[For Ubuntu and Android Experts]Android not being detected by my Ubuntu Laptop - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Friends,
I am new to Android Development, so i created a simple app in Eclipse using ADT (On Ubuntu), now i want to deploy it on my Samsung Galaxy Note (ICS 4.03)
I have created the app using the correct api version (15), however i am unable to see my connected phone as a target to run my app on.
Upon further investigation i ran lsusb to check if my android has been detected, however i cant see the phone anywhere in the list.
I have set the USB Debugging Option.
My Question is, how do i detect if my android phone has been detected by Ubuntu, i can see that the phone is charging but how do i check if the mobile is ready to receive data in the form of apk's for deploying the app ?
Thanks,
Abhishek

On device debugging?

Can anyone confirm or deny whether on device debugging works for app development in eclipse?
I have been writing apps using my Desire and I can debug to the device (breakpoints, step through code etc) but I can't seem to get it to work with the Tab.
I'm running under Ubuntu x64 as a Guest Virtual machine using VMWare Workstation under Windows 7 Pro x64.
I have no problems at all with the desire but can't get the Tab to show up as a debug capable device in the linux guest.
Any ideas please?

EDIT: Installing the Galaxy S driver allowes me to "Run" my apps on the device but I still can't "debug" on the device. Has any body been able to link to the debugger and debug on the device yet?
Thanks

[Q] Problem with usb debugging galaxy s I9001

Hello,
before you delete this post as duplicate let me say it is not the case.
I have a problem that I can't debug from eclipse my Samsung galaxy s+.
First of all I must say that under windows I have installed latest kies with drivers for I9001 and device is visible on windows (in devices) in both mode kies or mass storage.
After I installed all explained in "Android Development Tutorial" my device couldn't be found in eclipse.
Than I searched for similar posts and tried all explained in post "[Q] Problem with usb debugging mode miui.us in eclipse".
Again no positive result.
Than I connected Samsung galaxy s I9000 from my friend and his device was found without problem.
Than again I tried to find mine but again without any progress.
I also tried with another device from another friend which also have I9001 and his device also can't be found.
I'm using windows XP and latest drivers and eclipse as explained in your "Android Development Tutorial".
I still think that something with drivers for eclipse is problematic. Can you please help?
Thanks!
Kind regards,
Beco_os
What about the normal adb command line interface?
What happens when you use "adb kill-server" and then try a "adb shell"?
If the above commands do not work: if you use windows OS, what is displayed in device manager while the phone is connected in USB debug mode?

Hello,
I tried in both usb modes on Galaxy S+.
1) Mode when Galaxy S+ was in mass storage mode:
d:\Downloads\SamsungMobile\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb kill-server
d:\Downloads\SamsungMobile\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb shell
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
error: device not found
On Windows in devices I found 2 mass storage:
*Disk drives
- SAMSUNG GT-I9001 Card USB device
- SAMSUNG GT-I9001 Card USB device
2) Mode when Galaxy S+ was in Kies mode:
d:\Downloads\SamsungMobile\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb kill-server
d:\Downloads\SamsungMobile\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb shell
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
error: device not found
On Windows in devices I found:
*Modems
- SAMSUNG Android USB Modem
*Universal Serial Bus Controllers
- SAMSUNG Android USB Composite Device
So it seems that still adb drivers doesn't work for GT-I9001.
Kind regards,
Berislav
And USB Debugging is enabled on the phone? Settings - Applications Development - USB Debugging
It works fine for me on both XXKPS and XXKPU.
Hi,
thanks for support, but it seems I'm special case
I have 2.3.6 XXKPH version, maybe that can be the cause of problem.
I'm left without idea. I tried reinstallation of all drivers on my PS but nothing is working.
Never the less my friend have galaxy s plus with firmware 2.3.5 XXKPG (this is originally installed on phone when you buy it in Croatia) and have same problem.
Is it possible that someone who don't have problem test this versions of firmware for debugging?
KR,
Berislav
I red somewhere that low powered USB could cause this on i9001, so I bought powered USB Hub and issue is still there. Tried it on Mac OS/X 10.6.8 and no way, Ubuntu 10.10 and no way. I tried XXKPH and XXKPI, editting ~/.android/adb_usb.ini and added Samsung Vendor and/or device id without any approach.
Galaxy S II and Galaxy S are detected properly on these computers.
Bad news

I have some bad news about this. I tried another gt-i9001 and it was perfectly detected without doing anything special ( XXKPH ). Visually, this device differs from non working model by missing caption "with Google TM" on the backside and added sticker "DIGITAL BY QUALCOMM" on the top side between jack connector and usb connector. Below battery, both has same information:
MODEL: GT-I9001
SSN: -I9001GSMH
RATED: 3.7 V; 1000 mA
FCC ID: A3LGTI9001
MADE BY SAMSUNG
Non working device has note R176 on sdcard slot, properly working one has G140 there.
... so it seems, we are ****ed. This is something hardware-based.
Same problem here

Hello, I have a same problem, I ve opened back case and the number on sd card slot reads 512S. Could this really be the hardware issue?
I ve bought my phone in Serbia.

