So this is the reason I've seen so many iPad users think or actually get the nexus 7 to replace their iPad!! Cheers dude, and yeah slightly better audio.

Nexus 7 has a quad core CPU and a 12 core GPU. VS iPad's dualcore CPU and GPU, but iPad has line-out for audiophiles with external DAC's

hey mate have you seen any CPU benchmarks comparing the ipad to the nexus

Benchmarks are interesting but useless, try running IOS with nvidia tegra 3 the results would be different. Don't quote me but I think the reason android score less sometimes is because of the OS itself

I wouldn't say the iPad3 front facing camera is actually any better.
The only test that I have seen that compared them was fatally flawed because it failed to do a Android -> Android Google Talk chat, instead bizarrely opting for a Ipad -> Android cross platform, cross protocol chat...
Shouldn't the price be up there? You can buy 2x Nexus7's for the price of 1 iPad.... Also when comparing tablet apps, the Android tablet apps tend to be as good, if not better than iPad tablet apps. There aren't as many (currently) however.
You can also add:
Cheaper / Easier to develop on Android ($25 one off fee Mac/Win/Linux/Onboard dev enviroments, VS $100 a year for iOS and you have to buy a Mac)
USB Host mode and MTP transfers (drag and drop content - No iTunes tiein)
WAY better bundled apps (Google Maps for example)
Wireless app installs (don't think Apple has this)
LEGAL sideloading without having to jailbreak and void warranty.,
Custom ROMS

Does the Nexus 7 have DLNA
Yea its strange even tho the nexus has higher mb for the camera the ipads seems better
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRS7YaJIEsw&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL54999AB91D35C39F

Seems like an ok list except for the "Premium Feel" and "Better Audio". I got rid of my iPad 3 for the Nexus 7 and to me the Nexus 7 feels way better than the iPad 3 (AKA "New"). Audio, to me at least, is better on the Nexus 7.
I can definitely say I enjoy the Nexus 7 more than the iPad 3, it's so much more fun.

Op said something about the Nexus keyboard apps but on both devices can a Bluetooth keyboard work?

i did a google chat with my friend side by side and i thought the video he was seeing from my nexus 7 was actually very decent..
i know it seems obvious to compare it to the ipad but the size difference alone makes it quite difficult.. its like comparing apples to....

i think the video quality sucks only when you use Skype for Video Call, since the Nexus 7 is not certified by Skype

Nexus 7, no need to load the iTunes malware package.

To me it seemed like battery life was better on my iPad, but my nexus 7 charges ALOT faster.

Remove 'better viewing angle' from iPad3. Brightness falls off significantly on the iPad3 if not directly centered in front. IMHO, Nexus 7 has better viewing angle.

You can add usb controller support and play store access for the nexus 7. Since I had an android phone, that was a big reason i switched to the nexus 7.

Don't forget to add the most important feature the movable left screen *sarcasm* this third unit better be good

does the wifi ipad 3 have a GPS

iPad gestures are very cool, and I love using them. However, I just installed GMD Gesture Control and they work even better on the N7. Plus, you can customize them in any way you want! Best $5 I've spent on the play store.
I think the new iPad wins for full-size PDF, gaming, basic browsing, and draining your credit card. For everything else, there's the nexus 7 . I seriously love this thing!

My iPad 3 looks perfect from any angle without fading. However I'd also removing this as a pro because I think the Nexus 7 looks just as good at angles. Both are IPS displays, so viewing angles really shouldn't be an issue.

And by gaming, I mean overall selection. The size and feel in your hands is far superior for gaming on the N7.

Milestone's worth buying?

hey guys... i´m from Brazil...
so... it´s not that easy to buy a good android phone with a low price... so...
you guys think that... milestone A853 still a good phone? it worth yet?
cya
it's definitely still a good phone =]
and since it's been rooted there are custom roms and other cool customisations coming out daily!
the a853 is a little powerhouse, too (especially with a good overclock )

I agree....
I mean the level of customization is very high...Basically this is a mini-laptop...And the Qwerty keyboard is great once you get use to it...
Overclocking unveils the power of this phone...
With the New GOT 2.2.1 Release of the Froyo Android and flash support your browsing experience is mostly like on your PC...
I sincerely recommend this phone...I have it for 2 and half months now and I'm very satisfied with it!
i wouldnt buy it if i were u , 256 mb of ram is not enough specially if u use a lot of widgets , besides milestone 2 is coming out this month
If you can get it for a good price, then it's still a fine buy. 256Mb RAM is fine for FroYo. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't understand memory usage.
Once overclocked and running a good ROM, the Milestone is a match for most of the newer and far more expensive (on the secondhand market) Androids.
The Milestone still has the best screen of any Android phone:
- 97% color gamut, more accurate and better than the iPhone 4
- almost 1,500:1 static contrast, higher than iPhone 4 and destroys crap like the Xperia X10
- true multi-touch screen, a rarity with Androids.
Of course, the Milestone 2 is a significant upgrade in speed, memory, and camera, but it is not cheap.

