T-Mobile Note... Use ATT ROM/root? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note

So my buddy got a note from T-Mobile and I wanted to know, after viewing specs, won't the ATT roms and root methods work seamless since they seem to be the same exact phone?
We are not first time rooters or ROM users. But, how big of a risk would it be to try and use the ATT root method on T-Mobile Note?

My guess...strictly a mildly informed guess is, that is you rooted the phone, did a nandroid backup and flashed a rom, everything would work except data, as they have different radios.
Don't try it because I said so, try it in the name of science. LOL (actually, I wouldn't do it)

Well I flashed the t-mo rom onto my att note and it works. also the data works too as it was using another t-mo radio i flashed in there before the flashed the rom, so it should work. but who knows.

But are they not the same phone with different radios? I mean theoretically same buttons and hardware means same "id's" for those buttons in the ROM for ATT. Like how Keys on a keyboard have special numbering, etc. How all hardware buttons function, really.
So why would an ATT ROM and root brick the phone?

Actually, the T-mobile rom runs fine on the AT&T Note, but CM9/CM10 does not run on the T-Mobile Note. Theres a difference in the displays, it's all corrupted during boot and then it finally reboots into a loop. I almost got CM9 to boot, saw it updating apps, but then it crashed.
The hardware is different!

I think we can flash touch wiz based ROMs on our T-Mobile notes, can we not?

T-mobile Note Roms
I'm not about to try to flash a ATT ROM on my new phone. So...where is a place to find ROMS for the T-mobile Note? Anyone have any Ideas? I'm looking for the Newest Touch Wiz and S-Voice to put on my note. Any help would be welcomed.

Since this phone has only been out a week, you will have a little bit of a wait.

from what i've seen it is safe to flash ATT roms they just don't boot.
I flashed about 3 different roms from the i717 threads using twrp 2.2.1 and they all boot loop at the samsung logo.
restoring my t-mo backup worked fine. so there really is no danger, just a boot looping issue.

You need to flash the T-mobile boot.img to get other roms to work on the T879. Check the "Goodies" dev thread made an odin flashable tarball that you make it easy to get up and running.
May post a guide later.

What about the root method? Can I use the i717's root method for the T879?

I don't own a Galaxy Note, but I'm considering picking one up this week, and I was just taking a look at the forums for it. The first step toward getting a nice development section is going to be finding a user experienced in porting roms. I would say if someone doesn't start this in the next couple of weeks, maybe it would be beneficial to you guys to find someone who is good with porting, ask them for advice & possibly even start a bounty to get them a Tmo Note for rom porting purposes? My best guess at using Att roms would be replacing the boot IMG & being sure that your using the Tmo radio(I'm not sure if roms generally include a radio). If those things are correct you probably have a good chance of getting TW roms to boot. I would try it, but i wouldn't recommend it to others unless your experienced in recovering bricked devices, lol! Again, this is just a guess, as I've never ported anything. I'm sure you can find a thread here on XDA that explains the fundamentals of porting roms. If I end up purchasing one, I'm definitely going to give it a shot! I use a gs3 as my primary right now, and I'll just debating whether or not I want the Note, or just wait for the international Note 2 and wait patiently for the network refarming? The plus to the Tmo Note is that I do have an upgrade on one of my lines, so it would be considerably cheaper!
---------- Post added at 01:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:09 PM ----------
If there is anyone in the thread that also owns a gs3, I would like an opinion. Are you being bothered by performance of the Note because of the lesser hardware? I still have a Tmo Gs2 around here, & after the ics update things went downhill bad in the performance department. Even w/ custom Roms, I see lag & stuttering, & I'm wondering if this is the case w/ the Note? I don't expect it to match performance of the S4 chip set, I'm really just interested in the added functionality of the Spen, so long as performance is acceptable.

Anybody have any luck getting any of the AT&T Jellybean ROMs working on the T-mobile Note?

I also have the GSIII and as said above, the Note is a little slower but not much. I'm loving my Note and just looking for a good ROM to put on it which i'm sure will improve the speed. I also went to one of those cell phone stores that sells phones for multiple networks and got them to give me a full size SIM frame from where they used a cutter to make a micro SIM, and it works great as an adapter so I can still switch back to my GSIII with no problems.

You don't need an adapter if you're using your micro sim card on your Note. Just make sure it's align correctly and it should work. I had my sim card modified into a micro sim so I could use the iPhone 4. Still using that same sim card on my Note without an adapter.

