[Q] Encryption on KFHD? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think I can guess the answer already, but does the KFHD support SD card encryption as implemented in ICS and above?

Bumping this up with some more thoughts...I read on some of the Amazon forums that using the native email app with an Exchange server which requires encryption is *supposed* to "automatically" encrypt the device, but apparently it doesn't work. Has anyone seen or experienced this?

I can't encrypt Verizon Dev Edition

I have a verizon dev edition Moto X running 4.4.2 and I can't encrypt it. I want to keep it rooted, but encrypted. How can I encrypt it?
Thanks
I encrypted first then rooted and it worked (then wiped to stock and unencrypted since twrp can't see the encrypted space).
Are you trying to add work email with a security policy? If so Exchange Bypass for xposed (1.6) works great to bypass the encryption.

That seems to have worked. I restored the system partition and it looks like android stores all apps and settings on /data (yay!). However now that I am encrypted, how do I root the device? I can no longer flash zips.
Thanks
Edit: Also the reason I want the phone encrypted is because I just like knowing my personal data is relatively safe if the phone is stolen.
Check out this link for the twrp recovery file http://www.elementalxdesigns.com/ec...our-Moto-X-Developer-Edition-and-install-TWRP
Also I have concerns about being unencrypted as well. Especially since ADM can't remote wipe a device with TWRP.

Interesting. I managed to get it to work mounting /sdcard and /data as a tmpfs.
ADM never worked for me stock or not. I just use cerberus but I don't trust the remote wipe to function after having this much trouble with the encryption.
Doesn't the encryption slow your phone down a decent amount?

I haven't noticed a slow down on it yet. Full disclaimer: I don't play games though on my phone. It's possible they could be affected.

Root w/ Encryption

I did a couple of searches and came up empty but I am wondering if any ROM developers are working with encryption and root?
When I had my Galaxy S5 (Tmobile) it was first encrypted. I recall then once I rooted it I was no longer able to encrypt the device. I think there may have been some workarounds but they were pretty cumbersome to say they even worked at all.
I'm wondering if any developers are working that angle and if so should my inquiry be presented to developer of said ROM?
I also realize that encrypted devices do tend to read a bit slower than those no encrypted but I think I can live with that.
Please advise.
Best,
Hiatt

Hello Hiatt,
Thanks for using XDA Assist. What specific device do you currently have? There are so many devices here and each might deal with your question differently. I moved your other thread to off topic since it was referring to iPhones, but this one seems to have a more specific device in mind.
Thanks,

I presently have a Tmobile Galaxy S6 which is rooted and running Sick as Hell (version X).
From what I have read and heard it seems as though root and encryption together don't always play well together.
Also, it was the other post of mine that mentioned iPhones (the one about factory resets and eDiscovery).

Lol, that's what I said. The other post was more about the iPhone issue so I moved it to off-topic. Since you have a Galaxy S6, I'll move this thread there so people with that device can give you a more personalized answer.
I don't think that having root is an issue with encryption. I Had my S5 encrypted only problem was a ui crash when entering the boot password. That was specific to the rom I was using and simply had to enter password 1 or 2 characters at a time between errors.
But I do think there may be a problem with custom recovery and encryption.
My S5 was verizon, thus still locked bootloader and used safestrap to get to a custom recovery which wasn't always active.
I would talk to someone with a lot more knowledge then I about this further. But pretty sure just having root is not a problem the recovery is where you can have issues

Hi there,
Root + Encryption can work together as long as no custom recovery involved, so if you get your root by exploit instead of installing custom recovery almost 99% chance you can have your phone encrypted while preserving the root privilege.
My case explained here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/general/success-root-encryption-t3372958
I didn't have a problem with encryption and root. The only problem that I had was that my Galaxy S6 Edge needed to be encrypted before root. I could not encrypt my phone with the "stock" rooted kernel. Once I was encrypted, I could install TWRP and root via supersu systemless root.
Once I had root, I would use flashfire to back up and install because TWRP could not read the DATA partition since it was encrypted. For some reason, it seems once the phone has been decrypted, the data partition could be backed up with flashfire, and I would be able to restore a backup as well.
This is where I ran into issues. If you are flashing a custom rom that will require you to wipe data, your device will lose encryption. Because I can be somewhat of a crack flasher at times, and that I am too lazy to deal with having to re-encrypt and reinstall all my settings, I just opted to stick with an unencrypted phone.
Hopefully at some point, TWRP will be compatible with encryption so that lives will be easy for us crack flashers..until then, I will probably stick with an unencrypted device unless I just want to stick with a stock rom, or a custom rom that I can load up and not have to wipe data every time there is an update.