better than the galaxy s? it has more constrast than the phone i agree on that one , i compared the black levels with my ipod touch 4 and the milestone indeed has deeper blacks but youre forgetting about the and what about the HORRIBLE color banding?
Yes, better than the Galaxy S: http://www.displaymate.com/Smartphone_ShootOut_1.htm
The color banding issue is not because of the Milestone's LCD but is due to Android's awful 16-bit Gallery. Even FroYo has this problem. Google is responsible for this and needs to fix it.
The Milestone 2 uses the same LCD as the Milestone.
Personally, I prefer the iPhone 4's display to anything else on the market because of its low reflectance (awesome for outdoor usage) and high resolution, but the Milestone has higher contrast and higher color gamut than the iP4.
I still believe that the Milestone/Milestone 2 is the best Android display there is because they have better contrast and higher DPI than the Droid X. I do not like the Galaxy S screen at all for reading text.

I will agree that the Milestone screen is very nice. I would have loved it if my Nexus One used that screen. I hate the AMOLED used in current phones. Stupid PenTile pixel arrangement makes text look like CRAP.
When overclocked, the CPU in the Milestone is no problem.
256MB RAM though is a bit of an issue. It will run any program fine, but it will start closing background tasks far earlier than phones with 512MB will. You might be in the browser, switch to facebook, and then back to the browser and notice it reloading everything because it shut it down.

i love the iphone screen, i dont like the size tough, nothing beat 4 inches
as far as i know the superamoled does NOT use pentile, am i wrong?
It's a great phone, limited only by your own ability to realize it's potential. Launcher pro, android agenda widget, weather and toggle widget, note everything.. Build your device to your needs!

Yes, the Galaxy S uses pentile matrix. Read that article.
I've owned 3 different versions of the phone, so believe me, I know.
Anyway, I feel that 4-inches is too large for 800x480. I used to believe that 960x640 is too high for 3.5" on the iP4, but it really does look wonderful, even for tiny text. There is no need to zoom in on most web pages.

3 versions of the phone? u mean captivate, vibrant, etc? yes the iphone screen is effing awesome, so crisp, too bad the black levels are HORRIBLE
The iP4's black levels are acceptable for an LCD: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3903/apples-ipod-touch-2010-review-not-a-poor-mans-iphone-4/2
It's the iTouch 4 whose LCD is awful. Its black levels are about as bad as the old iPhone!
I was going to get an iTouch and just use a cheap CrapBerry but just couldn't live with the iPod's awful blacks and low contrast.

f*ck! i feel deceived! i swore it was the same display, no wonder the black levels look horrible to me , why isnt this mentioned on the ipods reviews? and dont it evne get me started on the camera my milestone takes better pics and videos! ohhh apple
I to recommend this phone. I am very happy with it. Battery life isn't the most stellar, but not a "deal-breaker" for me. With some creative fine-tuning of the settings, I will get more "mileage" out of the battery.
The keyboard took a little getting used to, but once accustomed to it, it works great. The only other phone I would look at other than this one is either the new Milestone 2 (more expensive) and the HTC Desire Z. The keyboard on it is quite nice. Personally, I need a physical keyboard for my phones that I use, so that limits me on what I can use in Android phones.
I traded my Nokia N900 for the Milestone, couldn't be happier.
I was jealous at the speed and smoothness of my friend's iPhone 4, but then I installed LauncherPro - let me tell ya, I'm not jealous anymore haha. I think's he's gonna be jealous at mine pretty soon for the speed and the fact that I do with it whatever I want - It's my device, unlike how all iPhones don't really belong to you but to Apple.
Also to note the incredible build quality and aluminum chasis - it really feels like a premium device (which it is)
Apple had to use a much cheaper LCD for the iPod Touch because reportedly, the IPS panel in the iPhone 4 costs $90 (approx.) just for the part alone. There's no way that Apple can make a profit off the iPod Touch by using the same panel.
The new Touch is still a nice upgrade over the old one. It just isn't anywhere near the iPhone 4.