GTab 8.9 4G LTE

First my apologies for posting in DEV but my question was ignored in the Q&A section and I really need to know the answer. I plan to pickup a 8.9 4G LTE today after work at the AT&T store and need to know if this current crop of custom roms is usable on this particular 8.9 model tablet? I was looking at it at the store and it said it was i99x or something and I don't see any of those numbers mentioned here in the forum for this device. Thanks in advance for your patience with the post here and for any info provided. Very cool device and much different than my Samsung InFuse phone running GB.

All I’ve seen is WiFi roms, no roms for 3G/LTE roms for GSM. It’s a SGH-I957 model. I’m still playing with the idea of getting one, since you get the Galaxy Skyrocket free too with a purchase. No root either yet for this thing …
I picked up a SR on launch day. 2 days ago I piked up this tab. They credited me the price of the SR towards the tab! sweet deal!.
That is why I decided to get the 8.9 Tab. I wanted a Skyrocket but I just got an Infuse a couple months back so I couldn't upgrade for the Skyrocket. So I figured I would get the Tab and Skyrocket and replace my Infuse with the SR. I have a client who is footing the bill and we are going to use one of the inactive corporate phones to do the swap with my phone or else it couldn't be done. I guess I will just get it anyway and wait till some development comes down the pike. It is a sweet form factor and I think I will enjoy it.
Infused with Android DNA
I would really love to be able to get root on my new 8.9 4g LTE Tablet. Is there any devs out there willing to take a look at it for me or am I left out in the cold?
This thing is ridiculously slow and laggy i sure hope someone develops for it or i am going to ditch it quick. My Skyrocket is so much more speedy than this tablet. I like it but it needs help bad.

I'm having the same issues. I just picked this up yesterday with the skyrocket deal. Coming from using a Motorola Xoom which has very little bloatware, I'm terribly disappointed with this tablet. I love the form factor, but it's slow as molasses. Hopefully someone with knowledge will take the time to find a solution and share it with those of us who have no idea what to do
Does it have lag/stuttering when scrolling homescreens in portrait?
It pretty much lags doing anything from opening apps to Widgets or sliding through the screens. I've also has it completely freeze several times and I've only had it over the weekend. The LTE version from AT&T has tons of bloatware.

Introduce yourself, by that, I mean your device!

Hello everyone,
I'm new here,
Starting this thread so that beginners and new users (like me) can know about what people have done with their monsters and what they are capable of!
Tell me about your favorite top 10 apps and must haves!
Reason for choosing Droid 3?
I'd also like to know if some serious droidians can provide links on how to achieve what they have!
Would also like if they can tell users like me what should be done with their Droid 3 if they just took it out of the box!
I have a Motorola Droid 3 Verizon [XT862 (its obvious but still)],
5.6.890.xt862.verizon.en.us (I think its stock rom, but I could be wrong)
Using it in India.
And thats all I know about it.
Its not even rooted.
My reason for choosing Droid 3:
I wanted something solid, which felt like a monster in my hand, not like the new phones being thin and light as a paper, I needed something heavy! The large screen, 8 mp cam, 16+16 Gb memory are just add-ons to the list,
the main reason being the 5 row physical keyboard. I did not find any other phone with k/b with such screen and cam. And Motorola is well known for being modded and customized!
Share anything and everything you can, it is always helpful to someone!
Tell us about different processes of flashing, about roms, latest updates and so on.
Very excited to hear from y'all!
Hope. to get some really interesting and helpful posts!
Don't forget to have fun while doing this and help as many people as you can
Thanks a lot.
Really?
Really guys,
no one?
I was hoping to get some really good feedback!
Kinda old phone! I got it because i wanted the original but went with the Droid Incredible for processor. So I saw the droid 3 and it looked just as good.
Phone is end of life. These discussions have been had many times before. People are waiting to upgrade to a better phone.

Droid Incredible?
Isn't it a cdma phone? With 1Ghz processor?
-------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, I see.
But buddy, this discussion is not only about the features of the phone but more about what can one do or should do if they just got it.
This phone is not available at the place I'm using it. Specs are incredible, except for the software update.
I do not see a single phone with a keyboard like this with such a screen over here.
Even though it is an old phone, I got it regardless of its lousy software update.
And therefore I wanted to know, what people are doing with their droid3 regarding software?
I wanted to know which rom are they using and what apps are must haves!
Thats all.
Thank you all for reading.
Rom toolbox, safestrap3, thats all i recommend for must have apps.
Run stock for a while, and then put on safestrap and see what roms you like.
You can also use the ubuntu install app in the market if you want a linux distribution, worked ok on my droid3.
If you like at&t or tmobile, use the radio hack to skip verizon.

