From ICS to JB - any advantages? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just wondering what the experience has been for people who switched from ICS to JB. Are there any advantages in terms of battery life, stability and/or performance?
Thanks in advance.

I'm using TAJB rom from last 1 month, it is daily driver with very minor issues and 100% faster smoother than any ICS rom.
I can say JB is real matured OS of android.
For example, Max Payne game
On ICS it strucks very much, and need to wait almost 5 mins to load the game. I know saving the game also an issue.
On JB, it is smoother and loading became very faster and never strucked. i tried very hard to struck it intentionally but failed every time.
Regards,
Praveen.

I understood that there is a better performance, but is there stability for every day use and not only? I mean, is there an JB ROM with the perfect stability of a stock ROM for SGS?

There is no perfectly stable JB roms atm as they are all still in alpha/beta.
Elite's recent beta 9 is apparently a very good improvement over beta 8, some are even claiming that it's currently better than his very good ICS rom.

What do you believe, could JB get more improved for SGS than ICS? I mean, all of the ICS rom's that the developer said that are stable, failed at some point. Every ICS ROM that I had on my phone, had a critical point in time where all of the apps and system apps had permanent FCs so I'm looking in the close future for a ROM that it isn't stable for an "determined" period of time... I know that it's not necessarily to get better stability while having better performance, but I hope that there is a better chance in improving our SGSs with JB.

The FCs you got is probably because your /datadata partition got full. Install the Datafix app from the Play Store and clear your cache every now and and it shouldn't happen again.
I've used Elite's ICS rom since beta 10.1 and it's been stable as a rock for me. I'm sure his JB rom is just as good.

Hey guys, I am still using an odexed version of GB, it is very fast and stable but does the memory improve in ICS or JB, the problem with the sgs as you know is the memory I just want to know if ICS or JB use less memory then GB.
do you recommend to change?

For me battery life was a bit better on JB, depends really on the kernal you use though,
with performance, depends on the ROM you are using, for example i found that some roms where slow, and had poor battery life, while others were extremely fast and had good battery life.
Im currently using X-bean 1.0 and i am very happy with it

Hmmm...
I tried several JB roms and in my feelings JB boot much longer, maybe something is wrong with my phone ? :crying:

The current best one is X-Bean. I've tried all of them and X-Bean is by far the most usable rom that is available currently, with SlimBean + DevilKernal combo coming in second.

In my experience, boot times vary from rom to rom even within the same android version, with lighter roms having shorter boot times.

Same here, I'm using X-Bean and since now the fastest and most stable JB ROM (I used all JB's on XDA). I'm using Devils kernel and in normal usage - 1,5 day. Best battery of course on GB, but this is a small cost for performance

[Q] What ROM for ICS / i9000?

Hi,
which ROM can you recommend? I'm on DarkyRom 10.4.2 and want to change to ICS.
Is there any ROM contains tun.ko module for using openvpn or anyconnect? I can't find any information about this.
Hey,
There are so many ICS roms you can try from, we've really got great developers for our device.
My current favorite is ICS333:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1618757
It's really stable and everything works!! There's even a guide to install it on the general section.. Here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1637966
tun modules are supported by the kernel. ICS333 comes with semaphore kernel by default, which supports tun modules.. You could check and ask more on the ics semaphore thread in the development section..
For me there are only a few good ICS Roms.
The best ist Dark Knight 3.
But if you want a really stable and fast System, don`t take an ICS Rom. Take a jvt, jvr or jvz custom rom. My favorite is Tornado.
Thanks for you answer.
I've looked at many ROMS but the decision is difficult. My favorite after reading the different thread is SLIM ICS. But I'll now have a look at ICS333.
Should I use nandroid to make a backup before trying any ROM?

Hey, try the roms you like and choose the one you like the most!
Yeah, making a nandroid backup would be a good idea. Although don't restore your GB Titanium backup on ICS, it will create issues.
Cheers!!

Sadly yes.. There's no other way that i know of.. else you'll have FCs on every app..
You should EVER install without settings if you change your base!
Try ICS out. I tested several ICS Roms but for me ICS on Galaxy1 is only to see, what is ICS.
I`m back to GB with Galaxy1, Galaxy Note and Iconia A500.

