Galaxy 8.9 (ICS update) vs Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 General

I have both and after the ics update the 8.9 is almost better, if it had Google Now it would be the better device for me because of the form factor. The 8.9 is smoother than the Nexus 7 now in my experience, Chrome works much better and for some reason the resolution seems sharper with ICS.

You can improve the resolution of the ui of your Nexus 7 by changing the ui density see this :

However I see what you're saying, but didn't he kind of answer one of your quesstions? Ultimately, is this a thread asking for our opinions or something? Because it seems you have made up your mind already, minus the Google Now you seem to be more drawn to the Galaxy Tab.

It might just seem sharper based on the type of screen each is made with. The resolutions in each are almost identical. For me the Nexus 7 form factor is absolutely perfect. If you prefer the 8.9 then I say go for it.

Touchwiz ICS smoother than AOSP Jellybean 4.1.1? I gotta see this before i believe it.

I am serious that Touchwiz ISC on my Galaxy 8.9 is smoother than Jellybean on my Nexus 7. I have no idea why but I've compared this for 2 days now.

I loved the 8.9 but the Tegra 2 stinks. I feel skeptical of the speed claims too, but awesome for you either way.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2

You must have gotten one magical 8.9... Updated my wife's last night and it is not near as fast as the n7, even after a factory reset.

Tegra 2 is a flop though. I wouldn't buy it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

It's too bad they probably want refresh it, hell the Tab 2 still has a Tegra 2 doesn't it, because I think it's one if their best designs.

we had a kindle. Lovely device... until the nexus came out.
You can't even utilize things like Google voice, maps with gps etc.
But I guess that still counts. I would never put the kindle in the same category as these devices though. We had one until 2 days ago. It sold within 10 minutes, which was $135

You're gonna love the nexus 7 if you are coming from the kindle. Like I said, we are coming from a fire, and it's night and day. Maybe if I rooted the kf, it would have been closer. But I don't like to root devices my other half is using. I only root the stuff I use.

guys, quick little update. I shut off the live wallpaper on the xoom, and it's considerably faster now. Still not 'just like nexus 7' but much much smoother. I'm gonna make another video now and you guys will see the improvement in smoothness and performance. FWIW, I also went from 110 to 111 nightly.

I was going to say... you kind of crippled the Xoom having the wallpaper up. While the n7 was made for jellybean I think its more a product of having such newer hardware in the n7 compared to the Xoom. You have faster memory, quad core, and a more powerful GPU on the n7. Even though PPI settings are set higher for the n7, effectively you have less going on, less screen real estate etc for the same or similar resolution. I'd like to see the build.prop edited on the Xoom the same as the n7 if it could be displayed without crashing with everything possible configured the same. I think you are still going to see the fact that the n7 is a generation newer processor wise will still beat out the Xoom.
On the other hand, it still looks pretty nice on the Xoom. Jb breathes new life into dual core devices!

As he correctly points out in the video, he's using a custom hacked together ROM on the Xoom vs. a stable ROM on the Nexus 7. What he doesn't mention is that the Xoom ROM is a port. It's not compiled from source...it can't be. Google hasn't dropped the Xoom source code for JB into AOSP yet.
Let's compare this again when the Xoom actually has source code available and someone compiles a raw AOSP ROM for it, thus we can compare apples to apples.

you think Google builds aosp source code for every device? your smokin!
hash code built jellybean from SOURCE and created the device tree, added necessary drives, and compiled. far from a port, I would only assume the same was done for the Xoom. a port? cmon!

OK you're right, I stand corrected. You can probably build for the wingray and stringray out of what's there now, but there are still no binaries for JB for either the Xoom or Nexus S. I'd imagine things will still run better once that stuff is available, particularly updated graphics drivers.

