[Q] Is it safe to unlock bootloader from a custom Rom? - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I am a NooB and I'm really sorry if this is the wrong section.
I recently upgraded from Eclair to GingerXperia Revolution v1 and I must say I quite like this ROM.
It was very fast when clean installed it has slowed down after a while, but still I would keep this Rom but there are issues with tethering and wifi hotspots which are crucial to me.It probably is the best rom for stock kernel, but maybe it's time for me to change my kernel and try some of the better roms. No need to post step by step manual as how to do it as I found it on xda already (thanks good people fom here)
Ok
My specs:
Xperia x8
E15i shakira
Band xxx015
11w01 (i know how cool is that lol)
GingerXperia Revolution Rom (installed via rooting/xrecovery)
26.2.9. Kernel (im noob so I dont know if this is stock kernel or custom, please explain)
*Now is it safe to attempt to unlock bootloader from those specs? or do I need to do it from Eclair 2.1 (which would be extra hassle)
*Or is it even worth it? I want to put on miniCM7 so for that I'll need nAa kernel I think.
*Will my current rom run when I change to kernel to nAa?
*Is there a way to speed up my x8? Like I heard that you can partition your sd card and allocate some as internal memory,is that true? If yez wouldnt that help greatly?
Thank you everyone for your time.

Do it from eclair. It's safer. And performance-wise, you will see a change in performance using a custom kernel.
After changing kernels and rom, let's talk tweaks. I'm not one for swapping though, but it does seem to boost performance from all i've read.

Thanks I kinda thought that just didn't want to admit it lol, would you know where the download eclair rom so I can flash it via xrocovery insteax of using SEUS which would wipe out my rooting and x recovery and Id have to start from scratch
Thanks

Here is the .ftf file for stock rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12442257
You need to flash it with flashtool though.. and it will unroot your phone.. i can't find a cwm-flashablr zip atm as i'm on the app. Sorry.

Than i read some topics here on xda and i found that custom kernels will improve the performance.
so i just want to knw
1. how to unlock bootloader and install custom kernels?
2. which custom kernel is better or best?
3. do i need any specific custom rom pre install before installing custom kernel? like as i said im using eshca arch 2.3.7.
4. how can i find my phone model like is it e15i or e15a ?

1.there are many threads here explaining how to unlock bootloader, so please read a one of them. also as it seems risky for some users think twice.(you might brick your phone) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436924&highlight=bootloader+unlock)
and when it comes to custom roms, some needs custom kernals and some don't. so decide which rom you want based on their features, looks, etc and if the selected rom needs a custom kernal then you have to flash.
2. read user reviews, also there are some big names like LinuxDX, nAa, alfs etc....
3. nope
4.sorry isn't it showing in "About Phone" section on "Settings"? under "Model Number"?
P.S. i used some custom roms too. but back to stock 2.1 because of battery issues. I used "Sony Ericsson Update Service" aka "SEUS" to reinstall stock rom. and there is a app named "Links to SD" which do the same task of "Apps2SD" so you can free up some memory if you use 2.1.
thanx goldbugbee......
Correction: to goldbugbee
3: yes. For some roms you need a specific Rom. Like minicm uses naa kernel. Etc

3.the best way to flash a new kernel is while being on stock rom

4.Pull out the battery of your phone it should say somewhere

[Q] Anybody from Newcastle (UK)?

hello guys,
I am looking for someone who is able to flash my friends Samsung galaxy s i9000. It has still the Froyo software on it. I successfully flashed my to ics but I am not able to do this with the other device. It has a strange basebuild no. I'm not sure how to do this.
Can anyone help me? I would be really thankful.
Cheers
Is no one able to help me?
The baseband is the modem. Should make no difference to which rom you flash. Is it on eclair, froyo or gingerbread?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Sorry, just noticed you've said froyo. You just need to flash stock gb rom, then the semaphore kernel to match for cwm and root, then you're good to go for any custom rom you wish.

