Wanna buy but afraid - Nexus 7 General

The N7 isnt being sold in my country, so some friends will be visiting the USA this month and i want them to buy me one. The thing is, after reading about some of the problems the device has, and people returning it 3-4-5 times, im afraid im gonna get a defective device and then im screwed cuz i wont have any store to go and replace it.

My Nexus7 has no problems at all and I love it. Its well worth the price I paid for the 16GB.

I'm from India and I'm also afraid about product quality. Here getting 8GB model for $250. I want to know, is nexus 7 supports USB on the go feature so that I can use pen drive for external storage? and what are cons you guys faced with your nexus 7 yet?

Guys, don't step out in the road, you have more chance of getting hit by a bus than you have of getting a bad N7!
The N7 works with all kinds of external storage but you need to root it first, there's good instructions on what to do on these forums when you need them.
/edit, just had a thought, those might not be very good odds in India

As someone who has received three units with screen lifting, I wouldn't caution you as strongly as you might expect me to.
That's the only really common defect, and in most cases it is not severe enough to affect usage. The last two I received have been minor cases of separation. The reason I won't accept this flaw is because of the possibility that it will worsen over time, but keep in mind that this is speculative.
My experience with the device has been overwhelmingly positive aside from this, and if the Nexus 7 is right for you then it may be worth purchasing even if you do get one with the kind of separation I've been dealing with. Although the warranty friendly fixes have been found to be temporary, if it bothers you that much then good old fashioned super glue will do the trick. Many who have gone through multiple returns have decided that they like the tablet enough to dispense with this RMA business and jimmy it down themselves.
Don't let anyone tell you that screen lifting is a rare thing, but it's not the end of the world. This is a great device even with the fault.

You can get your friend to check it for you and if its bad return it on the spot.

I'm new in this forum and know nothing about rooting, but I would love to root my nexus 7 if someone give me link to proper instructions.
And yea the price for 8GB Nexus 7 is best anyone can get in India right now. On ebay india it costs approx 320$ for 8GB N7.
So buying N7 8GB for 8GB is a great deal for me.

Is there any chance that by now there is an already free defects batch rolling out?
I remember when the HTC Sensation came out it had also multiple issues. I bought mine about 5 months later and had no issues at all. I cant do it here because either i buy it this month or i wont buy it at all

:bump:

@Dr. Sheldon take a look at the android development sub-section in the Nexus 7 forum. There are several methods of rooting the device, most of them requires little interactions with the device.
Also, the ones who have had defects are among the thousands who haven't encountered any problems, so your odds should be pretty good. Best luck to you mate.

Don't be afraid, that's what Apple want to to feel. That's where this whole myth of Nexus7 problems originate from...
The vast majority of Nexus7's are fine. You only hear about the ones with problems.. (or claimed problems. I suspect only 10% of those are genuine, the other 90% Apple viral marketing at work).

People here are saying there's a small amount of defective n7s but I'm on my third one. First 2 had dead pixels, and my current one has screen lift. Guess I have extremely bad luck

I got mine overseas and notice screen flickering and screen tear the first day.
I also cannot return it.
But I pop it open (easy enough) and tighten the screw, it seems to fix the screen tear.
Only notice the tear once yesterday after a whole week. And people on forum already has solution for flickering.
So I cannot settle if it is hardware or software related.
I think for the price of half an iPad, it is lighter and smaller.
So I can definitely deal with the small imperfection.
So go ahead and get it.

The very vocal minority here may have problems, but the majority (the 99% lol) have no issues. If there was a global issue, I'm sure you'd hear about it on NBC/Fox/CrApple News/etc. I have my Nexus, no issues and I love the thing. Great device and no regrets!

