Note 2 Only Supports 4 Icons in Rows - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note

Look at these official photos from cnet..... Pay particular attention to photos 2 and 15.... Although there are 5-icons in the dock at the bottom, the rest of the screen only has 4 app icons across each row.... Makes me glad I didn't wait to get the Note 2: http://m.cnet.com/photos/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-debuts-photos/10013559

That's launcher dependent only. Download another launcher and you'll be able to have 5 rows of icons again. But yeah, it's stupid they went back to the default 4 rows on the Note 2. Guess that's the price to pay for a True HD display...

Yah but the extra RAM and better processor will make you want to get the note. And if the note 2 is as sexy as the S3...youre definitely gonna wish you waited for the Note 2.
And btw, you can always root and install a tweaked version of the launcher.

... Your complaing about rows of icons? Thats like complaining about a new car saying you dont like the song the radio is playing... Change it... your on xda man. Most people here tend to switch roms and kernals, changing a launcher or even less (a launcher setting) is a non issue

Lord.... I wasn't complaining about the Note 2..... I was merely pointing out the screen is probably too narrow to natively support 5-icon rows..... I totally understand we are of course, free to install various ROMs on our devices... Heck, I had an old HD2 that I tried out more ROMs on than I can remember.... But as my daily driver phone..... I really prefer not to void it's factory warranty

Settings ; Launcher Settings ; Screen preferences (different title depending on which launcher) ; Number of rows.
No warranty voiding required at least 5 free top launchers have this option in the play store. I cant wait for this phone in the us
From my X2 roaming the north

Although I have tried out several 3rd party launchers in the past, I've always found they slow down things a bit (unless you can natively disable the original launcher without rooting the device)... Otherwise you're running a launcher on top of another launcher
Sent from my GT-P3113 using xda premium

I guess i just root and take care of all those issues, but then again with 2gb of ram im betting you could handle 2 launchers if you for some reason dont just replace the old one.

Nexus 7 For The Elderly

An elderly relative of mine shall be getting herself a Nexus 7 tomorrow, which she plans to use mainly for e-Reading plus a bit of media usage in the form of BBC iPlayer. I was looking for an easy-to-use interface for her. Any launcher recommendations or simple customisations to make it just a little bit easier? I am sure she could use it as is, but making it easier so I don't have to teach her so much will be good.
How elderly? Talk back might be nifty. I tried it once, it was annoying as hell though

Instructions are poor. You get a quick startup guide on paper and then have to open the book section to read the user manual. I find it harder to learn about a system when I an constantly flipping from the manual to a page to try out what I was reading.

I was more just on about launchers which would allow her to have a nice, clean UI that isn't too cluttered.
Anyone know of such a launcher?

Thanks. I can install Apex on my Galaxy Note, so I'll fiddle around and see what I can do on it.
Just empty the desktop from every single icon . Than..
1.on home screen Add icons that this person will use the most e.g BBC iPlayer (not sure bits going to work without flash), chrome, play store and a nice looking clock widget or something
2. Set each other screen with categories e.g one for books where you place the appropriate widgets and icons . One for videos and one for whatever else like notes calendar and other productivity ....
3. Do that person a favour and download some games .. yes games . You'd be surprised how often older people like to play ... ideal games would be mahjong, card games , also things like Bejeweled ,Zuma, scrabble type games
Stock android launcher is good enough trust me you just have to know how to organise it. Also wait for chameleon that might change things

Ive had the same problem before I think.. on some roms.. that the walpaper isn't set to the size shown when selecting it, not even when using crop tool. It zoom in a lot! .. but for me the size became normal again, as croped, after reboot.. Have you tried to reboot when it happens? =) Those issues happened on my phone on some roms while using gallery app to set a background.

I use wallbase, picspeed and zedge. And i will rate wallbase as best. We can download wallpapers of any resolution. And the next best is picspeed because it gives wallpapers that fits to your mobile resolution, and zedge works the same way, but for Galaxy Note it has very few wallpapers while browsing through the app.

Making phone look different.

Hi.
Im sick of seeing icons everytime I turn on my phone, is there anything I can use to make it different? I dont care it its like windows with the blocks, just something different then the 4 icons each row.

Use folders, each folder can be of a different type i.e. Games, Web based, Productivity and Entertainment.
The only limit is you imagination, don't forget you can always nest folders as well.
Good idea. I was thinking about making some round doughnut things as well but don't know how.

i think you meant 'custom rom' not 'stock rom' in the title
and i put cyanogenmod on my phone because of the extended functionality and settings whilst still having the vanilla experience.

built in pie control (i like it better than lmt), more configurations for the status bar including making it clear, ability to change lockscreen shortcuts without an app like widgetlocker, being able to add or delete whatever i want from the system/app folder, cpu and screen adjustments (kernel), ribbons (i like it better than sidebar), adaway, and a bunch of other reasons.
I rooted Samsung and HTC phones in the past just to get rid of (freeze) the crapware / bloatware that could not be disabled.
I have no need to root the Nexus 4 as it's fine just the way it is.
I was a flash-a-holic in the past but that phase passed. I think the last custom ROM I used was over a year ago on my Galaxy Tab 10.1

Mine is still unmolested, but I'm not sure how long that will last. I've had it for a month, but I miss some of the very simple additions like quick reply from status bar.
It gets credit for working perfectly out of the box, but there are some convenience features that I do want back.

[PORT]Rockchip has Split Screen support

Just seen this on the wire and thought how awesome it looks.
Rockchip is a chinese chip manufacture that powers devices like the popular MK808 and other handheld devices. Looks like they've been busy as today they announced they have a Split screen solution similar to Samsung that runs on Stock Android, except it can run any app.
Oh man does this look yummy.
How likely is it that we will get this on the Nexus 7?

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, But Samsung implementation seems to only be custom apps that work in window form, but this seems to be a framework implementation?
Meaning this should work well with all Play Store apps as long as they followed the Android development guidelines and have a tablet UI. (fragments, panels etc)
Why is this thread has a PORT prefix in the title?

Because it would require a port from Rock chip devices to our N7.
This seems really cool because the Samsung required specific apps where here, he used anything, such as the stock settings app. So it should work with any app.
Plus I like how they all control and flip back and forth. Really nice.

Saw this on Android police and the implementation of gestures, Window resizing, management etc was nice and it's better than Samsung's Multi Window feature.
Wish this gets ported to custom ROMS soon.

Hopefully in the final release it uses the phablet layouts when in split screen. Ideally it would recalculate screen metrics based on the window size.

The rumor has it that Paranoid Android team is developing something like this. In fact CM team had tried to publish their version of multi window(project Cornersrone) but Google wouldn't let them. Multi window is totally possible to make for N7 and whatever modern android device. In near future!

Quite frankly, in the era of 1080p displays, there should be multi-window baked in to the OS. It's a feature that I think would really propel Android forward.