Selling my Inspire buying a Vivid

yesterday someone made me an offer on my Inspire, so I decided to get summen new.
Was like why not seeing that the person actually seemed like they wanted to Inspire more than I did.
So decided to choose summen in the HTC line that was comparable in price.
So what are you guys feedback about the phone, did I make a good choice
NB I did say for way i can afford now.
thanks
G
I love my Vivid. It was pretty good out of the box but after Rooting and installing a ROM of your choice it makes it so much better. Improved battery life, faster speeds, and more options as far as tweaks. Personally, I'm using WCX's rom but there are plenty of others out there floating around that are great. All have positives and negatives just need to find the one that fits you. If you can snag a One X that would be better but the Vivid is just as good. We just don't have a fully functioning Jellybean Rom yet but I don't think we are missing much.
thanks man, what I will do is test it first then root it,. I'll give the WCX rom a try seeing that you were the first one to response and offer some advice.
I was looking at a One X but was $100 or so more than what I paid for the Vivid.
I've been reading some threads where persons were wondering if Vivid would get an official JB update, but from what I gather the roms for this phone would do great,
thanks
G
Just be careful and read a lot before you dive into installing roms. This phone is a little more complicated then some of the other more open phones like the SGS III or Nexus. If you need any help just ask on the board. Plenty of knowledgeable people here to help you from bricking your phone. I'm not trying to scare you but if you don't follow directions it could lead to issues. Again its not hard to root and install a rom but things have to be done in a certain order.
thanks man appreciate it
G
It's a good phone and I you loved your inspire and sense, you'll love the vivid. It's a great stock phone, kinda weak on the development side, but a few guys around here are looking to fix that pretty close to a fully working cm10. Until then, definitely unlock your bootloader and root and put wcx's rom on, it is the best out of box experience hands down. In a nutshell our stock ics rom is a bit quirky, buggy, and laggy at times and battery life flat out sucks. Wcx's rom focuses on fixing all that. It's not all that fancy but he gives you the firmware this phone should of had from the factory!

Got the vivid yesterday and so far so good. Running ICS very fast phone I must say, smooth operation.
I want to root it just wonderit if I should wait a while before doing so?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda app-developers app
Well I will warn you 2 things about rooting this phone. First is the locked bootloader. You can unlock it but it's going to wipe everything. Your internal sd will be fine but you're phone will appear to be straight out of the box, you'll have to install your apps again, you'll loose all game save data, and you'll have to reconfigure your home screen.
Secondly your warranty is effectively void. If you relock your bootloader it'll say "relocked" in your bootloader menu. Only way to make it say locked again is to s-off and the process requires removing a screw with a void sticker.
So do so at your own risk. Just thought I'd give you a head up
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for the heads up.
Your second point I don't mind much as I'm not in the US anyway therefore not using at&t or some provider like that.
I don't mind the reconfiguration as well. Is there anything major you can think about that might affect the phone in any negative way?
And how would you suggest I root it?
Thanks
G
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda app-developers app
Nah nothing major, it's hard to brick this thing. Only thing I know for sure that'll brick it is flashing radios. But as far as rooting its pretty straight forward. Also if it doesn't have ics on it, update it first. It been a while since I rooted but their is a whole tutorial on it.

sticking to att note 3

Ok so I purchased note 3 at full retail price from att without doing any research. I need custom rom for sure. So should return the att version and get the tmobile version and unlock or do I have some hope of a dev figuring it out. What would you guys have me do. Plz dont say endure master wayne.
I'd return the ATT version and buy the unlocked version
Is there any downside to this other than the voided warranty which is basic. Plz I need some more opinions on this topic any input will be much appreciated even if it is to return it completely and switch to walkie talkie.
If you need something now return it for the T Mobile, but it will void your warranty. The current AT&T root de la vega doesn't void your warranty because it doesn't trip the knox flag, but there are no custom roms. I would bet at some point we will be able to load safestrap with the root de la vega and be able to run custom roms without breaking the warranty on AT&T models, but safestrap is a little more limited than really flashing a ROM and it isn't done yet so there is no guarantee. If they do unlock the AT&T bootloader and we can do a real ROM flash, that will also probably void the warranty and will probably trip the knox flag .. but none of that is known for sure right now or if it will ever be done.
It really depends how fast you need to be able to flash it and how much your warranty matters to you.
I have faith. Where there is a will there is a way. There is too much of a demand for it. Either att will unlock it or the bounty will motivate a dev(s) to figure it out.

