Any tips on how to install swype beta? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I desperately miss swype... even with this larger keyboard, I can type faster on my phone because it has swype.
Anyway, I have followed the directions for installing some Google apps without root, and I side loaded dropbox successfully. I am waiting / hoping for a backup method before I try rooting, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone has succeeded in installing swype on their device, root or no?

Installing swype has crossed my mind, but I have not done it yet on the KFHD. I did it with the KF 1st gen and it required rooting and it could get a little messy but once it was up and running, it wasn't a problem. I actually used SlideIT keyboard but right now the stock keyboard is a little pleasing so I haven't switched.

Sideloading doesn't work on keyboards, a rom might be necessary

All you have to do is ask. The method I found was on another board and I don't like to step on toes by cross referencing on another board.

I am revising this post on how I got swype beta installed and working on KFHD, the original KF method is not working since amazon locked out the ability to swap keyboards. This requires your device to be rooted
1) Sign up for Swype Beta on their website and download their installer on your KFHD.
2) Install the Installer APK and Log in
3) Select your Beta version and download
4) Install swype
5) Go to data/apps and move swype apk to system/apps and make sure permissions are rw-r-r
6) Install NookColorTools_0.2.apk found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868366 Link courtesy of timurg
6) Reboot
7) Open NookColorTools and you will be able to select your keyboard. IF you keep getting a Force Close message, just dismiss, go back to system/apps and reinstall swype and force close should stop
8) Enjoy
I was also able to get this method to work with SlideIT keyboard.

So I installed swype beta, as well as nook tools... but when I try to enable swype in its app, it takes me to the default screen for co figuring the built in keyboard. The keyboard selection button in nook tools only lists the default option. Do I need to move the swype apk to system/apps ? If so, can anyone recommend a file manager that will allow me to access that dir without root?
Thanks!

Yes, you have to move apk to the system folder. And no, you can't do this without root.

I did a few installs of swype trying to figure out the cleanest install, as you don't need to move any lib files in your linked post and even though it appeared all the files were removed for another clean install, it still showed up without being in my system/app folder. I will fix my post.

Swype Beta has closed
So I rooted my device in order to try again to get Swype installed. I followed your instructions, however immediately after enabling Swype Beta in the Nook color tools, I get a message that Swype Beta has closed. This repeats every few seconds. Is this the force close error you mentioned? What do you mean by "go back to system/apps and reinstall swype"? I tried deleting the swype-input apk from system/apps and reinstalling the swype beta apk, but it led to the same result. Any advice?

Nevermind -- figured it out
OK, so I tried moving the *installer* apk to system/app (using RootExplorer), then launching said apk (using file expert). Enabled swype in nook color tools and now it's working! hurray!

So, I did install Swype and several other keyboards to check. They all work good in portrait mode. But in landscape mode, the navigation bar closes a part of keyboard. The same happens to all keyboards I tried: Swype, Go keyboard, Swift keyboard. Did Anybody had the same problem?

Yes, I have the same problem. As a partial solution - Smart Keyboard Pro has an option to show arrows on the left edge, so the navigational panel closes arrows and not interferes with the letter block of keyboard.

Swype Default from Swype Installer
Got it installed thanks for the tips! The odd thing is when I downloaded the Swype installer and installed it, it gave me the option right from the Swype page to set as default keyboard and set preferences. I installed Nook Tools before I downloaded Swype (I obviously can't follow directions:laugh, but didn't need to go into it to set the keyboard. Like I said the option to set as default keyboard was in the Swype installer app. Works great - vastly improves my chances of sticking with the KFHD!
I have only tried it in Portrait mode, so can't comment on the Landscape issues (I use my KFHD in Portrait mode about 90% of the time).

Anyone worked out how to fix the hidden part of the keyboard in landscape view?
Thanks!

I got Swype working by installing it then using titanium backup to convert it to system app. I then used nook color tools to choose it as the keyboard. No problems. Well, except for the landscape issue.

You will have to remove it via Titanium Backup. If it still fails to install the APK you'll have to manually log into via adb (or use a terminal emulator) and remove the following:
/system/apps/Swype
/system/lib/libSwype*
That should do the trick. I've just installed a 2.6.x today on my Cappy and it's very nice.
Hi:
I tried to remove via Titanium, that did not work. So, I used Root Explorer and deleted the 2 files. Install was still unsuccessful. So, I used ADB to try to remove, and it says No such file or directory.
Even though I had Swype backed up with Titanium, it will not allow me to restore it, and I am completely unable to install a newer version.
I have searched and can't seem to find the stock Captivate Swype to try to reinstall it.
Any suggestions? I am desperate.
Thanks!

