I have been using tablet talk for quite some time now. But I ran into this new app from clockworkmod and enjoy using it. It seems more reliable than tablet talk.
Hehe, the UI looks better than TabletTalk. Gonna try tonight.
But is it using internet/data to push sms ?
I mean : Phone > Data > Tablet ??
And so, the Tablet would need internet. "mysms" do that too.
What's great with TabletTalk is that you only need to connect your devices together by Bth or WiFi.

With tablet talk when connected to wifi, browser on all my tablets tend to stall. I talked to the developer about that and he acknowledged that issue as a common problem. Plus its a pita to get it to connect even with auto connect set up on both ends. Using Bluetooth or wifi. I haven't had any issues at all using tablet SMS.
This is a great way to do SMS via the tablet.
I was using desksms about a year ago and emailed him and asked for a tablet version. Wonder if it was my idea that.sparked this! Doubtful but funny to me.
i cant get tablet talk to work but tried using this. Its shame it does not mention you have to pay for it

Has anyone else tried this app?
Im on tnt lite 4.4 and when I connect my gtab freezes.
I had the app working for a couple minutes at most.
Ive tried different browsers, but nothing, next I might try a different rom
and see if that works.
I have to try and use this app because I dont have root on my mobile yet.
Edit: i changed my rom to G harmony v2.4.
It connects but force closes on me, better then freezing up my tablet though.
Works for about five minutes, sometimes it doesnt want to connect at first either.
Edit: using cyanogenmod 7.0.3 this app works.
Currently connected to my mobile.
No freezing or force closes.

Tethered via WiFi is just one option but I think the whole point was to do it via Bluetooth.
I can't say for sure if BT has a better/stronger connection than WiFi, but it's something I've been yearning to find out.

I probably wouldn't use this if I could tether over wifi though.
This app is beta and on froyo and gingerbread you can only get internet on
Your browser app.
But it's free and I need to root my mobile.
I've been traveling and dont have a computer right now.
I saw it in the market on my Evo, but NOT on my Gtablet. How can I get it from my not rooted Evo to my rooted Viewsonic GTablet?
Can you backup your apps on your phone?
should be able to put it on your sdcard, then transfer it to your gtablet and install.
Just tried it, it pairs but does not connect via bluetooth. I'm rooted as well. From my understanding android had widespread issues connecting via bluetooth as a server/client to another android device.
Using an Apple or Windows based phone I have no issues.

I had the same problem, i would try it a couple of times to get it to connect.
I used this app on my gtablet and it worked just fine. running Bright Corners with the Clemnsys kernel.

Hi I have tried to get this pda net tablet to run on my gtab forever, it just wont connect to my unrooted dx runnining gingerbread. The best i can get is paired but no connection. I am running clemsyn kernel and cyanogen 7.1.0 rco.
Can anyone tell me how to get it running or suggest another program that will allow me to us my phones data plan that i am already paying for??

I don't suppose anyone knows if PDANet for iphone supports bluetooth? WIFI takes away WAYYYYY too much battery life.
Short Story: Is there anyway to make the nexus start working without WiFi?
Long Story: Sherman, set the Way-Back Machine for about a month ago. So there I was the day of the Google I/O conference refreshing the google play store over and over again until the moment I could order my Nexus 7. Needless to say I ordered it the minute I could. Today I recieved my Nexus 7. It took a while to get here. I picked it up from the mailroom three hours ago. I let it charge and turned it on. First screen asks for my country. Second screen says searching for WiFi. And there I sit because , I don't have WiFi. Is there a workaround for this? Or do I have a $250 paperweight, until I get home later this year?
I can't be the only one with this problem.
Resources available to me:
1) I have a laptop that is connected to very slow internet (ethernet, not wireless). It has USB ports, but I don't think theres a way to share internet through USB. I can not attach a wifi router to this network.
2) I have WiFi where I sleep, but I need to open a browser and put in a username and password to log in. I don't think that will work because I can't get to the web browser part of this.
My last resort is to mail it back home to have family activate it and then mail it back to me. Kind of absurd. Anyone have any suggestions?

ATTN TROLLS: before replying and looking stupid, make sure to read the whole thread. The problem has been resolved. I even explained how I resolved it for other people with potentially the same problem. I have also clearly explained why I bought the Nexus 7. A tablet is a tablet. Without WiFi it still lets me read books, play games, do Sudoku puzzles, and watch episodes that I bring back on a USB thumb drive. I used it to replace my Nook Color running CM7. I have enough WiFi back in my room to browse the web and check my email.

Well, if you are rooted (should be able to root without setting up) then you can just kill the 'setup', process through adb on your pc. You could also try to flash a ROM without that set up process. Like CM
I thought this when I was setting up my tablet and wondered when would happen if someone didn't have wi fi available immediately.

Or this. But hey, go grab a coffee, then root.
I had wifi and it still couldn't detect it when i turned it on! I panicked and i sat there at the first screen bevause there was no option to manually enter wifi settings. My network has secure and ssid off, but couldn't even see neighbours (ssid on).
But I tethered insecure net from phone to get past first screen. Should be able to borrow a friend's internet this way, it doesn't download much.
I have no idea how you plan to use the n7 w/o wifi, at least during setup, it is in terms of service...

Not sure if this still works, but you used to be able to bypass activation by touching all four corners of the device. Top left, top right, bottom right, and bottom left.
I tried the four corners thing. It didn't work. Unfortunately there are no McDonalds or Starbucks near me. I only have these two networks to work with. I bough it to replace my Nook (CM7), which I use to watch episodes of TV shows. I bring the mSD card to work, and put episodes on it, then bring it back to the room and watch them till I fall asleep. With the Nexus I was intent on copying my episodes over through the ethernet cable by day, and taking it back to the room to watch them at night. I guess I'll have to keep watching my shows on my Nook. Sucks. New toy is useless.