Changing GT8.9

I just love my 8.9, definitily because screen size, but after decades waiting ICS I gave up, its time to change, JB is not a reality in Sammy devices so I thing ICS is ok, but my question is, what is the best option, I saw any detail in gsmarena and 7.7 looks like the best choice, all spec better instead of screen

Rooting and flashing JB on your tablet is your best option. Only thing you won't have is your camera.
Sent from My Beastâ„¢
I think custom Rom is a great job, but I use my tablet camera a lot, even being a 3M, the best option would be a Sammy Rom, 7.7 super amoled and 196ppi looks good, 1.4G exynos too, would be anwsome a GT8.9 with these spec.
Sent from my GT-P7300 using xda app-developers app
Any tablet with a Super AMOLED screen would be awesome, but it would also be bloody expensive.
Come on, man! You have waited until now, and when ics is on its way, you give up.
btw, 7.7 is small. If you have a decently sized smartphone, the 7.7 is too small for a tablet . That's why 8.9 is great, because it's the perfect size.
Anyway, this is all your choice.
You are perfect right, 8.9 is the perfect size, I really dont understand why it is unique, Xoom 8.2 looks like very good
but I heard something about a poor battery time.
Sent from my GT-P7300 using xda app-developers app
So, you don't have many options: Keep the galaxy tab 8.9 (these days we are getting ICS), buy the galaxy tab 7.7(too small), buy the xoom 8.2 media edition(very good tablet, very good battery life), wait for the ipad mini (don't kill me) or head to the 7-inchers.
If I helped, press thanks, it means very much for a newbie.
Yeah I'm still waiting on ICS (mainly so somebody can port JB with the camera, HDMI out etc. drivers) because the size of the tab is just right. I find the 10" tabs just that tiny bit too big and the 7"s, while great as e-readers, sometimes I just think "It's too small for web browsing without zooming so I might as well use my phone", this is particularly true for people with a Galaxy Note.
I believe ICS on our device is due this month (all the other tabs have gotten it so ours is next on the list), so not long now, and if you are able to flash custom ROMs, somebody's likely going to grab the drivers from Sammy's ICS and use them to complete a JB rom.
8.9 is the perfect size for a tab. But much needed updates are screwed up by Sammy. Also no ext sd card slot is a pain. Otherwise perfect. 7.7 is a tad smaller & pricey. Wait till ics gets out & we will have some good custom roms to play with. Also the camera drivers for cm9 cm10 also will get sorted out.

As a reader of Linus Statement if you open my chest you will find a linux disk inside rs..., so ipad (at any size) would be not a possibility, but I liked to know xoom batt has a good performance, I read opposite in many places, so I'll dream about a galaxy note 8.9 (its free )
Sent from my GT-P7300 using xda app-developers app
If Sammy 8.9 had Exynos chipset, faster firmware updates, Amoled screen and SD card slot it would be the best tablet. I hope they come out with galaxy tab 2 8.9 with quad core CPU, S Pen, a little bigger battery and full hd screen, because tab 2 10.1 is worse than the old 10.1 and tab 2 7.0 is worse than 7.0 plus.

Do you think that Apples lawsuits will compromise Samsung willingness to produce our dream?
For now I'll be fine with my 8,9 but the note 10,1 is on my wishlist for christmas
As said earlier 8,9" is a nice and practical size. A note 10,1" is a little to big for being on the move but will do fine until a SGT 8,9 II comes around.
Now back to testing the new official ICS!
I'm not quitting my 8.9 but I must admit that I'm disappointed with the late update for ICS... I can only imagine that will be no chance for us to get an official JB.
I gave up. Christimas is near and galaxy note 10.1 will be my next toy. 8.9 (my first love) will be my second tablet only for custom roms

I find more pauses and hitches on the 8.9 ui than on the nexus 7. It's a major improvement over hc but there's no doubt the 7 benefits from the newer processor. I have a 7 plus that seems smoother than the 8.9 but is showing some WiFi issues after the ics update.
What I love about the 8.9 is the screen size. I use it when I want the extra screen size which is often. So far the update seems to be a solid improvement...

What phone compliments the nexus 7

Currently using an iPhone 4s alongside my nexus 7, OK its nice to have best of both world type devices, but I would like to use my nexus to be able to use mighty text type apps so I think its time to grab another android phone, got an option locally a guy wants to swap his galaxy note, but I'm thinking this is pretty close in size, what would you recommend?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Galaxy Nexus all the way. The Nexus 4 is too fragile and not worth the hassle in my opinion. Sure it has a quad core processor and 2Gb of RAM, but honestly.. who uses that on a phone.
I would recommend the HTC One X, but seriously... After some of the stuff HTC have been doing nowadays, I struggle to recommend HTC.
I have an original GNote and can't imagine having any thing else. There is a bigger difference in size then you would think.
And remember "When you go Note, 4 inches is a joke".