Hi Dr. Sheldon
I have hours worth of videos on the Nexus 7. Showing OTG functionality(mouse/keyboard, remotes, usb hubs, controllers, camera connection and control), how to root, comparison, NFC in action, streaming your desktop screen, and more. My youtube channel is down below in the signature. But these are my perspective. There are allot of great videos others are publishing showing all the good and bad from different viewpoint. As a developer and hobby android developer, this is a great device. This is a great forum and community that will really unlock allot of potential in the Nexus 7, the most interesting sub-forum in my opinion is the Nexus 7 Developer.
For rooting Nexus 7, this is a very comprehensive video that was put together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrZaU5i2x4w&hd=1
Best Regards

There is no such thing. There will always be a number of defective devices for various reasons when things are mass produced. The number of issues you are seeing in the forum is skewed as most people who have no issues, rarely use forums or post about their experiences.
I've now touched and used 5 brand new 16gb Nexus 7's out of the box and they were all fine. The first was in the first initial pre-launch batches with the latest being 3 days ago. I know that others have had issues but that is the experience that I've been seeing.

I got my 2nd one today and it has screen lift and burn in.
I'm getting a refund.

Galaxy Note N7000 16gb or Iphone 4S 64gb???

hello everyone. .
my dad has been using an iphone 4 32gb right from it's month of launch till date and finally he is getting a new phone.actually he is getting the phone of his choice for free as a gift and i wanted to know whether you guys think it's wiser to get the iPhone 4s 64gb since it's much more expensive at around 4100 Qatar riyals($1125) compared to the note 16gb which sells for 3000 Qatar riyals($823)at virgin and vodaphone stores..he has been using ios for over 2years now and he can still sell the 4s if he doesn't like it and get a better phone later..plus iPhone's don't come defective straight out of the box like the note..if i could trust Samsung's quality then i would never even consider the iphone!!! i really don't want dad to be in the same dilemma that i am currently in!!!
me and my mom both have note 16gb...mom purchased hers from india for 31000 rupees($600) at the month of launch and she also got a nokia touchscreen phone worth 4500 rupees($90) for free from the eBay promotion that was going on at the time.btw this is a brand new in sealed box phone and the cheap price is because Samsung prices its phones reasonably in India right from lauch and my dad purchased mine from doha at virgin mobile store for 3000 Qatar riyal ($823) and sent it over to me in India.. btw he got the money back for it though since it was also a gift from some company
my moms phone is manufactured in Korea and it does not have any problems except for the banding and clipping..on the other hand my phone is manufactured in Vietnam and right from opening the box i noticed many problems with
1)there is a very faint pink spot in the middle of the screen only visible in low brightness with a grey or white background..after i noticed it once it drives me mad while browsing or reading e-books
2)while using the S-pen it registers the touch when bringing it close to the screen..i don't have to touch the screen.when it's brought close even at 3cm it registers the touch.. the weird thing is that it occurs only when using the phone in specific positions like while lying on the bed or using the phone inverted
3)the battery life on my device sucks!!!! my mom gets over 1day of light usage on her device..but she makes around 4-5 hours of voice calls!! i always use my device heavily but 4-5 hours of backup its unacceptable!!!!
when i took the device to a local service center in India they said that i would have to pay money to get it fixed since its out of country purchase!!! WTF IT'S A FRIGGIN' $800 DEVICE AND ITS DEFECTIVE ON ARRIVAL AND SAMSUNG REFUSES TO PROVIDE SUPPORT!!!!
anyway I'm suffering for trusting Samsung and purchasing its device and I'm paying the price for putting my trust and money on a company with no quality control who sells defective devices
i was using an iPhone 4 32gb myself and i got it around the time of launch along with my dads phone and to be frank i haven't faced a single hardware problem till date and now i regret selling it off when i got the news that i was getting a note
i don't want my dad to be in the same situation that i am currently in and i think he should go for the 4s 64gb
what do you guys think???

Did you actually type all that from a Note? (your signature says so~)
Then show that to your dad on a desktop or a laptop, then he himself would buy a Note.