Because no one cared about that phone
Ya know I thought this same thing, but you can modify just about everything through Xposed/wanam you could with a custom rom (status bar icon colors, notification background trans, remove carrier label, battery icon, hold back to kill app, toggle background colors, toggle text colors and the list goes on and on. Even on power saving mode this hardware/phone blows the most modded to the max note 2 out of the water.
Well for starters don't title your thread like an 8 year old who is on fire, that's just rude.
Secondly, the "more opinions" that you desire are discussed over and over in vast depth and in a varitable cornucopia of considerations in nearly every thread on this forum. The pros and cons of tmo now - vs- att later is proposed to a nauseating degree. In other words, spend 30 minutes reading and you will get more than the few comments that you ask for.
Thirdly, decide concretely if what you want from your phone can only be achieved through a custom recovery and rom. There are, as previously stated, numerous ways to change a lot about this phone even with the locked bootloader, but you should seriously consider the strong possibility that it will never be unlocked.
And lastly, take a minute to research the cons of using a tmo note on the att network... There may be none, they may be vast.
Read, read, read.

Depends on how fast you need to be able to flash a custom ROM. (Though I don't really understand an absolute NEED to flash a custom ROM as opposed to just WANTING to flash one.) If you need it quickly, return it, eat the $35 restock fee and buy it unlocked.
Out of morbid curiosity, why do you NEED to put a custom ROM on this? As long as we have root you can do almost anything. Just my opinion.

I would say eventually there will be a custom ROM and boot loader unlock however not today or tomorrow these things take time. If you dont have patiencr, aren't willing to out money toward developers to build , or do some developing yourself maybe iPhone is a better route.
Not sure about about T-Mobile and its custom ROMs , I wouldn't rush into flashing ROMs til they been tested because you will be doing a lot of debugging

You guys r perfectly right, dam my brain does not work sometimes when I need something right away. I just dont wanna be stuck with touchwiz for too long bcz I ll get tired of it quick. But the tw on note 3 is bearable for me until something gets worked out so I will just stick to what I have. I didnt even think about xposed at all most of the features i need r hopefully there. Thanks everyone for ur opinions cause u guys really helped me out. So I will be rooting my device tmorrow. Wish me lucks.

Well I'm in the same boat as you, I just bought the att n3 and didn't do my due diligence and am now considering taking it back for the tmo n3.
Im leaning towards keeping it for 3 reasons...
1. I have faith that the bootloader will be unlocked by some very ingenious man who, upon completion, shall drink copious amounts of beer on my dime.
2. I've heard all the success stories of tmo on att network and I'm left with doubt that I will have as good of coverage that I want/need/demand/deserve given my station in life.
3. I don't think that I can't make my phone 99% perfect with root + exposed framework and all that comes out of that. Though I am a flashaholic, I'm seeing less and less need to do so with this device. It has all the features I want and once I'm rooted I can freeze any bloat ware whilst tweaking my personal particulars.
Now make a personal assessment about what you want/need from your device and put some of personal thought into it.
And edit the title of your post already.

If you get sick of touchwiz there are plenty of other launchers out there that will theme your TW to look like AOSP/AOKP ect. :good:
sticking to the att note 3
Yea I m sticking to to att version of note 3. I ll work with touchwiz for now. Hopefully something happens with the bootloader. Thanks everyone.
If I were you id return it get the tmobile one. If your within the window eat the $35 to have the reassurance of not having to hope for an unlocked bootloader. Are you going to flash roms? Maybe yes maybe no. Will there be a bootloader unlock / exploit? Maybe yes maybe no. But for $35 id pay that to have an option to whether I choose to or not. For me I returned my tmobile note 3 purchased out right cause I bought my friends for $600. For $150 its not worth it

Not going to be a popular opinion here, but here it goes anyway. When I first started using Android phones, I was switching ROMs almost every other day. Lately I've gotten bored with it. I haven't loaded a custom rom on my last 3 phones. As long as I can root it, I'm good to go. As was said earlier in this thread, most of the mods that customs offer can be done yourself with a little work (and without the minor bugs that always come with custom roms). I just don't see a compelling reason to switch roms at this point. Even if you hate TW, just change your launcher (first thing I always do anyway).
Now, there are SOME reasons to hope the bootloader gets unlocked. Swapping out kernals, radios, etc. But none of that is really essential for me.
I came to this phone knowing full well (having researched) the bootloader was locked and further, being sort of a niche device, developer support might be light (although we lucked out with DG). But I knew it would get rooted, and that was enough for me.
My advice would be, if you absolutely must have custom roms, return it and get the tmo. We may well never get the bootloader unlocked and if that is a must for you, then it seems you have little choice.
switched to tmobile.
Yea I couldnt take it anymore. I went ahead and jumped out the window. Got the tmobile and got it unlocked and rooted. So far everything is working amazing. Lte at 15 mb but I think its bcz of the area. I was scared that I would be getting ****ty service but this is working out better than I thought. I am at 3 to 4 bars all the time. Havent seen it drop yet. I originally bought it retail price so it makes sense for me to do this.

