HELP: device in reset loop - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I was trying to root my device, and I thought it was going well. once I rebooted it, the "Kindle fire system recovery" showed up. with two options. to reboot or to reset to factory defaults. booth options cause the device to reboot ans show the same message again.
I desperately need your help.
Thank you

Thank you for the reply,
I hope I could get it to adb but I can only boot it and when its booting the message shows up. I don't know if it has fastboot or if I could access it.
any other suggestions?

Thanks for the comprehensive response,
I tried what you suggested and the only output I get is ERROR: could not get pipe properties
I guess I need to look into factory cables hopefully it will get me to run fastboot mode.
If you have any other suggestions please share them

If your (stock) device only boots into recovery, you cannot change bootmodes without a factory cable, unless it's rooted. If your device IS rooted, changing bootmodes will be slightly different because you have to do so using the shell.
Code:
adb shell su -c idme bootmode 4000
adb reboot
If changing the bootmode doesn't work to bring your device back, you're probably looking at much bigger problems.

Thank you for the reply
the commands you listed are to be entered using a factory cable? am I correct?
because the device is rooted but I could not connect to it via adb nor fastboot.

No. If the device won't connect via adb, it's likely a problem with your computer and/or drivers.
One thing I have to ask is...are you using the Kindle Fire HD or the original Kindle Fire? With the Kindle Fire HD, you should not be trying to use fastboot unless you absolutely know what you're doing. Any alteration to the bootloader or recovery partitions WILL lock your device down, and it's highly unlikely you'll get it running again.

I am using the fire HD 7" ..
and I want to make sure because the only screen I am available to access right now is the "Kindle fire system recovery" menu. and during it being displayed and I'm not sure if the system fully booted to access it with adb

I'm not sure if fastboot will work. You could try running fastboot in cmd. If its the same as the original kindle fire, you should first completely shut it down. Then, with fastboot type
Code:
fastboot getvar store
Then, turn on your kindle fire. If it says something in cmd, then it worked and your in fastboot. As of right now, fastboot wont help anything. But, when the kf hd gets a custom bootloader and a custom recovery, you could enter something like
Code:
fastboot 0x1949 flash bootloader nameofbootloader.img(or some file extension)
fastboot 0x1949 flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Again, 0x1949 was for the original kindle fire. I don't know if it will work for the kf hd.
After you would flash the recovery and bootloader, you could flash a ROM or you could get somebody to make a backup of a kindle fire hd that just had a factory reset, and then you could restore it in recovery.
And if you want to get out of fastboot mode, you could
Code:
fastboot 0x1949 bootmode 4000
fastboot 0x1949 reboot

You're going to have to provide more detail than that. Where are you getting this information?
OP, if the KFHD is anything like the KFOG (I'm betting it is), you should be able to send adb commands while in recovery (stock or otherwise). What errors are you getting, if any, when trying to send adb commands?

At the prompt shown in the screenshot, there is no connectivity between the device and pc. I checked the device manager and also tried it on the mac "adb devices" shows nothing ... that why I thought fastboot is the only way out. if there is anything you want me to try I'll be glad to.

??
Got an answer about the problem now?

No. still waiting for some senior member revelation, or buying the factory cable

I ordered a factory cable ... I will need assistance with flashing the stock ROM back with fastboot

I have same bootloop issue.
I have entered Kindle Fire HD 7" fastboot mode
but it entered shorting some cables, not completed makes factory cable.
my KFHD is fastboot mode but my computer has not detect any devices.
It's normal micro 5pin data cable now.
anyone have idea to convert this to facory cable?
front of cable has REV.3 and RED, BLK words
back of cable has GRN, WHT words
i have no electric tester

you are one step ahead of me .. so I can't help you ... hope a more experienced member could lend a hand with this.

Did you read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392693 ?

