[Guide] Free wifi phone the easy way. US - Nexus 7 General

Holy crap that other thread about making your Nexus 7 a free WiFi Phone was complex!
Here is the ubereasy way.
Step 1: Sign up for Google voice account for free
Step 2: Make calls directly from gmail inbox in a browser or from https://www.google.com/voice/m in a browser.
Step 2 alternate: Download Talkatone from the Play store, sign in with your Google account.
Step 3: Make phone calls, for free. Receive phone calls, for free. Texts too.
You can also use Talkatone to send to facebook and include Google chat for texting/chat.
I also recommend Google voice extension for Chrome on PC (requires Google talk and video app download. Attempt to call from gmail inbox and you'll be prompted to download it.)

There was some reason I didn't use this in the past, and ended up buying GrooveIP instead.. can't recall why though

I use an app called spare phone. had less echo than groove when I tested them both.
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2

Both sparephone and grooveip work GREAT! However, neither is FREE. You'll note that keyword in the Guide title. Talkatone actually is free and works great 99%+ of the time.

I have the gvoice app and can send text messages from it, I have it set to direct calls to my cellphone and to my gmail.
Whenever I have tried to do a call from it and direct to my gmail on my n7 nothing happens, I must be doing it wrong.

This is a lot easier.... The problem being that if you use the apps where you directly sign into Gmail, you will never receive calls in your browser on your computer. They will route to your tablet instead.
My method is a touch more complicated, but it preserves the Gmail soft phone, and provides a (significantly) higher call quality.
But your way is a lot easier...

You're right - if talkatone is running on Nexus 7, Google voice won't ring to a browser session.
I will say that I've had little to no call quality issues that anyone has told me about, with as little as 5% wifi signal (per elixir widget 2 wifi signal quality applet). I have been primarily using this method for telephony for 3 weeks or so.

As noted, gvoice app is not enough. On your Nexus 7 it will only be texting. You need to have a softphone provider as well to call. Talkatone is free and pretty good, grooveip is great but costs, sparephone is pretty good and also costs.

I was using groove ip when I had quality problems.
I haven't tried talk at one, because I have my method up and running (and I make a lot of calls from within gmail)

Won't let me fix it for some reason. Should have been "talkatone". Not "talk at one"

For those of you that had issues on groove IP... did you try the basic settings to cancel the echo? I'm using the free version and made 2 changes in The settings, everything works perfectly and was not complicated at all.

GrooveIP is working fine for me!

Well I am using GrooveIP free version and it is working fine for me in both making a receiving calls.

Loving this feature... Streak 7 Wifi Sharing

No tethering cables is needed, as long as 4G/3G is on, you can hook up your pc to your streak 7 and the download speed is FASTER than my timewarnercable highspeedinternet .....
this may be the my favourite apps with streak 7 so far...
I can maybe terminate my internet and use this streak 7 to surf.
After 5Gigabyte 4G datausage, will be switched to slower lane, but that should still be comparable.
Actually this device is really not as bad as those "professoinal" reviewers said..

I love this feature too and like the streak also except for the battery life. I saw that you posted getting sipdroid to work with you google voice on the streak...whats the setup? I have free calls on my cell phone with google voice but it requires the GV Call back app. If you could help it would be great.

I followed the guide from this link, which I find quite helpful.
Do set your Sipdroid account correctly. For me, I set up pbxes.org account,
sipdroid app from market, and of course, proper set up of Gvoice (online), remember to tick GTalk as one of the destination for incoming call.
In Sipdroid, when you input account, remember it is [email protected], not just [email protected]
Good luck.
Btw, the Sipdroid received an incoming call even faster than my normal google voice forwarding to my cellphone... which is quite impressive. Also the call quality is superior over HSPA.
Let me know if you have any questions, I personally find pbxes.org is not very user-friendly , at all.

Which link are you referring to? Thank you for your help.
Nevermind. For some reason my Sipdroid app on my Streak doesnt have the button that lets you create a new PBxes account so I went to my phone and created one and now free calling with my Google voice number! I'm glad I ported my number to google a few weeks back. Its my work number and now I have it wherever I want to go. I switched to Virgin Mobile and the $25 plan. Unlimited data and text plus 300 minutes..who needs the minutes! The LG Optimus V isn't the best phone but not the worst either. Now with my Streak 7 also I plan on getting rid of my internet at home now...got to save everywhere I can now.