Ipad to a Nook

So the others day I made the plunge from an ipad to the Nook Color. So far im pretty impressed, being the huge gadget junkie that I am. With that being said of course I have a few complaints.
1. Android tablets lack polish. Things on the ipad that just worked seem to require solutions on the nook. I do understand that I'm using a hacked device so i take that into consideration but playing decent quality youtube should be a know brainer
2. The speaker is bad. I know this is intended to be an ebook reader but my kindle is louder, no excuse.
On to the stuff I love.
1. 7" is the perfect size for a tablet, apple should take note.
2. The keyboard is amazing and it will allow you to add words to the built in dictionary. Apple clearly dropped the ball on this.
3. The screen is great, nice and crisp. It's been a joy to read on.
4. The potential, I've grown sick of waiting on apple to add simple features. Android is a blessing. I'm looking forward to new roms and froyo in the near future.
Sent from my Nook Color using XDA App
I agree the 7" is perfect size for a tab. Walkin around with a 10" tab looks retarded.
Missing #5 You saved a boatload of money by choosing Geico (NC)
I have a 10 inch iPad and a 4 inch Galaxy S Vibrant phone. And now a 7 inch Nook Color that fills the gap inbetween.
My list of issues with the Nook.
1. Slower.
Browsing the web, market place, and some other apps feels much slower on the NC than the iPad, even slower than my Vibrant. This is rooted with Dolphin HD. It's acceptable, but wish it could be quicker. And I expect Android 2.2 will help alot (I'm using a custom Android 2.2 ROM on my Vibrant).
2. Screen is tacky.
The screen feels rough or tacky. It's not very smooth at all. Makes pinching and scrolling a little more awkward than it should be. Wish it was smoother, I suppose it will get a little smoother over time. But I don't think it'll ever feel as smooth as the iPad or Vibrant did out of the box. I guess this is some coating on the phone to make reading easier? I might have to try out a screen shield to see if they can offer a smoother finger gliding experience.
3. Battery life.
Battery life is very poor compared to the iPad (probably average for an Android device). With the iPad I never even think about the battery, I always have plenty. But with my Android phone and NookColor, battery is a constant worry and I need to keep the charger on hand.
This items are both good and bad at the same time.
1. Heavy/Sturdy.
It's heavier than I expected. I read it's heavier than the Galaxy Tab and Archos 70. However it also has a very solid sturdy feeling.
2. Ugly/Comfortable.
The bevel is ugly, mostly because of that hideous loop at the bottom. Also that loop makes accessing the microSD slot more difficult than it should be. Also not a fan of the rounded raised bevel around the screen. However the rounded edges and the rubber back do make it comfortable to hold.
What I like about the Nook over the iPad.
1. It's Android.
I'm not an Apple fan. I've really tried my best to avoid buying any Apple products because I don't like the walled garden, locked down, controlling nature of Apple products. Having an Android tablet means I have much greater freedom to what I want with the OS and apps. I imagine there will be some nice custom ROMs I'll be able to install on the Nook some day that will improve the speed issues I have now and add a lot more features.
2. Screen looks great.
While I don't like the feel of the screen, I do love how it looks. It's definitely not better than the iPad, however it's one of the best on an Android tablet. I imagine only the Galaxy Tab equals or betters it. Looks good from any angle.
3. Price.
I think the iPad is a very quality piece of hardware with very polished software and certainly worth the $500 I spent. But the Nook Color is probably even more impressive for what you get at half the price.
Having owned an ipad until last week and currently own two android devices (captivate and nookcolor)
Here are my observations
-Book apps are not that far from each other but the children books score a big thumbs up for nookcolor (not really important for me since i don't have any kids)
-Magazine apps on ipad are much better laid out and more fluid than magazines on nookcolor (ie. car and driver). Also it's currently free on ipad whereas nookcolor requires subscription
-In general, better selection of apps for ipad than nook (nook doesn't have apps and lack of scalable andoird apps for big screens really shows). Ipad has been out for a while and hopefully with the numerous tablet sized android devices flooding the market will rectify this issue
Here is one thing that nookcolor really outshines ipad.
multitasking, multitasking, multitasking
When the apps are parked in the task manager, most apps will restart when you try to access them again. I've also experienced issues with resource management on ipad trying to open PDF documents (1~2MBs in size) even when i had less than five app running (or inactively running) in task manager.
Overall i'm enjoying the form factor of nookcolor for everyday usage and hope that 2.2/2.3 release will bring some more performance to the device. Device isn't slow by any mean and nook ui may deceive consumers as being sluggish but rooted and running adw for launcher makes the device fly.
Okay so playing video kind of sucks and the youtube app doesn't play hd. Just a thought
Sent from my nook color using XDA App
As far as the screen goes, it is better than the ipad for viewing. From my understanding there are 3 layers to the screen to give it good viewing angles and better viewing for reading. The resolution is also great, similar to ipad but on a smaller screen and better pixel density. Better than the Galaxy Tab resolution.
I have a matte screen protector on mine that I purchased from ebay and it makes the screen really smooth and not the sticky feel you get from stock screen. Although, I heard that it does smooth out over time.
Multitasking is great on the NC compared to Ipad and probably due to the 512 vs 256 ram on the memory. The ipad is slicker looking but you also pay more. Speed wise, all we need is a custom kernel and I am sure we can get this thing 1 or 1.2ghz. And the custom ROM with optimization will make this a lot more fluid.
I love the portability with 7" screen and it is heavier than Galaxy tab but feels sturdier.

