Custom ROM breakthrough for Android? - Off-topic

So, been wondering for a while. When will the next big "Customized" ROM occur? We've already gotten MIUI and its pretty cool, but wouldn't you want to see something new? Something not based off of iOS or Android in general but still able to to run on Android? Something fresh, new, never before seen? I've no idea what it would look like or how it would run, but maybe you guys do? A "Wish list" if you will, the appearance, how it preforms (keep in mind Hardware limitations of various phones), etc.
I guess I can (dream) start:
-The next potential Cyanogenmod but appears nothing like your standard Android OS
-Running on ICS and JB?
Just bored and I wanna see what some people can come up with. Maybe if a talented developer or a group of them could come together to pull something off? (One can only imagine)

There's a limit to what a developer can do with the Android source code, especially with a biannual release schedule. I'm not sure there will be anything radically different any time soon. If Google switches to one major update a year it might be possible.

I've always thought ParanoidAndroid looked cool but never tried it. It's a tablet hybrid ROM for phone.

I've also tried and loved PA, but its pretty much lost support for my device since no one wants to pick it up. And over time, you eventually lose interest.

If you mean Sony's XCMB it probably won't happen. They aren't exactly fans of outside development.

Something like Windows phone? The UI I mean, its pretty "outside the box" a ROM that's "never before seen" A status bar that is accessible via swiping from the left or right? A Facebook friendly ROM? (Will never happen unless FB releases source code) Let your ideas flow!

new to N7

yay, my dad got my a 32gb for xmas! anywho I'm really liking it and the responsiveness of AOKP so far! i have to say, i had the most frustrating time rooting it though (i'm no noob to rooting anything btw), never had so much trouble. the rootkits weren't able to adb to my tablet and were giving me problems for about 3 hours. i finally said "**** it" i'll just unlock with fastboot and put twrp on it the manual way (which only took about 3 minutes).
anywho! i've been on jelly bean for a few months now on my sprint sgs3 (4.1.2), so i'm not new to jellybean at all. but, i am new to 4.2.1. is that quick settings pulldown thingy new to 4.2.1 or is that nexus 7 feature that most roms have? i find it quite annoying since i usually use my right thumb to pull down the notification bar, but often find myself not reaching far enough left to avoid pulling down the settings bar. are there ROMs that give us the option of moving those settings widgets back to the notification menu or disabling the quick settings menu? im on AOKP and haven't seen it yet.
im really looking forward to trying out all the different roms that are available!
It's new to 4.2.1. Hope you like it.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
Yea, setting up the drivers for it were a *****, had a hard time on two computers at work then used Wug's toolkit and installed the drivers manually. I did have to manually reboot into fastboot to install the drivers and reboot after all the drivers were all installed, but in the end that was the best way I found to do it; had no errors and it did warn that I may have to reboot for all to work correctly.

I meant the fact that you said PA Devs. We dont have a PA dev for our device and we won't get any because developing jellybean for our legacy device is quite a bit more work than those other devices that support ion natively (Ion is something related to the kernel). And PACman isnt really a PA port Its PACman. Something entirely different. Next level? Possibly
I had mentioned people,.. old one.. but yeah we do have a port ..

it's not halo, it's a kind of add-on for it. It make an application be persistent in halo so you can launch it anywhere.
Anyway I managed to install it and it works but the app is in the notification bar instead of the halo.

I'm sure Carbon is a good rom but can anyone give an idea of what it can do that the device cannot do on the stock rom with custom launcher and third party apps? Since the Sprint S4 version does not have it's own changelog (at least I didn't see one) not sure what features are working and what doesn't. Also, don't you lose all the air gestures, eye tracking, etc when going to AOSP rom?
I tried nightly 3 and I kept getting setup wizard fc. do I have to flash an aosp kernel or does it come with one.