This smartphone has JM1 installed. Sorry but I am an absolutly newbie. I only was able to flash my one with a step by step guidance.
I haven't found anything about JM1 How to flash etc.
I am a little bit desperate now ....
Search for a stock gb rom (jvu/jw1 are recent) with gb bootloaders and follow the flashing instructions using odin.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Sorry, where do I find something like this? After flashing with Odin I will be able to put ICS from teamhacksung on it?
See perka's jvu thread in dev section, there is an odin flashable download.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Once flashed, boot up, turn off, then flash cf-root kernel for jvu - use the search function to find thread or go to read first couple of pages of perka's thread for a link.
Once you're rooted, you'll be good to go.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Is it this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 ?? You mean JVU is compatible with JM1?
Thank you for your help!
If you're friend needs a rom i'd start by either flashing Darky's ROM 10.2 RE with full instructions including a vid tutorial on that thread
or
Flash Jetpack v8.2 with instructions and a vid tutorial in that thread.
The reason why i recommend those two ROMS, is they're particularly easy to flash and have good support.
I'd start with Darky's ROM and then move to other ROMS from there if you want, because it's a fast, very stable rom with a brilliant community for support. Plus you dont need much expertise to flash it, and it comes packaged with root and clockwork mod recovery installed, so you dont need to do anything to prepare your phone for flashing. This ROM does it all. If you wanna move off from there, well then you're all set. But if you're friend just wants a fast stable ROM, then he's all set with Darky. If he wants a bit extra speed, then move to Jetpack V8.2 it's stable and no bugs and its very fast and features thunderbolt! tweaks preinstalled, which are custom tweaks written by a guy called pikachu01 and they improve the SGS very well. They dont require too much expertise to install, but this saves you hassle and gives you all those added benefits from thunderbolt!.
If you're really keen on this teamhacksung ICS build then go to the darky rom and then from there install teamhacksungs build. Just make sure you read carefully to know what you're doing.

Flash a stock gingerbread rom. Then flash a custom kernel like semaphore. After that you can install ics.

11W33 vs unlocking bootloader

Hey!!
I'm new on this forum. So I have rooted X8 (E15i) with 11W33 and I have GingerDX, but its slowly. I want to unlock bootloader for greater performance, but I read that bootloader unlock can permanently damage the phone. I search for safe roads to unlock phone, or better ROM for stock kernel. This phone Is my first with Android, so please understand me.
Dont try to unlock you wll brick ur phone. only below 11w29 its safe, above its playing with your luck:fingers-crossed:.
just try some stock kernel roms and find what suit you. i think dx is very good just update it or delete some unwanted apps that slow it down
if you want to check this support stock kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1237930
if you want to stay with dx you can speed it up by overclock it with this module that u can find it in his thread
(GingerDX Overclock Module (x8oc.ko v004) ) but dont set very high frequences.
thats not true
check this forum : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506502
u can now unlock the bootloader above11w29+.
It is still 50-50% chance for 11w29-11w34 and above that through you're phone after trying it, only if you're very lucky you can have it work on 11w35+..

I dont want any chance to brick my phone. I tryed GingerDX + OC to 768 and governor performance but it's slowier than Stock rom. I downloaded unofficial MIUM rom and its quite faster, but still this is not good rom, i have only 20MB free ram, when i kill all apps.

How to start from "zero"?

Hello, I'm kinda newbie at this...
I have an Xperia X8 e15a with manufacturing date 11W11 @ stock kernel, running with GDX v026.
but lately I've noticed that my phone is too slow... even when I get incoming calls, its hard to slide the bar and answer them, so I want to know how can I speed up my phone. I'm thinking of changing the ROM to PrimeHD or other ROM that is faster.
I also think of the possibility of changing to a custom kernel but I'm afraid of bricking it because I remember this phone was from X company and I entered a code on internet and now it works for Y company, so I don't know if thats a real SIM unlock (bootloader unlocking says the phone must be sim unlocked). Oh... and I wonder if I could make a swap partition... I don't really know how to do it, I've just made them on my PC so I'm not sure if I can do it on my phone.
I feel like my phone is messy... I've seen 2 kinds of recovery tools and I just wanna have one (CWM and xRecovery). Does full wipe delete them? I would like to go back to the very begginig (without unrooting lol) and then change everything from the start :S.
Thanks.
PD: long story short:
What ROM is fast?
how can I make a swap partition?
can I unlock the bootloader to have a custom kernel? (having in mind that I introduced a code online to "unlock" my SIM)

