Flash player and file access questions... - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm interested in the Lumia 920 and have an upgrade coming up from my GS2. However there are two things I need from a Mobile, Flash Player and direct file access to my phone. I want to be able to watch Sky F1 Live Stream coverage when I'm away and most Youtube videos still use Flash Player, trying to view Youtube on a non desktop version of the site is just painful. Using my friends iPhone made me realise just how much Flash Player is needed, which I never noticed until I didn't have it. I don't care about the haters saying it's crap, until it isn't used any more, it will be needed for me personally. Also again I don't want to have to use software to be able to drop files to and from my phone, I just want it to be like a Hard Drive on a PC when you plug it in.
Thanx.

WP will never support flash and WP8 does not support direct file access.

Windows phone not been rooted or jail broken or whatever you wanna call it yet? If not I wont bother, hate being told how to use my phone, why I don't like the iPhone.
I love how open Android is and it does everything I want but I just find the handsets to be horrible lol.
Surely someone will just release Flash for Windows Phone that you can install yourself?

Even android turned it's back on flash recently and adobe stopped developing mobile flash player so it's pretty much guaranteed that it won't come to WP. I personally wouldn't put my money on anyone developing a flash player for WP.
A lot of WP7 phones have gotten a jailbreak but since WP8 is based on a new kernel and will come with stuff like secure boot it should be quite tough to jailbreak it. We will just have to wait and see.
It seems like android is the only option for you if you really need the openness.

So guys are telling we can't access and use the internal sdcard as we want. Can we explore the files of the external sd from an file explorer app on the phone? Can we install apps from pc like we can done in android (adb install Facebook.apk) or directly from sdcard/extsdcard?Those are very important for me if I'm gonna buy a wp8 phone.

Microsoft has the source code for Flash and is reportedly bundling it in IE10 for Windows RT.
http://www.winsupersite.com/article...-internet-explorer-10-ship-adobe-flash-143180
If I remember correctly, it is more limited and runs on white-listed sites for security reasons.
Presumably, MS could add it to WP8 too if they wanted.

Noone knows yet. I think that it will, because the leaked sdk have storage api.

Good news http://www.wpcentral.com/does-windows-phone-8-have-usb-mass-storage-support-course-it-does
This thread answered most of my questions

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/09/28/lumia-820-qa-your-questions-answered/ go to question about USB otg, it confirms file management.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

That's the 820... I don't get why that has a Micro SD slot and the 920 doesn't...
I dunno the whole thing smells like a half arsed attempt to me, I'll pass and stick with my GS2 and just wait for something perfect to come along.
Really give me the Lumia design with GS3 specs and Android and I'll be happy.

I guess the most accurate answer would be that WP8 does not support hot swapping - you can't remove the card while the phone is still powered on. For the Lumia 820 the SD-Card can only be removed if you remove the battery first. Given that the 920 has a fixed battery and a Unibody Design this would not be easily enforcible. That's just a theory though.

two months from now, when the shinny'ness wares off, you'll miss your pocket pc/smartphone
to hiimclif:
My brother bought an iphone today and was previously using a cingular 8125 and the iphone is so far above the technology of anything i have ever used. Don't get me wrong im sure its not a good comparison of the two phones. But within just the 10 minutes i was able to play with it i truely found it to be far supperior to any current ppc/smartphone. The design and layout is so much more fluent then windows its rediculous. im sure your much more knowledgable about everything, but as a normal user and not a hardcore junkie about everything i would never see myself going back to my cingular 8125. And im not biased towards anything i havent owned an apple product in my life but i can truely say this is an amazing piece of technology that blows The HTCtouch and what i believe just about everything else out of the water
lol Thats cuz you had a 8125.. Get a Hermes and tell me how much you would never go back to PPC. .
I don't have any plans to drop my Athena.
Iphone is a smartphone and that's it.
It's finn, and very fast,
Now I need to unlock, anybody?

Hey, can you tell me about the hermes. you are talking about the 8525 right?
Is the processor 400mhz a big difference to the 8125, 200mhz.
Is it also USB 2.0 transfer. I really hate the 8125's slow usb 1.0 transfer. Have to take my card out of the phone and use a seperate reader to transfer my moviez and songs.
btw, any sim unlocker avail for this iphone ?
iPhone doesn't have a SIM card.