Encrypting the SD card, doesn't secure the data

I'm using the SM-T710 variant.
When I've encrypted the SD (Transend 32GB) card, I get confirmation it's been encrypted. I see the progress bar etc as it encrypts the files on the card.
But, if I put the card in a card reader and connect it to my PC, all the files on the card are visible and editable.
If I put the card in my Note 4, it thinks the card is encrypted.
The tablet is rooted stock ROM 6.01 MM, with Xposed and other Mods installed.
But, even disabling them and rebooting doesn't help.
Is there a fix, without wiping the tablet and trying again?
Thank you
Hi has anyone found a solution to the issue of SD card encryption? I've been trying to resolve this all weekend. Used multiple cards and tried formatting them, charging tablet to 100% and doing encryption. All claim to have worked but I can read the card and all files when I put in a SD card reader and connect to PC. Will probably return the tablet and pick up an iPad if this is an issue that cannot be resolved..

Then there's not much to suggest except to format the sd card and factory reset.
I had to do this to get internal encryption working on 2 other devices.
Even though it seemed successful it wasn't until I did the above.

SM-T818V APJ1 build - can't decrypt once encrypted

Hey all,
I have a SM-T818V device running 6.0.1 APJ1 build.
The device is currently encrypted for internal storage (there is no option listed to encrypt the device listed in the Lockscreen and Security settings where it is normally listed).
However, even after Factory Resetting the device, it still appears to be encrypted.
Anyone have an idea on how to decrypt the device once it has been encrypted? I've been scouring settings and searching forums for a way to do this, but not really seeing many references to this issue or real solutions.
Thanks!

Devices released with MM are encrypted by default. It can be disabled on devices that don't have locked bootloaders. However your device has a locked bootloader.

Thanks for the info!
What's weird though is that my friend has another MM (6.0.1) device but on SM-817V BP1 build and is able to encrypt and then factory reset to decrypt without an issue. And this device at least STARTED as decrypted, but it seems like once it's toggled to be encrypted even one time, it doesn't let you decrypt... ever.
Is there ANY way around this? For example, if I flash the stock OS, would that fix anything? I haven't seen an APJ1 SM-T818V ROM anywhere, but I can start asking around if this might help.
Thanks!

The T817 wasn't released with MM, so it wasn't shipped with encryption, it is optional.
Your device has always been shipped with encryption enabled by default.

Ok good to know. I'm seeing issues that I thought were related to encryption, but maybe not!
I will request the APJ1 OS in a different thread and see whether that clears things up.
Thanks again for the info.

Bypassing lock screen on stock unrooted phone without erasing userdata?

Hey guys,
Is there any way to either reset the lockscreen password or to backup all userdata from a Moto G5S plus that's upgraded to Android 8.0, is not rooted, is running stock ROM, does not have ADB debugging enabled and has no custom recovery?
Most likely no, I've never had a Motorola phone before though, and I couldn't find any workarounds/utilities, but perhaps I wasn't using the right keywords.
Thanks in advance,
Lada
Hi, same problem here. My son can't unlock his Phone with password that was working yesterday Just fine. He has his fingerprint enabled and password. Fingerprint is not enough and it wants also the pass which is not working. Debugging is disabled, stock Rom unrooted. We cant even export data from it. Any solutions before factory reset?
Afaik there's mo such method because the whole mechanism would be pointless if one can bypass lockscreen password just like that.
You'll need to use some Forensic tools for retrieving data. Not a sure shot method and definitely not a cheap one as the software cost very much.
You can search and find Stellar Phoenix (or similar alternatives).

I've tried several software, but they either only worked for a select few Samsung devices, or only with older versions of Android.
I was 95% sure it's a lost cause, just wanted to ask around, see if there are any Motorola-specific workarounds or whatever to try!

You can try this some of the method to unlock your device, i don't know if it works or not, but give it a try maybe it works.

I got to know that in an internship at an investigation agency. They use that software to solve criminal cases. It should work somehow but yes, may take significant time.

By all means, there must be software out there that can bypass whatever lockscreen, but I doubt it's "commercially available"