Definitely the Note.
- "old peoples" have "bad" eyesight and 5,3" will help much compared to 3,5".
- Note with S-Pen do a huge different.
- Both u and u mom already having the Notes and why not u dad too?
- See what u dad usually do with a cellphone and get the one that suits his needs.
Loan u Note to u dad, let him use it for few days and see what he got to say. Then get the one he is most satisfied with.
Best thing .. steal your dads phone and give him urs for 2 days, then give him back his iPhone..
You will see him immediatly asking for a Note as th gift
Note for sure.
So iphone too has problems. Alteast note has bigger screen and most important thing, its android
Android = from the people to the people by the people for the people.
ios = From apple to people.

HTC one X could also be a choice if Note is not at home ....
Used to own IP4 and IP4s and sold them even when jailbroke there not much you can do to it. Only gay theming and little tweaks other than that if you buy one Apple owns you they are so cheap to do hardware upgrades which they should have done after Iphone4. Note is way better than any iphone releases I will even pick S2 than iphone4 or 4s. Only reason I kept my iphone before is because of my free apps but the way I see it now Market is improving and seeing more apps and games available for download.

now now. my dad runs a few mobile phone shops in malaysia and i have used almost any mobile phone that was available in malaysia. to say that samsung is like a lottery doesnt sound right. honestly, buying every phone is like a lottery. we had customers who bought their phones for less than a week and come back with problems after problems after problems and you just cant help but feel sorry for them. when iphone 4s was first launched, my dad sold 2 straight to one of his friend. 2 weeks later, both screens werent working at all. some complained that the battery life was worse than 3gs some had no problems.
saying N8 is a tough phone hmm. i have dropped my iphone 3gs many times and no problem with mine either. one of the lucky customers accidentally dump his phone while holding in his hands onto his car and the whole screen was gone.
so far, i havent heard of any note with problems from customers. my dad is using note since the first batch and i just got mine yesterday. so far so good with no problem for mine and his. maybe yours was just one of the lucky ones? my dad is samsungs priority dealer so we get to have all the samsung mobile phones first hand and that means we sell the first batch too.
IMO, get what you think is best for him. let him try yours and see if he likes android or iOS. What we think is good may not be good for him. consider this, will he be able to port from iOS to android? does he just want a simple phone to just make calls and text just like the way he used to? or he wants something more.
i would go for note anyday too.
stability and usability: iphone 4s
functionality: note

No issues here.
99% of the noise is either people with WAY out of kilter expectations for a £160 tablet, or are simply Apple shills.
You also have to consider that on forums like this, you will only ever hear from people with problems. Nobody comes here to say things are running fine.
Every device has manufacturing issues for sure, but considering the high numbers of Nexus7 devices shipped, and the rock-bottom pricing, it's actually rather good. Although try telling gutter press reporters like The Register and Engadget this, they will stir up an old crap if it means website hits. Both sites have destroyed their credibility in recent years over desperate fanboy reporting.

Nope. Mine is flawless.
Another 100% perfect tablet here. This is my first tablet and I have to say that it is unbelievable, especially at this price point. I really think that both the hardware and software on this thing gives us a snapshot into the future of these devices.
I already want to integrate jellybean into some sort of home automation system. With Google Now the possibilities are very cool.

Via my HTC Rezound
After a few hours fine so far, touch wood.
No dead/stuck pixels.
No sign of screen lift, though I gather this may not be immediately evident.
Don't notice any ghosting.
Thought headphone socket was broken till I realised you need to push a bit harder than I'm used to on other devices to get them to click in place.
Only small glitch was while undergoing a lot of switching between different wifi options (testing speeds on home wifi, mobile tether blue tooth tether etc) settings force closed and sound stopped working till after reboot.
Free content is junk like I expected.