Does a hell of a lot more stuff than my old dialphone does. At what point does a phone become smart? Email? Contacts? Address book you can edit? Internet access? VPN and webapps? Desktop-derived operating system?
SDK doesn't make the device a smartphone. You couldn't run anything on the UK-Market Three A925, unless Three published it - sure, you could get a Symbian SDK from somewhere for UIQ, but Three didn't make it "legal" or "easy" to get UIQ apps onto the device.
I think most people will agree the existence of an SDK doesn't not define a define as a smartphone.
I read somewhere the lack of 3G is actually due to the Qualcomm chip injunction. Wonder if there's a grain of truth in that...
Phone becomes smart when you can develop & install native third-party applications for it, that blends unlimited functionality of personal computer into phone platform.
Otherwise its just an ordinary phone - every phone have an OS and set of default applications inside, some very rich, hovewer these are not smartphones.
Btw, there is no probs in getting devkits for UIQ. Currently the main hassle is mandatory signing, but its still not closed platform. IPhone is.

I think what he meant was the iPhone doesn't have a REMOVABLE SIM card. There isn't a way to access it (although I'm sure you could if you pulled the phone apart) because the battery also ISN'T removeable along with there being no back cover. This phone is just one big 'thing'.

Umm, if its a CDMA phone, its no wonder it have no SIM card.
SIM card is GSM thing, CDMA phones do not use "cards".
Some real Facts
Ok Guys, some real facts regarding my Iphone:
-of course there is a SIM Card. (cames with a blank sim card to activate via Itunes)
-Yes it's a smartphone, Why? Because you can install and unistall widgets applications (just like Mac OS widgets)
-Do not record VIDEOS (So youtube it's only to vivew some videos) maybe next firmware update will enable the camera to record
At this moment I'm trying to hack the device and Itunes to unlock my device, Do you guy know any other forum ? maybe like iphone-developers... I will post my review at

A lot of ordinary phones allow to install java applets, hovewer it does not make them smartphones.
As with iPhone widgets these are not true native applications, as they run in "sandboxed" environment and do not have the full access to phone hardware and OS features.
Apple declared already that they *maybe* will consider "opening" the iPhone and making it a true smartphone, but they said that "we will need to sort out security issues first".

Who said no flash 10.1 for the slide.

Been a lurker for a while now. This is worthy of my first post. I found a flash 10.1 apk and it works. Not incredibly fast for flash games but it does work. I cant post links but I think you can figure it out.
getandroidstuff.com/2010/06/adobe-flash-101-full-support-for.html
Now I did not make this and don't know who did so use at your own risk. I have only been playing with it for a day and haven't seen any ill effects yet. All I know is it works.
" Android 2.2 comes with the new feature for full flash support. Here how it's work google just integrated a plugin called com.google.android.feature.GOOGLE_PLUGIN. And Flash uses it to embed itself inside browser. So browser in android 2.1 mobile phones does not see plugin. Now if you are owner of Android 2.1 or 2.0 smartphone then download the Adobe Flash 10.1 apk application below and get full flash support for your Android 2.1 or 2.0 mobiles.
BUT!There's another thing inside - a permission called android.webkit.permission.PLUGIN. It is already used by Flash Lite on HTC devices. So this app will replace the lite version of flash and will work with full feature.
Or get it here:

The website speaks of this being for 2.1.
No wonder it doesn't work for a froyo rom.
The real question is when can we get flash on cm6 rc1???
I installed flash 10.1 from 4shared and after I tried it, i couldnt stay in the browser for long without it closing right back out.
I uninstalled it and it was fine.

currently the working adobe flash 10.1 release is primarily working only on devices bearing the "snapdragon" ARM processors... so when we're trying to force install this onto our devices it is either crashing, or not even allowing the install.
The flash 10.1 currently doesn't even allow the 1ghz hummingbird... its all a matter of time before a "general" release is going to be available. (i'm assuming)
I believe i've seen it said before and i quote;
"Adobe and Google working together to bring Flash player to a mobile device needs to be considered a "sensitive" port, unwelcome criticism on whether or not it will be necessary or whether this will start a revolution for future devices to follow depends on the ability to have Flash functioning flawlessly on the Android platform"
This means that all those Apple boys & gals who say "flash is pointless" yada yada... can't say "SEE THATS WHY FLASH IS USELESS" (implying that it will not work)
just my 2 pennies worth.

