How to install browser.apk - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't care much for Silk browser. I would like to install the the android browser. I have tried adb install | pushing it to /system/app and /data/app and setting the permissions. I have tried odexed and non/odexed browser.apk's. Hopefully I'm forgetting something simple. If anyone knows how I could accomplish this I would be very grateful.

Did you changed permissions for apk in system/app folder?
PS Sorry, I didn't read to the end.
Sent from my KFHD rooted

Yes, I set the permissions to rw-r--r-- on browser.apk in the /system/app folder.

same problem.waiting for answers.

If you're looking for another browser, google chrome works on the KFHD.
Unless you are rooted and install sync settings, chrome will run but it won't sync to your other devices that have chrome.

Thanks for the idea but I like the quick controls on the android browser. I haven't got anywhere with this. I was going to try pushing gtalk, I think I read that will give you sync settings. Maybe with sync it will run since it is bound to your Google account.

Installed Browser.apk
I was able to get the ICS browser.apk installed. I found a browser.apk from somewhere on XDA. Honestly I don't know the rule about attachments so I didn't attach it. I downloaded browser.apk. I moved it to /data/app. I installed it using root explorer. Once installed I used root explorer and moved the apk to /system/app. I also deleted the [email protected] .dex file from /data/dalvik-cache. I set the permissions to rw-r--r-- , I also changed the owner to 0 - root. Rebooted and yeah!! ICS browser. Works pretty nice. Quick controls/ extended quick controls. I'm sure it's the apk I downloaded but it looks like some additional features I haven't seen before. The only problem I've seen it the way the text refreshes on zoom in or out. I did an about:debug to see if normal rendering would help, not really but if you move the page a little it refocuses. Sorry if this is hard to follow, I can try to explain better if need be. I just got excited that it worked. By the way, this method also worked for Google Video.

[REQUEST] CM 6 with Stock Music, Browser, and Launcher apps

CM6 is truly awesome, but guys like me miss stock apps like the Music, Browser, and Launcher apps. The replacement apps are great, but they don't feel solid enough ATM for some. You may argue that this isn't logical, but as a UX designer, I have reasons that you may or may not appreciate.
I can also use other ROMs, but other mod apps on CM6 like the DeskClock and WyContacts are cool for me. I also don't want to miss all other "invisible" stuff on CM6 like the Bluetooth HID support, FLAC support, trackball wake, etc.
I tried doing this myself by pushing the stock apks, renaming them to use the names of the mod apps, removing the mod apps, etc; but nothing worked.
Can someone bake CM 6 RC2 with all its goodness plus the stock Music, Launcher, and Browser apps? A ROM with both stock and mod versions of those apps would be cool, but if it's not possible, just the stock apps would do.
I can understand (and somewhat agree with you) about the stock launcher and browser... but why in God's name would you want that atrocity that they call a music app?
But, i'll give you +1 for stock launcher.
Out of curiosity; why not just get the apk and push/install it via adb (then set it as default on the device)? If it's just those three, seems simple enough. Am I missing something.

Yep.
I did that. Didn't work. Looks like those apps are tied to CM6's framework or something

I don't know about the browser and music apps (I MUCH prefer the stock ones), but I'm using the stock launcher2.apk on CM6.0 RC2 without issues.
Just do adb remount and adb push launcher2.apk /system/app/
If you want to remove ADW completely you can do adb remount and adb shell su rm /system/app/ADWLauncher.apk

I have tried to push the stock Music app to replace CM6's one and have no problems. Perhaps you can give it one more try?
Ok here it is just flash it in recovery. http://www.4shared.com/file/gVONv3gW/stock-signed.html
Stock launcher and music app are awful. LauncherPro and ADW are much better and faster than stock launcher.

That's really odd. I successfully pushed it with adb. I even checked with Astro and the apks really went to /system/app/. After pushing the three apks, they just uninstalled the apps (the mod apps were just uninstalled, and the stock apps still weren't installed).