Hello
I have similar problem but I found that my computer see ”Samsung Android Composite ADB Interface” in device manager when phone is power off. So command ”adb devices” finds my device. But when I power my phone on, at the moment when Samsung logo is shown, my device manager detects change of hardware reloads and ADB interface is missing. It is the same behavior on other computers with Win 7 x64 and Ubuntu 32bit.
At Windows I tried both Google drivers from SDK and Samsung KIES which detects ADB as I wrote. By the way KIES normally detects my phone when the device is on. I have USB Debugging mode enabled, but it seems it doesn't work. I have i9001 European distribution and I'm using stock rom I9001XXKPK, before I was using I9001XXKI2 but the problem was the same.
Have you got any ideas what to do? Where is the problem? Is there any command to force enable USB debugging through ADB?
Thanks for advices.

Phone not recognized by ADB in Ubuntu

Hi Guys
I am trying to learn android programming and my pc running ubuntu 12.04 is not recognizing the p990 on cm 10.1. I remember that the phone used to be detected while running official ICS.
I used to get around this problem by using ADB over wifi to access the device.
But after the cm10.1 update to android 4.2.2 adb over wifi is not working anymore.
i tried adding entries to 51-android.rules file. But that doesn't work either(I think adding the rules only work if the device is listed using the lsusb command. In my case it is not listing as a usb device).
Charging is working fine BTW.
I am currently running cm 10.1 feb -19 rom with kowalski 100p3 kernel and old bootloader
Please help....
do you have installed Android-SDK? This is recommend
yes, i can connect nexus 7 without any problem.
Did you try start adb as root on your Linux box? Mine only works as this.
Sent from my LG-P990 using xda app-developers app
No, I will try that.
But i think it has to do with the new confirm prompt for debugging that was introduced in 4.2.2. It doesn't appear when I try debugging over WiFi. Any idea how i can override that prompt or add my PC to the adb white-list
Adb should not be starting as root. Please don't do this. What you need is properly configure udev rules to recognize your device and set the proper rights for device node in /dev.

May I ask why? I'm using it for years like this. And it's fine.

Thanks . that is what i am trying to figure out.
i need to clarify a couple of things though.
1) Does udev rules work even when the device is not listed using 'lsusb' command?
2) i think the manufacture id for lg is 1004. but i am not able to find its product id.Does any one have an idea.?
also it would be nice if somebody could share the complete rule. I believe it is usually added to '51-android.rules' file.
Thanks in advance .
Re: [fixed]Phone not recognized by ADB in Ubuntu
A complete wipe and re install of the latest nightly fixed it. The phone was detected in USB mass storage mode.
Updating here so that any body who come across three same issue might find it helpful.

Problems with MTP drivers to get kindle connected to PC

I have a problem I have a kindle fire and getting the drivers installed is the problem
I have install the ADB driver but am having extreme difficulties getting the MTP drivers to work
I have tried everything (every solution on Google)
and nothing works
I've tried the "Media Transfer Protocol Porting Kit"
I tried to get Microsoft help they gave me the run around and confused me even more.
I tried to Go to Device Manager, under Portable Devices, right-click on MTP USB Device, and then click on Update Driver Software to update the MTP USB device driver. I then Selected “Browse my computer for driver software” to locate and install MTP USB device driver software manually.I then Selected “Let me pick from a List of device drivers on your computer”. A list will show installed driver software compatible with the device but I dont know what to pick
can someone help me please
is there an alternative solution to this Problem?
Try reading this thread, I tried to quote from it using my xda app for you and accidentally bumped it somehow...

