Flash question and understanding.... And a basic question - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey.
I want to buy a SGN but I'm aware of the emmc brick bug.
Tell me if I'm right:
If my galaxy is rooted and on a safe kernel like Notecore, I can make a data reset in recovery right?
But if I'm not on safe kernel use mobil Odin or just Odin to downgrade to GB wipe and flash afterwards. Is this also correct?
If I'm on safe ICS and i Want to use a CM Rom, I can also wipe data and the bug won't come, because CM9 doesn't use Samsungs repositories. Is this correct?
So that means, if I'll use TW (ICS) with a safe kernel or CM9 or CM10, I could wipe data with no problem?
What is about wiping boot and system?
I hope you can answer me.
And another one:
Would you upgrade from a S2 or do you would wait for other devices.
Thanks

Wait for the note 2, it will be introduce in aug.29, i know you would wait for it. Because samsung know about defective emmc chip of note1 they will implement a new safer emmc chip that it will be brick bug free. Im sure samsung will learn from there mistakes and be wise enough to do it right in note 2. So all your concern about brick bug will not be there in note2.

i agree with jon, i would wait for Note 2.
but it seems you have already done a lot of reading from the available literature in this forum....and maybe even collected files ?
Notecore and speedmod and CM9/10 kernels are safe to do your wipes from, this includes wiping boot and /or system if specifically required .
Mobile odin is safe too for all the functions it does.
once in a while you will find yourself on unsafe stock/stock -based kernel ,
you may wish to change your kernel for various activities ( like flashing roms/wiping), its best to change to a safer kernel via pc odin. this gives you a yellow triangle but this can be erased with the app - Triangle Away which works on 4.0.4.
as regards moving from a ics rom to cm9 or cm10 please follow the instructions in the OP of the rom thread.
GB is the safest place to be in. you can move to any point from there.

Next scenario:
If I'm on an unsafe kernel and i Want to switch Rom, I do:
Flash safe kernel like speed mod
Wipe data
Wipe boot
Flash Rom I like for example tw ics rom
Flash safe kernel again
Maybe fix permissions
And reboot
Is that correct?
So basicly as a crankflasher nothing changes if the kernel is safe.
If it's not, make it safe before...
ALSO TRUE?
too bad no one recommends the note. I know the note 2 will be presented on Wednesday but what will be the release price? 600€ or more...
Now I can sell my s2 for 250€ and get a note 1 for 330€....
Why you cannot recommend the note 1. Only because of emmc bug?
Regards
Phil

Important reboot recovery after flashing safe kernel. Of course dependant on how its flashed, better safe to stress to bebon safe kernel, and rebot on safe kernel recovery. Then
wipe data, cache and dalvik, instead of boot.
when going from gb to ics, format system in mounts, data is optional to have clean install. Sometimes sdcard to, but then remove external sd in case sdcard and external are mapped incorrectly. (dont format efs here, rest can be safely formatted). Its also applicable for ICS to ICS if you want clean install with minimum risk of lingering files that can conflict.

Thanks so I understand...
Is there a safer than safe kernel? Basicly its not important if the safe kernel fits the the Rom right?
So flash safe kernel, reboot recovery, do what you like...
So know, pls tell me, why you can't recommend a note 1 )
Thx a lot

Dont get me wrong here i love my note 1, i had galaxy s2 also, if not for note 2 and without blinking i would recommend note 1 to you and answer your questions. I love note so much that if i had money i certainly buy the note 2, this is not wise dicision for me right now. Maybe next year i will buy note3.

Thanks for your response. Maybe another opinion, to buy note 1 or not.
I'm a bit unsecure

Safe ICS

Hi, just got my Note today, going to root it soon... I've been reading about unsafe kernels in ics roms, are any ics roms safe to flash? If so, which ones?
Any help is appreciated, thanks
Its my belief that cyangonmod 9 experimental builds do not use a leaked kernel and are therefore safe. I'm using now and build 3 is awesome. You need to save a file to a certain directory, can't remember which one, for video to work. But is a simple fix.