Canadian specific thread

Hello all. First off, congratulations on being the proud owners of this "DOPE'TASTIC" device.
I was hoping that this request would be heard by the sites MOD's and possibly even implemented.
But I was hoping that maybe someone would be so kind as to start a Canadian Carrier thread? Sprint, AT&T, T-mo all have their own and from what I have heard they all (or most) have locked boot loaders (may be horribly wrong on that, please don't crucify me). But perhaps in the goodness of the sites MOD's hearts they would consider my request. Just got this device today, AM SUPER EXCITED TO GET TWEEKING. But admittedly the many variants of the device have... complicated the research process.
Anyone agree with me???
Also, the software update which has been prompted from the point I turned this thing on. Should that be avoided allowing to begin? I bought this last night, and unfortunately am working today so I do not have the time to research that I usually would right out of the gate. Any input would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.
There is already a "Note 4 - Canadian Thread" that has a lot of information.
Ohhh, well then. Mod's please delete this thread. My apologies. :-/

Well since our thread has disappeared without explanation (being a bastard child in every galaxy) , just to answer few of yours.
Don't worry about first boot update. Allow it. It will not hamper rooting or modding. You will trip Knox.
Basically tmobile model is closest to ours, so let that be your guide, although there are some Canadian specifics that should be followed. Roms in tmobile section have Canadian instructions if they're made with us in mind in adition to tmobile.
The rest is up to you to read.
Euro firmwares are compatible as well, but more reading and specific rules to be followed are a must.

Nice! Thats exactly what I needed to know. Most devices ive used in the last 2 years were AT&T varients. Therefore i was surprised when I realized Note4 was not. Note 1+2 through Rogers were, as was the S4. So was surprised to see this is not.
Thanks for the starting point, especially with the firmware update. With Note 2 (if i remember correctly) if you accepted the initial FW update you were in trouble.

Even for s4, starting from kernel, our model was more similar to tmobile. It just happened that att had Devs that supported us more, and was root able at the beginning.
Now, due to bootloader, they don't even deserve a thread, yet they got a section. A ghost town.

lol, Yeah I noticed that. Its... The way it is I guess...
Was BLOWN AWAY buy how many variants are out there on Note 4. Was a little over whelming on the first day reading through all the forums. I really do feel that there are enough people with Canadian devises to warrant a device specific thread however. But at the very least the T-mo thread seems to cater to Canadians pretty well. iB4sTiD is in there, a name i know WELL from the AT&T S4 forums, Actually I am SUPER excited to see him working for Note4. REally solid guy, and he always builds both American and Canadian roms.
To be honest I'm little disillusioned with the custom tw rom scene. So for a while I'm keeping it stock, with my own slim down, and xposed.
See no reason to load custom rom at this time as they are basically doing what I can do for myself without someone else deciding.
Good old times when patches and hacks and customization is done on framework itself (xposed does impact performance, compared to stock, no matter what. I live with it and am happy that it's there, but it's a fact) with jkay, etc. Now custom roms are slim with xposed, which I basically explained above.
Even custom kernels are making me lose more in features than I gain in performance.

I believe we require an explanation of why our thread was deleted. There was lots of information pertaining to "our" note 4.
would just like to know at least why? our thread have been deleted too....
Guess you can message mods for answer.

I think after doing a crapload of reading that i understand what you are saying. Honestly i used to HATE touchwiz but it seems so smooth and fast on this phone that it almost feels right?
I never in my life thought I would say that I would like A TW ROM... But, it appears to work with this phone and with exposed being what it is...
Strange feeling, not immediately flashing a custom build...

Why the hell did the Canadian thread get deleted.....FFS!
@celkin please note you either have to use option in wanam module, or do a build prop edit to get rid of extreme lag once you install xposed first time.
Important note. Never turn on secure boot in security if you're loading custom recovery in the future.
Explanation to the rest. @celkin asked which modules I'm using, but couldn't post Screenshots in pm.
Thanks man. I have noticed wynham is... Strange. Thanks for the tip

It will install but no one has been able to get baseband to work.
I have message the forum mods for this section (KennyG123;jcase;oka1;jayharper08;DutchDogg54) and asked for it to be restored.
My bad guys.. I was deleting something else and the thread (earlier marked for subscription) got deleted inadvertently.

I am closing this one.
