[Q] Startup and device driver problems preventing me from upgrading/rooting P1010 - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I decided to try and upgrade my galaxy tab 1010 to Gingerbread in the hopes that it would fix a problem which is that whenever I click on the power button to open my tablet (not to turn it on but just to resume from sleep or whatever), the screen lights up black and the bottom lights are on but it takes countless retries to get the thing to actually appear or it just stays black. Even a restart is not enough at times. This is causing me problems with updating because to make a CWM backup for example, it has to boot into the menu which I can no longer see after it shuts off. Sometimes it works fine, other times I give up trying to get the main screen to show up. I can click on the buttons at the bottom and get the vibration feedback and can also hear the audio going up/down when I click the volume buttons but often the screen will stay black.
The 2nd problem is that although I have Kies installed, every time I connect my device to my laptop (Windows 7), the laptop will install drivers for it separately. This is a problem because in Odin for example when I try to flash CWM on to there, after I've flashed it, it will turn off in order to reboot meaning that it disconnects from the laptop and when it boots back up, the laptop does not recognize. So to fix that 2nd problem, I need a way to install drivers on there so that my laptop always recognizes it rather than installing every time.
Thanks for any help....the black screen thing is really frustrating me and I've done some searches where others have black screen problems but their are usually different and the device won't come on at all in those cases rather than come on sometimes and not come on other times unless I try several times.

Good news is that I managed to upgrade to gingerbread with the root and it was working...Odin did the trick though still can't get anything going on Superoneclick on my Galaxy Player because it's not recognized when in USB debugging mode. Upgrading did fix the problem of the screen not coming on and staying black.
Bad news....installed bloatware removal tool, removed a few apps which I was sure were non-essentials (Samsung movie guide, visit Britain, couple more like that)....and it seems to have hard bricked. I found this tutorial on hard-unbricking but it's for the p1000, dunno if it would apply to the p1010: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312391
So gonna either try that or since this thing isn't under warranty anymore, I have to find somewhere in Mississauga Canada which will do a hard unbrick on this.

[Q] HELP! SGS doing funny things - USB connected

Really need help guys. My SGS is doing REALLY funny things...
I just got my SGS a few days ago and so far all I've been doing is installing aps on it (no messing with rooting/flashing).
Today, I was trying to get Keis to work. I reinstalled Keis and unplugged and repluggeed my phone a few times and managed to get it to recognise.
Here's the problem, now it ALWAYS says USB connected on the top left hand corner. Everything seems ok except after a few minutes of the screen turning off, I can't turn it back on again. Absolutely no activity. If I try to turn it back on immediately after it goes off, it can come back on again.
Things get weirder. If I remove my battery or turn it off, I can't turn it back on again (it flashes a loading symbol in the middle of the screen for half a second then nothing happens). To turn it back on, I have to plug it in and wait for the charging screen to come on. THEN it comes on.
I've tried doing a factory reset but nothing changed... Is there a hardware fault? Perhaps flashing will solve the problem?
ps. When it's off, I can enter download mode but not recovery more unless I plug it in...
Sounds like a hardware problem on phone, But I beleive its more of a Grounding problem with your usb. Can you try it with another port or computer? Also does your pc/laptop have a grounding pin for its power supply? I noticed I get odd power spikes when I travel to asia as their power is not always good. You can always buy a surge protector for your computer and one for your samsung charger. Other then that see if you can get new KIEs (I Don't EVER use it as its crap and never reconizes my phone)
Also if you want to kick up a storm, get the thing replaced as it sounds like a phone hardware problem as it should not crash when you take battery out. Could be battery but better to change the whole thing.
Try activating USB DEBUG in settings. Check the option and restart.
It should solve the problem. You can UNCHECK again the option and the phone should work also without USB debug activated
It will happen again, it seem to me a problem with some USB port, or some cables, activating a *waiting for USB* option BEFORE the ROM loading
Thanks
Thanks for the advice guys. Last night it suddenly started behaving itself after the 10th or so hard reset *phew*
Very strange problem and I think I will stay well clear of Kies from now on... Samsung make a good phone but lousy software...

