I like customization, but sometimes it's just stupid - Off-topic

You have to ask why, what is the reason behind the customizations you do. Customization for customization sake is just not going to work.
For me, I customize to make my phone easier to use and better looking, that's all. if a customization doesn't serve neither of these purloses, I'm not gonna do it no matter how cool it may seem.
But sometimes it seems to me people just "customize" to be "cool", "unconventional", "unique", "style" or whatever other phsycological satisfactions people get from it.
This time I'm not gonna get into the crappy themes, cuz people will jsut claim it's their personal opinion to like the ****ty themes.
Let's take a look at this mod:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1692233
it's an audio "enhancement" mod that supposidly "improves" your audio.
Features:
-System Wide What I can't turn it off if it sucks?
-Maximum Audio Re-sampling (Re-Sampling sound to 48kHz!) Why in the love of ****, would you resample it to 48Khz? anyone who knows ANYTHING about sound quality in digital audio, knows not to resample into a simillar sample rate. You know you might get minor improvements if you upsample it to 88.2Khz or even 96khz. But 48Khz? it's not gonna do anything but vastly decrease sound quality
-DPS Manager V3
-AudioFX DSP Widget [Removed in AOSP/AOKP]
-Massively Improved overall sound How? where? highs lows mids? soundstage? clarity? positioning? warmth? coloring?
-Improved Beats Audio Effect again, how?
-Louder, Clearer vocals in the background ok fair enough, but what headphones are you using? please don't tell me it's Beats
-100% FULLY ACTIVATED ALSA MODULES AND DRIVERS! (SPECIFICALLY COMPILED FOR TLV320AIC3008) (TEGRA 3 ONE X ONLY) I don't know man, it just seems to me that the stock roms from any phone don't have ANY driver working, they always require a mod
-Sony xLOUD Engine you mean that dynamic range compressor that DECREASES sound quality?
-Powerful, Louder Bass (MegaBass)
-More Powerful Drums It just seems to me that every false audio quality advertising focuses on bass and drums. from cheap headphones to crap audio players
-Walkman Sound Enhancement Features: ClearBass, ClearVoice, Clear Audio, Hearing Protection, VPT Wrapper yea let's stack as many effects as possible ontop of the origional audio. it's gonna vastly "improve" my audio!
-Walkman Music Player

Any audiophil knows that in the world of HiFi, Beats doesn't mean ****. nobody uses Beats headphones. People who care about audio quality more than anyone else use AKG, Sennhaiser, Ultimate Ears, Deon excetera excetera, even Bose is more prestigious than Beats.
So, if you know that, "Beats Audio" isn't cool at all.
Clearly, this mod is probably not going to increase your overall audio quality. In fact it will do more harm than good because of the resampling.
People somehow always want to believe that the professionals suck, somehow all the programmers working for HTC are assholes they either don't know how to or don't want to make your sound drivers work. So somehow we require a mod to "fix" it.
There is also a belief that somwhow all the audio mixing engineers and studios are filled with idiots and retards who don't know how to mix songs properly. Therefore somehow we need to add in equalizers, compressors, filters, 3D effects, crossfeeding, SRS audio, doulby audio, beats audio all at the same time to make them sound "better".
yea, I don't think so.
======================================================================================
And there is the "Sony Mobile Bravia Engine" which people also feel like intergrading into their ROMs and making mods to add this feature to your phone.
This one is really simillar to beats audio. Anyone who knows about display quality knows this is just an advertising tool, it's not gonna imrpove your audio quality in any way. The only way to improve on the software level, is to make a display calibration and make sure you're following stricktly with the sRGB standard.
Any software that deviates from that, will not improve but decrease your image quality, PERIOD.
so Bravia has two choices here, it either does NOTHING, or it DECREASES your image quality. because it's made for ****ty sony TFT TN screeens, it can't be calibrated with whatever non-sony phone you're using.
However there is one exception when image enhancing softwares could potentially work, that is if your image or vidio isn't properly developed. The fix of which isn't to implement a system wide screen filter, it's to fix that particular image! or make your video show up properly by fixing your video player.
so in conclusion, does XDA have a lot of skilled developers? yea you bet. But too bad they don't seem to read up on anything but coding.
Do people in XDA like customizing? same answer. But they don't seem to know why they're customizing their phones.

