[Video] Expanding your Nexus 7 storage options! - Nexus 7 Accessories

Quick video I put together about some neat options for limitless storage on the Nexus 7. I was going to do a write-up in this thread but the video is fast-paced enough that I'm not going to bother for now, perhaps tomorrow when I'm less busy I'll do a text write-up of it all.

Great video.
I'm currently exploring storage options for my Nexus tablet and I didn't know about the cifs storage. Too bad that it doesn't work on the stock kernel though.

Could you makea video showing how to set up cifs manager for noobs? I think it would be very beneficial for the nexus 7 community.
Thanks.

Thank you for the video. I learned a lot. I'm new to xda and I've been looking for the answer to this question everywhere, but have yet to find it. I bought a 64gb sandisk cruzer usb drive to use with my otg cable with the stickmount app. Because of limited storage, I was wondering if I could actually save installed applications to the flash drive. In other words, if I can use a feature similar to "save to sd card" for apps, but have the apps save to my flashdrive. If anyone could make a video or just type up a response, I would really appreciate it.

The one solution I can think of (and I'll test it once I get home) is to use symlinks. I'll see if that sort of solution works with stickmount.

Neat video I was considering the portable wifi drive now for a while but with that third option you mentioned that sounds pretty promising and that would make storage much easier.

What was the name of the app for the 3rd option? Couldn't find it in the play store.

I'm going to put together a tutorial tomorrow on getting cifsmanager set up.

Which OTG cable are you using? Where did you get it?

Thanks for the info! Was wondering how you are making your network share accessible over the internet when you say that your network share is web facing. Is there an easy way to set this up in DDWRT, or is this with a VPN connection of some sort? Thanks!

Nice video. My daughter tried to repeat the word "****" though...
I'll have to use a headset for any of your videos I guess.

I'll be doing a video this evening outlining the entire process for getting cifsmanager and your share set up. It's especially easy with dd-wrt, though!
Stay tuned!
EDIT: Didn't have a chance to shoot that second tutorial today. I'll make sure to put aside time to do it tomorrow.

The Epic media hub works lol.
It's a nice app. Very fast and video quality is awesome. If the price of renting movies and tv shows was $1 like Redbox I could actually see myself using this sometimes.
How do you insall it if you do not mind me asking?

Seeing as how you are brand new I will help you out.
Download the file and transfer it to your phone. Download apps installer or some other file manager from the market, most require your phone to be rooted. Click on the file and install.
Next time though make sure you read around the forum as it is discussed in lots of places how to install apk files.
The app looks nice, but who is going to pay $3 for one episode of a tv show? If Samsung is going to play in this space they better get the cost down or everyone is going to pass them buy.
Personally, I don't even like paying $1 for something i can transfer from my DVR.
so.... unsupported file type?
I downloaded Iron Man from the media hub and my captivate says "device does not support requested file type" has anyone else had an issue with this?
Mine won't play the picture. Frustrating

No need to root your phone. You just need to sideload the apk.

Awesome! Too bad it's becoming something I might not ever use. Still wanted to say thanks for sharing this.
Wouldn't you need to root the phone as there is already a Media Hub app on /system?

Bah - my brother has the Epic and was able to rent/dl movies from it.
Of course the Captivate doesn't work at all. Any word from Samsung if they are currently working on a fix? Or is this yet another lockdown from AT&T to prevent us from using it and just missed the "to be removed" on the ol' checklist?
works great. The TV section is lacking but the Movie selection is quite impressive.
Are you saying that you're able to watch movies?
Mine just shows a black screen too

Nook Color Teardown

There's a gallery of NC teardown pics at zdnet. XDA isn't letting me post the link because i'm not verified, so maybe someone else can.
This was inevitable, but I hadn't been able to find it until today. I thought others might be interested as well.
http://www.zdnet.com/photos/nookcolor-teardown/487636 here it is
From the pictures I see a good possibility for a bigger battery, or even adding a second one. Lots of room, it won't be pretty but something could be fashioned to fit.

Looks good.
Nice to see some more details about the NC coming out, I have yet to find a *detailed* list of the real hardware specs though.. most of the "tech specs" list mention supported ebook formats...
I ordered one of these the other day via a relative in the US and hopefully will be getting it next week some time.
I will miss the haptic feedback though so am wondering if it will be possible to replace the useless mono speaker with a motor from a mobile phone or something..
/mrintegrity
Cool idea. But it'll only work for typing and maybe apps that have clicking sounds. Still, it should work just fine. Of course you'd have to attach it to the inside real tight. Duck tape won't do

Thanks, my mind is kinda running over with ideas actually
From the teardown pics the internals seem pretty basic and there is hopefully a good bit of space. I would love to know if there are any available usb / jtag / etc headers available though.
If not I was thinking also about the possibility of modifying the usb connector with a switch and a usb 3g dongle inside, I just don't know if there is a 3g dongle that is not based on mini pcie though.
As for the haptic feedback I guess you can just assign a "sound" to everything that should produce feedback.
What about the accellerometer, is that sufficient to control cars in steering wheel based games?
/mrintegrity
To answer your very last question yes.. I have Asphalt5 running and won my first race.