Yes your going to loose the entire set of unique TW features that come with the S4 - air gestures, smart scroll, etc. A lot of people don't care for those features, me personally, I like to show them off but I don't ever really use them.
A lot of people absolutely despise the TW interface. And yes some of it can be changed with third party apps and mods but not all of it. Some people want the clean AOSP experience, you can easily theme your entire interface (dialer, messaging, unique colors, blah) with themes from the play store without the need for downloading a bunch of third party apps for each individual thing you want to change. Also native DPI changer is included in a lot of AOSP roms. It's really just personal preference. None of the Samsung bloat, Sprint bloat, awful TW colors, just check out roms like AOKP, AOSPA, CM, etc, on other devices.
I recommend checking out Slimbean for our device to get the general gist of what AOSP roms provide you with.

I really liked Slimbean but ended up going back to TW, AOSP is getting there, but I ran into too many bugs that I didn't have to deal with when I was using TW. I miss just being able to switch roms as I please, but my job kind of requires me having a phone that works, all the time, and quickly. Hopefully in the next week or so those issues are fixed because they seem to be on the nightly (or in the process of being fixed on the nightly) (all my problems were with signal and calling. Ex: distorted voice, bars were all over the place and I randomly lost signal in places where I had full bars of 4G with TW)
Just a word of caution if you decide to hop ship from touchwiz.
Besides that, AOSP>Touchwiz because I sure as hell only use the features to show off, i'd much rather have a stock unified UI than having to download apps to achieve that. It's also alot quicker since you don't have the framework of TW and the features weighing it down :good:

I'm familiar with AOSP roms (ran them on many other phones) but was specifically asking about Carbon. Not bagging on AOSP roms just seems like a larger sacrifice with all the newer features of the S4. Granted I do think a lot are gimmicky and don't work that well but do use Smartstay & IR functions.
Just curiosity more than anything.

you wouldn't lose IR function. smart remote is compatible with sgsiv and aosp.

Have you disabled all the bells and whistles?

Mainly I did it for simplified use and less memory and CPU usage. Granted it's a pretty boring phone that way but I didn't get the phone because of the software extras.
Disabled everything but Air View cause it's the bomb!
I haven't disabled anything. I upgraded to this phone because of those features, if I wanted to run without them there are much less expensive options available.
The only feature I have no use for and will probably never use is the IR capability.

I leave them on and still battery lasts all day. Those are some of the things that set this phone apart from the S3 and other phones so just makes sense to get use of them.
I run and use every feature of this phone! I haven't even installed a custom rom yet because I don't want someone else to dictate which features I can use. I am rooted and have almost all the mods that work on stock odexed installed and my phone lasts from 6:00am to 11:00pm everyday with room to spare. Why limit such a powerful device by turning off what makes this phone great. Here are the mods I have installed: hotspot mod, 4 in 1 boot, Nottach Exposed, N7 Ported animations, S4 PRL write mod, and international S4 boot animation. I haven't gone with a custom kernel but that is my next step. I came from the HTC Evo LTE and love the stock feel. I was a MeanBean fan because Mikeyxda never compromised the stock feel of the phone but added tons of tweaks and mods to make the phone fly. When the 3.0 version of the Team Sonic FreeGS4 rom drops I will probably install it since clark44 seems to have the same philosophy as Mikeyxda. I just want to play with my phone a little more before I go the custom route.

Sorry I did forget about the Ir blaster. I do love this and use it daily at home or messing with tvs everywhere. Love having all 3 tvs and dvr/dvd ect at home all working as good as the remote. I was basically talking about smart scroll and some hand gestures are pretty useless.
Smart rotation is actually a pretty useful feature if you ever use your phone while in bed. I also have smart stay on as well as air jump and air move. The rest I can live without. The IR beam is pretty useful as well. ..

This is probably a dumb question (not a lot of rooting/dev experience here) but how do I get that RTL feature to work. I have a Nexus 6 running Android 5.0, new as can be, and looking to help my normal-sized hands by putting the back button on the right.
By the way, just to give some helpful advice for one-handed use of a phone this size: Nova Launcher, Swiftkey (right-sided mode), and I just ordered the Minisuit Tactic Handstrap Wallet (on Amazon, $8) and it looks like it'll be super thin/flush with phone (or case) and allow me to put my finger(s) through for tethering. Yes, I know that these phones are large and meant to be used that way, but Android is awesome for customization and you can do just as much with the exterior of the phone as well
I just want the option to move the buttons closer together, that would be great