Don't know much about audio and I mainly just use stock settings and players so I can't comment on that.
Other than that why do you care if others like customising. You don't? congratulations. The basic answer is because people like options. Having options are not a bad thing. people customise because they want to for aesthetics, functionality or both . No point in ranting about it. Why do people like or do anything?

I'm confused at how you've managed to connect these to that particular mod. The mod itself is meant to improve your phone by making it "better sounding"; its rationale isn't just to be "cool", "unconventional", etc. Even if it doesn't work (I wouldn't know), it's still not "customization for customization's sake".

I don't know a lot of things, but I know that xLoud improves the audio quality (in fact, just make the sound louder, and only works with the speaker). I say that because I have a Sony phone. Also, what you can judge on this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609868
Say whatever you want, this improves my sound quality a LOT.

there are physical limits to how loud your speaker can go, and tha cannot be changed by any kind of software. The way to make it louder is to use a compressor, which compresses the dynmaic range of your song. in other words, it makes all the parts that are not on max loudness louder.
This obviously decreases your audio quality, because you want more dynamic range in your audio just like you want 16-bit CD quality audio over the 8-bit NES audio. a compressor won't make your audio 8-bit because it's wayyyy smaller than 16-bit, but it's going in the same direction.
my recommendation for actually getting better sond quality and loudness, is to get a good blutooth speaker. or use some good headphones.

Again, this is for speakers. And I don't see any differences. The sound is really good, and I think 90% of the other Sony users too. Mostly doesn't even know what you know (even some experienced users), so it's good for them.

There are physical limits, yes, but generally manufacturers set the max sound that standard volume will achieve below that so as not to have to worry about the speaker being destroyed or the sound being too distorted. Software tweaks can most definitely make a difference. That's a big part of why a lot of people got Power Amp when it first dropped.

His reasons are indeed correct. Honestly, who wants a distorted sound quality when they can be the best with stock settings? Being such an audiophile, I highly doubt that most of the people will aware of the decrease in the sound quality, instead of the placebo of the modded 'better' audio mod. It is tuned to be heard better in speakers or headphones (xLoud, Beats boost etc.) for MOST people. So it will (or has it?) becomes a stereotype. Therefore, his rationale is true for me, but false on the majority.
Aaaand, he has the right to rant it out here as long as Archer or other Mods said he could.

I can buy apple as much as I want
but it won't change the fact that some of the mods people post here are more placebo than empirically functional.

[Q] Disappointed with headphone audio output. any fixes?

I know this is the dev section but posting this on the i9000 board will just allow it to get lost and ignored.
I got this phone to replace my old deteriorating samsung d500. i was quite excited to use this as my main music player since i lost my old ipod.
dont get me wrong.the phone is great. but audio volume and quality is really lacking. i thought it was my imagination at first (since i lost my ipod i couldnt compare) but then i tried out my friends iphone 3g (same headphones of course) and iphone audio quality clearly trumps the galaxy sl's.
I tried using an app for users on GB 2.3.4 called "volume +". it does the job of increasing the volume beyond the phones natural limits, but by exceeding the phones max volume by even just a bit causes the music to be distorted no matter what settings i use.only the phones default setting sounds clear (relatively speaking) I listen to flac, not mp3.
Are i9003 owners screwed on this aspect of our phone? I love android and i love this phone, and i dont think spending over 500usd on an iphone with limited functionality albeit great sounding audio is worth it.
I read volume + is an app that renders the audio on a software level while voodoo sound does so on a hardware level (though it relies on certain kernels which are obviously not available on this phone atm)
Also, voodoo sound from what i know will only be effective with a good sound chip (wolfson) found on the original sgs. does anyone know if the sl uses the same chip?
If this phone is really limited this aspect, can anyone recommend an android unit which has excellent headphone output (comparable to apples devices or even better hopefully)?
thanks for your time reading this post
Actually, The sound quality is superb. It is not good on the Stock FW, the FW when you buy the phone. But after the Gingerbread update of XXKPH and the Froyo update of XXKB3, The sound is a charm! WHich FW are you on?