I didn't bother reading that whole post, primarily because I saw that you said that Flash wasn't pointless, but you are slightly incorrect.
The Slide's processor = ARM6
Requirement for Flash 10.1 = ARM7
IQ drop associated with mobile Flash = 72

Notice I said "snapdragon" and not just ARM, also flash in mobile is more of preference rather than necessity... hence the reason it can, or cannot be downloaded even with devices that are able to install it.
(and yes I do understand another reason for 3rd party install is to push updates without the need for a full firmware update)
Myself I personally like the idea of flash operating on a mobile device due to having my work email, which is primarily flash driven being able to access it with my personal phone. Using stock sense 2.1, I was able to do so, with Froyo on slide I'm unable to do so. (so back to the PC for me now)
So, as far as an IQ drop with the association of flash... if you have a mobile piece of software effecting your physical abilities then you really have a true issue, that needs immediate medical attention.
I just want to have the damn option of being able to use it.
is there any way to get the flash from the stock rom onto cm6

I'm pretty sure Flash lite only works for sense
I think the only reason I would ever need full Flash support would be for Robot Unicorn Attack and maybe some physicsgames.net.
I still agree with the number one reason for people to have flash is for them to watch porn. Do not argue about the statment i just said, you and i both know its true.
But with the new info about higher-end phones soon to have divx support in the flash well thats just amazing. Of course without great service your pretty much screwed but say we had great service as well as the opportunity to use this feature wouldn't you take advantage of this at work on break and watch some movies and what not? I sure would.

You pervs stop the porn thing, that's probably the reason we don't get full flash!
And flash games?? Are you kidding!!! Don't waste time on those crappy-ass games!
There are many other reasongs why would we want full flash,
Has anyone thought of the streaming tv viewing channels ability! Or streams of radio stations, which some work over flash player 10.1
One could watch Live TV!!!
Think of the real benefits of flash.
Well, stock flash on 2.1 works with many sites with medium/small flash videos, but not Live Streams...
One of the reasongs why I won't flash a Froyo rom, I want Sense and Flash!
Just my opinion

Still missing in mango!

Well we all are having few difficulties and wish list for after mango.
So if we add them here again in one place then DFT people can actually know whats the best thing people need badly right now.
for me these few are missing badly:
1) a full features google maps.
2)skype (for godsake atleast an app? IM just sucks after mango!)
3)wireless keyboard( bluetooth )
4) connect my laptop and phone via ad hoc network
5)find on page in IE9.
6)flash ( i dont think its gonna come)

8)If there are a bunch of developers want to make some windows phone games then let me know i am thinking to heed in that direction.
9)connect phone via HDMI cable to any Television screen ( i am on HD7)
i want outlook offline sync like with winmo 6.5

hummm let me tell you why.
On the hardware part HD2 AND HD7 are similar but still there are some features and a kickass stand which makes HD7 a better choice.
WP7 is damn good but at the end its a new OS so it still lacks some of the basic features like skype and flash which are easily available in android.
so if you have the freedom to dual boot it the WP7 can work as primary and whenever you are going to get some things off the shelf you can switch to Android.
Build quality of HD2 is not upto the mark compared to the HD7.
So tell me one reason why android should not be there in a WP7 phone?

Android should not be on a WP7 phone as its a windows phone, if you want an android phone, just go and buy one, get a case with a kick stand on it and jobs done.
on another not, the google maps thing you mentioned, thats not down to microsoft, thats down to google not providing it. once again you could just get an android phone and be done with it.
I got both and have both as each have advantages over each other. my sim is generally in my android at the moment as it seems more logical, i can tether it to my windows phone and play my xbl games and download music and do what i want with my windows phone. and for the rare instances that i actually make a phone call, use my android handset.
oh and build quality, much better on hd2, made out of metal body rather than plastic, and better buttons too. not that the hd7 isnt bad but the hd2 was one of the best ive seen for a long time

to my knowledge you are using an HD2 with android build.
You are against porting android on a WP7 phone but at the end you are using android on a windows mobile.
if you wanted android why did you buy HD2 in the first place?
i think now you get my point that its always better to have choices.
See i dint start this thread for this android battle as i mentioned i started so that DFT guys know whats hot and they can work on that in the first place in their custom ROMs.
So if you want me to say android shouldnt be there OK YOU WIN!! but atleast stick to the topic.

