This isn't working for me and I'm not sure why. Also, the captivate isn't showing that USB Debugging is connected, even though it's on and ADB via SuperOneClick and detect the phone. Drivers from samsung's webpage are installed as well.

It depends which firmware your Cappy is on.
Refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266 if you want to root and flash custom ROMs.

Honestly this is the best and easiest way. How I did it with my new cappy ^. Worked 100% fine with Captivating X5

I have followed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
and used the kernel they show and then

I am stuck at 69% and obviously I can not reply to that thread
as I just signed up.
Finding update package
Opening update package
Installing Update
Install from sdcard complete.
That's all I get. Tried rebooting.
Any help appreciated. Dead phone.

Superoneclick works alright. I've heard it doesn't root official KB1 yet. I could be wrong Cuz I think the official KB1 is garbage. If you want KB1 then flash cognition.
Sent from my Captivate using XDA Premium
No, I've heard that SuperOneClick is pretty much the "only" way it'll root the official 2.2 KB1.
Ok, I upgraded with kies, and got kb1( uckb1), and I rooted with superoneclick (1.7). No problem at all, but I did use a computer running windows 7.
About ji6. There is now an Odin for UCJI6 (i think it is one click, but not sure). I found the link somewhere in the forum,i don't have it handy.
If I find link, will post.
venomio said:
Yeap, you should be fine to use any of these ODIN files.
2.1 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SBSMALFJ
2.2 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QL6NX702
If you need instructions, just yell again
I would probably recommend the 2.2 one (if you're not going to flash any custom ROMs).
If you are thinking of custom ROMs, then I recommend going to 2.1.

Many thanks to Venomio for these links. He supplied them to me in the course of another problem I had.
Hah funny story
so here is a funny story,
so I flashed using odin back to jf6 and then used kies mini to get to kb1, but halfway through the upgrading process the kies mini force closed and my phone was semi-bricked. I sent it into samsung. it came back, same cosmetic wear, ENTIRE inside of the phone was replaced
Wow. What build number is your Cappy now then?
They sent me one with kb1

[Q] Can't unroot Galaxy S

I roooted my galaxy s some months ago to apply the one click lag fix (Super One Click, v1.6 i think, tho not sure about the version number).
I have since removed the lag-fix and unrooted. The whole process completed without any problems. However, when i tried to update to Gingerbread, it tells me my software version cannot be updated.
When i checked the software details on the phone it has the Kernal as 2.6.32.9 [email protected]8#1
Im pretty sure this still identifies the phone as being rooted.
I tried rooting and unrooting again (this time using v1.9), as before the whole process completed as it should, but nothing has changed on the phone.
I understand that if I flashed the firmware, it would remove the rooting, but would prefer to avoid this route if possible.
The phone is running stock froyo - PDA:JP7 / PHONE: JP3 / CSC: JP5 (TMU)
Any advice on this would be appreciated

Actually the bolded line doesn't indicate whether you're rooted or not. Once you have flash a stock rom via Odin, you're good to go without any root access.
Sorry if I'm being a bit dim... but what holder line?
I'm pretty certain the phone is no longer rooted, but as long as it still has this root kernel on it Kies won't allow it to update.

[Q] ROM Manager Free not in the Market?

I just ODINed back to I897UCJF6 2.1update1 eclair on my captivate and I want to flash some custome roms again. I have flashed multiple roms for example (Firefly,Cognition) but now I cant seem to find the Rom Manger Free app in the market?
I have tried the following:
Market Enablers
Appbrain Market
Sideloading apk (this works but cant connect to clockwork server error)
The only thing i am able to download is the premium rom manager which is just a license.
Any help?
Im running out of ideas here thanks!
Don't waste your time with Rom Manager. Flash a kernel with cwm or load the update.zip with cwm and go from there. Not sure where the update.zip is anywhere but should be somewhere.
Rom manager is completely unnecessary for the captivate
this is the file you need
How do you get Clockworkmod recovery installed with out Rom Manager? I can't see it i the market either.
Wow just wow..... Sticky guide I usually say use the search button, but geezuz christ it would be a good idea to read the stickies on dev, Q&A and General.....

even better, i posted the cwm file in the post directly above his....lol. and not to mention you explained it in the post above that....SMH.
literacy and comprehension would go a long way if the general populous knew what either of those things meant.

Thanks for the guide. Using Rom Manager is the easy way to get CWM installed, but if you totally mess up your cappy like I did, that guide helped me out a lot.
Flashing ODIN 1 click stock, and then following the guide. I had to use Heimdal to get it on but now that I have all the necessary files i can break and rebuild a cappy in 10 minutes. (got a jig also, miracle device, just Ebay'ed Captivate Jig)
Hey guys. I'm sorry to ask. I'm traveling and don't have allot of time. I'm an experienced HTC user my buddy has a rooted cappy but no cwm. I know very little about Samsung. Can I just flash that update zip? The phones on 2.1 and I want to put gingerbread on it. Thanks in advance.

You can use that update zip, but you need new bootloaders for GB. Flash one of the odin/heimdall packages found here. After that just flash a kernel with cwm baked in with odin/heimdall and flash w/e rom you want. Reminder flashing bootloaders can hard brick the phone if connection is lost at the wrong moment or you mismatch bootloaders. Just flash a package that includes them and you should be good. Make sure your cable is good and so forth.. Good luck

You shouldn't need ADB. It should run on 86 and 64 bit OS. Odin is windows only, heimdall is multi platform.

No we can't. Rom manager was never very good with our Galaxy S phones and its gotten worst. +3e recovery its just trash in general. Easier to flash a kernel with it baked in.

What ROM are you running? Anything 2.2 or below can be rooted with super one click but newer ROMs need other methods. If it is a gingerbread ROM (2.3) then there is a thread in development about how to root.

if the computer is recognising your device there should be no error while rooting with soc rooting gb takes much more time than froyo
if you can use odin then you can flash corn kernel which have a cwm recovery and that recovery can also root your device (not all cwm recovery root device)

wrong... I used superoneclick root yesterday. works fine. and takes 2 minutes. faster than your kernel swap.
but you know what? you would be right if you ran the old froyo version on gingerbread... imagine that when gingerbread came out, they updated the tool...

Jut a quick question about the SGH-i957.

I was given a Samsung Galaxy tab 8.9 LTE/sgh-i957 about a year ago for free and it has been pretty good. It is pretty slow compared to new tabs and I don't really need the LTE. My question is should I root it and run a custom ROM or just buy a Nook HD+ for $149.99? I can use hotspots on my phone from anywhere so the internet connection isn't an issue. I am just curious if I will even notice a speed increase on the sgh-i957 with a cleaner non-bloated ROM at it's age.
What version of android are you running now? If it's gingerbread you'll see a large change in performance if you go to ics. Cm10 and ics run about the same on my i957. I'm rooted.

To root do.the following:
Download twrp onto your computer http://d-h.st/dx3 Flash it in Odin, PDA

Best guide for Odin is in the i727 skyrocket development forum. There is a sticky by vincom that is a return to stock / Odin guide. Just follow it with the tab specific files. I'm on my mobile or I'd link you to it. Twrp, you flash just like you would a stock Rom. Pay attention to what what options are checked in Odin. You only want auto, reboot, never re-partition