I use Koss portapros which sound exellent on my laptop and ipod.

the phones sound is indeed below par and there is nothing we can do about it.on the other hand it is comparable to the iphone 3gs sound quality so cant complain at all.after all very few phones can compete with dedicated mp3 players.if you want sound quality try going for the phones with wolfson dacs

Yeap, I got most of my music advice from spacebar, And he mentioned that never rely on an app's built in equalizer it's horrible! Get the "Equaliser" app from the market, and adjust the settings to +2db on the first bar and +1db on the 5th bar. That will boost your music needs and also it combines well with poweramp/Miui player.

To be honest i recall the post where you mentioned the equaliser app but I merely shrugged it off as one of those eqs that come with every music player out there.
Now let me tell you how WRONG I was to think that. This app really does the job. other EQs just distort the sound, but this one allows for awesome tweaking/customization. I'm quite happy now listening to music on this phone.
Maraming salamat kapatid (Thank you)
thanks for the tips guys . coming from nokia (5800) , i9003's sound quality was unacceptable to me . with this app its somewhat usable now. although it still lacks the loudness imo
Well loudness can be modified with a volume+ app, that isn't the best I'm aware but it does the job to raise the volume to a certain amount. Equaliser is a free app, But in some term's your custom preset doesn't get saved in the free version, oh well, there are alternatives to the paid anyways.
So far so good, I've noticed that PowerAMP has really good volume output, when combined with Equaliser, it really brings out the perfection that is really intended to be heard. Raw beauty. But in order to get the best of your settings, *If you use PowerAMP, you should disable any pre-existing equalizer settings or boosts, etc, they just lower the volume to a point where the deaf can hear*
As for the Equaliser setting's, Some might be wondering how to you enable the sliders in the EQ app, *Put the widget on your homescreen to make it easier to access, plus it's got a sexy layout*, Press the power button on the top right in EQ app and enable the tick mark's hence giving you the option to expand your listening experience.
Bass Boost - 15%~50% the choice is upto you, there isn't any real distortion and the quality is still superb. I'm a fan of dubstep/electronic music so I tend to love it when heavy bass drops in.
Visualizer - Not more than 5%-7%, I don't usually enable this because it tends to make the audio seem a bit faded off. It's only effective when you own a 7.1 Stereo highclass headset.
Reverb - Usually keep this disabled, But the Plate effect is a nice way to focus on the audio aswell as keep track of the bass.
@sicmofo Your welcome part ! Anytime bro.

Just my feedback but I noticed that the stock music player imo has overall better sound quality and volume compared to poweramp (I'm not a fan of the early 90's-ish stereo ui either). NOTE :- Remove the DSP Manager via Titanium (or similar app) to avoid conflict !!

but beats audio is a pointless app. its just a preset equaliser that emphasises bass and high treble in a simple S curve through the range.
you can get this exact same effect with dsp or poweramp etc. dont waste your time.
in fact most record producers scream at your average Joe for messing with equalisers and would prefer everyone to keep it flat/neutral.
Many producers reference classical music for a good reason when they calibrate recording studios: all the instruments tend to sing in perfect harmony. They all have a clearly defined space within the mix, and if you move away from flat, you will remove certain aspects of the orchestra.
Leave it alone.

It need not be a pointless app. You need to adjust the curve carefully that no distortion occurs. The DSP gave me noises in its default config. adjusted so many times, but couldn't make it clear. Anyways the beats is giving me perfect sound combination now. As you know beats is being promoted by/included in most HTC phones, its worthy testing.
Looks great! I'm about to try.

