
First in terminal make the script executable by typing:
chmod a+x (yourscriptname)
Then in finder right-click your file and select "Open with" and then "Other...".
Here you select the application you want the file to execute into, in this case it would be Terminal. To be able to select terminal you need to switch from "Recommended Applications" to "All Applications".
NOTE that unless you don't want to associate all files with this extension to be run in terminal you should not have "Always Open With" checked.
After clicking OK you should be able to execute the script by simply double-clicking it.

chmod a+x (viz)
(With brackets, as you did)
Or
Chmod a+x viz
(Without the brackets)
Again, what is my scriptname?
3. Is this related to quetion 1? Does yor response suggest all files must niw be xferred using tptoolbox (in the method you described) if im using a mac and that there is no other way to accomlish that task?

TP Toolbox on a Mac
This system will not allow me to post my questions. It claims I have a URL in my message (which I do not) and won't allow me to post.
Is there another way to contact you?
Another email? Forum? Etc.?
I saved my questions as I can not submit them here.
There's a problem with the XDA forum.

Thanks. I followed your link (to google) and read many results. The easiest looking result, which almost worked was this:

it was the fourth result, entitled: "How to run a unix shell script from the Mac Finder"
I followed those instructions.
Terminal opened (launched from the Finder window using their noted technique) and here is what was displayed in Terminal: (please note: I exchanged my computer name from it's real name to ABC and XYZ (for this thread; not my real computer name).

ABC:~ XYZ$ /Users/XYZ/Downloads/HP\ Touchpad\ Tools/tptoolbox_v40/tptb_v40_nix.command ; exit;
Cannot find Touchpad Toolbox binary file TPToolbox-2014-05-18-v40.bin
logout
[Process completed]
I do see the .bin file in the same folder, the TPToolbox folder, as tptb_v40_nix.sh (which, by the way, I duplicated and changed the extension from .sh to .command, prior to searching in Finder as outlined in above links' description).
So I don't know what to do.
I know a lot of things you likely do not know; but you clearly know more about computers than I. Please be patient and explain succinctly.
I tried your method, first replied from , with and without brackets, that didn't help.

Regarding Android File Transfer, and I thank the contributor below for chiming in with that advice, I've used that, but it only works sometimes. It is not reliable; and doesn't see ALL the files (as a WebOS USB connection to my Mac used to).
Is there some way to put the HP Touchpad into USB mode and connect it to my Mac (like I used to before on the HP WebOS side (when I had an HP WebOS side)? This may be argument enough to keep the WebOS side. (I can put it in USB mode on Android, but the Mac does not recognize the HP Touchpad at all doing it that way).
---------------------------------------------------------------
Another unrelated question: What ever happened to PreWare? I can't find it anywhere. I installed Jason Robitaille's WebOS QuickInstall 4.5.0 and ran it ok. But when one clicks on the globe, there's no Preware. When one clicks on the Search field , there are zero results (except themes). No Applications, Kernels, Patches, etc.. Nothing. So what ever happened to Preware?
Not having been able to find that, and with Palm no longer supporting WebOS at all after Jan 15, 2015, was the nail in the coffin for WebOS for me. If I can't find Preware and all the apps and tweaks that come along with it, the only reason I can see keeping any WebOS on this tablet at all is to be able to put it in to WebOS USB mode and easily connect it to my Mac.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Lastly, I'm running JCSullins build titled/dated: cm-11-20141002-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin.zip
How do I take a screenshot with this ROM? It used to be Power button and lower volume button, but that screenshot option is no longer available in this JCSullins build, nor in the previous build: cm-11-20140625-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin.zip
Any ideas how to take a screenshot?

My guess is that executing the shell script by double-clicking starts it in the wrong directory. Open a terminal in the directory where you have the Toolbox files and execute it from the command line there.