Why should someone seek out a defect they wouldn't ordinarily notice or care about? Yes, you can be a hypochondriac when it comes to electronics too. Realistically we all have "something wrong" with us at any given time, and the same thing can be said about your electronic device.
Each and every device (not just N7s) out there has some kind of "minor defect" (and by that I mean doesn't work precisely as the owner might expect). The point is, owner who aren't obsessed about having a "perfect" device don't run 20 different diagnostic apps to try to hunt down that "defect".
I'm not saying every person who complains about a defect is a hypochondriac, there are definitively a select few real issues out there just like their always have been and always will be with every electronic device. However, there are many many more people who will just never be pleased, like those who have had multiple RMAs.
I have had mine since the 17th, no problems yet.

Why is it that every time a new product comes out...

early adopters complain about issues and treat it like it a huge surprise?
You bought the first run on purpose. I have yet to see a piece of electronics that didn't have some kind of issue at launch. The iPhone 4, Galaxy S, G2...pretty much every piece of hardware I have followed the launch of has had issues at launch.
I've taken the stand that I am going to wait at least a month before I buy a new product. Usually longer. I also prefer to buy pre-owned so I can save money and also make sure the thing works.
So why all the surprise? Is it that people just like drama or are they really that ignorant?

+1 :good:
You make it sound like the only people that own the product are the ones here complaining. I'm willing to bet they are a small fraction of the owners. Besides, the true early adopters know that there will be issues, and quietly get them resolved without making a stink. My thoughts are the ones complaining are the ones that only follow the big tech announcements and see the next "must have" product and aren't true "early adopters".
tl;dr whining about whiners
Where do you expect a post on XDA like this to go? I would suggest you ask a mod to close this thread as it has no relevant value (other than starting flame wars).
So only threads complaining about problems unnecessarily are allowed?

I waited until recently to grab one and I still got a dud. Don't get me wrong, I loved my Nexus 7 and still highly recommend it to people. What burns me is when issues aren't fixed, which seems to be a growing trend with ASUS right now. If there's an issue and it's fixed, I'm as happy as a clam. Refusal to fix with a 170 dollar quote from ASUS to fix it? Now that's just bad.
So if I buy a car that's a first production run and it fails on my while driving it's to be expected? I don't think that's acceptable. But hey maybe I am just a crazy person who expects things to work.

But are you dropping 20 grand on a phone? I doubt it. Phones usually aren't used for more than a year or two before the owner decides to upgrade. A car is usually used 5-10+ years. You can't expect the quality control from a car to be the same or even close to the same as for a mobile device.
Now I agree, I also want things to work but no way will the company be able to iron out all the problems before release.
Its not that we expect products to be problem free, but they should be free of *major* problems and/or the mfg should fix these issues. That's not what I'm seeing with the latest Asus products though...

I agree. Plus your nexus 7 isn't going to kill you if something breaks or goes wrong. Cars are held to a different standard and are tested to make sure they are safe for people.

Seems like a reasonable thing to discuss in the general section. Your reply seems kind of rude.
I guess that, for me at least, I don't consider myself a beta tester. If I buy a product, be it first run or 10 years later, I expect it to work like it is supposed to work. Anything less is not acceptable in my view. If you charge me money for a product, then I demand/feel entitled/whatever to have that product live up to it's claims. Now, if you want me to be a beta tester for your product, by all means, you can give me a non-polished product...but then the product needs to be free and if you want more than complaints, be prepared to pay me an hourly rate for my time as well.
Luckily I seem to have incredible luck and I've only had one product be defective out of all the mobile devices I've owned.
Boohooo
With any rather is be a new car a cell phone or tablet.. or even a door knob.. You will here from 1 of maybe a few hundred that are totally satisfied.. When people have issues now days they head online. IF this were a car forum you would hear complaints .well maybe even about your car. that you might love and have no issues..
people witeh issues wanna hear from others with similar issues. If nothing more then to know they are not alone . When people ban together especially a place like here to let it be known there are MAJOR issues with a product the manufacture takes notice. YES even ASUS with there lack of ability to produce a good product . 4 Years ago i would have stood behind them. NO MORE well i just hope they get the act together before they get hit with many class action suits. There is a huge common problem with the nexus..
NO The problem is not performance or function . its BUILD QUALITY a crying shame on such a well thought out product. with very poor Quality testing
With all that said XDA in the general section under the correct device . Doing so respectfully is the CORRECT Place for these type of post.. Development is not just software its built and design quality. As we have seen several post about people fixing there own device .
As far as this tablet.. THERE should be a buffer space between the trim piece and the glass. Glass and plastic expands and contracts diffident This will likely cause alot of glass breaking in the future.. Mine broke 30 minutes after purchase in my hand with no drop no over exertion . Yes these issues are a exception to most peoples experience.. But they still happen to often..
my two Cents...
Many threads are there to report problems or see if others have the same problem to see if there is a common factor or fix, not always just to complain.
A topic complaining about complaining, I find it easier not to click on topics that do not appeal to me.......Or I just thought of a new topic to make

