CM10 Development - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

I am thinking of selling my Velocity, not that I really want to love the thing, however the security restraints and general hard to develop nature of this device is turning me off HTC.
So get to the point you ask
Just putting it out there its not a request, demand by any means I just wanna know if there is anything CM10 in the pipe line due for release soon or is it to hard because of the bad HTC code and security.
I would like to keep the Velocity but there are easier devices out there.

Anything cm10 wise will be at tootz, which you know is on hold...don't think anyone here is really building from source...maybe in the future I may give it a try...but idk

I have only had HTC since I got android, I did some low end stuff with the DHD I had. Upgraded to the Velocity and have not been happy since gonna see if I can somehow get my hands on a GS3 from what I have read it is pretty easy to dev and plenty has been done with it already.
I would like the help bud as I need to learn how to do this for myself I am already setting up a dedicated Ubuntu PC and get things happening
Start doing something constructive unlike the other night :silly:

Sounds like a good idea...I've never attempted to build from source, but I have a guy in the infuse section that's gonna walk me through it, gonna get a new 1tb hard drive on Sunday...500gb for windows and 500gb for ubuntu-that should give me plenty of room for building from source as I hear it takes like 20gb just for one build...once I get started ill be happy to help you
What little knowledge I have is decompiling apks and doing minor edits to xml and smali files (for tweaks) unfortunately none of that knowledge does me any good here on the vivid as I can't seem to get apktool to work with the vivid :/
So hopefully sometime between mid week to the end of the week ill be ready to start helping...hopefully

Not a good idea man. HTC has gone too far with locking things down, but Samsung has started on that path. They locked down the Verizon GS3 (it's been cracked, but still) and people are having huge issues with flashing. Many of the dual core GS3's are losing their IMEI after flashing. The grass doesn't look much greener on the other side anymore.

I'm going to see how I like mine by Christmas time, in which I'm buying a Nexus if I don't like it by then. It's not just htc for me it's nexus or nothing from now on. We have a pretty common chipset, we should have a development forum filled with aosp and aokp roms but we don't? Why? Because security is off the chain. It's a taste of things to come honestly. By next year look for android phones to be completely locked down with almost no updates anymore. They are becoming the new feature phones.
But HTCs s thing is ridiculous. It's another hurdle that doesn't exist on every other manufacturer. My captivate was completely unlocked from the factory, rooting took 5 minutes and you kept your data.

Where did you hear this?
These are the files you need to port a device. They need to be altered severely to run on the incs. Extreme development knowledge is needed to make use of this. However a developer could grab bits and pieces from it if they have greater knowledge in one area than another.
The ics update will be coming to this and many other htc devices as stated yesterday to myself in a bell store by an htc rep.

"Right now[...]"
You see? I'm talking about what they've said so far, but what'll happen in the future; sorry, I can't tell and therefore I won't do anything else then hope that HTC will give us an official update to 4.0.
But from what Google said when they showed 4.0, I think that it'll come to the IncS. Sometime.
And to your last part; no, they didn't.
"We’re continuing to assess our product portfolio, so stay tuned for more updates on device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Ice Cream Sandwich."
From the same link that I linked in my previous post. So, I'm fully aware of the fact that this only seems to be a preliminary statement from HTC.

Samsung ICS FAIL, how will HTC do?

I can't help but to laugh at this. I thought ICS wasn't going to be tampered with as much by all the phone makers. This is a video uploaded by SamsungFirmwares (unofficial leak) so I assume it is pretty much what they are getting on the GSII or Skyrocket. What a fail. Glad I didn't switch to the Skyrocket or GSII, I feel bad for all you that did. I'll take a locked (soon to be unlocked by Evil) Vivid rather than the crap Samsung is making with ICS. Can't wait to see what HTC does with ICS.

that may be, but for the OP to claim that it was official Samsung that uploaded the video is inaccurate. that leak is very beta with many unworking features. i'm not sure why anyone would think that manufacturers werent going to rape ICS anyway. Sense has some serious polish to it though. Look at the intuitive lockscreen HTC made with the rings, now compare it to the Touchwiz lockscreen. Touchwiz widgets have nothing on Sense too. The way Sense links everything is very unique too. I don't find Touchwiz that different from AOSP at all... That's why I got so bored with development on the Infuse.

I'm a graphic designer and thus am probably more picky than most... but... that's called Bad Color Representation.
When white is displayed as light blue and green looks neon green, your display is either broken or, just simply junk...
If your TV looked like that, you'd return it.
I have no idea why people seem to think it is not only acceptable, but preferable in their phone.
and yes, I have owned one... for 1 week... I actually cringed when my phone would ring, because it meant I had to look at that screen.... I returned it for my sanity, stating "it must be defective, Samsung could not have done that on purpose".

Seems like there are 2 available and the developers have moved away from xda. One is made by Pirateghost and called Rum Float: http://blog.androidninjas.com/rom-dev/htc-vivid/rum-float/
The other is made by WildChild and you have to register to see the vivid section here: http://www.wcxxperia-nce.com/

Hi xda,
It would seem that I've jumped into this a little late, but what happened to make all the cooks leave xda and ignore the Vivid, Velocity etc.
Sorry but I've been away from xda for about 12 months while living in Blackberry-land.
I'd really like an ICS ROM for my Velocity without HTC's bastard 'Sense' bloatness.
Also - is getting root access to the Velocity as easy as it was for the HD2?

IMO its the lesser of all evils. Every brand has their own "skin". So even if you prefer AOSP, you might as well get the brand with the best looking and best functioning skin. Of course there is the nexus phones, but those aren't for everyone.