I am on jokersax CM9 0.8.1 and I uninstalled DSP Manager via titanium backup as recommended prior to flashing the AwesomeBEATS.zip.
AwesomeBEATS constantly FCs while trying to access it through Apollo and well as Google Play Music. Music playback stopped working. Not working with this ROM.
I been included that as an alternative option to DSP manager in the aroma installer for my rom,. beats is great but its meant to be used with headphones and you can tell the difference when its enabled once it senses the jack input..
but this mod is old already, why post a repost?
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/beats-audio-now-available-on-any-gingerbread-rom/
I think Beats is HORRIBLE. Obviously, there's no 'right' way for music to sound. The only thing that would be close to 'right' is if you were using exactly the same device, amp and monitors as were used to master the music in the first place (and even then there's probably variation in different copies of the same equipment) But personally, I like to hear the vocals in my music, rather than just a muddy bassy din and some ear piercing treble. Everybody has their own opinion on these things
Seems a shame to spoil the Atrix's good quality amplification with this tripe though Count yourself lucky you don't have a One X. It has the most terrible headphone output quality of any device I've owned in a long time, and that includes £10 MP3 players.

He is right. I'm a mastering engineer, and I can tell you that eq is only for correcting mistakes; either in the recording/mixing process, or in the reproduction system. You use eq to return the signal to flat. However, unless you know what's wrong with the sound you are probably just making things even worse.
On the other hand, if you like how it sounds, don't let snobs like us dissuade you!
I only hope that you'd try getting used to even response speakers and/or headphones (if such a thing exists). You'll thank us when you realize all parts of the audio spectrum are equally important.
And thank you to the OP for this, even if it is controversial. =)

I don't always click the thanks button, but when I do it's for informative posts like yours. :good:
Audio equalizers are for broadcast stations and recording studios, you're just undoing what they've already done by using your own EQ to mess with the frequencies. It's not a bad thing to do considering everyone has a different impression of what sounds "good". I tend to enjoy my music at slightly higher bass frequencies than flat when using a good subwoofer.
But yeah, equalizers are used to correct mistakes or unwanted audio frequencies which can be produced by recording equipment and to make certain frequencies more prominent (think, if you have a bunch of low pitch instruments and a high pitch singer, you can bring out those higher pitches with equalization).
Keeping your EQ flat means it stays at the recorded and already equalized levels the artists wanted it at.
But like I said, everyone has different opinions.
My only issue with this post, if I was being nitpicky, is that it's in the wrong forum section! I'd suggest having a mod move it Atrix 4G Themes & Apps section, unless we're defining any "Development" thread something you need to install via nandroid, in which case people may start packaging up their own apk bundles and posting them here as rom extensions.
aint that the truth... i agree 100% with the above statement... i feel the same way about that XLoud hack & Bravia Engine Hack... I've done tons of research and testing on my own phone using the libs and codes and strings and door knobs with dental floss and floor lint under my neighbor's car tire during the summer. lol, what I mean is that these hacks are floating around without any real concrete proof to their advantages or benefits whatsoever, yet I still see people add them into roms like it's that extra golden nugget that will extended life expectancy by 25+ years and people still request them because they swear how good the hack\tweak is that they would really wish to have it included in the rom.
The beats audio, if anything, i feel like just raises the mids & highs almost like a guesstimated pre-configured value meant to be like a one size fits all kind of thing.
Personally, I prefer having the option of doing my own corrections through the equalizer whether it's for the worse or better. In the end it's how it good it sounds to the listeners ear and different people hear sounds sometimes far different than others. So what someone might say is perfect, someone else could hear a brain aneurysm building from the noise pollution. But atleast with equalizers like the one with DSP for example, it's nice to be able to adjust and play with the frequencies instead the levels being preconfigured.
I would love to see the comparison of this with the "XLoud" hack to see which one is doing what it'said to be doing and which one is really just a "hack".