I tried what they said nothing worked
I cant Reinstall win7 because it is an OEM
I tried to install alternative driver for the MTP drivers the triangle went away or MTP error disappeared but I don't know if I choose the right one
I choose from a list
when I plug in the kindle a different message comes up
"some computers require a free file transfer utility to copy files between the computer and you kindle."
I have WMP the latest version
what do I need to get this working is there something I can download and install to override this issue.
Is your version of windows 7 a non us versions, because that's what I believe his issue is. Also your PC should have a windows 7 key on it so u can always reformat it, but you need a disk, and if you don't have one I can't really help you obtain one because I am not aware of if its illegal to DL stuff u already own off then internet and i would rather not get banned from this forum if it is. However if MTP is very important and u absolutely need it, go to ubuntu's website and download a desktop live CD, if you don't know your processor type juse 32 bit, but most modern PC's are 64 bit. Anyways if all goes well after burning it to a cd or making a bootable flash drive, u can boot into a live os and it should have mtp and u can transfer stuff. I on the other hand cannot do this because I use an older version of Ubuntu on a small partition and it is a pain to upgrade distros and I hate the new interface, but from what I have read the new versions of Ubuntu will work with your kindle. You can always install Linux along side windows but if you don't know a thing about resizing partitions, then i wouldn't suggest it because u might wipe your windows os and that would suck. BTW ubuntu is completely legal compared to what I was questioning above about windows. Yay Linux!!!

how do I check the status of my windows OS and I am running UBUNTU 12.04 alongside my windows OS
Im not that familar with Ubuntu as I would like to. I tried to sync my kindle to ubuntu, try to root my kindle and it was very complex
more than on windows
Funny, I find it easier to root on Ubuntu than on windows, no driver problems and then binary bash script works the same way. I am unfamiliar with "syncing" a kindle, especially on Ubuntu, I never sync mine I just use it like I would a flash drive, drag and drop files to it. Should work the name way on Ubuntu I think, I use an older version of Ubuntu that can't open it as an MTP device, so i just push and pull with adb. My only problem with helping you doing this on Ubuntu is your using 12.04, and I don't use the new ones because I don't like the new interface, i use gnome based desktop environment. So I can't exactly say where to click to open the kindle, but if I had to guess you can simply open a nautilus window from that bar on the left of the screen, any thing on it that's a folder will do, from there there should be a pane on the left if the window where the kindle would show up as a device u can click and view the contents of. I'm kinda basing this off what happens when I use a camera or iPod on mine, I assume kindle would show up the same way. If this is not the case you may have to install a package for an MTP browser, again not familiar with the interface and from what I remember trying it last time they took out the synaptic package manager by default, so I would have to tell u a command to run in a terminal to install it instead if need be. Tell me how it goes I will try to help as much as I can.
I kinda feel like I put too much information in this post...
Oh and as for telling your windows os, it may tell if you right click my computer( on start menu) and hit properties. Another way to throw a guess at it is ask yourself "Do you live in the USA?". Windows I think will say something about it in the properties of my computer though, if not you can try running winver from the run box it may display something useful. I don't have my PC booted up into windows right now so i can't verify this, and I kinda host a minecraft server on it in Linux most of the time so I don't shut it down unless I need to and its empty.

Thanks a bunch!
The answer to get a Kindle recognised by Widnows 7
plug kindle into pc
ignore unpleasant driver message
enter device manager and click the following:
update driver software
browse my computer for driver software
let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
select 'portable device' from the list
select 'standard mtp device' from the list
select 'mtp usb device' from the list
click next"
This worked after hours of trying to get my Kindle to work in windows 10!
Thanks @Achilles1783

Clockworkmod Tether used to work on Kitkat but not anymore on Lollipop. Could you please help?
I'm sorry but why are you still on developer preview?
Thanks for asking. I am not on developer preview. I have lollipop 5.0.2. Do you have any ideas as to how to get wifi tether to work?

Step 1 Enable Adb
Step 2 navigate to where you have ADB installed
Step 3 Run ADB shell
Step 4 Run settings put global tether_dun_required 0
Step 5 Type Exit
Wifi tethering works for me on the Nexus 5. This should prevent your carrier from seeing tethering usage until the next android update of course. You pay for data and have the right to use it however you want to I think it wrong for Google or carriers to tell you differently.
Thanks Napster!
I got it to work while your message came in. It was the Avast antivirus interferering with the way Clockworkmod Tether on Win 7 communicated with Clockworkmod app on Lollipop 5.0.2.
Could you please let me know how to operate the ADB Shell? Where do I download it?
I wholeheartedly agree with your last statement. I'm on the magenta company based in Seattle, WA and thankfully they havent bugged me about it, but I want to stay under the radar, so I would like to implement your suggestion