Agreed. I just don't know that I could talk myself into the investment of a device that runs software that I hated, with the possibility of not be able to change it. Granted there are things being worked on now (CM9), but let's be real, this phone was released in November and to this point we haven't seen anything Sense-less (for reasons beyond the dev's control - just got kernel source 10 days ago fcs), it would be very tough for me to buy the device at this point if I hated Sense . I don't know how long shayla's had theirs though...

S-off discussion

Starting this thread for any discussion of the s-off tool in development or s-off talk in general. Hopefully this will help keep the development thread clear of chatter.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA
Good idea, I wish there was more of this on XDA.
Perhaps if for each development project there was a dedicated thread for chatter, expressions of thanks, etc people would feel more comfortable using it.
Development threads might not grow to thousands of entries, with almost 0% of the entries actually about development.
I'm new here, post count is very low - but my posting habits won't change when I eventually get to 10 posts - unless I do get around to actually doing some Android development I can't see a reason for posting in the dev area.
I guess though that some dev's may prefer it the way it is, as a sign of recognition, or something...
Russell
thank you for doing this, i was just thinking the same thing
Yay we can yap! ..lol.. is it done yet? Jk..i hope we get it soon. I hate being left behind on GB cuz of my non-upgraded bootloader..
Sent from my HTC Raider X710e using Chuck Norris.
Honestly you are not missing much imo. GB was so damn efficient I don't see a huge revolutionary change. ICS is very smooth and fast with the help of the developers many to be named I don't want to leave anyone out. But don't feel like you're so far behind bc you are not. Only recently has there been a few more roms to try out.
will s-off make it say easier to get ASOP type roms on to this phone?
Not necessarily, but it will work for all devices (vivid, holiday, velocity) with no porting and wou will be able to flash everything right from your phone, no computer needed.

Having s-off has its advantages. Having being part of the beta I can tell its great.
The best for it is being really for developing New Roms and aosp. Makes a lot less of a hassle to flash New kernels and firmware.
I'm sure we won't have to wait much longer for the beta to be over, its a fairly simple process but they have to make sure its foolproof so we don't have a lot of bricks like we suffered with the ota release that happened.

if becomes S-off, then I would like to try porting sense 4.0..
Sense 4.0 port would be great. From the devs I spoke with the radio is their issue also. Seems everything is hanging on cracking that issue

yeah i'm hoping for a hTC One X port that way i don't have to run out and get the One X when its released here in Canada and be stuck with the low 16GB and non expandable memory.
I mean who comes up with these ideas to ofter 16GB for the LTE version yet the Internationale has 32GB.
Anyways getting off topic S-Off WOOOT

I also know it. but It's not perfect yet. I would like to make a more complete..
Bananacakes love your holiraider Rom and I could see you doing some great things with sense 4.0. You should lurk the irc channels a bit. Seems like the easiest way to get any news about s-off is just hanging out in the channel. I was really lucky to be there at the right time and got it. Don't bug them but mention your a dev and you'd like to be able to work on ics builds but you have a raider.

uhmmm, but I don't know sure how I gets a s-off..
and I would like feedback on that issue but i don't know English well enough to give appropriate feedback.. So I figured the sensible thing to do was to wait..
Am I understanding the situation correctly?

Yes, I've seen too..

Got my new Vivid!

Arrived today from Amazon (penny phone!). Called my brother, he reported good volume and very clear quality. Seemed the same on my end, so my call volume and quality is not a problem.
Activation was easy, and set-up included a question about HTC-something or other that would check on my phone use. I was able to decline that, but I intend to get rid of all the CIQ stuff.
Right now it is upgrading to ICS, I am looking forward to it.
Wheee!

It's a good phone. It's not a crack flashers phone but it's a good solid phone but I will warn you the ics rom brings some new bugs with it. I might reccomend the one x over it at this point because it's newer and has less risk of eol status but if you need a removable battery and expandable storage than this is the phone for you and if your coming from an old single core 512mb of ram setup android phone than this phone will feel like a rocket

Welcome! I'm new to the dev scene here myself too but it's not hard to get started, especially with the Vivid. I did the S-off trick with a coated paper clip in one try, you just need to be careful and get the right contacts. Just be sure to read the SuperGuide, the Guide, and the Tutorials before actually downloading any zips and trying to flash them. It's very very important to thoroughly read all directions, as the people around here know exactly what works and what will brick your phone... I know from experience as I'm on my second Vivid.
Once you're Boot Unlocked, Rooted, and S-off, the Vivid is your oyster and you'll have a ton of fun flashing it with new ROMs, Kernals, and MODs.

I have yet to see miui for the vivid. Obviously I'm looking in the wrong place. I am used to all of the phones I have had with tons and tons of roms but I guess some phones get better marketing than others and are a lot more popular.
I think there is one, but it's basically sense stripped stock rom with the miui features added

Thanks to all, seems like a great group. My last phone was an LG Optimus V, and compared to that the Vivid is a rocket!. Very snappy. I rooted it, took the sd-card from the Optimus and put it in the Vivid. DL'd TiBu and restored all my apps and their data. All working the way I like it.
I have been lurking on these forums for a couple of weeks, got lots of good tips already. I'll post some screen shots one of these days. I am not much of a Sense fan, prefer my old favorite launcher. Slowly de-bloating the thing, ATT puts way too much junk on the phones, but they all do.
Thanks again.

Screen Shots
As promised, a couple of screen shots. Notice the app drawer, I have 50% transparency on that. Also notice the icons at the bottom. The first is All apps, second is Apps I installed, third is called Tools and I can put anything I want in there, same for the fourth one called Fun.
My widget is BeWeather Pro. The only app I put on my home screen is ICE: Emergency. I recommend it.
Welcome! I have to say that you picked one of the harder devices to develop for, but there's a strong community here and elsewhere. There are many things in motion for this device, although you may have to look elsewhere for them.