Oh wow... I knew there's a reason it's called an "equalizer"!
Yeah, believe it or not, I always wondered why is it called that... Stupid me, never bothered to google though... But at least now I know.

i got this app with custom rom, It doesnt do anything... I mean, anything.
I use note 2, i have Klipsch earphones, so they arent cheap and low quality earphones but Beats app does not do anything.
also I tried this app with Bose Quiet Comfort 15 and still nothing!
Bose 15's got much much better sound quality than beats but app is still useless.
IF i really need to chance EQ, Neutron and Power AMP does the job done.
You can really make your music better or worst with Neutron (Neutron EQ is much detailed) and PowerAmp but Beats does not do anything.
I wish custom roms do not include beats at all...
try it on mt25i

Sound quality

How to know which smartphone gives the best sound output experience one can ever have?
I have so many reviews about a lot of smartphones but I never read something about sound quality.
Do all smart phones share the same soundcard or sth

All HTC's suck. The One XL is alright, with mods
Best is
Nexus S
Galaxy S (original)
Galaxy S 3
Nexus 10
Anything with a tegra 3 is generally rubbish with sound, as they have a crappy DAC. Anything with a Wolfson DAC is good GENERALLY
But Snapdragons are getting better

I really liked the sound of the One X. Galaxy devices have to have some mods to make it sound ok. Once I got my Nexus the sound was awful until I rooted it and flashed some mods. Now it's awesome. Same with every device I ever used or got my hands on. Without mods it's like trying to drive a car with the handbreak on.

Oh, of course you can! I would have died without any DSP-Manager is a MUST-have. The rest differs from which type of phone you have and so on. I use ACID sound engine. It's a mix of a few great sound mods and together with AwesomeBeats it just rocks But it doesn't work on any device. Great on my GNex but e.g. doesn't work on my dad's DHD. But try DSP-Manager, you won't regret it.

Never tried anything on CM7, but I can show you my setup. Bass is really, really high here. That's because my good earphones broke and I have to use the cheap, crappy Samsung ones, that came with my phone. Have to turn the bass up as hell to even hear it. But here you go:
Dynamic Range Compression: OFF
Bass Boost/Beats Boost: EXTREME (I would keep that, no matter which earphones you have - Of course just if you like bass - I do)
Loudness Compensation: Try out from STRONG to STRONGEST (dependend on earphones)
Virtual Room Effect: OFF
My soundcurve is now really disorted because of my cheap earphones but it was always the best for me to do sth in a "u" shape. It can be a very weird "u" like here but it was always the best for me. I'm not an expert though, just telling you my personal experiences.

Can I get it on cm7 ??
and did u flash awesome beats mod??
Sent from my Incredible S using xda app-developers app
Latest DSP-Manager doesn't work on CM7. U need ICS or JB for that. AwesomeBeats is just working on AOSP ROMs. No Sense, no Touchwhiz. And yeah, I'm running AwesomeBeats in combination with ACID sound engine.
The bass is so high because I have very crappy earphones and I have to push the bass up that much to get sth of a normal sound. With better headphones I would do half of the shown or even less. Just try out what's best for you. Usually it's this "u" shape but it's dependent on which earphones you use and what their permormance is.
Earphone soundcurve has generally a "n" shape because they're optimised for middle frequencies.very high and very low ones are weaker. A good sound should be more or less flat so that you can hear what the studio wanted the music to sound like. Using a "u" shape equalizer compensate the n shape of the earphone. Then as said before some very cheap earphones lack of bass frequencies, particularly the small ones. However the tendency for today's headphones is more to have too much bass. You'll have to edit your curve depending on your headphones and also depending on your tastes and music style. You probably won't put so much bass to listen to jazz as to listen to dubstep.

It's just really dependend on your earphones. If I had set an "n" shape for my old good earphones it would have sounded very weird. I guess every pair handles the sound in an other way so you really gotta try what's the best.

