I think I recieved a debugging unit... - Nexus 7 General

Just picked up a 16GB Nexus 7 from Staples in Canada and I find some odd things are going on with my device. All of the Development options were ticked when I booted it up, Gapps are not installed, it is running Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, the model number shows "ME370T" (The cancelled Asus tablet that became the Nexus 7) and in the app drawer there is just a strange list of unknown (to me) debugging applications. I will attach a photo. The tablet was sealed in the box and is still covered by protective film.

Anyone have any explanations for this? It's very strange to me. I'm not sure if I should take it back or not, but i'd like to get some details if anyone knows anything.

You're not the only one:

I think there was at least one other guy who posted about this too.
Very strange

Very odd. Is it the same other that that

I wonder if this could be of some use for the devs then. I can easily take it back and swap it for another Nexus 7, but if there could be something useful on the device, i'd rather sell it to someone in the know. Private message me if anyone is interested in this unit.

Is it the same hardware? Thanks
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

Yes it seems to be the same hardware yet I can't find anything out really. I really don't feel like modifying it in any way right now, even though I am experienced with Android.

couldn't you do a back up and give devs access to that? and go ahead and return the device. idk maybe that won't work
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2

The thing is it doesn't recognize as a Nexus 7 when connected to my PC. It shows it as an ME370T so the Nexus 7 Toolkit will not back it up or root it.

Wow. Does ICS at least run well

No nothing really works, even the camera does not function...

Well you could go out of your way to get the stock jb running on it, assuming it has all the same hardware, it should work just fine. But I really wouldn't bother and just take it back.
Maybe hook it up to adb and do a full backup for reference, just in case.

I bet someone bought a nexus 7 and returned to the store what you have now. Many asshats with xbox360's that had been banned were doing something similar. They buy a new xbox360, do a 'gut swap' with their banned unit and then return the thing to the store.
Rob

No it was a sealed unit

Make a full backup with a adb before you return it though. Contents could be interesting.

If it doesn't have any of the known issues just keep it and reimage with official stock.

Can you please make a full dump of the system and upload somewhere, I would love to get my hands on that Android build

Put it on eBay, you might make some profit

could you use astro file explorer and make backup apks of the "apps" it has?

The "special apps" are standard engineering build (=dev/debug) apps.
For one they are present on all emulators that come with the Android SDK and they are build with and included in when you build an Android from sources as "engineering build", which is kinda the dev-version.
However a dump of the whole system (tarball or dd raw dump of the partitions) would be nice to have, I hope the OP is willing to make one

Why do you have to do it with the toolkit, just get the sdk and do it. There are probably root methods for ICS devices that would work on it.

Minidump file - anyone lend a hand reading it?

I just had a BSOD – freaked me out because I'm working on assignments at the moment and a dead PC would be disastrous.
I tried installing the debugging tool to read it but it tells me it couldn't locate the file path during installation – its sounding like its just not liking its own install exe...
I'm using Windows Vista, and I did go for the right version as far as I'm aware, so I'm not sure what's going on. I tried downloading it again etc, no luck. I'll probably spend as much time trying to sort out the debugging tool's issues as working out a solution for whatever caused the crash... so...
If someone who has the debugger installed is feeling like generating some positive karma for themselves by doing a quick read-over as to suspected problem I'd be immensely grateful (this doesn't do justice to how grateful I'd be...)
minidump is below:

Thanks again!

Use Windows 7 or XP.
Usually a normal restart works. Although, it might be a good idea to find out the reason for the BSOD.

Yeah, well aware of Vista's issues. Its been pretty much fine, until this BSOD.
Parents' PC is XP but not at home for a few weeks, and have assignments to do in that time, hence wanting to know if there's something I should be doing to stop a more catastrophic event...
Just one BSOD?
Wouldn't crap your pants over that to be honest..............

Nope.
The reason I'm more concerned about this BSOD is that my graphic card has had a tendency to overheat if I play games and shuts itself off to prevent damamge, and even with simple things like word processing / net surfing it sits in the 70sC if I don't force the fan up to 60%.
Case cover is off to help - it started happening after coming back from holidays. Cleaned it out best I could but didn't help the overheat issue, so some mysterious thing happened to it while I was gone.
If it is the graphic card that's caused that BSOD then I need to seriously bring forward my plans to upgrade my PSU to get a newer card before it causes any significant dmage to other parts.
I was putting it off until holidays (in 3 weeks now, but been happening since Feb).
It's things like this that make me glad that I've stayed on xp for all these years. Have you tried a restore point? I think it could be your graphics card doing it when it shuts itself down.

Can we have a windows 8 rt port? the arquitecture is the same ARM , so its possible isnt?
You realize Windows is a closed source commercial product? Even in the off chance someone managed to ported it there is ZERO ways for it to be made available to the public without breaking 1000 laws
and windows phone 8?
The exact same thing.
You will not be seeing a port.