Not a problem...glad it worked. Sometimes people make things more difficult than they need be.
Could somebody post a short step-by-step on how to do this?
I need some help.
I used root explorer to look for the
/system/apps/Swype
/system/lib/libSwype*
files.
I found the libSwypecore file, but i didn't have any Swype files in /system/apps.
I deleted that file after uninstalling Swype using Titanium Backup. No success and I'm confused about what you mean by copying over the files using with root explorer. When I try to install my new version of swype, it asks if I would like to still install it since it's a system app (I'm guessing Swype is still recognized as part of the system). Then...it says it's unsuccessful.
Also, I can't restore for some reason since Titanium Backup doesn't have the option anymore
Where do you go to download the new Swype?
I have 2.4 currently.

2.6.48.....from axura...but I think docs have updated swype as well?...not 100% sure, dont know of a direct download, might be due to the porting it to other devices and xda crackdown on swype downloads
Sent telepathically using vulcan mind meld app.
I believe the beta is 2.10. I haven't found an easy way to download 2.10 as it is only made available to Sywpe beta users and they aren't taking any more applicants at the moment.
I'm really hoping they make 2.10 more available soon...

I've downloaded a modified version somewhere and I deleted system/lib/libSwypeCore.so and also deleted the other two swype components via TiBu. Rebooted and installed the 2.10 apk fine
Also di11igaf's 2.0.1 rom has swype 2.10 in it
So, I uninstalled with Titanium Backup, deleted /system/lib/Swypecore.so. Rebooted my phone
Now, when i try to install the new Swype version, it initially says
"Replace application
The application you are installing will replace another application. All previous user data will be saved."
Ok and Cancel are my two options
I choose Ok of course, try installing and it says Application not installed.
From what I can tell, it seems like the stock Swype is somehow still recognized?
Edit: Nevermind, I got it working. I pushed/copied the files over.
Installed swype 1.60 version (many language packs including Dutch that I needed) by using the copy paste method. Uninstalling via titanium and removing any swype trace and then trying to install it by tapping the .apk didn't work, it just said install not succesful. Sideloading it via Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine gave me an error stating I did not have enough space (i have more than enough), oh well, at least the copy paste method worked. Renamed the 1.60 swype file to Swype.apk and put it in system/app/ and rebooted and worked... Thanks for the help, can finally (looked for a long time) now swype in dutch!
I tried to install and failed
Everybody here talks about "I copied over and it worked"
What do you copy and over what? Could you be more specific?
Just google swype beta and sign up for it and follow the instructions there.
Hi:
Does anyone have the original swype version found on the captivate? I updated it to a newer version some time ago, with help from this thread, but now (starting today) I am getting a message saying that my trial is over, and the "swype" feature is no longer working.
Please help.
Thanks!
UPDATE: I have found several other versions of swype, and uninstalled, and installed several. I seem to be having the same results. They all install, but the"swype" feature doesn't work, only regular typing works. I still have not found the original Captivate version.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again!
UPDATE: Okay, so I uninstalled all Swype using Titanium, then I went to the Swype website, signed up for the beta, and installed. Voila, it's working perfectly now I just hope this version doesn't eventually give the trial is exipred version eventually.

Ok, I managed to get rid of the built in Swype and replaced with the latest Swype beta.
Currently it's version Swype v2.10.52.13753 iirc. You should be able to find it with Google.
Also, u need Titanium Backup or SystemApp Remover, or whatever app you know can uninstall system apps. A filemanager that can delete system files is also needed, like Root Explorer.
I'm using Titanium Backup (the free version should be work fine).
1) First change to another keyboard to be safe.
2) Press the Backup/Restore tab at the top, scroll to Swype. Click on it.
3) To be safe, make a backup of Swype. Then Wipe Data and Delete it. It should be dimmed and marked out after deletion.
4) Using Root Explorer, delete \system\lib\libSwypeCore.so. To be safe, make a copy of it to ur sdcard in case anything goes south.
5) Reboot.
6) Now you should be able to install the latest Swype beta without any problems, you will need to enable it in settings after that to use it.
Did not experience any force closes or quirks so far....hope it works for u guys too. In case of any problems, going backwards to restore libSwypeCore.so and Swype via Titanium Backup shouldn't be too hard.

I found that and 'fixed' it by going to 'Settings > Locale and Text > Swype'
Then when in Swype options, open the speed vs accuracy option and slide the bar all the way to the right to the 'Error Tolerance' side of the slider...this made a significant difference for me.