Ah, now I get it You're right. That should be the reason why a u shape is usually the best. On my 2nd broken pair (Sony) I have to push the mids a bit more than the highs. So again, dependend on earphones. On my beats I had to push the highs a lot and the bass just a little. And with my crappy Samsung pair it's like in my post before. Sound is still not that good, though. Just barely can hear any traces of a bass guitar:/

[Q] Beats audio sound quality question

I'm considering picking up this phone and I've seen quite a few claims that if you disabling Beats will "replace the beats profile with one that reduces audio quality" instead.
Anyone confirm/deny this? If it's true, does it make a large difference? Are there any ways (Custom ROM, kernel, etc..) that fixes this problem?
PLEASE NOTE: I do not want comments on how the beats audio sounds better than anything else - I want comments on if turning it OFF will degrade the sound quality as some people claim.
It sounds better with beats audio but it sounds great with it off as well.

Sounds better is subjective. WHY does it sound better? Explain!
With my taste in music I want a "bright" sound with pretty controlled and laid back bass. I do consider myself quite enthusiastic about good sound quality and honestly, afaik Beats sounds, to me, the entire opposite of what I think is good sound quality.
Anyone can explain to me how the sound quality compares to any other phone they've used?
imho, it seems just making the volume louder, but cannot hear much difference... would anyone advise me if there is some kind of settings/ EQ etc? I can't find that... thanks

AFAIK Beat is an active equaliser, meaning that it adjusts to the audio input so that the output isn't distorted and sounds as good as it can on a software level, sure you can create sound like this with an EQ, but then you may have to create sound profiles for ever genre rather than just playing it, but for the record it creates better sound quality which is consistent with all music types that i've tried it with. (magic )
Bass is stronger, delivering a crisper yet softer bass as opposed to a punchy crackle which you'll find on other handsets, trebles are fair and i've heard much louder but in terms of actual clarity it's right up there with the best, mid levels are decent too, so if you want a treble sounding phone then this isn't for you, but for everything else and for the whole package this is where it's at.
I'm referring to the sound that the phone itself delivers, if you were to couple this with a decent set of headphones (i got a pair of solo beats for free with my phone from carphone warehouse, i think they've sold out now) the sound is phenomenal, for picking up and playing a song it is second to none, not the galaxy s4 nor any of the other top of the range handsets can compare to it, the reason for this is because HTC has obviously done it's homework for the audio part of the system and used it as a major selling point.
I'm by no means a music enthusiast but i love them and several of my friends who are music enthusiasts (some producers and DJ's) have said that the sound is superb, obviously not as good as a studio but lets not forget that this is a phone that we're talking about here and for what it is it won't be beaten.

That's exactly what I do not want when using my Sennheiser headphones.
Boosting the bass gives a sound signature I really do not like too much. I want it to be balanced and rather a bit laid back as opposed to strong and, imo, overpowering. Bright and detailed with a wide soundstage is more my cup of tea.
---
Can I remind you all that my question isn't about how the beats profile sounds like but just if the sound quality does noticeably degrade (even compared to other phones) when you DISABLE it?

Sounds like your already dead set against it, why don't you go down to a shop with your headphones and try it out, sorry but I'm not going to delve Into how I feel about the sound quality anymore, this thread and your responses are about as predantic as it gets. None of these replies have answered my question about it though. so let me rephase:
I've seen several reviews claim that this phone use 2 different profiles for Beats audio;
1. The ON profile which activates the "enhancement"
2. The OFF profile which, rather than just deactivating beats audio, will reduce the sound quality below that of what the DAC is capable of.
Now may I have any comments relevant to this question (rather than just saying the sound quality of this phone is good or bad).
Also, not all stores here allow you to try out the phones like so unfortunately.
EDIT: Thanks to the LinusTechTips forum I found this video which pretty much explains what I've been saying: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdbn_pmxFic

I think it's much clearer, and s bit louder. But clearer. I used to have an HTC sensation, where in the middle of your video or music you had a toggle to turn off Beats. And trust me, there is a difference. I even record university lectures on it, and beats tunes out the background noise and boosts that of the speaker. It does wonders . But you can always get the phone and turn off Beats and download an equalizer from the pay store.