[Q] Google Voice?

I can't find Google Voice...I find that odd. Am I misiing something?
Nah man I can't find it either I think hopefully theyll try to make an optimized version, regardless, I'm a little upset
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
If you try to install it via market.android.com, it says it's an invalid device.
not compatible yet. Should have an update soon. I have found other apps like logmin ignition don't work either. Sure updates will roll out soon
anyone have an idea on timing for google voice? really would love to be able to make a voice call and get sms.
google translate isn't compatible either...not sure why. seems like it should be able to run the phone version just fine.
I suspect that voice calls will not work even when/if we get google voice app in here. Unless google decides to push gtalk direct dialing like on the browser gmail.

I don't think they'll let you make calls from the xoom or any tablet, I think the most they'll do is to let us send text messages over the xoom, just because this is a tablet not a phone, but then you never know...
you already can with skype
Something I thought about was just using the browser to access the google voice webpage, which you can use to text message as well. It does work better when you change the browser userstring to desktop instead of android.
i tried a little while ago to run the latest version and got fc right off the bat. It may be as simple as a slight APK mod. Ill try a few things and report back.
Did you get it working
By using Fring VoIP, SIPGate, and Google Voice I can make VoIP calls with my Xoom. Once you set up Fring with SIPGate, add your SIPGate number to GV. Go to the GV website on your Xoom, lookup a contact can call. It will forward the call to your SIPGate number and ring on the Xoom through Fring. Works great.
Still waiting for an official GV app though.
I've been in touch with team at Google. At first, I was given the following response:
Thanks for your note. At this time, Google Voice is not compatible with the Motorola Xoom, because the Xoom doesn't have the required telephone features.

doesn't csipsimple use honeycombs native phone capabilities? If so why can't GV?
Lacking that what about after the 4g upgrade? Will it not have a radio then technically?
I believe the reason there isn't telephone capabilities is that Google isn't interested in creating a full-fledged VoIP solution just yet. You can see they're testing the waters with the VoIP calling in Gmail, but if they were truly dedicated to the concept, they would have added VoIP capabilities to the standard Android app or released SIP information. After all, Gingerbread and the Nexus S have the capabilities to run something like that.

This is a deal breaker for me on the xoom/Honeycomb. iPad has official GVoice app that does sms, missed calls, & voicemail and it has the talkatone app that does GVoice voip calls. You can put away your phone while using your tablet and not miss anything.
If your GV number is set to ring gmail/gtalk will a the gtalk app ring on a xoom?

It looks like I'm going to have to put off the Xoom until more features are enabled.

I'm sure google has some clueless employees too, and given that they developed a GV app for the iPad, which also lacks telephone functionality, I'm betting that that's all this is....one of Google's few clueless.

[Q] Google Voice Phone Calls on Nook Possible?

Does anyone know how to make a phone call with Google Voice on the Nook? I open up the Phone app, Dial the number and on top it says "Dialing with Google Voice" then I get a error message saying "Mobile Network Not Available" (BTW GV is free for yet another year!) I assume the Nook / Android software is looking for a cellular data network that doesn't exist. Is it possible to make it use WIFI???
I'm sorry if this question has been asked and answered in different forums but I haven't found it anywhere.
Thank you.
well, to answer a simple way...there is no microphone so even if you get it working for voice, you can listen not talk.
the text messaging side works well for me though.
I think the only way is to use a bluetooth microphone / headset
I haven't tried anyway ...

