Does Facebook app show everything in a narrow center column? - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

Ever since v1.9.3 or 1.9.4 (can't remember), the Facebook app shows everything in a narrow column down the center of the screen, and photos are cropped so you only see the left side. There are a few bad reviews on the Play store that mention this issue. I posted a thread in the general section about this, but someone replied he doesn't have the issue with another tablet. I wonder if it's an issue with touchwiz and facebook. I had the issue before and after the ICS update. I've tried clearing data, as we as uninstalling and reinstalling. Only thing I haven't tried is backing up to a side-loaded older version.

U can only see the full pictures without cropping in the portrait view just force close facebook app and open it again in the portrait position

I'll give that a shot. It used to work in landscape, where pictures would take the entire width. I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue with just the tab 8.9, any samsung tabs, or all android tablets. Comments in my other thread would make it seem that it's not a problem on all android tablets. It's like the code to size the pictures uses the full width, then some other code that formats the columns, just uses some max width, which ends up cropping photos. In addition to that, the Facebook app on the Gtab also doesn't show the new timeline with cover photo, where the same facebook app version on my phone does.

Notifications.
Also, you're reply doesn't help me narrow down if the problem is the app itself, or an issue with the app only on the 8.9.

The pictures are still cropped when I do this, just seemingly by not as much (since the slim center column is closer to the width of the screen in portrait.

Here's the email I sent to FB on Jul 13
Just updated to 1.9.7 on my Galaxy Tab 8.9. The center column and cropped picture issue is still here. Please fix this soon. It worked just fine several versions ago, I think somewhere around 1.9.0 or so.

I have tried every version from 1.8.3 up till the latest, and they all have the problem. So, that means one of these things are the cause:
1. The Tab 8.9 has issues with Facebook (not likely at all, since the problem showed up after an update to Facebook)
2. The FB app has issues with TouchWiz tablets (plausible perhaps, but also not likely. only have an 8.9, so can't verify)
3. The FB app had some server side change, since all the older versions that used to work just fine, show the same problem (most likely to me)
But, I don't have any other tablet to test with, and from my other thread, people didn't seem to indicate that they had the problem.
I really hope the rumored Android app rewrite fixes this sorry excuse for an app.
I guess for the time being, I'll leave it on for the notifications, and just use the web page till then. Not ideal. SMH

Any other good app for FB ?

I have the same problem on my Xoom and I believe it is the same on all Android tablets. Very annoying.
If it was same on ipad it would have been fixed the same day.
PS Android version on tablets doesn't make any difference HC, ICS, JB I tried them all Fb has the same issue on all of them.

Thanks for the input. Really hard to believe FB doesn't have the funds available to buy a single Android tablet to test their app on. What's more puzzling is that it probably is just a wrapper for the web page. I dont' understand why the same version on my ICS phone shows the timeline/coverphoto page for someone, but on my ICS tablet, it shows some watered down page and only in a center column.

And, in my experience, on tablet its impossible to switch from wall view to info view, so you can't lookup phone numbers , email, etc

Not only that but photos are cropped when shared in a group or on a wall. So annoying.
It does this on the 10.1 Tab as well. I was disappointed to discover it does this also on my new 8.9 LTE . SO ANnoyed....and disappointed really.

Looks like the 2.0 update for Facebook has finally fixed this issue.

will froyo fix the display resolution?

so i was searching for some nexus one display resolution tests and found one.
http://displaymate.com/Nexus_One_ShootOut.htm
to my surprise, the nexus one's display / screen performed badly compared to the iPhone 3GS and the Droid.
so i'm wondering if the new froyo update will address some of these issues?
can anyone on froyo comment on this?
The images should look better on froyo.