Done! It worked! My Android experience feels complete again.
Can anyone explain why pushing the apks doesn't work, while d750's zip works?
Weird, i use nightlies and I rather some stock apps too. The new Music App comes with a "Video" app too which i hate so i remove it as well as:
/system/app
ADWLauncher.apk
Development.apk
Facebook.apk
Music.apk
RomManager.apk
SpareParts.apk
Term.apk
Twitter.apk
googlevoice.apk
com.amazon.mp3.apk
SuperUser.apk
/system/media.
bootanimation.zip

That there is basically what i remove whenever i format and i install the updated versions of:
Facebook.apk
googlevoice.apk
Music.apk (stock 2.2)
Launcher2.apk
I'm still trying to figure out how to get com.amazon.mp3.apk to install without showing up in Downloads. I found a thread to mark it as a "System app" but it still shows up in Downloads after a while. Dunno what i'm doing wrong but i rather the newer version as well.
@shotta35
How do you go about installing Facebook.apk, googlevoice.apk, Music.apk (stock 2.2),, Launcher2.apk?
You just have to push those to /system/app or /data/app respectivly and they will "install". Or two of those you could grab from the market.
As others have said just use adb shell and remove those. The exit from that and do a adb push Facebook.apk /system/app and it will be installed there.

[Q] Default Calendar

Is there any way to re-load the default Samsung Captivate calendar app without starting from scratch? I deleted it thinking that I wouldn't really need it (stupid)and now I realize most calendar apps look for it. If not, is there an independent calendar app that could replace it?
Thanks a lot.
-Tony
Are you on stock or a custom rom? If it's the latter I would just download the zip again, extract the calender apk and place it in the correct folder (using root explorer or whatever) and apply permissions again, and reboot.
Sent from my Captivate
Every time I try to install the apk it tells me that it could not be installed. I tried downloading it from a few different sources and I get the same result every time. I put it into the system folder and try to instal it from there. I've gotten rid of all the other calendar files. No clue why I can't install the new one. I'm rooted and have permissions to side-load apps. any advice?

Because you don't need to install it. Put the apk in the system folder, make sure it has the correct file permissions and then reboot. Done!
Okay. Well, it's now in the System folder as far as I can tell. I rebooted andthe Calendar is still not installed. What I'm not sure about is the permissions. What are the "correct permissions"? as in, what should they be set to and how would I chane them if I needed to?
Anyone? This has been driving me crazy for like two weeks now.
Still no dice...
Okay, I'm taking a crack at bumping this again. Honestly, I have no idea why this isn't working. I see the apk and odex files listed under my /system folder.
When I check Titanium Backup I see the following files:
com.android.calendar
com.android.providers.calendar
They're both crossed out.
Why won't they install? What am I doing wrong?

I think these apps should be under "/system/app" and not "/system" folder.
Yeah, I also have them under /system/app but still no luck. This is really driving me nuts. They're there. For all intents and purposes the phone SHOULD recognize them and install them... but it doesn't. Weird. I honestly don't know what I should do except forget it.

[Q] Couple Sprint questions....I know its mainly Cricket here

As mentioned in the title, I know there are mainly Cricket users here, I have been reading for a while, but just joined. I am a dev, but am just now getting into Android development, and have just a couple questions. Before I start, I would like to point out that I do have the Sprint images that are available, and will explain my situation. Because Sprint shut down the 2.2 updates, I am currently on 2.1.
I am on my second Zio at the moment, as I loaded the wrong images onto it. (I have both Cricket and Sprint images, and wasnt paying attention). I rooted and started clearing out bloatware, but, I uninstalled a few things that I shouldnt have...I put them back, of course.
Well, I put them back in the /system/app folder, put it back to r/o permission, restarted my phone, and poof...all those apps were missing from both my SD card and the /system/app folder. So now, I cant open my market, load my Google account for syncing, add contacts, etc. In essence, if it doesnt pertain to Google directly, it works. Factory reset does not reload everything.
I wanted to reload the system.img, but I cannot find a decent ROM backup app that I dont have to use the market for- any suggestions?
Second, is there a way I can reload these specific apps, as to get things working how they should? A .zip file, or anything packaging these apps?
I am sorry if these are answered elsewhere, I just have not come across them. Also, sorry for this being so long.
OK, I'm gonna guess you have root explorer or similar and root access... You probably need to change the permissions of the system apps back to 0644 or rw r r then reboot. I personally mess with system apps and their permissions alot. If your phone gives you too much trouble but still boots the system and you have the Android SDK you can do adb shell then chmod 0644 /system/appnamehere.apk then reboot.
Sent from my Zio using XDA App
Yes, I do have Root Explorer. I havent messed a lot with the SDK, but, based on what youre saying, it contains the apps I need to replace? For a bit more insight, the apps that are missing are Google Talk, Google Apps, and Gmail. I tried keeping my system apps as r/w, but that did not help. I also got the .apks of the aforementioned apps, but the installs do not work. I got Google Talk to at least crash, instead of immediately closing, which is what Gmail and the Market do. From what I have been able to do, as I havent been near my system with the SDK on it, changing the permissions does not make a difference. I will keep playing with it and get back with the results.

