Can't kill apps?? Then kill their receivers - Galaxy Tab 2 Themes and Apps

Every Android user is obsessed with battery. Now battery consumption depends on two things
1)How u use the phone/tablet(Obviously)
2)The apps you use(also obviously)
U can get the maximum battery if the apps closed after their use was over or if the apps didn't open when we didn't want them. But fortunately/unfortunately this doesn't happen in android. Instead apps may start on their own using something people call 'Receivers' and keep wakelocks which consumes battery. This maybe good as some apps need to sync. But maybe sometimes there is no need for that.So if we can kill these receivers then we can save huge amounts of battery.
You are going to require ROOT for this method to work. There are many apps which let you kill receivers but most of them kill specific ones. I use Autorun manager which lists all of them. But its not free. So get the full version
1)open the app and go for advanced
2)It will list all the apps with receivers
3)search for the apps which have a receiver for CONNECTIVITY CHANGE and BOOT. U will have to search manually. Click on an app, then click at it receivers to see if they start for connectivity change.
4) now disable only those receivers whose apps don't need to start automatically
5)continue like that. U can also close receivers for package(apk) modification
6) you can close receivers for system apps by enabling in settings but that's risky and don't touch any app unless u r sure that its safe to close its receiver
There are apps (lidroid toolbox and rom toolbox) which will allow you to directly kill receivers for boot and connectivity change but they won't list all receivers. Additionally u can kill other receivers by using own intelligence.
Remember every action has a reaction.

Will this work for my phone galaxy exhibit 4g an can u make a safe list

Would using a start up manger do the same thing , something like this or this ?
Thanks for the original tip , will be sure to try that one out.

Startup manager just disables boot receivers. Rom toolbox is better and easier. But not efficient. it itself has receivers which sucks battery but doesn't allow to disable them

If You r new to this thing then don't go to system apps modification. limit urself to downloaded apps. This method disables receivers meaning they won't start automatically but u can start them wen u need(that's great)
1)If u use Facebook or friendcaster then disable boot and network change and connectivity change and any other except the C2dm receivers.
2)Some backup managers and file managers have package modification receiver. close that. but don't close schedule receivers
its just using common sense. Don't touch anything which looks important. Like sms receiver for sms apps. If u disable them then u won't get notifications

taskiller 1.5 doesn't work on my G2... killing apps really needed?

Hi,
I've installed taskiller 1.5 on my G2 but it doesn't seem to work when I try to stop all applciations.... well he closes everything in the TasKiller list which is fine but when I long-press the home button I still see applications in the "normal" application list which aren't visible in the TasKiller list...
Any idea? I've already reinstalled it... is it possible that the reason is that my G2 isn't rooted?
Any other great applications to close all open app (preferably with an exclusion list)?
Thx!
B
I dont think those apps necessarily are running. It just displays the ones recently used.
Hi,
At first your G2 must be rooted !
After that this application works lovely
well the killing in taskiller works, but I still see applications when I long-press the home button...
can someone say for sure if these applications are running or if they are just the "recently-used" list?
I also heard that applications in the background are "idle" in android and don't consume any battery, RAM or CPU... can someone confirm this?
thx
B
hi, I am the taskiller's developper.
First : the home button display most recently used apps.
Second : taskiller display all runnings app (and service) except "system", "android core", and phone app (because some guys kill the phone app for test : system will crash sometimes after)
Theses apps are maybe idle and dont consume cpu (but have allocated memory), maybe I will add feature to display the status.
Hi, maybe you can exclude the alarm clock as well from the kill-list because I've noticed when setting an alarm, and using taskiller afterwards the alarm doesn't go off anymore!
cheers

Yes I know but it's limited at 2 app and already used
I sent an email to the developer to include this feature (alarm) in the next release.
next release will automatically ignore the alarm, and remove it from the ignore list, I post it on the market as soon as possible (I try another feature before ^^)

My G2 not rooted, TaskKiller works fine.
Thanx "horb" for this App
Hero and Taskiller..
I have used the Taskiller full version on my HTC Magic, and was always very satisfied with it; now, the same feeling with Taskiller on my new HTC Hero. But, one question, maybe somebody can help me:
I guess due to the Hero's extended UI, there are several new, repeating processes on the Taskiller list (com.htc.provider, com.htc, com.htc.dcs, etc) which I have never seen on the Magic. Could somebody (Taskiller developers?) please provide a list of the essential Hero-specific processes, which should be put on the ignore list on the HTC Hero?
Thanks in advance.

Black screen during call

Hi,
I'm wondering to know if you know application to avoid black screen during calls for the HTC Hero.
RucaNebas
Yes. On the app store there is a free app called Shake Awake. It detects the movement of pulling the phone away from your ear and activates the screen. The sensitivy can be adjusted.
Thank you very much for your quick replay Paul.
I installed and it seems to work.
Thank you again.
Do you know where I can find cool applications for our Hero?
RucaNebas
Wow, this works very nice.
Thank you