I am finding N4 compliments N7 greatly. Basically you get some great raw power on both devices, but the tegra in the N7 give way for different, but complimentary usage. Tegra exclusive games run with great power, while N4 runs non tegra with even greater power.
Maybe it was a design decision so that both devices have equal usage. XD
Well screen size is also a factor. I am not so interested in watching video on the N4. Still I find myself using both devices at once a lot. N7 definitely being the couch/bed lazy movie viewing device.

We're using a lot of these at my work. They only have 1024 x 600 resolution, that's the same as the original Galaxy tab and only 169 ppi, the Nexus 7 323 ppi.
Then there's the Marvell dual-core cpu which is basically a low grade cpu.
Basically, you bought an entry level tablet which has a lower resolution than the tab 8.9 has, and a camera without flash which is also only 3 mp and is the worst camera I've seen since my trust webcam 8 years ago.
Don't take my word for it, read any review like this one http://www.trustedreviews.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-3-7-0_Tablet_review#tr-review-summary
Even the older nexus 7 is a far far better deal than the tab 3 which was only released to suck people's wallet dry.

Im also thinking of selling my tablet. It is in very good condition. Not a single scratch. But just too ffreaking slow and hate touchwiz now. And no updates. Samsung abondoned the tablet too quick.
Wondering which tablet to buy next.
What would be a good replacement for the Galaxy Tab 8.9. I do not know another tablet with the same display size and landscape format?

If you're partial to 8.9 inch screens (as I am), then there aren't any good replacements right now, though the recently announced AMazon Fire HDX 8.9 looks good on paper (if you've okay with being tied to amazon world)
Otherwise, I think the best bet is to wait for the next nexus 10. Hopefully, it'll weigh less than a pound, making it as light as our 8.9s. Personally 7 inch tablets (even 8 inch ones) seem crammed to me.

Seems like a successor to the GT 8.9 has finally come. The new GT Pro 8.4 unveiled yesterday. What do you guys think ?
Nice specs.
8.4-inch display with WQXGA resolution (2560 x 1600)
Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz quad-core CPU
2GB RAM
16GB/32GB
8-megapixel camera
2-megapixel front-facing camera
4800mAh
Android 4.4 KitKat
Fine size. Might be a bit expensive. Think I will wait and consider the next 10' Nexus first. Less bloatware and faster upgrades. I like my p7320 now that it has CM. Faster than stock 4.0.4, more settings, no freezes

I think that it's not bad but not optimal either.
First of all screen size is not optimal for me, I think 8.9 is the best fit, not a bigger one but not a smaller one too, and 8.4 is enough smaller. Maybe 8.7 would be barely sustainable as substitute for my optimal 8.9.
Second, subpixel matrix is the usual sh1tty pentile. Samsung seems as usual unable (or unwilling) to shrink subpixel over a certain extent, no matter if amoled or tft, therefore offering this ridiculous subpixel arrangement. I don't care of what they say, given a certain resolution the image quality is always worse with pentile. So I never consider any device of any resolution/ppi that doesn't sport 3 subpixel (full rgb) matrix.
Third, I don't like form factor, I know that Samsung needs to follow Apple design to sell millions of devices, and now 8.4 design is resembling ipad mini 2, but it can only push me toward other solutions. I don't like Apple and its design, so I won't like any design similar to Apple's. I still prefer tablet form factor over the phablet one.

The best substitute for my 8.9 would exactly be Amazon hdx 8.9, snapdragon 800 and 2560 FULLRGB and not pentile crap. Unfortunately atm there's no way to install a custom rom, so it cannot be a choice for me. Anyway I'm constantly following development there, eager to see a daily drivable cm on it, then I'll buy it.
What do you people think about the LG G Pad 8.3 - especially considering there is a Google Play Edition version and there is active CM11 development on it?