The NOOK and the Galaxy Tab has the same screen resolution, I have both if them. However the Tab seems to scale its interface making every app slightly larger, making them have less usable space. I prefere the NOOKs unscaled interface.

Tacky Screen
For those complaining about the screen being tacky, I noticed that myself initially (compared to my Droid X). However, it now no longer seems tacky, so either my fingers have worn off from playing with it LOL, or it comes with some sort of initial coating that wears off with use.

Watch the 7" comment, which I totally agree with, as you'll have 10" mavens swoop in claiming that 10" is better for video(yeah right), and another smaller subset claiming that 10" is better for reading some technical documents. I've never had a problem with video watching on 7" nor with tech doc reading on a 7".
YouTube: best experience that I've had with video playback on Android devices so far has been with the lowly Augen GT78 sporting a Telechips TCC8902 ARM11 CPU which apparently had an AWESOMELY superior hw video codec support to just about ANY other ARM SoC available, although Tegra 2 doesn't seem to be doing so badly, yet could apparently, use some further driver updates to better support it's video playback capabilities.
Beyond that, yep basic Android UI is pretty "rough" for Tablets, and is why I presume that many manufacturers attempt to slap on a custom UI of some sort although they haven't had much luck so far(I'm looking at you TapnCrap) beyond specialized book reader front ends, e.g. Nook Color, Pandigital Novel, and Cruz Reader.
All this said I still haven't gotten around to picking up a NC yet, as I'm still kind of waiting to see what pops up next year, but may break down next week and just buy one as the gTab(10") is a bit much for comfortable portability and use as a reader... plus the NC has a WAY better screen from what I could tell playing around with a demo unit at B&N the other week...

Other thing to note about ipad is the aspect ratio
I'm so used to seeing widescreen ratio on both tv and pc that when i was watching hulu on ipad, it was somewhat akward
I have to agree with many points of this discussion. I went from an ipad to a rooted NC and am very happy.
1. Love the size, Ive always felt the ipad was too big. I sure ipad 2 will be smaller.
2. I connect alot easier to public wifi, especially when there is a sign in screen. My ipad always had trouble with those.
3. Screen is nice, but sometimes a little too sensitive I think. Opens apps when scrolling through them for example.
4. Love using Google services, Google Talk, Gmail, and live wallpaper. And get latest Google Maps and navigation. Apple always tried to lock them out.
My wishes.
1. Froyo to enable beach live wallpaper. Coming soon, I hope...
2. Microphone. Can one be added on via 3.5mm jack? Would love to make sip calls, but no dice so far.
3. Static wifi, that doesnt sleep. Or at least the option to turn it on and off.

i agree with most observations comparing an iPad to NC.
I have both right now, and I definitely think when compared to iOS Android lacks polish and is behind in terms of apps.

For the most part the apps are almost the same for what I do. Apple just really has a nice way of dummy proofing products with the exception of flash everything works right out the box.

Speed?

So, how does this thing compare to an iPad and iPad 2 in speed?
While the GTablet, has better specs for about $50 more... The one area Viewsonic cut corners on is the one area IMO- you shouldn't: the screen.
So the closest things are the iPad and iPad 2.
Now, I recognize, this is 50% the cost of the iPad 2. I was just wondering how it COMPARES IN SPEED to the iPad 2 or GTablet????
The closest relative is probably the original iPad. How does it compare to that? For $50 more, I could get the original iPad. I didn't know if it was worth the extra $50 or not.
Its hard to compare speeds due to them being different OSes. An iPad is smoother, but I think my Nook is more versatile.
I would put the Nook Color a bit ahead of the original iPad.
I think their processors are roughly equivalent, but the Nook Color has twice the RAM of the original iPad - 512 instead of 256MB
The iPad offers a great out-of-box experience. Its OS has hardware graphics acceleration, so it feels smoother when swiping and stuff.
The Nook gives you the ability to customize everything. And Flash. Flash will probably never come to any iPads.
All true.
The Asus Eee Pad looks promising, too. Better specs, $400. Worth $150 more, I dunno. Definitely a better deal than the iPad but cost/benefit ratio...... I dunno.
The $250 price tag (was on sale for $200 via B&N few weeks back) MORE than justifies buying the NC than the ipad, especially with the development community Android has...
sorry, I never replied to the original question...the iPad has a little smoother transitions when swiping screens etc, but IMO everything else is just as fast if not faster on the NC.

