Do you use your N7 in tablet or phablet mode? - Nexus 7 General

Curious as to what you all use, see what the majority is.

Errm, what's a Phablet?

I assume he means the phone style (stock) vs. tablet style (requires root).

Fabulous tablet. But you gotta say it with a lisp.

Just a term I heard used, because the UI is hybrid tablet/phone. Phone + Tablet = Phablet.

Will be using rob43's Salad Bar II as soon as it comes out.
Tablet mode is unsatisfactory to me, as the back button is put on the far left of the screen, while I favor my right hand.

Stock but fully locked in landscape mode.

tablet mode

Just got mine today and turning in tablet was the second thing I did (after rooting it ). I'm not fully committed to it yet. There seems to be a bit of wasted space on the home screen where you can't put widgets or icons but I think I prefer it to phablet.

I tried Tablet ui, but in my opinion, it wasn't that good. I actually love the phone ui as it looks just right and to me, it's perfect just the way it is

I am using true tablet mode, I exclusively use my N7 in landscape, unless an app forces me to use portrait so it just works better.

Phone UI.

I want to use it in tablet mode but i keep reading about issues people are having so i haven't tried it. I did like the layout on my transformer prime better.
Mostly i dislike the centered navigation buttons(I use mine in landscape pretty much always) and the landscape lockout on the home screen. If someone could modify the launcher only into tablet mode without a dpi or build.prop change I'd try it.

There's a free app called Set Orientation that lets you lock everything in landscape mode.

It's called Hybrid UI. Phablet UI would be something designed for actual phablets, such as the Galaxy Note.

I enjoy the hybrid UI. I'm already used to my Galaxy Nexus and it's great to be able to have them set up almost identical to one another. I like the having consistency between my devices.

I'm digging the latter, but I prefer to name it the 'tablone'

not a fan of the true tablet mode on this guy ..... I like it set up just like my GSIII

As my SIG states....

Using the hybrid atm. Sounds sad but I'm too lazy to switch it over plus I got a replacement coming and it would be pointless for me to. I actually like the hybrid myself.

The "updated" Pulse reader stinks!

Today the Pulse RSS reader got an update, and my experience has been disappointing!
Pulse is\was one of my favorite apps... the older versions (available until today) allowed about 6 feeds to be viewable in landscape mode.
It seems like they changed the resolution for the rows, ans now I can only see 2.5 rows on the whole screen!
Perhaps they'll sort this out later, but for today I would recommend NOT downloading the update if you use Pulse on a Gtablet (VEGAn 5.1).
Just wanted to spare everyone else the disappointment. Also... there is no setting in the app to change the new resolution. If I'm wrong, please share!
Also, if anyone was smart enough to save an old .apk, could you be kind enough to link it here?
There is already another thread for Pulse and someone has posted a link to the old version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10735980#post10735980
Oh thanks sjmoreno. I got the old apk. Thank goodness!
The updated Pulse doesn't even show up in the Market for me. I guess I'm lucky?
They plan on releasing an update to fix this today.

I used Titanium and went back to 1.8 on the G. Must admit the larger size is nice on the Incredible. Too hard to see the smaller thumbnails with 3.7" display.
Pulse needs an option for small and large thumbs for this reason.
I may not update Pulse on my Inc and keep 1.9.
Even the update sucks...
It only scales it very minimally, so instead of 2 rows being shown now there are 3.
Fail for tablets!

I agree, and am disappointed. Why break something like this?

What looks great on a 7" or 10" tablet looks microscopic on a phone. Almost all of the market is driven by phone displays. On my Incredible, I prefer the update far better than 1.8, but prefer 1.8 far better on the G.
Keeping 1.8 on the G and 1.91 on the Inc. Dev should offer BOTH size options, rather than trying to choose sides.

Best Keyboard App?

What keyboard do you guys find the most responsive on the Note?
I swore by Smart Keyboard Pro on my Dell Streak as it could keep up with my typing and seemed like the most responsive on the Streak at the time, but I find it nowhere near as responsive on the Note.
I recently started using Go Keyboard on the Note and have so far found it much more responsive. I set it up with the midnight theme, 4 landscape keyboard height and no pop up characters when typing and I find it has been the only keyboard that has been able to keep up with me if I try to type at crazy speeds. Great things about it are that it is totally free and very customizable!
Let me know your thoughts.
Swiftkey was the one I went for after testing all of them. The fastest for me.