You're very welcome.
I have so far only installed apps from the Android Market.
Excellent find.
Not working on HTC Hero :-((
Do you know why?
Yeah, didn't work on the Hero. I hope they fix that with the update and also that annoying vibrate when the phone connects. While interesting concept it is really not needed. I figure I know when it connects when the other person says hello.
You can use Keepscreen, there is a lite version ;-)
Hi,
you may use the free app calle KeepScreen Lite, too.
This app lets you choose for which apps you want the screen always stay on.
The Hero uses a specific phone app, whose name is different from google standard phone app ... But KeepScreen lets you manually choose the apps you want.
There are two versions of keepscreen : the free one (called lite), which is 'limited' to standard google apps, and two of user's chose. The pay version is unlimited.
edit : bricabrac : you won this one
Thank you guys.
I'm sorry to back again, but I need to understand your explanations.
Do you mean that the KeepScreen Lite application could be installed on the Hero and activates the screen during calls?
Which is the Hero app name that keeps the screen always stay on during calls?
I had already created a thread with regard to the screen switching off during a call here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547736
Shakeawake doesn't seem to work for all and for those it does it can be unreliable.
PowerManager can be set (in a profile) to keep the screen alive when making a call for up to a minute (specify by number of secs... I think) which gives you plenty of time to get past those 'pick 1 to do ... pick 2.... etc' type calls.
Hope this helps
how do i install this " shake awake" program on my foon! new 2 andriod

KeepScreen
if i'm not mistaken the actual phone app should be named "Dialer"
KeepScreen is now completely free, and has in the free version all functionality
ahm, can anyone tell me how do i turn the screen off again after i awoke it? my ear keeps checking notifications :/
fyi...on my hacked sapphire, keepscreen was a little buggy. it would sometimes still allow dialer app to go dark while on call even with the keepscreen app running as confirmed in both notification bar and running apps. also, when rebooting phone, keepscreen requires restart but that is probably normal. for me, i decided i rather not deal with the problem of occasional face/key-press on long calls and just let the device go dark. i've become familiar with the quick-key presses to handle call-swap, speaker-on, and such...
I have shake awake since a while and it works fine.
Keepscreen is nice to keep applications "awake"

Is there an app for this ? Block data access to app(s)

As far as I understand, with 2.2 task killers became almost useless in killing tasks.....correct me if I am wrong....
I have some apps on my phone that use lots of data connection and drain battery and every time i kill them, they come back again. So I was thinking instead of killing the app, maybe i can prevent in from accessing data connection. Is there an app for this ?
Can you tell me where you got that info about task killers not working in froyo? Cause I've noticed that And can't find any info about it.

I had Advanced Task Manager and developer noted that in 2.2 OS works differently and therefore task manager doesnt really do the job. Then in here, market comments, and google, i also found the same info.
droidwall is a firewall for rooted phones works good as long as you remember to turn to add or remove exceptions.
theres also apn droid that turns data on/off out right

I see. I got the same response from the system panel developer. I made a thread about it here but didn't get all the answers.
Do you know if this is a permanent change with the way froyo handles apps and multi tasking? Or is this just something temporary because It's not the final froyo release? I'm very curious.

I did this with my old Droid. I just used the latest build of CM7 for it. You can use the power widget that is included with CM7 and select the Disable Mobile Data option. Some homescreen apps, like LauncherPro, can hide apps from the drawer, so you could hide Phone/Contacts/etc. This worked well for me.

But he does not want to hide the apps, he wants to disable the telephone function, right? The only way to realize this is using the airplane mode ...
Sorry getting back to this soo late....busy week of work.
My plan is to use this for my 4yr old as a teaching device. Reading/Writing/math with Time limits/etc...The idea would be that phone/gps would be permanently off, wifi enabled.
Looking into the Parental Control App too.

why dont u try freezing or uninstalling the dialer ...idk if it can cause any problems with the system haven't tried doin it
Use a custom launcher like ADW and remove any shortcuts to the phone and contact apps. That way your kid can't accidentally dial 911.

MLT apk disable or remove - LG is watching you

LG seems to have included a snooper app "MLT" which per default is enabled, and probably serves purpose to help LG remote support, but it tries to track all your activity and logs GPS position together with the details gathered, and that includes calls, apps starting, removing etc...
all data is collected and placed on /mpt partition, it seems not to be per reboot, but actually kept during flash and upgrades.
i sugges you disable this(maybe already is on 4.0.3) MLT.apk + MLT.odex and reboot or disable in hidden menu (3845#*880# -> MLT -> disable)
why track all your moves on the phone, and basically make it slow as well?
btw, this is also on 4.0.3, and not only on latest 4.1.2 stock.

Wow thanks for the hint...
So you think they spot unlocked bootloaders with that or even root?
...sent with my LG Optimus 4X HD...
Thank you! So theoretically, disabling this should help performance, right?

no, i just fell over the /mpt partition and saw all the data together with the IMEI in serial file, but it does not change anything.
it can be something enables it or something else.
thx for Info Dex.
Now i need to install new sniffer to find so bad tools too.

Maybe you can view these activities better in logcat or another debug? It probably wont show exactly what data is going out to LG, but it still may be interesting to see how active the app is.

ok,
looking more into the MPT_MainData.db , it is only tracking data from 4.1.2 , so even if app is on 4.0.3, the /mpt must be cleared when you flash a new kdz that is only good news but still little strange.

sounds like its just a tracker to prevent stolen dev phones and spot/track possible leaks during development.
atleast that would make sense.
i doubt this will be o in the final version i think its just for internal use.
Doesn't seem to exist on CustoNexus

correct, as this custom rom is based on OneX release, and primarily CM10 related, no malware or tracking except their debugging thing.

How did you manage to get 450mb free? I disabled a lot of things including the MLT but still get only about 270mb free RAM.
Using One Power Guard I optimized the CPU to work at 51MHz to 1000Mhz.. even after disabling several services using ROM Manager, the CPU never goes into Deep Sleep or even the 51MHz mark. And the battery life now has degraded pretty bad. 7 - 8 hr max which include just 1hr of gaming and 30 min of calls and SMS.
OFFTOPIC:
I've got 550MB of free RAM. And haven't tweaked nearly anything despite disabling MLT. Take a look at all your installed apps. There has to be one preventing the system to go into deep sleep.