We're missing a critical piece of information from you : do you primarily listen through the phone's speakers or use headphones? Given that you don't seem to have a One yet (and thus have normal phone speakers which are pretty terrible ) you probably use headphones. The reason this is critical (and why the whole situation is kind of irrelevant) is because when using the phone speakers turning the enhancement off does make it sound worse IMO. However, if you're using headphones, turning it off makes it sound better assuming you have a decent pair of course. I don't know if you're like me and prefer a natural base level over an artificially high one, but if you are then you can just turn off beats and let the headphones do the work and it will sound just as good as using any other portable audio player out there. See why it's all irrelevant now? You can turn it on to use it when it's good and off when it's not, and if you personally feel that it's never good, then you can just turn it off and rely only on the hardware which is just as good as any other portable source.
So take home points (I'll keep them simple and clear) :
1. Yes it sounds worse if you turn off beats when using the phone's speakers.
2. It does sound better to those looking for a more natural sound profile to turn off beats when using a pair of quality headphones.
3. Turning off beats does not seem to activate an "intentionally low quality profile." That wouldn't make any sense, it's just a tweaked equalizer...

Thanks for a good and detailed response - This is the kind of reply I was looking for!
Also. good to see an opinion from someone that seemingly have a similar taste in sound signature as I do.
Yep I'm thinking of the headphone performance indeed, speakers I usually don't care too much about, I can see why they seemingly optimized the speakers for use with the beats turned on.
Another thing to mention, I'm coming from the Galaxy Nexus which has a rather decent DAC. Nothing spectacular but decent enough. If you have any comments on the SQ difference between the One and the Gnex or any similar devices, do post them.

Happy to help!
For practicality reasons I too usually use headphones. I'm sorry I've never had a galaxy line phone to compare to. But if you think about it theoretically, you're going to be playing mp3 files in all likelihood. Hopefully they're 320kbps at least, but still mp3s. At this level of listening comparing one source to another is pretty difficult I think; there's just too much compression already. Which is why I think contrasting portable audio source quality is a moot point, it depends more on the headphones. But fortunately you need to get up into the thousands of dollars in equipment to decern the finer details anyway.

Actually most of my collection is ripped in flac ^^
My setup at home is a far better source than any phone can produce, not super high end but still a good setup.
Nonetheless, I care for having a decent enough audio source from my phone as a large portion of my music listening is when away from home and I don't want to carry a ton of portable equipment and media players when I can have it all done from my phone.

[MOD][APP][HOW-TO][Headsets] Guide to get a really good sound from Xperia T (&TX&V)

[MOD][APP][HOW-TO][Headsets] Guide to get a really good sound from Xperia T (&TX&V)
The audio listening experience is somewhat subjective and I do not claim to give the universal thruth here, just guidelines that could help you to get a better sound from your device.
Since I bought my Xperia T (about 1 year ago), I have constantly been trying to improve the sound that I get from my device and presently I can say that I'm rather happy. I've tested tons of mods, apps, headsets and it's not so easy to do the good choice...
1. The player
I've been using poweramp for a while. This is a good player but since the JB update I could no longer use it because of frequent scratching noises. Moreover, I find that the sound of poweramp is too artificially dynamic.
Actually, only the Sony stock walkman player is good for me, i.e. bug-free. I don't use the lastest versions of Walkman for JB 4.2 ported to JB 4.1.2 that you can find in this forum section because of various issues (few scratching, volume jumps).
So, let's go for the stock player
2. Sound enhancement (equalizer, effects...)
The stock Sony sound enhancement (musicFX) is rather bad to my taste. It has a huge lack of clarity and spoils the bass.
The first thing to do is to flash PureXAudioLITE of @ZeroInfinity. This mod is system wide and should be compatible with any equalizers or sound enhancements. Then, you will notice a gain of clarity, better bass and treeble.
Secondly, let's change of equalizer (the "Clearbass" bass booster of Sony is a disaster). The best to my taste is Equalizer from playstore. It's a very good 5-bands equalizer + bass booster (+ virtualization) fully compliant with Walkman.
Take the time to tune fine Equalizer, it's difficult for non-audiophiles, but it's worth the effort. Regarding the bass booster, it might be not work the very first time you activate it : so stop the music, close the walkman and start it up again. Keep your ears open to hear its effect, it act on very low frequencies (20-50 Hz). The virtualizer effect is interesting, it can give relief to the sound.