What are your reasons to go back? Was it not stable enough, or battery drain?
For now the CM9 nighltlies are working fine for me no issue.the battery is also fine runs for around 12-15 hours moderate to high use with semaphore kernel 1.1.1s.i tried a DOCMaster's rom also it also great...SLIM ICS is also good but if you are new to flashing you will have some difficulties in it since the dpi is 182 in it and some market apps wont be compatible.Onecosmic was great but since there is no new development i wont recommend it.For now CM9 with Semaphore kernel.Waiting for Gamerzrom with ICS

Exactly what i tought about ICS, until i gave TWICS a try.
I'm on TWICS 2.5, its fast, Battery fine (like Stock JVT) , no FCs., no Lags (after switching from TW4 to Apex launcher).
I use my phone mostly for calls,SMS and a little Tapatalk, no Facebook.
Don't get Faceunlock working, maybe a Face problem *g*, i don't care.
Thats my experience, other user reports some problems with Battery life, check the TWICS-Thread.

Hi!
With ALL ICS Roms on all devices i got a worse Benchscore on QS, Antutu, CF Bench and Vellamo. The "feeling" is even slower too. ALL Roms are buggy. Nice to see what is ICS and nice for flashaholics like me, but nothing for stable daily use. DK 3 is ok- no battery drain- but bugs too. The DK 4 and 5 is poor and DK 5.5 ok but slower than 3 and GB.

You seriously have no idea what you're talking about.
ICS is perfectly suitable for daily use on your phone. Not only is it smoother than GB, it looks better. And there aren't really any bugs. None that you'll see with normal use. It's perfectly stable.
Pick a ROM, any ROM. SlimICS is great; Dark Knight seems popular; CM9 and AOKP work wonders. Take your pick and never look back to the past that was Gingerbread.
I think CM9 is the best. I definitely recommend ICS as it has hardware acceleration and is sooo fast!
There's nothing like ICS isn't stable.. There are loads of roms to choose from.. I'm on ICS 333 for a week now and i haven't faced any bugs, lag or fc..
Everyone has their own views.. I think the best option is to try it out on your own n make your choice.. If you like ICS, great! If not, you can always switch back using a nandroid backup..
Enjoy!!

Doesn't matter, just flash Semaphore. It does. And it's one of the top ICS kernels.
The original release of Samsung Galaxy S [GT-I9000] has come a long way and still powerful enough to accommodate the latest Android release - Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.x.
Read my article here:
https://www.fixmystuff.in/FMS_Forum...dwich-4-0-x-for-samsung-galaxy-s-gt-i9000.83/
Sorry, but not my view to ICS.
Since today I got the official german ICS for Galaxy Note and now i know, WHY there is no really good ICS Custom Rom for any device!
ICS is the future? LOL
Only on 5 percent of android devices, months later as planned and in a few month jellybean release.
I suggest Elite GTi9000_IMM76K_RC_1.2

Fastest ROM with best battery life

Hi guys,
So... I've tried a few ROMs on my note... currently on CM10 preview 3. I'm asking as above what is the best ICS or above ROM (fastest) which also has good battery life?...
Or.... what are the best settings to use on CM10 p3 for fastest yet good battery life? I've seen that NoteCore ROM... is that good?
Thanks.

Actually I have discovered this ROM yesterday and I am using it for a 2 days. Excellent.
But I have a question, should I stay with current v8 kernel or it is ok to move to v11.
I am not sure if I am going to ruin my battery life and performance.
Thanks in advance
I have tried em all and have found a winning rom:
[ROM][ICS][01-08-12][0.8] AniDroid-N7000 (CM9 | 3.0.38 | SLQB | OC)
Using that rom with its stock kernel I am getting very nice performance and battery life!! 3G+ data+sync on (WIFI and the rest disabled) I am getting 1% an hour drain! I am tempted to try a CM10 but I would only be doing so 'to have the latest' whilst not necessarily being 'the greatest'. I do get itchy though but will probably await for the Project Butter to be working and then I'll switch.

Interesting, thanks for the info! Going to read more about both of these and try them out!
Does anyone know of a way of removing Navigation bar (softkeys) from AniDroid?... pretty pointless as I have hardware buttons....
Fusion Rom v3.0 with its stock kernel really impressed me.
Rocket Rom too.
The first has more battery But a bit buggy to me.

I'm on Cleannote v4 and Notecore v11... the performance is great and I think the battery life is very good, and think most on both would agree.
If you don't like touchwiz, basic ROMs, then this may not be the right combination for you... but I find it clean, smooth, and efficient. I don't care about all the extras, just want a phone that works and runs my apps dependably and quickly.
Give v11 a try. Just do a nandroid first and you can always flash back if you don't like it for some reason (I can't think of any reason).

I would recommend to stick with it if you are not facing any issues.
Since you want to upgrade Use only Standard version. OC versions drains battery pretty fast.