I think you forgot about Bluetooth...But, that still doesn't answer the question on how do you make it make phone calls. I want to make calls with Google Voice just like I do when I go to the website on my desktop. If anyone knows how please share!
Can't do it via the app - it's simply not enabled for SIP calls. It always uses the cellular voice connectivity, even if you tap the "Use Google Voice" option on the prompt.
Have you tried the mobile web interface via the Browser though?
If you were to use bluetooth and do a google voice call in to viop setup that might ring your nook gingerbread has settings to enter a sip account. Id try it up gizmo is no more and dont really need to set up a pbx or whatever the other way to do it

Try sipdroid if stock GB voip settings don't work. Use the GV call back app to get past dialing out fees. Sipgate may still be free.
Use a sipgate account and google voice callback to make calls when i roam on my evo. Not sure if itll work on nook. ill give it a shot if i can find a bluetooth headset to use
Any word on this working? I have been trying allot of things tonight to get this to work in some way
nope even with bluetooth headset working, it does not have a way of receiving the voice signals and channeling it so no phone calls (yet)

Nope...remembered and tossed to the side...no one has a working bluetooth with mic in yet. The nook was never intended for recording at all(which is still stupid in my opinion...voice notes in books would be a KICK ASS feature). Once there is a working mic in on bluetooth, then GV will be the bees knees.

Absolutely. I do it all the time using Google Voice and a WiFi connection. Note that I am running Cyanogenmod from an microSD card at the time. Haven't tried it directly using the rooted nook software.

worked fine for me on rooted stock, also.
This is the only way that I have found to currently use Google Voice. I have a grandfathered faves plan with Tmo and have set my Google number as a fave. I can dial any number out from Google Voice, which rings my cell phone. I answer the cell and Google rings the other number, using my cell phone. I can make these calls from the NC, using Dolphin browser. They connect and are very clear. No success using NC browser. Also, no used minutes on my cell phone plan!

Hangouts Dialer App + Google Voice

Just in case you don't know...the new Hangouts Dialer app is out and if you've enabled Google Voice on your Sprint account...VOILA!! WIFI calling.
Just tried on my Nexus 7 and it works great. Calls going to my Sprint number are routed to the tablet also. If I don't have data but still have service (Wild and Wonderful West Virginia)...the calls still go to my phone.
Ok so a little update...
I received the message to allow hangouts to basically replace the google voice app. Hangouts is faster than the gvoice app every was..which is good. Also consumes less battery.
However, if I don't have data or WiFi I can't send texts from hangouts even though it's my default app for messaging. If I don't have data I have to use the stock messenger. Which isn't exactly a problem...just wanted to state the fact.
Texts and calls work on my nexus 7. Voice quality seems fine even tho I have DSL at home.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
Under settings>SMS and settings>[your email here] you can control whether texts are sent from gvoice or your regular phone number [emoji106]
Every time I make outgoing calls on my tablet, the caller ID shows up as unknown. Also, how can I send sms through tablets?
Settings, email, and then look under Google Voice section to enable messages.
My caller ID is working just fine from my tablet. I'm sure there's going to be kinks that need worked out. I've had random issues with GV for years lol

[Q] Mi Mix and Google Voice issue...

I am seeing an issue with my new Mix when trying to place a phone call with the Google Voice app set for GV to make all calls. The animation to go to dialer appears and very quickly you can see the call start to be placed but then it closes and returns you to precious screen.
Anyone else seeing tgs, afraid GV is a must have for me so going to have to eBay the phone (love it otherwise) if no solution. Tried clearing app, reinstalling, and all the settings I can think of but all to no avail.
I have MIUI global v8.0 (8.0.7.0.0 MAHCNDI). Localization set to China, nothing else seems like a better option, so left it but changing didn't make any difference.
same issue mate
Sucks, love the phone but can't give up my Google voice for it. Anyone have an idea for a workaround/fix?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using XDA Free mobile app
I can verify GV doesn't work on making calls on the EU rom either. Will report back down the road once there are updated weekly EU roms available from MIUI / xiaomi.
I heard someone who did the Hangouts transition say it works for GV calls. I haven't ever done the Hangouts transition simply because it doesn't seem to carry text messages forward and I prefer having them all in on place rather than having old messages in GV app and new ones in Hangouts.

