Swype issues - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed two bugs with Swype on the Kindle Fire HD. Anyone else noticed these and have a workaround?
1. When using the Amazon apps, like the book store, Swype does not correctly fill text boxes, like the search field. The default keyboard and other keyboards where you select one key at a time work fine. But with Swype or Slide It you have to do double duty, selecting the letter, then confirming the letter in the autocomplete field for each and every letter. If you Swype out a whole word you have to confirm it in the autocomplete field, but then it only inserts the first letter into the text box. This problem seems exclusive to the Amazon apps.
2. In landscape mode the menu bar cuts off some of the keyboard on the right side. This appears to be a problem with all third-party keyboards.

2. Yeah, noticed that. KFHD is made to use its own keyboard. That is why Amazon made it a PITA to install and use others. I noticed landscape problems with SlideIT also but at least they let you adjust the size of the keyboard. One of the reasons why I sent mine back.

You can only do it on a rooted device and I didn't find SlideIT to be very stable. It was OK at first then it would randomly quit on me. The thread is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1898390
Its done on your own risk, it can cause annoying force close issues and installing it again normally fixes it but the KFHD likes to be finicky.

aklemist and others who have successfully installed alternative keyboards-- have you guys upgraded to the latest firmware? I just upgraded to 7.2.3 and in the process, I have screwed up my swype license. I guess now that the stock keyboard is swype-based, there was some conflict with the files or something. Now whenever I try to type anything on my kindle, I get a pop up message saying "Application not licensed. This version of Swype has an invalid license and will operate with limited functionality. Beta users, please run the installer again. All others, contact Swype."
Anyone have a workaround? I don't yet have root reinstalled, and my options are limited since I have no way to type *anything* right now.

Installing Swype Beta on Nexus One

How do I install Swype beta on the Nexus One? I found http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/12/30/how-to-get-swype-on-android/ but it's only for Droid. Doesn't work on the N1 because the screen resolution is wrong.
It still works,I use the Droid version on my N1 without an issue - it'll give the error message about the screen size but if you press the text field again it'll pop up and work fine.
it actually DOES work, just not in landscape. Just close the error message and go to input portrait mode again and it'll work. I just turned off auto orientation to always keep my phone in portrait mode to avoid any crashes while laying down and it switching to landscape. There is an .apk file out there that says they have patched it but to no avail =P
Swype is my keyboard while driving (1 handed operation) but I use Smart Keyboard (free on market) for regular landscape typing.
What am I doing wrong then? I installed it, then the same error comes up about the screen size. I click start and when I go to type, no keyboard comes up.
On second thought, I may have had a bad apk file. I downloaded the one in the first post and got it to work.
Looks like it works sometimes. The error message is bugging me, though. There's also no way to hide the keyboard sometimes, unlike the stick keyboard (which you can drag down to hide).
When using Swype and latest Cyanogen rom I cannot use camera. If I disable Swype, then the camera works fine.

Just press the back button to hide it.
Just wondering if anyone here has the ability to get rid of the warning message and landscape version?
It must be a relatively easy task for an experienced dev?
This guy managed to fix it for Hero, Magic etc. and no nag screen and landscape works. Look like he will attempt to fix N1 version as well. Info here:

Wont download for me !!! Just keeps resetting the page.
Anyone able to disable the error message? I am using the english n russian only version.
I'd prefer Swype, but other options exist...
I'd rooted my Kindle Fire and put Swype on there, and use it on my Evo (work phone) and on Incredible. So I'd prefer to have the same tool on all devices.
Two similar products that reportedly DO work with Nexus:
TouchPal Keyboard (free)
SlideIT ($5.99)
Both are in the Android Marketplace
Somewhere I think I've got the apk for ShapeWriter as well, and I used to like that one, so could be worth a test.
I'm not sure what the problem is here? I've been using Swype on my N1 for as long as I can remember, and have never had any problems?
Yeah...why not just download the beta from the official Swype website?