Found these instructions on ebay, don't know if they are useful.
Boot up your computer to Windows
Turn off the Kindle Fire
Plug cable into Kindle Fire
Plug into USB Port of the computer
The Kindle Fire unit if not on already will have turned on again.
Press and Hold the Power button for 20 seconds (past the do you want to turn off prompt). The device will go dark.
Press the power button once and let go.
The device will turn on and it will stop at the Kindle Fire Triangle ( This is in the Fastboot Mode)
If you check your devices, it should say under Android Phone
Android ADB Interface

OMG Stop.
Stop, stop, stop ,stop, stop, before you lock your device down for good.
You need to do some research before trying random things, not knowing what they are for.
The factory cable PUTS THE DEVICE IN FASTBOOT. It does not take it out of fastboot. Research fastboot commands to determine the best course of action for you. Just be sure you know what you are doing and the potential consequences of doing so.

@parintan
any luck with your kindle?

Any updates on the KFHD front?

[Q] Unbrick Kindle Fire HD 8.9 without a factory cable?

I made some changes to the build.prop and rebooted, and now it gets stuck at the Kindle Fire boot animation. I can't get it to boot into safe mode either. Is there a way to unbrick or restore it without a factory cable? I can't get it to show up with adb.
If there's no way, I could probably make a factory cable, but it would be nice to fix it without having to do that.

Yes there is a way to get the 8.9 into fastboot so you can restore it without a factory cable, as a factory cable does not work on this device.
Power down the device and unplug
Open a cmd prompt where you have access to the fastboot script from SDK
Enter this command (or any fastboot cmd as long as you include [-i 0x1949]:
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product
It will say "waiting for device"
Plug in the device and it will automatically boot into fastboot.
I have confirmed this works works when the device is in a loop and adb is not recognized. This does not work on the other models, a factory cable is required. Once in fastboot you can flash a backup image. I will be posting an update to the KFHD SRTool in the development section this morning to include 8.9" version

Tried that... The command you said just shows the help list, if I do a different fastboot command it says waiting for device and then the Kindle boots normally and gets stuck at boot animation like usual.

Are you sure you typed that command correctly because the help menu comes up if a command is entered wrong, I just did it and it worked fine. When you enter a fastboot command for this device it has to have the- [-i 0x1949] after fastboot, that is a zero not an O. If that is not done it will boot normally
ie:
fastboot -i 0x1949 [command]
I've posted the update for the 8.9 restore tool in development section
It could be because I have an older version of fastboot. Any chance you could upload the newest version for me?

If you need to restore the system image though, you should just download the KFHD_SRTool from development section for 8.9 and follow the instructions. It has fastboot included in the tool.
I've done the same thing with my kindle fire hd 7 (7.2.2 rooted, no TWRP), now its just stuck on the boot animation.
adb does not recognize the device. I tried using fastboot, (with the normal usb cable), it gets stuck with the '<waiting for device>' message.
The device manager does show the Kindle, but earlier it used to show 2 devices, a kindle and an adb composite
Were you ultimately able to solve this issue?

Turns out, it was a driver issue. Installed the proper Amazon driver, then it was detected by the adb. From there on, I was able to replace the bad build.prop with my backup

My Kindle Fire 8.9" SW v.8.1.4 is completely dark and unresponsive as the result of an unsuccessful attempt to root using KF utility 0.9.6. I suspect results would have been different if I'd had the sense to locate your tool and use it instead. Having downloaded KFHD for v8.1.4, I have tried to get the tool talking with the brick, and see only < waiting for device > eternally. I have charged overnight, held the power button down for >20 sec. to make sure the device was off, then bumped the power button. This should assure that the device is on, but in Amazon's wisdom there are no LEDs to confirm this. Do you have any suggestions for getting the device in a communicative state? I am perfectly willing to open the case. Please forgive the post if this is not the right thread for it, and point me to the right spot if you can.