[Q] Contacts process force close after removing some bloatware

Would really appreciate some help.
Removed some bloatware via Titanium Backup, and of course, I got trigger happy.
process com.motorola.contacts (Contacts force closes)
process com.motorola.conversations (text messaging force closes)
So I have Root Explorer and got a hold of a system dump for Bionic.
I started by moving YahooContacts.apk (one of the apps I guess I shouldn't have uninstalled) back to the /system/app folder...but it doesn't show up anywhere as an installed app (just that the .apk was moved). If I try to actually select the .apk and try to install it says "Application did not Install" but the .apk IS moved.
Processes still don't work after moving.
I would appreciate any help, at this point I can't text or place calls. Thanks in advance, this forum helped me with the entire root process.
You cannot freeze/remove ANY of the other authenticator apps, it will cause contacts to freeze. I ran into that on the Droid 3.
First off there is no need to delete/remove, Freezing them accomplishes the same thing but most importantly it allows you to reverse what you have broken by Defrosting it. Do yourself a favor stop deleting and start freezing. If 16GB is not enough internal storage for you then you might consider an external HD from Seagate!!!!!!! LOL
I realize I made a big mistake. That's totally on me But it's in the past
Do I have any options to get this working again? I am definitely going to freeze apps in the future.
If I did delete an authenticator process, is there any way I can get those back? Would they be available through a system dump?
I believe that you need to make sure the permissions are correct after reinstalling an apk to the system/app folder. I've never done this, so I'll let you do the research. I've heard you can use root explorer to do this or a script with terminal emulator. Sorry I can't help more
I have the exact same problem, and am attempting to troubleshoot this issue on a different forum, however I am not allowed to post links but I'll try and keep you updated.
Edit: It's not a problem with permissions, I've made sure that they're correct with root explorer. It seems to be a Bionic-specific issue. I might just return it at this rate.
Thankfully, there's an unroot to use. I think im in the same boat. re-added all the yahoo related .apk and .odex and set permissions/owner, still nothing. Unroot and hope the Verizon dude is in a good mood!
Except now ADB is throwing "ERROR: ADB could not be granted root access" when trying to unroot
excellent.
Someone in the thread I was talking about had some success, its on droidforums dot net, droid bionic forum, bionic support, HELP! accidentally deleted IMSCServer from Droid Bionic thread. Maybe you can try something I haven't.
just do a factory reset thats what i had to do as I had the same problem.
I tried that, it didn't work... Did you actually get your system apps back? Did you do it through settings or the recovery menu?
i froze my bloat thats prob the difference and it was yahoo that caused the problem for me...

It really begs the question why anything with Yahoo is required by the system. Furthermore, why did they make it so frustratingly hard to reinstall system apps on the Bionic? Really disappointed in Motorola for this.
Here is the fix for Contacts, restore these files and set correct permission, reboot and presto Contacts fixed
That did it.. I have been looking for the YAHOO Contacts.apk file for 3 days with a bloody wortheless phone that I spent 300 shells on!
BTW I agree with Glimmerman, WHY DID YAHOO get involved in contacts? Talk about a sneaky way in integrate them.

Sorry if I'm newbtastic here but what do I do with these APKs and odex. I tried installing with ES explorer but it would not install. Am I supposed to move these files somewheres? /system/app then try install ? Thanks
answered my own question. I WAS newbtastic afterall. LOL. Thanks anyways. This did it. Dang Yahoo!
lol yep my girlfriend did this yesterday fortunately i have a bionic too so i just pulled the files from my phone and pushed to hers.
damn you yahoo.
also, apparently go contacts EX will 'fix' the problem (you must use their app however)

Wait - WHERE are we putting the Contact fix and do we extract it once we've moved it?

Google Talk on 2.1.1.Clean.0.0

Hi, I'm using the 2.1.1.Clean.0.0 ROM (a mod of the stock one), that comes without many apps preinstalled with the stock. I would know which files I have to restore from the stock ROM to have Google Talk working, because it's not in this ROM by default. I tried to restore gtalkservice.apk, Talk.apk and TalkProvider.apk in /system/app folder fixing permissions, but so I get an error and Talk doesn't show in the apps. Thanks in advance.
you can try this url m.google.com from your phone browser
or
try this apk
fm browserr
I did something wrong when I fixed permissions to files. Now, with permissions 644 it works .