So your saying make a new thread about threads complaining about people who are are posting about issues with there Device CLEAVER.
NOT..!!!!!!!!!!!
People want to pay $100 bucks and have a complaint about everything that is wrong with something. It reminds me of those people who buy 40 inch Coby TV's and then complain and tell the world about how bad Coby is and why it sucks..

Upgrade or downgrade to Nexus 7 2013?

I love my original Nexus 7.. but it's finally starting to fall apart. I'm a super power user and take the thing everywhere and it's just beat to hell.
So here's the question.. upgrade to a new Nexus or buy another original nexus?
Lots of complaints on the new one out there.. rattle in the camera, bad touchscreen issues, more..
If you own both.. that's the comments I'd really like to hear. What do you think of one vs the other?
Facing the same dilemma, I have an opportunity to sell my N7 and get the 2nd generation.

I'm in the same boat - my original Nexus 7 was replaced after a month or so because of a screen fault. The replacement then suffered horrendous battery drain (~70% overnight when off!) after an Android update, so it also went back to Google. I replaced it with the 2013 model, which clearly had touch screen issues straight out of the box and random freezes, so back it went too, this time to Amazon who I bought it from - I'll never again buy anything from Google!.
In the month since it went back I've been considering what to do, and in all honesty I'm looking at avoiding Nexus 7's altogether, because of the problems and also because Google's customer service is simply the absolute worst I've ever encountered.
I have a large Amazon gift certificate balance which would cover the cost of the 2013 Nexus 7, but if I *was* to buy another Nexus 7 I think I'd go for the 2012 model and hope that the KitKat upgrade didn't cause any battery issues. Also by buying from Amazon there'll be no hassle if (when?) things go wrong.

I didn't have any issue with my google tablet. I bought my first one off of someone who had used it for about 6 months and I've used it every day at work and at home. Rooted, modded and ran like a champ. I put so many miles on it that it's starting to fall apart around itself. But I've loved everything about it. For the price I haven't used anything that even comes close. (IMO)
On paper the 2013 is closer to what I'm looking for.. but man are there are lot of complaints about it online.. definitely has me a bit nervous.

Well I suppose the safest thing would be to buy the 2013 model from Amazon, and if you have problems just return it for a refund. Any touch screen problems will show up before 30 days - mine showed up during the initial set-up process!
If you have to then nexus 7 2013 is your best bang for the buck.

Because of the touch screen issues (touches not registering or registering in a different place, phantom touches etc.) and frequent freezes. Google them.

I am sure the issues are not that wide spread, if you look closely at any electronic device the first batch is always not 100%. pick any device ull find problems. its like after software now devices are also in beta state so buy nexus 7 2013 and check if u find problem then replace and if the problem still exist then replace with some alternative. Remember the power u want is only available with nexus devices or els u cn always check galaxy tab and that will cost u more so basically wither u get the latest update with fairly powerful device with low price point or slow updates super power and less issues. choice is yours.