I second that. It's so much simpler. Detects your phone & offers the best suited version to download. All you need to do is register & create a username & password for yourself.

swype or ultra keyboard?

i tried installing both of these apps and neither work.
is there anything out there to make em work? or is there another swype style keyboard?
i am TERRIBLE at typing. its just not at receptive of a touch screen as the ipad. but i like the android way way more.
its like i have to press harder to get a key pressed.
thanks in advance
EDIT : also love the feature to type from ultra keyboard with your voice. obviously voice search works on the tab, but im loooking to do emails and such with voice too.. possible?
thanks
Have you run the touch calibration?
i have not... ill search around for it in the menu and clockworkmod
i did the screen calibration. didnt really do anything. its just possible the screen just isnt quite as responsive if i would like.
swype or ultrakeyboard is much more important to me
thanks
It's Swype for me...
I'm a big fan of Swype. I use it on my Droid phone and cannot live without it. I also have it on my gtablet, and continue to love it, although swyping on the large screen in landscape mode takes a little getting used to. Swyping in portrait mode is much better. However, I still like it over others.
Installing Swype is not a simple thing, since the normal install apps check in with Swype headquarters, where you'll be told you are not a phone, so goodbye. And many of the apks for the app will say your screen is not the right size. But search this site, and you will find many threads on the subject, including the link to the proper apk. Basically, you will have to google for a specific version of swype, and then track it down yourself.
It is not impossible. But worth the search.
I know you didn't ask about it, but IMO thumb keyboard is the best for our g tabs

I tried this, and while I like the large keys, I don't like the fact that it takes 100% of the screen up, absolutely useless for IMS or emails or almost anything else. I want something similar to the gingerbread keyboard but with taller, more square like buttons. I've tried using the TapaTalk or whatever it is on my VeganGinger install but it doesn't work at all.

Before I switched to thumb i was using SwiftKey, which was free on amazon Store not too long ago. It reminds me of the g bread kb. I wanted exactly what you wanted, a bigger g bread kb, but now I'm happy with thumb. Good luck.

The one-touch calibration app in this subforum did not work for me, but the calibrate.ini trick (where you put a blank file named calibration.ini in the root of your microSD card and reboot) did work for me. I was stabbing at icons left and right before (especially the home soft button, ARGH!), wanting to toss the Tab out the window, but now it's as sensitive as my Evo's screen.
Swype is easy to install if you find the right file. It doesn't really work all that well on a 10" in landscape mode though. You have to move your hand around too much to make it effective.
I have been using Thumb Keyboard from the Market. I can type with only my thumbs while holding the tablet in my hands. In landscape mode it puts each side of the keyboard close to the sides so the keys are easily reachable. In portrait mode I have it set to just give me the normal full keyboard. It works great and I highly recommend checking it out. It costs a buck or 2.
My only problem with Swype, at least the version I have, is that you cannot turn off the dictionary lookup auto correct. So if the word isn't in the dictionary (websites, usernames, etc...) swype will try to autocorrect to what it thinks it should be, or pop up the guesser window with nothing even close.
Also swype uses up the whole screen for many imput windows which isn't really needed on a tablet, but whatever.
I use SlideIT 3.2, works perfectly.
i just downloaded thumb keyboard. when i go in to language and keyboard, it wont let me populate the check box, enabling it.
it gives me the lil warning, then just wont check.
any help please?

Both versions in the Marketplace say for Android 3.0...just guessing.
tried swype but using slideit
I tried swype. i got it installed, then moved to /system/app but it wouldn't work other than as a normal keyboard. tried slide-it and it works great.

[UPDATED]Thumb Keyboard 4 out of beta!!!!

Full version is out on the market!
What are you doing go DL it already!
Left for history
============================================
Looks like its now working!
I'm using it on Vegan Ginger RC1.
Go grab the apk from the link below.
So far it looks really good,
Typing in landscape is easier, since the keys are much bigger than the stock one this rom comes with.
having arrows on screen is a big plus
And it has lots of symbols you can use by long pressing.
Speaking of long pressing you can change the time it takes to long press in the settings.
Will try post some pics later
Here is the site if you guys want to check it out for yourself.
http://thumb4beta.blogspot.com/
Known issues:
Long pressing on the settings key causes a FC.
Curious if thats the case with other roms
How did you get your keyboard to work with your tablet? I've tried several keyboards besides the one that came with my tablet and ROM (TnT Lite 4.2.5) and it won't even let me select the box to make it a choice.
Try unchecking any other input devices/kb from the settings. I had similar issues when i had other kb enabled

You have to move the Thumb Keyboard apk file from "data/app" to "system/app" via Root Explorer.
Then you reboot and go into your Market and longpress the search text box. You'll be prompted to choose your input method.
Im also testing the keyboard for the developer. So far so good. Always loved the paid version i bought.
I like the new layout though g tabbers will never get to enjoy the multi touch that it now supports (i think our hardware supports only 2 touch points).
Edit: Yes, long press on settings causes a force close on TNT Lite over here too. Reported to developer. I think its actually because he disabled the functionalities for other layouts.