Our familiy has an iPad, Gtablet (tnt 4.2.5) and a NC stock rom 1.1.0 rooted with Autonooter 3.0
The iPad is by far the fastest and smoothest in terms of response to scrolling, etc... No problems as long as you can live with the apps from apple. No software maintenance issues.
As OP pointed out, the Gtablet (available from $300 now) has a poor display. However if you hold the tablet at a normal viewing angle, there's no problem. Has flash, no wifi issues, runs froyo. Battery life ~8 hours.
The NC as I have it configured is good if you want a 7" device. It does have wifi issues. I have kept it at stock in order to use it as a book reader with the stock app. Speed is noticeably slower than the Gtablet.
When I am flying, I take my NC. When going to work with my backpack. I take my Gtablet.
stock rooted eclair with O/c is pretty fast. who cares about the MaxiPad?
the nook is way more versatile.
for sure swiping etc. is more smoother on ipads. ipad 2 is also faster. however having in mind form factor, price & os system i went for nook color. now, with cm7 on board i do not regret decision at all. depends really what u like
Well obviously I expected the iPad to be smoother...
Just like Android vs iOS... iOS is smoother but in all honesty- it's just an illusion of faster speed due to the transitional effects. It smooths them over verses Android clunking by- speed is the same though. (assuming hardware is the same).
I was talking about the actual speed though. Time to launch a webpage, app, menus, etc... Is the NC roughly equivalent to the iPad 1 in these areas? It appears so from the responses?
How does the NC/iPad 1 compare to the GTablet/iPad 2? Is dual core significantly faster? (I have yet to use either a dual core tablet or phone- I don't know how much benefit dual core actually is to a device like this yet- web browsing only requires a certain amount of power).
To the poster with a GTablet, it was one I was looking at. However- for $100 more the Eee Pad has better specs and an IPS display... I think it's a no-brainer to wait out the Eee Pad once I go over the $300 mark.
I had a Nook Color with customized Nookie Froyo 6.8.5. No wifi issues and overclocked 1.1Ghz. Just last weekend, I used my friends iPad2 for about an hour. The iPad2 is smooth swiping and all, but when it came down to surfing the web, it is just a bid faster than the Nook. Keep in mind that last week my Nook was still running at 800mhz. On the iPad2, I surfed my usual websites such as techbargains, slickdeals, dpreview, xda, etc. I really felt good about the Nook as it was almost as fast while surfing the net. Yes, swipping from screen to screen to find apps is fast, but in surfing the net, the iPad2 was just a tad faster than the Nook. All in all, the Nook is just awesome what it offers for $250 and you convert it to a Nookie.
Oh, also Flash is a big thing for me which runs fine on the Nook. I couldn't get onto sites such as mysoju.com on the iPad2. What a shame.