Seems good to use, like the voice input on this though! Comes in so handy, the pre-installed one didn't have this feature... So far so good, Only I prefered the darker color of the original one, Can this be themed?
another way good for noobs like me....
I managed to get the most current release version working in a more elementary fashion:
1. Uninstall swype as described in previous posts
2. Go to beta.swype.com
3. Register for the download
4. Follow the install guide beta.swype.com/android/welcome/detailed/
Note: make sure you have the standard android internet browser set as your default before following the email link, if it isn't, the download won't work and you will have to delete/uninstall all swype related files again. To set the browser default, go to settings/applications/manage apps/ then scroll to your current browser (for me skyfire), click on it and then select 'clear default'
And after completing all the prompts in the install guide, all should be good! Latest version 3.6.84.26668.t100.26701 just installed and working great for me. Hope this helps, and enjoy not having that freakin irritational "hidden word" tip ever again!

New Swype beta? (2.10)

I downloaded the newest Swype beta and installed it ok, but when I try to swype it says "The Swype package you installed is configured for another device and will operate with limited functionality. Please contact Swype about this issue." I can type individual letters though.

Someone I know had this same issue on an Eris running KaosFroyo (V38 I think) and just ended up going back to the older version. The only advice I can give is you go back to the older version as well.
I've had this issue before. Can't remember how I fixed it though >.<
Have you tried reinstalling with autokiller/taskkiller off?
This happens to many people every time they update. Go into settings and uncheck Swype. Uninstall Swype and the Swype installer. Reboot Phone. Then redownload Installer and install all over again. It should work. Swype recommends clearing your home screens of all widgets too before the reinstall but I have never had to do that. Good luck.

What do you mean wait for browser to come up?
After I download and install from the installer, it apparently installs then goes to the done screen. Is the browser supposed to come up after? Or do i need to press done first? If I press done I get an error that swype is already installed, which I'm sure nothing is, and it doesn't work after. It looks like it might be a known bug on swypes forum.
This is what happens every time I try to use the installer and why I always have to install a hacked version. Guess I'll just have to wait for a hacked one of the new version...

This comes straight from one of the Swype reps on their beta forums.
For anyone getting the “Configured for another device” error, please make sure that when you hit “Done” after Swype finishes installing, you wait for the “Enable Swype” window to appear.
DO NOT press the “back” button when you see the “Start Download” button again. The license file is being generated at the time, and exiting the installer will kill the license download.
I had this exact same problem, and this fixed it immediately.
That doesn't work for me. Either hitting the back button our done button results in the same error. Swype is already installed. Once I enable swype, then I get the configured for another device error. Is apparently a known issue with no work around and why I always just use unofficial copies. Less hassle.

I have no idea how you managed that. If I uncheck unknown sources in the applications menu it does not allow me too load the installer because its not from the market.
I have also used root explorer to eliminate every trace of swype off my system and sd card to no avail.

You can either copy and paste the apk into system/app if you have root explorer or
you are going to have to push it to the system/app folder using adb. Not sure how to use adb, use the guide in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827209

Last night I was messing with trying to install it through the swype beta program. I entered the beta when I picked up my evo last year. The installer put a version on the tab but the actual swype part did not work. Maybe you need to have the swype installer to install this apk directly and work.
Thanks again op. Using it right now to type this.
I've tried installing several keyboards in tnt and I got the same problem with it being able to instal but not being able to select it. I switched my rom to gAdam and now I am able to install swype and other keyboards without issue. It has to be something in tnt that doesn't like other input interfaces to be used. Hope someone can figure out why. I actually like tnt gui.

I think you are right. I have tnt now and swype fc's. I tried Vegan and swype worked just fine, but I couldn't install Gaaps so I went back to tnt.
I used the method in the OP, used Root Explorer to put the .apk into system folder and set permissions, then pressed it to let it install, rebooted (I remember I always have to reboot my nook color to get such things working). I fired up an editor program (Ted), long-pressed the text area to get the "choose input method", selected swype, works great. BTW, I'm running TNT 4.4. No FC's so far.
Awesome!
I'm running VEGAn-Tab (Froyo) and all I did was copy the apk to a folder that I created for programs, browsed to that folder on the G, selected the apk, pushed Install, and working perfect!
Tried it again and it worked with long pressing in a text editor. Thanks.
Worked perfectly. Using it right now!

I downloaded the OP's file, used root explorer to move into /system/app and set permissions to rw-r-r and then installed swype and ted (text editor). Then I rebooted. After reboot, I opened ted and long pressed in TED to choose input method and swype was available. Swype is working 100% with no force closes yet.
glad people are getting it working
I didn't go through everything I did but I figured people could get it working. Thank skyraider

Could you give some details on the permissions needed?
Wooter here, and I am loving this G Tablet! Thanks a lot for getting us Swype, the real easy way.
I'm using VEGAn-TAB 5.1 and it is working flawlessly.
My family laughs at me when I call the G-Tablet my "Droid XL".
Thread closed, as swype is not allowed as a standalone apk, or for a phone/tablet that does not ship with swype. Thank you.