If u can wait the official ics it will be better man,and u have many things to try in ur note untill then, other wise play safe and read all posts throughly before flashing, congratulation on ur new note too
↖(^▽^)↗ Sent from Rego Galaxy Note ↖(^▽^)↗
OK so if your new to flashing then I would advice you to stay away from cs for now and just read the basics for a couple of weeks (its what I did) .
And after you have fully understood how to flash using PC Odin ,mobile Odin
Learnt how to root ,install CWM and use it then be my guest.
The only safe and easy to flash ICS ROM is CM9 ,but you have to flash it per instructions and from properly rooted GB ROM.
I hope that helped
Welcome to the note
Thanks for the replies, definitely not new to android and flashing. Rooted and installed cm9, didn't like it so reverted back to stock rooted.
Thanks again

Fair enough. Personal opinion I guess. I think cm9 is the best ics out at the moment.

Stunner version 19 is the best rom I ever had on my gnote. Battery was even better then stock rom.
CM9, is still being developed, but looks extremely promising.
If only I knew how to build like team hacksun and team passion

I totally agree! His .19 rom is the best rom I've used as well! If it weren't for the faulty kernel I might not even go through the trouble of flashing the official ICS rom when it will be released. Now I'm back on GB and it's still the best experience I've ever had on a smartphone but ICS is just the cherry on top.
I can't wait for the official ICS release so Stunner can do his magic with a non-faulty kernel.

GotBrickBug Warning - Any Advice ?

Hello all
I have installed the 'got brickbug' app onto my 'note' today and it comes back with the message:
eMMC chip
type:VYL00M
CID:15010056594c30304d19bf535e873f5d
Revision: 0x19
Verdict:
DANGER ! This eMMC chip is *KNOWN* to have the brick bug !
I haven't rooted it or flashed another ROM onto it and quite frankly I'm not sure what to do?
Do I need to send it back to Samsung or how do I change the status of the eMMC chip to *SAFE* ?
What limitations are there with this Galaxy Note I have?
Can I do a 'factory reset' of the original stock rom thats installed by manufacturer?
Can I flash a custom ROM?
Can I root?
I don't want to brick it and have to send it back and wait weeks for it to be returned.
Thanks for reading.
Dont worry too much youre note is no different than the majority.
Advise not to factory reset on stock rom
Follow dr kretans root method for ics using pc odin. And once on safe kernel the risk is reduced so custom roms are ok.
You cant change the status yet as there is no fix

That info definitely warranted a new thread here .

So basically If I went to 'recovery mode' and chose 'wipe factory data / reset' ?
That simple basic task could brick the phone?
Unreal !

So from what I understand is, that the factory original stock rom with the original embedded kernel plays a part in the bricking process, should it happen ?
To avoid that, flash with a 'safe' kernel:
(speedmod-kernel-n7000-ics-k3-11-Odin)
notecore kernel from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749863&highlight=notecore
What about the kernel from this link:
http://www.androidauthority.com/gal...cs-cyanogenmod-9-cm9-official-nightly-107611/
(hardcore-speedmod-ics-recovery-n7000)
Is the 'CWM'.zip safe to use from this link ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716088

Thanks :good:
nope cwm.zip is not safe.

But all the kernels I mention are SAFE ??

[Q] From CleaNote to Crash Rom... or another one

Hi friends,
I'm a new GNote owner with CleaNote rom and Hydracore kernel installed.
I've heard that CleaNote will be discontinued and I'm seraching for a new Long Time Support (Yes I use Linux desktop computer ) rom.
I've selected Crash Rom, Criskelo and Rocket Rom. I don't know witch one to choose but I'm CF-Root oriented. Last thing, I'm not interested by GApps (various hubs and co) but I need Radio FM and I want to flash with CWM only (no Odin).
I've two questions :
- In your opinion, what of theese rom do have I to choose ? (or what else)
- I've seen in Crash install procedure that I have to flash Abyss kernel first. Is it a no-discuss option or can I do the install with a safe kernel like my Hydracore ?
Thank you for your help.
I like criskelo vry much.stock oriented and available wd cf foot.
See abyss kernel is for safe and thats help custom roms in flashing.

See dont use stock kernels on ics.and every custom dev kept its rom safe for flashing.