1st check with s1too is you have sim lock certificate(if yes, you can unlock your bl)
2 you can try yourself there is no perfect rom for everbody
You need a partition on your sd for use swap

Well I know there's no perfect ROM for everybody, but I'm just asking for some recomendations on fast ROMs... :B
is PrimeHD fast? is any other ROM faster than GDX?
And about the swap partition... is there any requirements? I remember I wanted to do it back then but I don't remember why I didn't xD
thanks
If you've already unlocked bl, switch kernels. That would help a lot.

IMO you don't need swap at all for GB.
Still if you want to, use it with a class 6 or 10 sdcard
Need help installing Recovery on Stock kernel
Hello All,
I was using CyanogenMod7 @ FXP kernel and had reverted back to Stock Kernel + Rom. Now I just want to try Custom ROMS over STOCK Kernel but couldn't find a way to install CWM on Stock Kernel for my W8 Device.
I want to use FDE 4+, but that too requires CWM to be installed over Stock Kernel, and I seriously don't know how to do this.
Someone please provide me a link/tutorial/guide to do the same.

Maybe you should give GDX another try, now that you have unlocked your bootloader. I used to use GDX with stock kernel, but like 14days ago I unlocked my bootloader and flashed ALFS kernel for GDX and now the ROM is like it never was before, super smooth and fast.

how to overclock the Cappy

our cappy is fast as it is on 4.2 but i have yet to overclock a phone yet and i hear its not like taking the risk of OC your computer so i would like to try it out on the cappy first. so i have googled this already and it comes up with somone already OC it to 1.2 ghz which i would be fine with but in order to OC you need to flash a kernal i think it said? i am not fimilular with kernals with all of the phones i have messed with i have yet to touch kernals, the only time i have flashed a kernal (had a interesting custom recovery) was to root my cappy to put CM on it and got CWM after. i dont see the points of them other than more customization which im not interested in, so how would i go about doing this can someone help me out please?

You do indeed need a custom kernel that allows it. Flashing them is fairly simple, you just need a Odin flashable version if you don't wanna go the custom ROM way.
Make sure that your kernel is made for the current version your phone is running and that it's for the I897! As per your signature, Corn kernel would be your best option as it is for GB.

as of last night i flashed Cyangenmod to get CWM and then flashed paranoid android 3.99, mines a I896 btw i think since i got a bootloop its on At&t/firmware. (only useing on wifi for now) i had corn kernel before to get a recovery and root but if i want to OC it would i have to get corn kernel again? it was a pretty slow boot up every time i turned it on with the stock rom.
No you don't have nor want to. Corn is for GB, if you flashed CM, you're probably on JB.
You'll just have to flash a JB kernel that allows OC (like devil).

so i was looking through some of my stuff on my cappy (cyangenmod 10.1.3 on it) and i looked at the performance option and it has the option to overclock it to 1.2 GHz, would i have to flash a special kernel? or am i fine like this?
Default CM kernel supports 1.2GHz step overclock, just set it and test for stability issues. Nothing else is needed.

first of all the t211 is a tablet not a phone . you have a dual core clocked at 1.2ghz im sure thats pretty fast i think its because you have too many apps. if you still want to overclock ask at the q&a section of its offical forums here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-3 . cyanogenmod sometimes have the option to overclock their devices, i would check that out as well

OC is a kernel option so simply flash a kernel that allows it. That being said, you're not on the right sub-forum like Trozzul mentioned. Be sure to flash one for your tablet. OC has its disadvantages so make sure you read about it before going through with it.