I have an iPad 1 and a Nook Color w/ CM7 (stock kernal)..although it's technically my wife's. The iPad 1 is about the same as the Nook in terms of launching apps (equivalent apps). Launching a cross word puzzle on the Nook is faster than a 1GB 3D game on the iPad for obvious reasons. Web browsing is a lot faster on the iPad as well in terms of loading pages, scrolling, zooming, etc... The iPad also does 3D rendering magnitudes better (although I think that's more of a software issue at the moment).
The iPad 1 is also a lot smoother, but it looks like you don't care about that, and I don't really either. I.e. angry birds runs smooth on the Nook Color, but when you run it side by side with the iPad same stage and launch a bird at the same time, you can easily tell the iPad runs smoother.
A lot of posters are saying the iPad 1 is slower, but I'm thinking they aren't using the latest software released in March. In terms of speed, it goes Nook Color stock < iPad 1 (older software) < Nook Color (Froyo/GB rom) < iPad 1 (iOS 4.3.1). Note that this was me manually timing everything by launching and using apps at the same time. Benchmarks might show a different story.
I've got an up-to-date iPad 1st gen (iOS v4.3.1) and a Nook Color running Phiremod 5.3.
The iPad is much faster and smoother, especially when it comes to web browsing. Skyfire on the Nook Color is painful in comparison to running on the iPad. The only speed advantage I've seen is PDFs renders faster on Android QuickOffice vs. iOS Goodreader. Apple PDF render is garbage compared to Adobe Reader on Android.
The new Opera Mobile uses the GPU for web browsing, like mobile Safari does, so it is the first web browser for Android that really competes. With that said, I like it WAY better than my wife's iPad2 for browsing thanks to a better implementation of tabs. I run CM7 with a 1.1GHz overclock.
The main limitation of the Nook Color is the GPU. The GPU is weaker than the iPad 1 or any other major mainstream tablet (Samsung Galaxy, Xoom, Transformer, etc.). You can tell when it lags on intensive 3D games.
But otherwise its an amazingly responsive device once set up properly. I think it will win in its price category for at least another 6 months or so....
i don't see the ipads as being comparable. They are a different class of "toys". The nook is just the right size for my interests, if i wanted something larger i'd prefer a laptop or at least something with a physical keyboard.
Explain this to me about performance: I can install a game like pew pew that has a ton of things whipping around the screen at what appears to be a very smooth frame rate, but then just scrolling the application listing feels like 10 fps?!
I know this isn't the latest and greatest hardware but it is 800 Mhz. 800 Mhz back in the day was more than enough for something as trivial as scrolling a list of icons. Yes this is a mobile device, but still.
I'm not into low level development, but what is the issue exactly if not hardware? Android's OS? Are the icons vector images for scalability purposes but cause slow down due to redraw or something? If so, maybe they should be rasterized first.
It just seems that even on a lower end tablet such as this, smooth scrolling should be possible in most cases. Meaning at least menu's icons. I can understand complex webpages not smooth scrolling/zooming etc (well even then, you'd think 800mhz could do a better job if things were optimized more.) but the normal interface to the OS should be smooth.
Android does not use GPU based acceleration in its phone OS. That is why iOS feels smoother, as Apple has doen that since the beginning.
To get around this you need to use apps that DO use the GPU, such as Opera for web-browsing or Launcher Pro for your app drawer.
I just tried Opera and it seems a bit smoother I guess, but nothing dramatic.
I didn't know launcher pro uses acceleration.
You'd think by now it would be standardized to use gpu accel throughout the os.
Ok launcher pro is much more smooth!!
Is there a list of apps that use hardware acceleration?
I understand that android is on numerous devices but how come a launcher or a browser can do it on various hardware but the OS itself and most apps don't?
Is google trying to make hardware acceleration part of honeycomb?
Is there initiative to get this going in some mods like cyanogen?
I think the sluggish experience turns off a lot of new users when in fact the hardware is more capable than what it seems.

Pros and Cons nookcolor post yours here!

What's your pros and cons of the nookcolor? Post yours here
Pros. Cons.
Nice design. No camera
Slim. processor speed
Screen quality. Needs universalsal cable
Sent from my nookColor using xda premium
No camera
No GPS
No microphone
No strong bluetooth range
A little too wide
A little heavy
Hackable
Virtually unbrickable
uSD bootable
IPS screen
Pro: Good battery life.
Pro: No locked bootloader.
Con: B&N lack of meaningful developer support.
Con: Workarounds required to get some apps to work.
Some of these Pros and Cons posted are the same thing. That's like saying, Ferrari Enzo, pros and cons. Pros: wicked fast, handles great, looks amazing. Cons: only seats two, no towing package, limited ground clearance, poor gas mileage.
If your NC had GPS, faster processor, bigger screen, camera, 3G/4G radio, long-range bluetooth and all that stuff (just coming up with low-hanging fruit of "cons"), then it would lose the awesome battery life, compact size, low price, etc. It'd be an iPad!
Pros: awesome battery life, very stable, extremely hackable, excellent community developer support, very low price, and INCLUDES uSD SLOT
Cons: flawed audio output hardware design (requires external amp), lacking support for any microphone (even external/bluetooth)