This would work. Unfortunately I can't connect anything wireless to this network. I might try to sneak this solution. This is the second to last resort. Thanks for the advice/idea!

I haven't seen any instructions on how to root the device prior to initializing it. Is it possible?

I take it u can't skip the sign in like on phones, if u have no way of getting on a wifi network, you can possibly try to kill the setup process via adb...its not really a google oversight, its 2012 WiFi networks are rather easy to find.
I guess I'm just lucky enough to be where they aren't easy to find.

I have no cell phone coverage here. Although I might be able to use my cell phone to connect to the wireless back at the room, use the cell phone web browser to log on, then tether it to my Nexus. That might work. I'll try that tonight.

use a WIFI dongle to attach to your laptop. make it a hotspot using "connectify" software and connect your nexus to it. your laptop must have internet access.
setup aside, how did you plan on managing files etc on the n7 long term without wifi?
Seems there are other products more suited to your needs if you aren't going to use any online or network features.

I can do it over usb but the play store doesnt work and the bluetooth option isnt for me. I found a way to actually get wifi to work (at least for me) if thiere is a easier way please let me know
First for me I am using to wifi cards for this however it should work over Ethernet or hell even dial-up.
1.Whatever connection you are using to connect to the web allow it to share the connection.
2.Download this app WiFiHotspot creator or if you trust me here is a link to it http://jumbofiles.com/y0l9dv3pbh5x be aware that unless you go for a advance install it wants to install alot of bloatware, nothing malicious just annoying!!!!
3. Once its installed just run it, it's very self-explanatory.
I've noticed its not very fast but it gets the job done. Also it works for everything Ive tested it with. Play, Youtube, network games.
If its any help Im running Windows 7

Really. i always had trouble with connectify, i could surf the web but couldnt use it to download stuff from the play store. might have to dig around the advance options some more

I wasn't able to get your file because the site was down but I downloaded the program from the authors site, start the install and AVG flipped out. After looking around a bit, it's not just me. Be careful w/ this program.

in these days, i was wondering if at this state there is a solution to enable via software the Phone Calls and SMS system on the Nexus 7 3G.
I read that Google released the binaries of the 4.2.2, could be useful to work on it and enable this function ?
Sorry for this stupid question, but probably i bought a wrong device, because i supposed to use it as phone and tablet but i discovered that 3g work only for data...

Well you can try the Google voice/grooveIP combo. Everything will run on your data as it doesn't have regular phone capabilities. But you can set it up to operate exactly like a phone if you are so inclined.

You also might try Talkatone. I have a non-3g n7, Talkatone works better for me than GrooveIP. Mainly on wifi, but also works fine on my 4g wifi hot spot device. I've dropped my cell service, use both my phone and n7 on wifi only.

Thanks for your prompt reply.
Its not a must have, but the main reason was to leave the Phone and use the USIM on the Tablet. My first intent was to have just one subscription to a service. So use the Tablet with a bluetooth earset as phone...
Probably this was not a smart idea, i guess...but the damage is done... (as we say in Italy).
I hope there is a simple solution somewhere, in the mean time i would like to root the device and enable tethering for the future...

I am new to mobile solutions and I have been thinking recently - if it was possible (and reliable) to use a non-3G Nexus 7 connected to a regular non-smartphone for ad-hoc Internet access?
Here is the scenario and justification for the solution (correct me if I am wrong in my thinking please):
I mostly use older type business mobile phones that hold battery for a long time.
No need for fancy apps and all fireworks. I use it only for business calls and texts.
I would like to get the 16GB Nexus 7 for personal organizer functionality. I think WiFi access would suffice for me.
Now, for the rare occasion, I would like to know if it is possible to connect both devices (via Bluetooth maybe?) to use the mobile phone as internet access point for the tablet?
I know with smartphones it would be easy as I could create a WiFi hot-spot and connect the tablet using WiFi, however I don't want to sacrifice the battery life of my phone by getting a smartphone.
Just to summarize - I need a long battery life phone that can (occasionally) serve internet access for the Nexus 7.
Does my solution make sense? Is such setup possible?

I don't think that you would get a satisfying data transmission speed even if your scenario could be set up.

.....i am using my nexus7 with my superb,one and only,nexus s via Bluetooth tethering sometimes, but as the standby time goes down in this case, i am thinking of getting a Nokia c2-01 for hat kind oft use. I found in internetsearch some solutions with that phone.....it should work and last longer...

This will obviously depend on what kind of phone you have, but have you looked into PDAnet? I use that on my android phone to do bluetooth vpn to my tablet. try looking into that.
What about a Mifi? It just uses a 3g sim and creates a WiFi hotspot around itself.
Don't know what the battery life on them is like though...

FYI a stock nexus 7 will not communicate with ad-hoc WiFi APs.
So you would need to root the N7 and use a custom kernel (right now that's CM10.1 nightlies, possibly others) if the other device provides the connectivity via ad-hoc WiFi.
I do something similar with a WiFi N7 and an older (rooted, gingerbread) Android phone. Works fine, although the battery consumption and temperature rise of the phone is pretty significant (two radios running simultaneously).
If the mobile phone was not originally marketed to do WiFi tethering, be aware that it may not have a thermal design that is adequate for continuous data transfer on both radios. Light browsing is probably fine though.