The usb dongle would have to support android. To my knowledge there isn't one... but physically it is possible to stick it inside. They aren't that big, just look big cause of the plastic casing.
I think realistically, for now a bigger battery should be the first thing attempted, given the OS limitations we'd face with other mods. It would also allow us to run the NC at 800 mhz at all times via setcpu.

Did you download from the Gameloft site? I couldnt get the version from my G2 to get past the license check, and the only other version I've tried is a pirated 3.13 version. I would be glad to pay for it if I knew it would work.
Tried disabling the compatibility mode and the top of the screen is blank and I have to press high to get selections to work.
EDIT: I figured it out. You have to load a version made for Samsung Galaxy Tab or Galaxy S. I downloaded a version from Gameloft.com with Galaxy Tab selected as my phone and the game displays fine. If you purchase from their website you have to do some trickery. When they text you a download link, just type the link address from your phone in a browser on the Nook Color and the download should start and install the game.
isolated_epidemic - I'm having the same issue as you with Asphalt, as well as some of the other GameLoft games. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Nexus 7 Guide Book available for Play Books, powered USB

The guide book can be found at the link below.
https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=gKmQD47OvCYC
Some pretty good info inside. On pages 67-69 it talks about connecting USB keyboards, mice and other devices. It states that if connecting more than one device you should use a powered hub to reduce power drain on your tablet. I am holding out hope for OTG USB memory support although there is no mention of it.
I love that parts of the guidebook are unfinished. Pages 24-25 have several unimportant sections that just read Content to come. Real classy, Google. (Not that I care, I can't wait for my tablet to arrive!)

You're forgetting that this guidebook was only published early so that the developers (ie those with Nexus 7's) could see and use it. The complete version will be out with the general release of the Nexus 7.

Nope Otherwise it would be my go-to reader...very smooth, great display, etc. You can look at the files that it breaks the books up into if you "pin" one of their free books to your device.

The main thing is that it allows you to hook up these devices without a powered hub, which means we have power. Even if it does have some sort of hangup with storage, I doubt it'll be more than a week or two before that gets modded.
Long story short, it looks like we have the hardware that we need for Host/OTG!
Any chance someone could put a copy of the guidebook on here somehow for those of us that can't get books etc. from Play Store.
Didn't get Play Store credit or any free content at all here in Ireland but at least got my hands on a device

[PETITION] Native USB mounting in L

Hi forum,
As you probably know, the Nexus 5 requires root to be able to mount USB thumbdrives. This can become quite annoying with OTA updates etc. I've started a request on the L bug tracker, if you could take a minute of your time to star the request we might get it integrated! Thanks in advance.
EDIT: We've been merged! Everyone please comment and star this new link, even if you did the old one!
https://code.google.com/p/android-developer-preview/issues/detail?id=215
I am supporting that idea. I am also eager to see notification light for missed calls.
A native support would be good but using Nexus Media Importer or Total Commander with USB Stick Plugin does the job, right?

Nexus Media Importer is paid and I was unaware of Total Commander. Must try that out later on. But even then, what if those apps don't get updated for L support? It'd be better to just have it integrated IMO.

There's a trial version as well. It is fully functional and the trial period gets extended as and when the app gets updated every month. The "paid" app of the plugin is just to support the developer.

Really? It's 99 cents. Support the developers or we won't have quality apps being made!
I'm pretty sure ES file explorer supports this but I've not tested it.
When you say native support, what do you mean? The phone already supports it, you just need an app to use it.

You need root to access the usb drive via ES File Explorer. The only way to use a usb stick on an unrooted nexus 5 is to either buy Nexus Media Importer which costs about $4 or to use Total Commander with USB Stick plugin.
I really don't care about this as I'm on always on a custom rom/kernel which mounts it automatically. But it would be good to have Native support for people who don't root

Exactly. By native mounting I mean that they should act like sdcards and automatically mount, and be unmountable from the storage menu. And that they show up in file explorer like Usb0 in the same directory as sdcard0.
Looks like it's already been acknowledged a week ago on a different report though:

I thought this was not included without root because of security issues. Would make it real easy to copy all files on a device. I'm also not surprised this has not been added because Google feels sd cards can cause issues. I use stickmount https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount which has a free version or you can support the Dev and get the paid version.

Interesting how that report 215 didn't show up when I searched the bug tracker before making mine. Oh well.
I'm curious about the support provided by things like ES File Explorer. Can I mount the USB stick and access it from other apps directly (like play a movie off the stick in MX player by browsing to the mountpoint), or is ES File Explorer really the only app that can access the mounted stick (due to all the sandboxing)?