Uhmm, I have an NC and not an iPad due to cost, but my coworkers have iPad 2 tabs. Battery life on those is actually amazing, so I wouldn't try to state the NC is superior to iPad on bat life. Granted, if using CM7 the "deep sleep" works better, but during actual performance of daily tasks? iPad stomps all over NC.
Why? Becuase to get the performance I demand, I have to OC to 1200Mhz and then the battery is totally Donkey!
PROS:
Amazing developer environment on XDA and CyanogenMod
It's got an IPS screen for under $200.00
Amazingly overclockable, 1200Mhz without volt mods.
Features built into device even though original vendor doesn't use or market these (namely BlueTooth).
Elegant design, used on NT as well because it's pretty fresh even today.
microSD slot that is primary boot device, enabling easy ROM replacements.
CONS:
Original vendor support tied to their own online store but lacking significant dev attraction.
BlueTooth range is much less than 10 "inches". (range does matter folks!)
Elegant case is also kinda fragile feeling, cracks abound around charging/usb port.
Touch features are not precision across the display, frequently multiple attempts required towards edge of display.
Any OC beyond 1000Mhz really drags down the battery during use. Gamers get about 2+ hours and need recharge.
512Mb RAM really limits future OS support, ICS CM9 works but you've gotta throttle RAM use by a significant amount to stay stable at this point.
Video HWA not working yet in CM9, works in CM7 but don't expect flawless 720P use on NetFlix (even using 100Mbps metro ethernet).
Pro's: Love my NC and wouldn't trade it for anything under $500 retail.
Con's: The charging solution is crap. It's like a company department designed the device and they farmed out how to power it to a bunch of temps.

I can say with authority, you are doing it wrong. The batt on my NC, even with overclocking, blows away any iPad. But bear in mind, iPad is a bigger device and has therefore room for a bigger battery.

You need to adjust the voltage settings, brightness, and governor settings in order to get max battery life.
I don't know what game you are playing, but I actually watched HD movies on my NC for 10 straight hours on one plane trip. I don't play games much but I am sure HD movies require similar CPU.
from my point of view, availability of nook color itself is a pro
there are no cons. worth every penny, especially at the time it was released.
Yes I agree, the nook is a pro

If this is correct then my own NC is the problem as I don't get anywhere that much use out of a full charge.
As for games I'm playing, currently it's Angry Bird's Space.
I've never had 10hrs screen-on straight so I can't say for sure but with deep sleep, my NC lasts 10 days and still has roughly 45% juice in the tank, with that rate, it will be 3 weeks when it's close to empty.

for those who came from a n4, worth it?

trying to decide between n4 and this phone. $300 vs $550 difference for me. I know n4 update rumored to release or at least announce at google IO.

I have both and it is a matter of preference. The One is a fine piece of Hardware if you can get one with no problems Sense 5 is nice and well done, great camera, and amazing sound. Nexus 4 you will have the most current software out there but a sub par camera IMHO. Both have good call quality reception etc etc. I like them both for different reasons it is just a matter of personal preference. Good luck with your decision just be sure to check your One over before you walk out of the store I am #3 but it seems good so far. First one was very excessive heat and major lag issues and the second one the volume rocker did not work. Just letting you know so if you make the decision you can know to check them out before you leave
thanks for the responses.
I bought a nexus 4 earlier this month and a one on Saturday. I am returning ng the n4 because hspa was just too slow for me. I came from a one x which I had set on h instead of lte was still faster at loading web pages. Even when I was using WiFi, I found my one x faster and locked on better. There are some aspects of the N4 I like but the one is pretty sweet. Happy I switched.

It's definitely better than the n4. Vanilla android is featureless, colorless, and boring and the one runs faster and smoother than the N4 and the software and hardware is miles better than the N4
thanks guys. after playing with demo units today, I'm gonna go with new n4 (hopefull released on the 15th). JUst not worth the $300 premium for me. I found out i like the stock android experience.
I ended up upgrading to the ONE, it's been only two days but I'm kind of leaning towards It not being worth the cost premium.
The colors are a bit nicer, and the screen autobright is brighter, but my eyes can't really tell the difference in clarity. I'll be switching back and forth and will update my post later.

I owned the Nexus 4 since Nov. Now I have the One Developer. I can honestly say the following:
PROS
1 - The One is noticeably faster
2 - Flash is there on stock browser
3 - GPS locks are lightning fast
4 - Screen is sharper, clearer, better color reproduction
5 - Camera is much better
6 - Battery life is better (after last update)
7 - Sound from speakers is incredible - blows away the Nexus
8 - Listening thru good headset the sound coming from the HTC again blows away the Nexus (Beats)
9 - 64 gb storage vs 16 max on the Nexus
10 - Voice quality on normal calls is crystal clear
11 - Build quality much better
CONS
1 - No wireless charging
2 - No Google Wallet
3 - Nexus 4 will always get the updates first

let me know how the comparison between HTC One and Nexus 4 goes as I'm in the same situation. I currently use the N4 and been tempted to buy the HTC One but what has stopped me so far is the Sense UI and the quality of the camera (for a phone of this price).