[Q] Most stable and fast current ROM

Yes, I know that this subject has been beaten to death, but ONE more time:
Can anyone recommend a STABLE and FAST ROM for Galaxy Note?
I am totally disappointed with the JB stock ROMs in terms of speed. I've also been trying CM9 and CM10 at various stages, byt IMO CM is nowadays buggy as hell... gone are the good old days when Cyanogen was still in charge(?)
I tried PA some time ago, but it was a bit buggy too. I'm a bit curious about it however... maybe it's more stable now? I'd also prefer decent support for the stylus.
Alliance ROM maybe..but in terms of this questions!!people's mind are not identical . this is like asking which girl is the Best one for a permanent
girlfriend!!!be a man .go out there and explore the ROMs and from there u might be able to see for urself ^

Totally interested too!
I'm now on latest MIUI however my wife's Iphone 4S is still faster, smoother and stable...
And those who tell 'go and try' - i've already tried 4 custom roms and 3 custom kernels and i'm sick and tired of restoring data every time after those tries.
So if you can really suggest a good, fast and stable custom rom for daily use - please do.

Sorry, dude, was even unable to install this ROM - tried twice but no luck.
Setup started normally 2 times and then quit suddenly - kicked out of CWM.
It's so weird that they have the only option of ROM install via ROM Customizer (no CWM zip support).
Ended up with clean install of the Ultimate JB v5.2 ROM - will try and see how it goes.

excellent selection of quality ROMs for you to try, depending on your preference / needs. there are no bad or "buggy" ROMs imho, it's just a matter of personal preference. CM10.1 with Dynamic screen mode, forced GPU and all animations switched off is perfect for me. But that's only my opinion

Yes buddy it is.. you get a lot of fluidity...
a performance boost too..
if you want I am providing you the link where you can update your note.. the full procedure..
http://techtactics-by-rbhk.blogspot.in/ use this blog..

Thanks
I reply not only because of naming my XXLT6.
XXLT6 is removed from my list of Roms, so you will not find it (it only made problems for me and other members).
And if you want to try to upgrade to JB you are at the right place here in XDA - no need to switch to other websites.
Use Dr. Ketan's standard thread for updating your Rom with one of the available JB stock Roms.
Or switch to a Custom Rom of the "color and taste" you like. Look in to the two development forums here and always follow the installation instruction of the specific Rom.
You'll get some nice features with JB (many of them I personally do not use).
But: I'm not convinced that you get increased performance with JB, I still think GB is the one to choose.
But 2: you have to check and compare this yourself.
But 3: I do not talk about battery life. My only answer to a reduced time of battery life is always: buy a new one.
If your device is too slow you could also try with a factory reset in GB and start with a clean device (after saving all your important data).
Well thank you very much.. i'm looking for the Fastest ROM for Gaming, f**k the colours, i'd rather play Windows 2000 with GTX titan card, rather than windows 8 with bad graphic card. I hope you get my point
So, any suggestions which ROM has the fastest performance?

Trust me , ICS is even bettter than GB ...
JB is good , but battery drains like a heck and got some random reboots , so i highly recommend an ICS rom.
Pros of ICS:
-Solid as hell with good battery
-Smooth
-Fast
-A lot of Jelly Bean apks and mods can also be used on ICS
Cons of ICS:
-Development has mostly stopped (except kevinrus )
-Lack of features compared to Jelly Bean (which some people don't like)
Pros of Jelly Bean:
-HW acceleration (which tends to be hit and miss on our device sometimes)
-Built in features such as Expandable notifications, lockscreen widgets etc
-Extra features such as Halo and in general more customiseable ability
-Latest and greatest
Cons of Jelly Bean:
-HW acceleration really does take its toll on a single core device with only so much ram
-Because builds are released daily they aren't always stable and may have bugs
-Increased battery consumption naturally
4.3 builds are a lot better than 4.2 builds though, despite being in early stages, the few builds of CM10.2 I've tried were excellent

As far as I know/heard, not too many people are having random reboots of things.
Aways released an unofficial SuperNexus 3.0 which might interest you

I agree with @Soryuu that 4.3/CM10.2 is a huge improvement compared to all 4.2 ROMs, it's faster and gives double battery life. Check my new thread posted this afternoon, I posted guide how to cleanly upgrade and have bug-free working CM10.2
It is that good that I've flashed Semaphore 3.1.0s kernel and won't upgrade anymore, good enough for me

I hope it will work for you, it is bug-free in my i9000:

If it doesn't, read my new thread that I've posted just yesteday.
I've been posting those information for clean, bug-free downgrade/upgrade from CM and unbricking to many i9000 users and it seem to work that way.