I have exactly the same problem. This KFU-version seems to be a real KF 8.9"-killer.
My device does not respond to anything, regardless what I tried. Connecting to a PC does not trigger any response. The device is not recognized by the PC in any way. I believe that there is no USB-communication at all. I tried a factory-mode cable and this didn't work, too.
Any help would be appreciated, really!
Thanks and regards

Add another brick to the pile. Fire HD 8.9. Already rooted, OTA defeated, and Google App'd, but wanted the security of FFF just in case. Planned to used KFU 0.9.6 to set fastboot and then push FFF 1.4a once in fastboot. Instead, used KFU 0.9.6 to automatically install FFF. It appeared that KFU pushed FFF and then sent a reboot. The machine never came back to life after that shutdown.
Attempting to get into fastboot results in eternally <waiting for device>
I removed the back - there are no obvious 'fastboot' pads on any of the boards as there is for the HD 7".
Does anyone think that a factory cable would get this thing's attention? edit...apparently not. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20380015&postcount=9

Another one bites the dust...but hopefully not
Hi guys,
I tried the KFFirstAide tool to root my Fire 8.9, but after it ran, it just wipes red and then goes to the fastboot screen after powering up. I've used the KFHD SRT tool to replaced the system.img file, but still the same thing happens. Is it possibly because I need to restore the boot.img and recovery.img (which KFFirstAide overwrites) as well? And if so, does someone have a clean copy of those that will work with 8.1.4? Thanks!

I hope you didn't swap motherboards... Like user onemeila stated, you do not need a fastboot cable on the Kindle Fire HD 8.9. Just make sure that before you enter the command "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" that your Kindle is off and plug into the factory cable. Enter the command and wait for the message <wating for device>. Then turn on your kindle and you should boot into fastboot mode. If you see the fastboot screen on your kindle and Jem-PVT-Prod-04 in the command terminal, there is hope. The only problem I encountered is after each command, sometime it won't respond. So you might have to do one command, let it finish it's process. If the next one doesn't work, turn off the kindle enter "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" command. Turn on the kindle and proceed with the next command to restore your kindle.
The way the device is setup, it's very hard to completely ruin the device.

You are pretty much screwed. Sorry to tell you. You've flashed over the bootloader, the problem is with one that doesn't work. So your device won't even boot into fastboot no matter what you do. There was a way to do it on the original KF by removing the back and grounding the usb boot pad, then you could usbboot cmds to install the bootloader. But I'm not sure if it will work or ever been tested on this device. Good Luck, look on the bright side you can turn it into an extremely thin planter box, that still serves no purpose

Kindle Fire HD7 red screen

So I was trying to install TWRP to my Kindle Fire HD7. I had successfully rooted and was using FireFlash to flash the bootloader.
When I pressed boot to recovery the device rebooted showed the kindle logo and then a red screen.
I tried making a fastboot cable but could not get the device to show up in ADB devices. Am I totally boned?
I have links to the directions I followed and a gif of the logo and red screen but I cannot post them since I'm new.
I had this issue also, I just made a fastboot cable, plugged it in and flashed stock files, I then rerooted, installed TWRP, 2ND bootloader, then CM11, finally with PAC-rom.
Sent from my Kindle Fire HD 7 running PAC-man
I can can agree with wire55. Have to have a fastboot cable to fix this. Reflashed stock then created my own personal port ROM.
Sent from my Kindle Fire HD running a Personal Ported Rom
I made a fastboot (by jumping pin 1 and 4 on a microusb) cable but it shows the device as disconnected in Device Manager.
Here is what it looks like when I turn it on i.imgur.com/TSUHsjW.gif
you dont use adb commands with fastboot mode, you use fastboot commands with fastboot mode. Try "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" and see if it reports back. If it does all you will need to do is flash the older bootloader for your device first(check the md5sum plz so you don't hard brick), then restore with kffa or srt. Fireflash method should work fine now for sure once you have flashed the older bootloader.
concerning rdwidam
It says <waiting for device>
I will try again tomorrow, my friend is bringing over a fastboot cable that we know is working.
I'll report back if there is progress. Thanks.

ok that's good, if the command still doesn't respond after it says fastboot mode on the screen, then go to the device manager and look for a device with a yellow triangle next to it, once you find it download my drivers in my signature, extract them somewhere, and right click the device and hit update drivers, point it to where you extracted mine and let it install. If you are on windows 8 you will have to disable driver signature enforcement first.
OK, I got a fastboot cable but still no luck. Nothing shows up in device manager and no response to fastboot commands. I think I'm going to throw my self on the mercy of Amazon.