I already tried Swiftkey and didn't get on with it as well as Go Keyboard. I remember trying Go Keyboard on the Streak and not liking it as much as Smart Keyboard Pro back then, so it is either a device difference or maybe the Go Development Team have made some improvements since.
swiftkey x, give you the best word to choose when writing and the fast one to.
Ps: you can even reduce the space it show by the keyboard on the screen.
Try the ICS keyboard from the market its pretty good. Plus is free

Agreed.
On a side note, any one knows a way to pop up Samsung keyboard (handwriting mode) on a-pen detection, even if it using a party keyboard? ?
I'm using Swype ,but I'd love to be able to use pen writing once I click on the screen with the pen (which is possible only using the stock Samsung keyboard)

Great tip! I just tried the one by VLLWP and it seems to respond very well to crazy fast typing. I think I will stick with it for now until something better comes along.
my keyboard
This is thumbs keyboard with my settings on it...... I think this thing is really fast
I like Thumb Keyboard. Swiftkey not so much; it's a little too smart for me.
Right now i'm using Swiftkey because of the arrow buttons. Im sort of happy with it.
i just downloaded the ICS keyboard.
I must say it is very good!
I was using smart keyboard. although it is fast, but i found it laggy, like if i type really fast it won't detect some of the letters.
but with ICS it detect all the letters i press!

Even I have the same question. I am using the "AI keyboard" free version and I am pretty much loving it. I liked Go Keyboard as well.
But whichever app I use, I miss the handwriting mode for S-Pen. So I keep switching back to Samsung keyboard now and then.
I like Go keyboard best.
I like Perfect Keyboard. It's the quickest and smoothest for me, all other keyboards lag unfortunately...
used better keyboard for a while, it was good but it lacks arrow keys.
then i started to use smart keyboard and once customized, best keyboard yet, well worth the buy
I'm also with Thumb keyboard, very good one!
I used to use Smart Keyboard Pro on my SGS2 and Dell Streak, worked fine. It has a lot of lag on the SGN.
I now use Ultra Keyboard. The best and most configurable Love it.
Bought SwiftKey X, absolutely fantastic auto correction and unlike all the other android keyboards that I tried, doesn't lag when you hit a key.

Best launcher and its setting for tablet

Hi,
Im using Nexus 7 right now. Its a pretty device (although Ill probably sell it, its too little, Im looking for something bigger). In case of 10" tablet, I would probably stick to the landscape position for all the time, maybe except when reading. But here, Im tempted to use both vertical and horizontal positions. Trouble is when it comes to launcher. I hoped at least the stock launcher would be "rotation ready" but it is not - when I put some widget in when vertical, it gets crushed in horizontal.
My question - is there a launcher capable of keeping different icon/widget positions according to the position of the tablet? Apex for example has many options to set, but that is not this case ...
I don't have any problem with Nova rotating widgets.

Huh, not doing that here. I'm running PA2.99 in tablet mode. Might have something to do with the display difference.

Not sure what PA2.99 is but its clearly caused by the display properties. If only there was some launcher with more settings for different positions ...

You can resize the widgets dude. Or play with home screen grid size. You have to play with it to make it look and feel the way ya want. I find the process rather fun actually. Oh yea I'm talking about nova launcher btw
Personally, I'm gonna vote for apex. Smooth & stable, with plenty of customization.

two sided keyboard

looking to see if someone could come up with a way of porting the two sided keyboard from the samsung slate 7 onto our tab/ making it into an app.
if any of you dont know what i mean, im talking about the built in ability that windows NT offers to have two halves of a whole keyboard on either side of the tablet when used in landscape mode, so you dont have to stretch your thumbs all the way to the centre when using it..
if this is possible it would be great to see as i think alot of people would like to try it...
thanks for listening everyone!

Please try Swiftkey tablet that might work for you.
Swype Beta also has a split-keyboard mode, in both portrait and landscape.
Cheers, will try them both now.

You might want to try floatnsplit keyboard. You can customize everything.

[TOP TIP] Auto hide on screen buttons by swiping up

Hey guys,
I'm new over here because I just upgraded from my Xperia S to an Xperia T (dont ask haha) so hi .
basically the first thing I thought when using the phone was what a waste the buttons were as they took up quite a good part of the screen, and so despite being 0.3" bigger than the Xperia S this was not noticeable. I also hated the aspect ratio of the screen love a good 16:9
anyway after searching on here and around for ages I finally came across a simple solution that works very well
its this app here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.hidesoftkeys
I bought the pro version and its def worth it, because this is such an amazing set up!
sorry if this is already well known on here, but thought I'd share anyway, oh and if you find you can't activate the buttons in the camera mode its because you have to swipe from the side (it thinks its landscape, same with full screen games)
Very nice, I love this
I like it too

Thanks, just had a play with it. but prefer the one I posted in this thread because you can customise much more like make the icons xperia and not google nexus style, also it hides the current on screen buttons without needing to do anything yourself so more simple for people.
also guys what I realised is its best to select 'spoof soft keys' otherwise apps will open without the more options button so you'll have no way to get into further settings etc.