If you manage to emulate EFI stuff, or whatever bootloader Windows tablets use, something could happen. Even then, there would be plenty of driver issues.
However if you manage to make it usable, it should work just fine. You won't be able to snap apps, though, due to N7 having a lower resolution than 1366x768.

The HTC HD2 actually ran Microsoft software originally, so it's possible the drivers were actually compatible.
The Nexus 7 has never had any Microsoft OS running on it.

Another one of these threads... great. Never gonna happen. Closed source, no drivers, N7 does not meet the hardware specs even if Redmond did sell just licenses, and so on and so forth.
Not to mention it would be a cut and dry legal issue since the one and only way you'd see it outside of being preinstalled on a retail device is warez . Historically, the folks in Redmond have been pretty aggressive in protecting their flagship OS. Given that they've heavily vested the future of the company in 8, it's a given that the trend is going to continue,

[Q] Software Version XE13?

I have a Google Glass unit, and it reports the software version XE13. This same Glass unit doesn't have a working USB port either (it's broken).
Is there anything of interest I could check out?
As for what I noticed:
- The shutdown screen sometimes (maybe always) shows an outline of red and blue

This is a Home Trial device. Google breaks the USB ports, so they can't be charged. The XE13 software is a slightly updated version of XE12.
Did you buy it from Google, or from someone on ebay or such?
TheManii said:

(im not sure how easy this part would be without a working usb port, you would normally simply "adb pull /system" if it worked)
I doubt that there is an ota for it to begin with, they likely never made a patch for it since it isnt public.
(unless the glass team's policy differs from the standard android one) they generally do not make otas for combinations that they would not expect in the wild
Normally if this were a nexus device, the course of action would be to just use the factory image, but like you mentioned the usb port isnt able to be detected by a pc.
If you can root it without using the usb port, it might be possible to manually get CWM loaded on it and update with a manually made update zip. But without a usb port, if anything goes wrong then it would be very difficult to recover from that.

When you say 'I got my kit from google." Do you mean the explorer's program, or did you buy it for the full price? You can't update/flash from XE13, since the USB port is broken. Neither can you set up ADB over TCPIP. OTA's are unavailable too, since XE13 is not allowed to receive OTA's.

My Nexus retourned to me from the assistance with Android Key Lime Pie

I am holding a Nexus 5 with a beta test operating system, Android Key Lime Pie. Probably it was the trial for KitKat.
I saw that something similar had already happened to one user MOD EDIT but unlike its my version is a bit different - as you can see from the system information attached - and my nexus is fully functional except for some sporadic bug system. I also have access to some menus of testing and development.
I uploaded a video on Youtube MOD EDIT where you can see the special features of this version of the operating system.

There's no such thing as rare software. Hell, if you want to, you can make more of them yourself. That's if you find enough (any?) people to make it worthwhile.

Dexcom g6 app

As a type 1 diabetic, I use the dexcom g6 along with my insulin pump to manage things. I've been using an s7 edge for years now and it's been a great experience. The phone finally crapped out and I decided on the pixel 4 xl. Love this phone. What I don't love is that the dexcom app doesn't work for it. I saw another thread about modification to the app itself to get it to be functional and rooted the phone in preparation. I'm stumped about the proper steps to modifying an app to work with this phone though. Would anyone care to assist in my project to get my Dexcom app for working with this pixel 4XL? It would be greatly appreciated.

You should contact the developers to update the app. I don't see why it wouldn't be compatible if they listed the 3 older Pixel phones. It's really deceiving that the Play Store listing let's you install the app yet says not compatible when you open it.

The problem isn't the Pixel 4XL. The problem is the app will not work with android 10.0. My wife uses this app also. She was using it on the Pixel 2. As soon as it was updated from Android 9.0 to 10.0 the app just wouldn't work. We both have Pixel 4 XL's now. She kept her Pixel 2 and downgraded it to 9.0 just so she could run the dexcom app. I've emailed the developers about updating it to be compatible with 10.0 but I've only received a generic response that they will in the near future. That was almost 5 months ago.
I see the thread you are referring to and that is not a modification to the app/apk. This is simply a hack to modify the build.prop file on your device to make the app think it is a different (older device), and some fixes to a file the app uses probably to restrict running on what they deem incompatible devices. If you follow the instructions on the thread, it sounds like you should be able to get this working.
You do not edit the apk, you need to edit the build.prop on your device (use something like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.buildpropeditor). Reboot after so it becomes active. Then install the app using a file explorer and selecting the apk. Next you will need to copy the xml file that is modified where he mentions, and rename it. That is it...

I know this is probably a dead thread, but for anyone who finds it while googling for pixel 4 dexcom, you can make your own modded version that skips the Android version check, as well as some other cool features, here https://www.reddit.com/r/diabetes/comments/fqvmng/oc_build_your_own_dexcom_app_update_base_version/