So the fastboot cable isn't throwing it into fastboot mode, it is staying at a red screen? You are positive the fastboot cable is a fastboot cable? And i have to ask this even though its stupid but you are positive it was a kindle fire hd 7 and not an 8.9"? The fastboot cables don't work on 8.9" models is why i'm asking, those will go into fastboot with the command i mentioned but its slightly more complicated than that, the device would show up for a brief moment then disappear when turned on.
It is possible our fastboot cable is not working. I will try another one today. I measured the kindle and the view-able screen is 7 inches diagonally, while the whole body including the bezel is 9 inches.

Ok, success! I got out my soldering iron and made a working fastboot cable. Now my kindle turns on and shows a fastboot logo on screen, and I have a device called Tate-PVT-08 in Device Manager. So I installed the android drivers to allow me to use fastboot commands. Then I used KFHD_SRT tools to restore the Recovery and Factory image.
Thank you everyone for all your help and knowledge. I was freaking out a bit, but all is well.

Given up on my bricked Kindle 2012... help me!!

I purchased a used 2012 Kindle Fire HD 7" from Cowboom, and I decided to look into rooting/installing CFW on the device. I looked at a few automated utilities that would basically do the installation for me, and found that none of them were working.
This was all on Amazon's latest update, I think 7.4.8? All the guides I read were for earlier versions etc, but I went and tried them all anyway. After using KFU(I think), my device was red screen bricked after attempting to install TWRP. Now, I have a device that only shows a red screen when trying to turn on.
I've read almost every guide on how to unbrick the device, using fastboot(and yes, I did purchase a factory cable that can successfully get me into fastboot), but whenever I try to use any fastboot commands, or utilities, I get a <waiting for device> error every time. It seems to be the main issue I'm running into.
I installed various Kindle drivers to see if it was the problem(I'm on Win8 64-bit), and have run into the same error no matter what I do. I've also tried restoring the device on my laptop(same OS). No luck
I've tried using KF First Aide, Kindle Fire Utility, KF SRT, basically everything, but I always run into <waiting for device> no matter what I try doing. Using a fastboot cable extension to get into fastboot, then unplugging, replugging, changing cables, everything
Prior to being bricked, the drivers were fine and the device showed up as Kindle in the device manager, but now since it has been bricked, it shows up as Tate-PVT-08.
If ANYONE could please, please help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated... I'm honestly about to give up after trying to fix it for hours on end, and its giving me a headache everytime I try again...I really don't know what to do at this point. I feel like my device is permanently bricked :crying:

KFU is the wrong bootloader and not made for KFHD. Use Kindle Fire SRT v30 and choose the third option. The waiting for device is because you don't have the paths set right in your environment. Have you downloaded the SDK package? If so you can Copy/paste the path you set for the platform tools/tools and I can see if everything looks OK.

I have downloaded the android SDK, and java runtime environment.
Added the environment variable too, supposed to look like this right?

Nothing works, I've followed the instructions for KF SRT very carefully
Wow, I found out what the problem was thanks to f4hkramer. I didn't install the drivers manually so instead of it showing up as Tate-PVT-008, it shows up as Kindle Fire. Successfully restored device..... so happy

I think I've figured it out. The key was when entering the update driver window and click browse my computer, instead of looking for a file location clicking pick from list of drivers on my computer. It installed the kindle driver and is now listed as kindle fire - android adb device.