Since when are skype/flash support basic features of any phone?
whats the point of a smartphone if it cannot give me one complete on the Go web experience?
For current scenario Flash atleast for next few years is necessary for uninterrupted web experience.
and skype is ofcourse gonna be a basic function!
you not discussing about the 10$ phones so obviously you CANNOT list calculator and making call as basic function!!
and seems one controversy ends and the other starts!
I mentioned earlier this thread was started with intention to help DFT team to help understand user needs not to fight.

1] They seem to have made serious improvements on the Bing Maps so hopefully it will improve more and more once they integrate it with Nokia Maps or so I have heard.
2] Skype is definitely coming to WP7
Facebook built in Chat in Messaging App is super brilliant and so is local scout.
To be honest I can't decide whether to use my HD7 or SGS2 .. I seem to keep flipin between them all the time.
The only reason I favour the SGS2 is cause of the better camera and googleplus and of course the apps
Other not sure But I for one will definitely getting a Nokia Phone, cause I am sure Nokia Phones will Rock

[Q] WP8 Store and Game

Debating on going from my SGS3 to Nokia Lumia 920 but am worried about the microsoft market place.
Is there much choice available on the WP8 store?
Does anyone know if the game 'life is magic' will be on WP8 store (available on ios and droid but cannot see on WP8?
Can the lumia play most video formats or does WP8 still require all data to be pushed/converted via zune still?
If the lumia cannot play these is there an application available for WP8 that allows WP8 devices to use different formats/codecs?
As you may guess i have not used a WP7 or WP8 device before but am getting over my phobia of how ugly the UI is to me and want to try one.
This is the windows 8 section, not the windows phone 8 section. The 2 are not the same thing.
Crap it! Sorry thought i had put in the right place, i should have read it properly!!!

1) Unfortunately, it's near empty compared to iOS/android.
2) Only authors knows. Currently where are no news about WP8 port.
3) It supports mp4/wmv etc, you can download movie to phone and watch it. Third-party players can be installed for not-so-wildspread formats like .mkv
4) Yes, like "Yxplayer". it's commercial, but price is like 3-4$ .
5) My personal opinion - not a good idea. I have switched from Galaxy Note to Nokia 620 just to test new OS. Android/iOS are better right now.

Excellent, thanks for the honest response. Think i may hold off for either the new nokia with xenon flash or hold off still until ubuntu raises it's head.
I have a Note 2 as my main phone and 620 as a secondary. IMHO, the 620 works extremely well as a secondary phone. The 920 is simply too expensive for such a role. To be honest, the WP8 is simply too raw to be a main OS. Too many missing apps and fundamental OS features.

changing video card on a laptop

alright guys my friend has a toshiba satellite L755 (this might not be the entire model number im going to look into it again) and its spec are alright but the video card and possible the cpu are ****. he wants to play alot of the newest games but isent able to run most of them, but im sure a simple getting a video card and installing it should be easy but i dont know if the video card is attached to the cpu and that would be very expensive . i wouldnt know how to tell if it would be that problem can anyone help us?
No, yes, no ...
Desktop and Laptop thread? You can't have missed it?
I have never heard of changing a video card on laptop. It's like built in feature and look that you won't find anything on the market that fits GPU for laptops. You could of course buy a graphics card and connect it via usb but from what I remember It was very expensive and was only given support to some intel cpu's
Better luck asking here.

OT DESKTOP/LABTOP THREAD.
Did you use a T9 keyboard to type that? No capital letters anywhere.

I've done it several times. It all depends on the laptop and wether or not you can even access the Videocard. Most high-end Asus laptops can easily be customized.
Best go to a computershop if you've no experience with it yourself, it isn't always easy.