I know ICS stock kernel is a GNote killer . Yhat's why I've immediately flashed Hydracore.
Any other opinions about all these roms ?

Hydracore is safe to flash any rom so no need to use abyss kennel ( abyss for flashing new rom only ),just follow op instruction but ignore abyss thing.
Phil kennel is like cf root but triple safe and both battery friendly ( can find in original dev) , hydracore is more performance and tripple safe too.Your choice
Criskelo discontinuous support his rom. Every rom are good , try out and see which one is fit your taste.
Hi,
You're perfectly clear, as your explainations, Thank you.
I think that I'll test every one for a week each before deciding.
Last question. For install between these roms, do I need to to a reset factory (and say bye to my apps) or can I try a simple dalvik/cache wipe ?

Try first without factory reset and if you don't run into force closes---you're good !
If you do.....you have to factory reset.
But you can backup your apps using Titanium Backup and restore all non-system apps(i.e. user apps).I do this regularly...Saves me the trouble of reinstalling that crapload of games !
I'll try... I'll try.
But anyway, I've no game on my note except a Klondike....:good:

Recommend full wipe on every rom , this will save you alot problem later and take about 30 min to do.. you can use tt back up your app or manually install 1 by 1 take little longer but this method really good.. Enjoy
Ok. Thank you. I'll be a cool and patient guy... and I'll make Titanium Backup hot.
But, for my curiosity, what do I risk with no wipe between : bootloop ? brick ? nuclear explosion ? anything else ?

[Q] Perform a clean downgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.0.4

Hello there XDA.
First I would like to apologize if this has already been answered. I searched for the past 3 hours but did not find anything that would fully answer my questions.
So I have a Samsung GT-N7000 Galaxy Note running the stock 4.1.2 LT4 ROM (rooted). The device is unbranded and bought from Germany. Because it lags horribly everywhere, I want to get ICS and the old TouchWiz back, so I decided to downgrade to the latest ICS ROM that has TouchWiz 4, and, after searching, I found that it is N7000XXLRK.
These are my questions:
- what do I have to do to fully wipe the phone before I downgrade to N7000XXLRK, therefore completely removing any traces of older ROMs, in order to do a clean install? Do I have to use some option in PC Odin? Maybe wipe some partitions in Recovery (I have installed PhilZ CWM for LT4)? Cache, data, system, or maybe some others, too?
- what partitions are safe to wipe from CWM and what are not?
- what else should I do to ensure that the new ROM works properly?
- is there anything that needs to be backup-ed, aside from apps (I use TitaniumBackup for that) and all files on the sdcard and external_sd partitions?
I mention that before LT4 I had all Stock 2.3 ROMs, all Stock ICS ROMs 2 AllianceROMs and 3 leaked Jelly Bean ROMs.
Thanks in advance.
See friend... this is Easy, I think as you are on xxlt4 u must be running philz, c.o.h or speedmod//??.. if yes, boot to recovery and go to mount and storage option and then format everything... after that.. go to the bootloader, VOLdown+home+Power.. and then directly flash your ICS ROM, this would be a perfect clean install!!!
hit- THanks please

Hello NoteboyTech.
All right. Thanks for the answer. I will try it. Yes, I am on official XXLT4 with PhilZ CWM, but no custom kernel.
P.S. Have you or anybody else tested this before? I may be a little paranoid but I am afraid not to brick my device, as I have read that some users were unable to use the phone function after formatting /efs or /boot in CWM.

[Q] My Ace is slowly dying

Hello
I have a problem with my Ace, and I do not know what's going on.
Every few days, my storage clears itself, and I have to re-flash the original ROM via odin.
I have tried ROMs other than stock, but the problem is still there.
It is really annoying, as my messages and contacts are also cleared.
What could be causing this? I am on the brink of throwing it out the window!

don't use too much apps and use performance scripts like fly on mod or pure performance if you see slow performance
also as you use roms like cm 10.1 by mardon and cup cake don't expect them to have god speed {though it is cm}
install apps as much as you can on sd card and leave phone memory and see the change in phone
also do a wipe cache in recovery

Even the stock rom clears itself every day (roughly).
it is fast, performance wise, when it works.
When i say wipes itself, i mean nothing but download mode usable.