Swiftkey 3 Tablet crashing on Kindle Fire HD 8.9

I've got a real issue here in that I was able to get Swiftkey 3 Tablet installed on a new 8.9 but it is misbehaving and continues to crash and respawn in an endless loop. I have a few seconds in between crashes to navigate around the device and I have tried several things to no avail.
I cannot Force Stop the service. I cannot switch to the default keyboard as there does not appear to be a menu item available for this. I've tried uninstalling but that fails. I've also tried resintalling but it stay in the same state.
Does anyone have experience with forcing the service to stop respawning and to switch the setting back to the default keyboard. If I cannot resolve this issue I will most likely have to reset the device which will cost me many hours in lost time.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
I was able to find a utility on this forum that exposed the Language and Keyboard settings so that I could access the default keyboard again. This eliminated the crash loop. However, I still cannot uninstall Swiftkey. Any ideas?
Did you try to uninstall it with titanium backup?

It's called NookColor Tools but works with Kindle Fire HD as well.

Thanks for the tip. I tried to uninstall with Titanium backup and it did not appear to work. However there was then an uninstall button available in the Installed Applications menu and I was able to get it uninstalled.
This may have also appeared because when I did a reboot an update was applied which appears to have reset some things. One of the things that has changed is that all of the apps that I side installed or installed through the Play Store have disappeared from the Apps menus. It's not an issue since I have Nova Launcher installed and everything still shows in there.
So the issue with getting Swiftkey to work properly still remains and I sure am having withdrawl from not having this app. If anyone has any ideas or a procedure on how to get that to work it would really be helpful.
But I cannot customize Nova apparently and add icons to the desktops. What a pain. Still looking for solutions to get this all running smoothly.
i managed to get it working after finding this instruction http://blog.wuepics.de/2012/11/swiftkey-auf-dem-kindle-fire-hd/#axzz2GznJiTxt
unfortunately it is in german but the gist of it is
install swiftkey (via play store or side loading?)
find the apk file (data/app likely)
using es explorer click and hold the apk file until you see the options
select view
go into the lib folder > armeabi-v7a
extract libswiftkeysdk-java-internal to somewhere you ll find it (download folder...)
copy the extracted .so file in lib/armeabi-v7a to system/lib
copy app from data/app to system/app
click to install in system/app (not sure if needed, i did any way. sorry i am kindle/android noob )
change permissions to user read/write, rest read only (same permission as the other apps)
reboot kindle
go to keyboard settings, select swiftkey3
no more crashes.
unfortunately the kindle menu overlaps the keyboard a little bit in landscape mode. but to me that is just a minor inconvenience.
hope this helps.

That doesn't seem to do anything for me. Each time my kindle reboots, I have to go to system\apps and reinstall Swiftkey in order to get it to work. If I don't, I'll get keep getting that error msg "****key Tablet has stopped"
Has anyone figured a solution to this?

After I read the response that the link was ONLY in German, I went to that site, and allowed my pc to translate it into English. This is what
I found:
In order to perform these steps is root access required.
Instructions
1 Charge here "NOOKcolor Tools" and installs it on the KFHD
2 Now go download your desired Tastaturapp on the Kindle.
3 Now open your file browser on the KFHD (eg ES Explorer )
4 Examined the copied in step 2 Tastaturapp
5 Keep it pressed to the apk., And choose "view"
6 Opens the "lib" folder
7 Opens the armeabi-V7A folder and select the . "so" file (!) from.
8 Click on "Extract". You possibly can you choose the path.
9.Geht now to the folder where you . "so" you extracted files and copy all the files into the / system / lib directory
10 Installed . "apk" the Tastaturapp and copied the . "apk" from the / data / app folder to / system / app Verzechnis
11.Startet the KFHD and opens new NOOKcolor Tools.
12th Now you can your keyboard to select under "Select Keyboard".
13th Ready!

Now is it reliable? I don't know, but if you pay attention to the FIRST LINE, it states ROOT ACCESS IS REQUIRED. I have not rooted my Kindle Fire HD 7", so I can't try it out. But for those who have rooted their Kindle Fire, maybe you can try this. The site I had translated, http://blog.wuepics.de/2012/11/swiftkey-auf-dem-kindle-fire-hd/#axzz2GznJiTxt, is the site that was given. Good luck if you try it. ffman2152