Provisioning Fail

Hey guys. I successfully rooted and installed twrp last night. This morning, I tried to install a custom rom but after installing and then rebooting I received an error message on the screen stating "Provisioning Fail". I tried a couple of other roms and have even tried the original stock Amazon rom but none of them will work. I followed a thread that I saw here and attempted a system recovery using fastboot and original img files,
This resulted in the loss of twrp on my kindle and now every time I boot, I get the normal kindle fire logo and then straight the the "Provisional Fail" screen. Please help. Cheers.
Any ideas???

That usually comes up with a firmware update failure. Even people with stock units got that message before but it's been a while. You need to restore it via system restore tool again and use option 3.

I have tried to restore it with a couple of tools that I found on the forum but I get an error message saying device not found. When I connect the Kindle, it doesn't even show up in the device manager on my laptop.

You need a fastboot cable to restore it.

I was hoping that wouldn't be the case! Is it possible to make a cable myself without needing a soldering iron?
Eh yea but Its not fun and you still will need a cable that has a contact point for the pin that's normally soldered. Not all USB cables have them(and I believe the cable that came with the kindle didn't have the contact point either) You could use a paperclip and try to hold it in place but I don't recommend this, you might accidentally slip the paperclip and short something. The black hat adapters are nice. I recommend them, they go between a normal cable and the kindle.

I am going to order one of those adapters and hopefully it will do the trick. Thanks for your help.
Simlar situtation
Were you able to get past this?
I had successfully loaded the 2nd bootloader and put CM 10 on my Kindle. When I tried to go to CM11, something got borked. All I could get was a boot loop with the normal kindle boot screen - I no longer saw the blue graphic.
I get provisioning fail only when I use the recovery tool - any version. Honestly I have tried so many things I don't know how to get back to stock.

Do you have a fastboot cord? Use the most recent SRT and choose option 3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951254

I do have the fastboot adapter and option 3 still brings up the provisioning fail error. I have tried all permutations of the SRT and KFFA. I get nothing but provisioning fail unless I go back to the 2nd bootloader boot/recovery/system files. Then I get the orange kindle fire boot loop.
Thanks, MLK
I had this problem, I had gotten it due to trying to put different kernel on stock system. My way of getting out of this loop was using KFFA and doing the option that installs all partitions off a working kindle. It installs a total of 7 partitions,if I'm correct, and viola your fixed! That was the thing though.....I used another extra kindle I had in hand, I extracted the partition files from it and injected them to faulty kindle.

Hi! I'm having the same problem with "Provisioning Fail" I bought a fastboot cable and used KFHD System restore tool. My Kindle Fire HD (2012) is unrooted and kept freezing until one day i opened it again and saw the Provisioning Fail on the screen. So chose option 3, going back to stock but when I opened the device, the Kindle Fire logo back but after a few seconds went back to Provisioning fail.
Can you tell me you used the KFFA? And what partitions did you mention about? Sorry I'm a total noob about all these stuff. Hope you can help me.

I'm trying to root my Kindle Fire HD (3rd Gen), but I need to enter fastboot mode.

The only way to enter fastboot mode without a fastboot cable, is to already have a rooted device. Since I don't have a fastboot cable, and my device is unrooted, this seems kind of like a Catch-22. I's there any other way to enter fastboot mode without a cable, and on an unrooted device? Please help.
Additionally info:
+ADB can communicate with and detect my device, fastboot doesn't detect it at all.
+When my device boots, It originally starts with a grey Kindle fire logo, then a red-orange Kindle logo.
+My OS is the most recent : 4.5.5.3
+I have turned on ADB debugging
+I am able to put my device into "Fire System Recovery" Mode, where I can either "Reboot your Fire" or "Reset to Factory Defaults"
+My goals with this device is to install TWRP onto my system(Without sketchy software like OneClickRoot, or KingoRoot, which my research tells me are untrustworthy.
+I am a noob, and rather non-technical. Sorry. Please tell me if I am doing something wrong, chances are I am.