[HELP] Display glitches/black screen

Greetings,
I'm not experienced with android devices, so i thought i'd ask here first before trying to do anything.
Since a few months ago some weird things started happening to my X8 - random display glitches and blackouts at completely random intervals (sometimes one or even two a day, sometimes it can last two or more weeks w/o an incident, i haven't figured out any relation yet).
Glitches manifest in distorted view on screen - shifted up/down/sideways - or colored graphics artefacts - up to completely bizarre patterns of random-colored pixels covering the whole screen. Weirdly enough, pushing power button as if to lock the screen usually alleviates the issue, sometimes i need to do it few times to remove completely, but it works. Touchscreen works fine, but i need to tap the "right" spot on the screen, not where it's displayed on the screen ("right" as in where the element is when the screen is not glitching).
The other issue (may be related) i'm having with the phone is random screen "blackouts" - the screen goes completely black and the power button cycling doesn't help - but the phone still reacts to screen input (i.e. i can unlock the screen by dragging the slider, launch app, start/stop music playback and so on). I can see the backlight on, so it's definitely screen/gfx hardware issue, not backlight. If i try to reboot the phone, it hangs on either shutdown or boot up. Removing the battery, placing it back and booting the phone up doesn't help - it vibrates as usual, i see the backlight go up, but screen stays black and i can't interact with the phone even if i leave it there for a few minutes (which is more than enough for it to boot up - it usually takes ~30 seconds till full boot). Also the backlight won't go off. It usually helps to boot normally if i hit the phone with a palm on the back side and/or leave it alone for a while. This issue is much more rare (only had it three times), but it puts the phone out of service for a while, so it's an issue for me.
Now, the device info:
Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 E15i
015 baseband
10W44
Unlocked bootloader
Alfs8 kernel (2.6.29.6-Alfs v08a 24/03/2012)
GingerDX v026 ROM
No cpu tweaks done, cpu governor "ONDEMAND", cpu speeds 122-600.
The glitches started when i was still using the older version, GindgerDX v013 with locked bootloader, i have done factory reset and flashed a new version with new kernel (and unlocked the loader along the way), but apparently it did not help fix the issues.
I can't provide and screenshots/photos of the issue because the only camera i have access to at most times when it happens is my phone one and, obviously, i can't use that in this case
The question is: can i still try to fix it by myself (i can do it if it doesn't involve disassembling the phone completely - i don't have the screwdrivers required) by software tweaks or other techniques or should i reflash stock kernel/rom, apply for warranty and hope they find the defect and fix it? I really do like the phone. Or, maybe, you have encountered anything resembling these issues and may shed some light on what's happening.
Appreciate any input in trying to figure out and fix this.
Thank you if you have read all this even if you can't help me, cheers!
1st problem could be 'Screen Cut' issue which is solved using kernel without FPS Cap...
2nd problem usually happens on my phone with miniCM9 3.0.2 but shows splash and boot animation...
Can you see the splash screen and the bootanimation? Because my friends' Xperia Ray has the issue on official firmware... so it could be hardware damage...
Try unlocking the screen then press the power button then press it again...
and also try flashing the stock firmware... If it doesn't work... I think you should live with it...
Sounds like a hardware problem to me. Reflash stock kernel and ROM and full wipe and then flash a different ROM and see it it still happens. If it does I think it is advisable to send it to Sony for repair.
Sent from my E15i using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for your replies, i'll try reflashing the stock rom and see if it still happens.
@Lily48: no, no splashcreen or boot animation, just black screen and visible backlight.
I have the same problem and I checked it many times and my conclusion is....ITS A HARDWARE PROBLEM NOT SOFTWARE..

Sorry for double post, but this is important update:
My phone died this morning with the permanent black screen syndrome. Until i rebooted i could use it to receive phone calls or even listen to music (i knew where to touch to activate the features). However it would not boot sompletely after restart, even if i leave it for ~hour. Connecting to flashtool showed that it does boot to a certain stage, but no GUI (for user interaction with haptic feedback) available - the flashtool does show that device connected with usb debugging enabled.
I reflashed the stock ROM, now it's apparently stuck in some sort of bootloop - it keeps on connecting and disconnecting. But the screen is still black, with backlight. If i remove the battery, replace it and just connect to pc w/o trying to boot on, it acts normally as if trying to charge - backlight activates for a few seconds if i touch a key and green led is lit, but still the screen is black.
I will RMA it tomorrow, thanks for help, hopefully i'll get a new one, or they'll repair this one so it does not glitch on me again. Anyway it was/is a good phone, i absolutely love it.
Wish me luck =]