Please dont dig up old non-issues. This article is so wrong its almost like the anti-google squad paid for it.
This was discussed in Jan/Feb and it was proven that the contouring/noise was due to the gallery (and browser) app, the display h/w is fine and the image displays perfectly on other third party apps.
Well I dled dolphin browser and unfortunately I can see the so called bandings from the Mars picture. Used astro viewer and show the same bandings.

try B&B gallery, its fixed in the froyo browser (banding now only visible when scrolling)
well i guess that was a good 99cents spent. no more bandings for that picture. so i guess hopefully froyo addresses these issues.

Google Currents - another killer app

I live in Canada so can't download Currents from the Market, but you can easily find an .apk with a quick Google search.
Currents is exactly the killer app I was looking for to read my Reader streams. I love Flipboard on the iPad and this is its equivalent for Android tablets. It's extremely smooth and looks awesome on the GT 7.7.
This makes all the difference!!!
I agree currents is a pretty great app. It seems a little aggressive on the data and battery use but that can be manually stopped. It can make almost any article based site look good and the sites that have custom made currents look great.

I have it set-up for 6-hour intervals. My GT is WiFi only but I left it on all day (sporadic use to be honest) with syncing Email/Calendar, Twitter, FB in background (as well as Currents...) and it only consumed 25% in over 10 hours.
i couldn't agree more. one of the few apps on my homescreen!
Now we're talking!
Superb app! Marvellous to encounter a slick purpose built tablet app, and looks phenomenal on the 7.7.
Guaranteed recipe to wow your mates - 7.7 + Currents + 500px. Job done.
My only issue with google currents is the "500px magazine" (photos). When you click on one of the photos, then swiping to next/previous photo is not responsive at all most probably is because it waits for the next/previous photo to be loaded
Hey, do you get the pictures of + 500px in G. Currents in full screen? I can only see them in the upper left corner, about 50% size of the screen ...
Google Currents Bug
I seem to have an issue, which no one else mentioned here (or anywhere else on the web yet). I used Google Currents on Asus Transformer with no problems, but same app on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 does not display the articles properly, there is a overlapping column on the right side (as seen on the picture). I have tried all the possible settings, small/medium/large font...the problem remains. Does anyone have any idea what could be the cause and solution??? Thanks in advance!!!
I find Feedly better to be honest.

did you change your lcd density?
I have the same issue with columns all messed up. I'm running rooted stock without density change.
Then again ; I live in Switzerland where Currents is not available so I got it through Market Enabler. Don't know if that could create the issue.

Instead of sarcasm you might try starting a thread about your issue.
Sent from my GT-P6810 using XDA Premium App
Ok, resolved. The density needed to be changed. You can achieved that with a free app from android market. Btw, no sarcasm in my previous post whatsoever. I guess computercommunication makes people a tad paranoid.
Uh... changing density is hardly a solution. I mean sure one can do that, but the app itself should support different resolution/size/density to be considered a "killer app" !
What I really don't get is how people have it working without changing density as I haven't.

Instagram

Well, we got Instagram today. Not to say I'm a fan of it, as I appreciate photography and would rather manually set my camera than "rape" a photo with a phone app, but it's still something nice to have. Running AOKP though, I have noticed that it doesn't support portrait viewing, just landscape with the keyboard out and landscape 180* when it should be in portrait. Ideas?
I think that either the rom or the app has a few bugs in it

Seems a Cornerstone build would be the only way out...which is unlikely.
I'm fully aware this would probably be quite difficult to port, and likely quite time consuming.
Having said that, I also want this. It makes so much more sense on a 7 inch tablet then a 5 inch whatever.
This works with a handful of Google Apps, no other apps. I don't see the point.

Running 2 apps at the same time. Seems like a great idea to me. It supports a limited amount of apps, but unlike Galaxy Note 10.1, you could probably hack in other apps to work.