If you like Equalizer, you may buy its unlock key (1.49 €) and then you will be abble to save your different EQ settings and even to save them as home-screen shorcuts :good:
The sound is now much clearer, isn't it ?
Moreover, it will stay active when you watch videos!!
3. The headset
The stock Sony headset is not that bad. But from Sony you can get much better for relatively cheap : MH1C. It is fully compliant with latest Xperia devices, it has an extremely wide banwidth, with perhaps a little lack of bass, but this can easily compansated adjusting the bass booster.
Regarding "on ear" headphones, I've bought the Phillips Fidelio M1. It is not cheap but sounds extremely fine and I think it is the only Hifi headphone having a low impedance of 16 ohms (same as the stock headset, if you chose a headphone with a too high impedance you won't be abble to adjust the volume up to descent levels...).
That's done. I hope it will help...
Nothing about "Honami" in my thread. Yet interesting
Good description!) Is PureX compatible with our devices? I have TX.

Thank you. You know I cant find perfect mod for me. I cant hear BIG difference between stock and mods. I also tried AC!D mod. Yes, the sound is maybe better, but... I actually use my smartphone with Sony-MDR XB600 and I always coming back to the stock enhacements

Yes, most mods promise so much but actually do nothing good.
Flash PureXAudioLite, it will be for sure a little better.
Then, try Equalizer and take your time to test it, maybe will it be to your taste... (and test the virtualizer effect, it can give relief to the sound).
i will try on my T, thanks bro

just give your comment to this mod instead of something else.. this is not really helping anybody.
or atleast give arguments with your comment..
question to TS:
i flashed the mod and it seems to be working because EQ scale is changed and i can hear some difference.
one thing though, in the installation video of the mod you can see that there are two new options in sony walkman EQ presets. but i don't have them, maybe that's normal with the universal lite version but just checking.

Maybe no better to your taste, good for you! Personnaly, I find it sounds really too artificial with tons of options that change the sound but not necessarily in a better way. Moreover, it causes scratching noises on my device and drains battery very quickly.

Yes, no option with the lite version, it just changes audio libs. It changes EQ scale (more bass and treeble) and I've noticed a improvement of sound clarity.

Does not sound great at all for me, why ?? As I said "the audio listening experience is somewhat subjective" (1st sentence of my thread). So, your opinion is welcome, but please do not say "It's the best".
From an objective point of view, Viper4Android is essentially a convoler. It's for sure a great technology to produce audio effects. But if your goal is to be as close as possible to the original sound of all your music files, I'm not sure that's the best tool.
Anyway, I don't believe in an universal tool to restore quality of degraded audio files, what is lost is lost. Be aware that in a 128 kbps mp3, the loss is actually very tiny.

Hey.. Viper4Android doesn't equal Viper4Android.. There are differences!
There is the FX version (with convoler and all that stuff), which really sounds extremely unnatural.. And there is xHiFi.. Developed with the purpose to restore low contour and high clarity. And enabling it makes indeed a noticeable difference in clarity... Which is in my opinion natural. (in my~ opinion. ^^)
But you're right, audio listening experience is indeed subjective.
I have heard.. That there are even people out there that are happy without an equalizer! :cyclops:

Yes
That beeing said, a sound enhancement with just 2 buttons (bass and treeble) would be useful for audio noobs. Tuning properly an equalizer is not so easy.

Right. However, if you think Viper only has two buttons you're.. Pretty wrong. ^^
Anyways, want to give me some tips about effective audio tuning with an equalizer ?

No no, I do know that Viper has an equalizer (although not very ergonomic ). I was just thinking that Sony could provide treeble and bass buttons as an alternative of the equalizer for audio noobs.
Regarding tuning an equalizer, I just tuning it listening to some of my favourite audio files that cover the full frequency range. Then, I trust my ears. It can last several days for me to tune it fine.