What an odd outlook. I've already had the Nexus 2013 which as I said was faulty straight out of the box. I am not alone in this as there are indeed *many* people having problems with it, and I won't be buying another as I'm not paying to be a beta tester.
You should check yours as you seem to be missing many letters
lol i am using 2012 version and yeah i am bad at typing and yes i am worse when it comes to touch screen keyboards but since you asked question in 2012 version nexus 7 thread u should expect a 2012 fan

I'm not keen on touch keyboards either, which is a slight problem with a tablet! Lol!
Are you using KitKat on your 2012 N7? I'm still tempted to buy another if KK's working ok on it. I read some reports that it broke 3G and disabled SMS apps in favour of Google's own (can't remember what it's called), but as I'd go for the WiFi only model these problems wouldn't matter to be. And besides, they're quite cheap now.

I just replaced my 12 N7 with a new 13 N7. Bought from Amazon. No issues yet. Used about a week so far. Much quicker/smoother than the 12 model IMO. For the money, its tough to beat.

Buy a Nexus 6 in 2017

Hello guys!
I hope everyone is going great here..
Ok, to the point, I'm looking to buy a 'new' phone and I was wondering if buying a Motorola Nexus 6 would be a good idea even after 3 years of its release.
Phone status: refurbished
Website: Aliexpress.com
Prince: ~$200 USD
Maybe anyone has bought one around this time and can guide me through this process, or if someone thinks I should look for another device please tell me.
Please have a great day, thanks guys!

I wonder if 'refurbished' means a new battery inside.
Probably not.
A good phone with a 3 year old battery.
For the price you mentioned, I would prefer a cheap phone with a new battery.

You should be able to find one alot cheaper then that on eBay or Amazon etc.
I find the Nexus 6 great for my use.
I generally have a bad feeling about refurbished items. I much prefer buying used things locally, directly from the previous owner.
And as mentioned, you'll have to replace the battery at some point. Mine is still reasonable, but 3 years are a lot for a battery.

I just upgraded from Hammerhead to Shamu a few months ago. I got a refurbished Nexus 6 on eBay for $200. The device I received was in great condition and I have had zero issues with it. The specs on the Nexus 6 are still good even with newer devices being released. The developer support for Shamu is still active and progressive. I would recommend this device to anyone who knows how to properly use a good phone.
Bought two N6 a year and three months ago, batteries are doing great. AMAZON prime.

It is still a great device. I have brought my N6 back from semi retirement and haven't skipped a beat. $200 is a decent price if the phone is in MINT condition and if it is 64GB. Check for screen burn. Also look at ebay. You might get a 64GB one for $165 or so. YMMV!
Its still very speedy and the display is very beautiful, doesn't feel like a 3 year old phone at all!

The only drawback I have seen is its only a 32bit phone. Watching a movie or youtube with speakers on each side is really good. I will definitely keep one as a spare.

Hope you enjoy it! Still loving mine. Had it since first day. Only time I ever did that ?

Bought ours off Amazon prime about a year and a half ago. They say because its so old...cannot sell as "new". Both had factory seals and had never been opened. Its been all good ever since. Its a tough little device.

Pros:
Great multimedia device
speakers
still quite speedy with the right ROM
rear camera does well in low light due to ois compared to cheaper phones
Cons:
Google's os updates are done
Developer interest is waning as everyone moves to 64bit architecture
Screen is not the best AMOLED but isn't bad either (whites are a problem)
the charging port destroys cables
Front camera is just plain horrendous (would matter if you are fan of selfish or whatever it's called )
The power button is wobbly on my refurbished unit
Rear camera has some serious noise issues
Found the dac incapable of handling my higher impedance sennheisers ( my 1+1 pumps out more volume)

The micro usb cables i've used with my nexus 6 start to loosen on the micro usb side i.e. The two pins that have spring action just get depressed and never return? I've used the same cable (identical both were part of the same package high quality steel braided yada yada yda) with my oneplus one and its still pristine. My friend with a nexus 6 also has this happening to his cables. Very minor problem charging and sync still fine. I just like to share even the little incoveniences. Probably not a very prevalent issue either.
Development of roms has definitely stalled these days thats a bigger problem.