Yes, but the Galaxy Note 2 supports all apps in multi-window mode...
This would be *nice* to have but I don't know how much easier it would be then to just multitasking between 2 apps now and having the apps full screen. I can see some of the benefits like watching a youtube video while chatting on Google Talk. There are some good alternatives such as popup video players and notepads that overlay on top of current app and typically are resizable and movable.
While it makes sense this would be better on a 7" then a 5"... it really would be best on a 10". 7" barely gives me enough breathing room for 1 app. Plus most of the "compatible apps" are simple things like a calculator and notes
Well it seems VERY useful to me.
It's better than popup apps in my opinion - more app options.
Overscreen browser is a great alternative for now
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
No, it's not.
This allows multiple apps to run side by side, Overskreen is just the browser. Also, it's not even compatible with Jelly Bean, so no one who owns a Nexus 7 can use it.

No, as I said, handful of specific Google apps. Read up on it. Will the list grow? Maybe? I'd have to guess it is a sdk used to support the function, is it worth app dev time to do it and possibly maintain multiple versions of their app?
more then google apps
Not just google apps can do this on the samsung note 10.1 .
samsng snote and lecture app
browser
vidoe player
picture gallery
polaris office
Photo shop (special note version)
I think there a few others that are on the samsung web app store. Samsung sbe adding apps to this.
Now for the bubble burst. The reason they work on the galaxy note is the new QUAD Core cpu and 2 GB Very fast ram .. samsung tried to release a less ram/power version of the 10.1 note with a higer res display. they backed the display down and increased the cpu//ram. this is also to support the WACOM S PEN..
I have been reading alot about the device because mine will be here Monday. So the above if from my reading and research. I can update you more mid next week.. I do not see a need for split windows on a 7 inch screen .. get the overscreen browser and try it.. JUST Does not work for productive work...
Hope this help make it more understandable... too bad samsung did not make the n7 . i give up because of the screen issues sent two of them back and will NOT order a 3rd...
Dude. Overskreen DOES NOT work on Jelly Bean. And it is just one app, vs an entire suite of Google Apps.
Also there's no need for window management.
Nexus 7 has a quad-core processor too, just less RAM - which isn't even a problem, it still can handle side by side apps.
And you're telling some weird stuff here. We are talking about Galaxy Note 2, which allows more apps, and works better. AND it works on a 5 inch screen, so it'll be awesome on a seven inch.
So yeah, please don't come back with your 'research' to tell us that you think that this feature is unnecessary.
i hope sincerely as a dev can make a mod for port this feature in future beacause it's very usefull even if work only with google apps it's better ,
anyone know if a moded youtube apps existing for play a video on background because i search since 3 month but not find ?
thx
I don't think there is one, sadly. Android doesn't support true multitasking
While i would love to have or port this it simply isnt possible, it requires a lot of changing to the frameworks and it would be hard to decompile all of samsungs sources and extract it.

Stock android not, but there are a few roms with cornerstone, i think mainly on 10 inch tablets.

For me: embedded YouTube videos run much better in the browser than before... They were unwatchable in 4.3.

The smart dialer is by far the best feature.

Actually, with regards to embedded videos, it does not seem to work anymore for those that I have in my Pocket articles.
Just a "Couldn't load plug-in" error message.
But other than that, i think the new dialer does mirror my usage style of not keying in numbers all the time, but just that few contacts. nice feature there.
1 - ART. That makes me keep my Nexus 4 and now only waiting for Nexus 6 next year
2 - The new dialer. A think Google got a point here.

Yes but you're not going to like it. Uninstall Google Search completely from your device, then install the AOSP launcher from CM11 rom, it's the same as Google launcher without the Google Now integration. It doesn't gone an extra row for home screen either, but it does show more apps in the drawer.

Yes the dialer has been my main frustration for a long time, having no t9 support. When it did, the limited display of 3 contacts with only name + number was somewhat dissapointing, especially since htc implemented that feature from day one it seemed.
I do miss the opportunity to switch functions using a swipe though (the dialer pad button is a little hard to press wile on a bicycle ), but overall I think it's a huge improvement, especially with the mentioned bonus point that it identifies numbers from businesses that are not in my contacts!
I like how Google didn't give us transparency on stock /s
I would say the new dialer and music lock screen are my favorites so far