I downloaded, installed, enabled in settings, and selected as the input method. So far it's working just fine. Haven't tested that extensively yet but for now it's pretty awesome.
What's the verdict on this so far? An improvement on the previous version?
Is voice recognition working?
Been using the paid version and it's great. However the voice to text doesn't work. Is that fixed in this version?
It doesn't? Think you need to activate it in settings. Works on my g tab.

Thanks for the help with getting the keyboards working. This is a nice keyboard.
Voice is working fine on my tablet.
I like this keyboard a bunch, hands down the best I've used on the tablet so far. I'll definitely be buying it when it comes out of Beta.
agree. Very very happy with it.
does this not do spelling or auto correct ?

I have not checked the voice part yet, but spelling and auto correct works fine.
Both the market version (3.0.2) and this version are constantly FCing for me / not working at all under CM7 and I'm pulling my hair out trying to understand why.
The more I use this keyboard the more I like it. I keep noticing things that are just well thought out and useful, like the long-press for smilies on the left space bar and .com (and long-press for .net and others) button. Even common fractions on the center-right number pad. Very cool, very useful, and definitely a keeper. It's been rock solid and stable under VEGAn 5.1.1. I'll definitely be buying a copy when the full version is released.
Please give complete paths. There are several data directories on my system but none contain an apps folder. My system folder does though. I installed it and it shows but i can't enable it. Runs fine with just a standard install on vegan ginger.

If you are having trouble wilh Swype You might try flexT9

This alternative works really well. I had it for my previous 7" tablet but when I got the xoom it was no longer available. They now support the xoom and I've reinstalled it. Is from the makers of Dragon Naturally Speaking. It costs 4.95 but includes 4 input methods: swipe, voice input, writing (but not cursive) and typing.
I really like it when I have to take notes. It's pretty quick and is pretty good in swipe mode with adding the correct punctuation, though until you train it, it comes up with some pretty humorous (or irritating) guesses. Voice recognition is really quite good. For regular typing its fine but I prefer the Tablet keyboard (as it is just like a pc keyboard).
Consider checking this one out.

yeah. go to settings--language and input---keyboard settings-input settings-select "always show"
this is off the top off my head as i don't have the xoom with me at the moment. i believe that's what you do to have the keyboard icon show up in the notification bar whenever you start typing. u can hit that icon and an option to what keyboard you want to use will pop up. remember to check the boxes all the keyboards you want to use in the settings menu before you proceed or else the flext9 will not show up as an optional keyboard.

[Q] android stock keyboard

Any way to get stock ICS keyboard on an att vivid rom? The stuff in the market is sketchy
as of right now there isn't any way, however thumb keyboard is a fantastic substitute to the htc keyboard, or even perfect or swift key.
however thumb has been my favorite

I'm not trying to push a product its just that I've tried many different keyboards and this one has the most customization.

Im using Go Keyboard right now since its the most popular.
Hacker Keyboard is my favorite. It's very accurate, adjustable size, and loads of features.
Cool. Thanks. Let's hope we get stock ICS keyboard on this.

There is an "ICS Keyboard" in the market, both a free and paid version. Its actually one of my favorite keyboards simply because it's so responsive on my rather low end device. I switch around though, I keep Go Keyboard and Hacker's Keyboard for when I feel like switching things up.
I've used a LOT of keyboards on the market :-/

Installation Process
Question: is the installation process similar at all to the way you did it in the past? First install the keyboard, then go turn the keyboard on in settings, then go to a text input field and long-press and get settings, choose the newly installed keyboard? This is not working for me, I can install, and enable the keyboard, but I cannot find any way to switch my input method!
If you know the answer I'll thank your response
But seriously, thanks