quality of the camera is best .. its better than the iPhone 5 , Nexus 4' camera stands nowhere infront of htc one's camera. Hardware wise s4 pro vs snapdragon 600= huge difference . And Sense UI is way better than stock android ui atleast for me and dozen of folks around . Samsung GS4 is rubbish build quality sucks infront of the all metal one , ONE feels way better in hand ( both are of same price approx.) SGS4 camera has tough competition from our 4 ultrapixel cam .. You are wrong about the sense ui and quality of the cam ITS the one of the best out here on mobile (probs on no.1)
I'm not bothered about comparisons between the HTC One and Galaxy S4. I had the Galaxy Nexus and the AMOLED screen is not my preference. I do however, have a preference towards Stock UI. I have been using Nexus phones since Nexus One. The camera is only an issue if i decide to flash CM on the HTC One which means that the AOSP rom will not be able to process the photos in the same way, resulting in bad quality photos.
Depends on what you want from your phone and what style suits you, both of those phones can perform really well, so it really comes down to what you like the look of and what pros and cons can sway you as an individual.
For me the One is the better phone, without sounding biased.
Plus with cyanogen mod team doing their thing it won't be long until we have a fully fledged working vanilla style rom.

tmobile 1.27 here. 1.29 is supposed to improve things like camera, and the capacitive buttons. Both phones stock. i've used my nexus 4 for ~12days and my one for 3 days so far on tmobile. If the camera was clearly better or I needed the wifi calling or LTE, it would be worth the $230 premium to me easily. If you ave the option of a subsidized phone, then I would buy an S4 > resell, then buy the phone you want.
with tmobile, I haven't needed wifi calling yet, data speeds are plenty fast without lte (and we don't have it yet). The camera difference discussed in more detail here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41717762#post41717762
what's important nexus 4 vs one for me.
NEXUS 4 PROS
-noticeably faster in 8 tracks and tapatalk. (especially when scrolling, the one jitters a lot more) [turn taptalk posts/page to 50]
see discussion here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41719714#post41719714
update After enabling 2d gfx acceleration. The one is now a lot faster scrolling in 8 tracks. the N4 is slighly faster scroller in tapatalk. Giving the edge to ONE here now.
-camera is better outdoors. haven't done enough indoor testing to know yet.
-one gets hotter while using away from wifi
-less bezel, and much better screen to front face ratio. part of this is the physical buttons and front
speakers
-*major the n4 keyboard is much better. the one keyboard lags when switching to number mode and back. Also, during intensive applications the ONE keyboard lags even when typing letters. more noticeable when swyping. Swype on n4 is also better.
-the OS is more intuitive.
-power controls accessible from the the slide down menu.
-one has overly fragile camera cover plastic from reports here
-gallery app much better. I can share via gmail app and google plus directly and easily. on the one, you have to open up gmail app, then hit attach > find your folder.
-you can browse all your google cloud uploaded photoS on the gallery app.
-*minor n4 has google wallet (i use rarely)
-naked, the n4 is more comfortable in my hands.
BUTTONS
-htc one has physcial buttons, but the menu button is onscreen for much of the phone use. it's a waste of
screen space. the n4 has all on screen buttons. 100% on screen >> 40% on screen + 60% off screen buttons.
-at the botton of the front face, the htc has a speaker, capacitive buttons, and onscreen menu button. a
big chunk of space I consider not well spent. n4 has much less wasted space
-htc one capacitive buttons are less ergonomic for me to hit, because of this the phone feels less
ergonomic.
-on n4 screen buttons. I thought I would hate them, but I found out I love them.
*major visual feedback when a button is pressed. with the one, sometimes I miss the home button, and have
to press multiple times. (supposed to be improved with 1.29 update). this never happens with the n4.
every button lets you know when it's pressed. you know when you missed, and when the phone is just lagging.
*back, home, multitask, and menu buttons on in the same easy to find place.
*buttons change dynamically. if the back buttons minimizes the keyboard, it changes it's shape to be clear
It displays a menu button only when and if there is a menu option
ONE PROS
-*major screen has better colors,
-screen better clarity
-*major screen is brighter under auto bright
-*major battery life is supposed to be better, haven't had long enough to really evaluate
-*major 32gb vs 16gb on the n4 model. it's a major to me.
-IR remote is really cool. I don't know how much I'll use it though. Hopefully they come out with some 3rd party universal programmable remote software. If so, this will turn in to a *MAJOR.
-phone looks sleak, metal construction
-phone is louder, sounds better
-phone vibrate is very strong
-tmobile wifi calling + lte
-*major camera is better low light shooter, and quicker to focus
neutral
-the n4 is slightly wider screen aspect ratio. fits slightly more horizontal text reading. The one has more vertical space, more vertical text (at least when you don't have that pesky menu bar)
-gps locks plenty fast on both devices
-one phone feels denser