Hey I have a Mate 8 with the same issue (mix on the way tho) and as I was investigating I read somewhere that most Chinese made phones have this issue. The only real workaround is to set gv to ask every time. It sounds annoying at first but it's less annoying then my calls not going thru or people asking what number is this (because they don't recognize my actual cell number). It has something to do with the timing of the handoff from gv to cellular. I have not had any issues once it asks call with/without gv. I would suggest giving this a shot.
Sent from my HUAWEI NXT-AL10 using Tapatalk
Curious, never tried the ask every time setting. Things worked fine e if I did the hangouts dial and set Hangouts to get GB calls and texts. On this Mate 9 (Chinese version) it works fine set to make all calls.
Sent from my Huawei Mate 9 using XDA Labs
This bug persists
On both the Chinese ROM and the EU ROM, using GV to make calls causes the dialer/phone app to crash, always. "Ask every time" causes it to crash as well.
I use hangouts to make outgoing calls. Google Voice itself is still capable of forwarding incoming calls to my phone's actual number (one I never use), so the actual phone app accepts any and all incoming calls. However, I have to dial out using Hangouts (kind of annoying).
So now I use hangouts for everything phone-function related on my end, and have the actual contacts app and phone app squirreled away somewhere where it won't accidentally get used (unless I want to). The only downside (I like Hangouts, but that might be a problem for some), is that my outgoing calls use VOIP (data). It's almost a nonissue, but it would be nice if MIUI worked with GV the way American android builds do.
Curiously, yesterday GV make all calls stopped working for me and I had to set to ask every time. Then today ask every time stopped working. I went round and round uninstalling contacts and diapers and hangouts. Finally got it all working setting hangouts dialer as default dialer and GV make every call. Workable, but would prefer regular Google dialer and GV but tried APKs from APK Mirror for last few versions of Google dialer and they won't install, v7 says parse error and v6 says folder expected not found. Ugh. Anyways, at least it is working now.

I finally received my phone and I am seeing the same as you guys, can only make gv calls with hangouts dialer. I'm getting sick of Google's lack of support for GV and am giving real consideration to just porting my number out. Smh I've had gv since it came out.
FYI: If you're using the hangouts dialer then you don't even need the gv app anymore. #ijs

Actually, my understanding is for Hangouts to use Google Voice for calls and/or messages you still need the GV app installed and logged in.
Agree on Google's lack of support. It is platform wide, they just do the in favor and out of favor thing too much. If/when they kill GV I will be killing my g-apps and moving to O365 anyways, only reason I use Google-sphere extensively is GV. Everything else can be gotten elsewhere and is generally better elsewhere at that.

I have Mi Note 2 Global Edition with stock ROM MIUI 8.0.13. Using phone dialer with Voice+ app to initiate call back doesn't work either
Of course I can call using Hangout with data, but I prefer call via cellular tower due to sound quality and price (free incoming call). I have found a workaround:
(1) Open google.com/voice with browser (such as chrome) on the phone. It should be redirected to mobile version.
(2) Specify a callback #
(3) Call a # using the dialer in the browser
After (3), it will initiate a callback to the # in (2)
add me to the club...picked up the Mate 9 yesterday and now, not being able to use GV on the Mate 9 is a show-stopper for me. this is a great phone, but i'm waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to dependent on my GV number.
I "migrated" over to Google Hangouts for my GV #. I've downloaded Hangouts dialer app and it's linked to the GV #. I'm able to call from the Hangouts dialer no problems.

sure, glad to help. It should be a VOIP call. You'll note that it says that you're calling from your VOIP number. Check the settings in hangouts on which default number it uses. Also, if you switch over to hangouts for texting, you might notice your contacts not "syncing". That's actually not what's going on, it's just the way the phone is reading the stored numbers. If you have questions, I can put in the steps to get that converted fairly painlessly.
I have other issues w/ google on how it's handling hangouts in the past and future. When they abandoned GV, hangouts was the only place to go for the VOIP #. Messenger, Duo and Allo do not have integration w/ the GV #. Hangouts used to be better. But you don't have a hangouts web portal (only for text and MMS) to put in a phone number and have it call you at your cell or elsewhere. But the GV portal is still available for the time being.

Why not switch to GV in hangouts? It is better in every regard... and you can use the hangouts dialer.
I do to an extent as I have too. But Hangouts is annoying in a few ways, that is why it failed and is being retooled as Enterprise app.