It is a hardware problem and Sony Service Center is the last option you have.. if your X8 is in warranty period.
I did the same and they replaced its display with new one.
Hello, reporting back in:
Just got my X8 back, it really was a hardware problem. They changed the screen now it works as good as new =]
Thanks everyone for support

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 won't work if not plugged on external power source

Hi guys,
The following problem has taken me litterally DAYS of reading XDA, trying everything I could, but still no solution. Googling and searching this forum didn't help either, and it's totally weird.
It's a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000, on which were installed, almost two years ago, the ClockWorkMod recovery, Darky's ROM, Froyo, and everything was fine for months. Then, one day, out of nowhere, it switched off, without notice. Impossible to switch it on again! I remembered having seen some strange battery behavior few days before, like falling from 80% to 30% with no reason, so I thought of a battery issue. I plugged it for a full night. In the morning, I was able to boot it, but not easily, and all apps were crashing: during boot, or when launched manually. Yes, all I tried were crashing! Then, the phone became fully not bootable: press the power button, the screen shows "Samsung GT-I9000", then switches off...
I ordered a new battery: same result.
A guy from a phone repair store told me to plug the phone, and keep the power button down for 2 minutes: after this, I could reboot the phone, and thus, wipe data (factory reset). But it didn't help.
After "playing" a bit with it, I realized that the problem is:
the phone won't boot if an external source of power is not connected (as said above, white text shows, then the phone "dies")
if started with power cord/usb, the phone will work fine, all the time
if started with power cord/usb, and the external power source removed once the phone is booted, the phone will work fine, UNTIL the screen goes black for power saving mode or by pressing pwoer button, after which, within seconds, you can't open the phone anymore. I mean: if you press the start/power button immediately after the screen goes black, the screen goes on again, and the phone is ok. If you wait for few seconds, it's over, you can't do anything, and have to reboot the phone. This said, the phone doesn't vibrate, so I suppose it's not really off. But then... what is this state??
I really tried my best: updated to GB2.3.6, bricked my phone trying to re-install the CWM and having a bootloop, installed and used Odin and Heimdall, reverted to stock kernel, etc, etc, etc.
I feel sorry to bother you guys, I was really convinced that with the incredibly huge amount of data, how-tos, explanations, etc. I would manage to get rid of this, but this problem, though I don't really think it's hardware (but maybe it is?) stayed across so many kernels, roms, etc. that it's killing me!
For the record:
Model number: GT-I9000
Micro-software (?): 2.3.6
Baseband: I9000XXJW4
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJW7-CL1125830 [email protected] #2 (problem was the same with [email protected] #2)
Version number: GINGERBREAD.XXJW4
Any help would be greatly appreciated, considering that a wireless phone that needs to be wired is a little bit of an issue...
Thanks in advance !

That's a very strange problem... let's try something, remove the battery, sim card and sd card and hold the power button for 1-2 minutes, btw when the screen is off, is really the phone off or just the screen? did you try to make a call to your phone when the screen is off?

Hi timberman thanks for the answer!
You're very right: I totally forgot to say that what initially allowed me to restart my phone "regularly" was this procedure of pressing the power button for 2 minutes (hint given by a man from a repair shop). Before this, I couldn't (kind of a bootloop).
It's a very good question! I don't think the phone is really off in fact, because there isn't this vibration saying the phone turned off... Let me try to call it!
F..k! I was redirected right away to the voicemail... so... phone was off
I'm starting to think it's an harware issue... I reinstalled lots of ROMs, kernel, etc. Same ****...
Any idea?

Hi! Answering is already nice
I tried the button pressed for 2 minutes without battery: didn't change anything.
I tried playing a sound: MAN, YOU'RE A GENIUS!!! Launching the music, then forcing the screen off with power button lets the music play, and OF COURSE, I can reactivate the screen by pressing the home button. The screen goes off normally again after few seconds, but the music is still playing, etc. So, as long as the music goes, the bug doesn't happen!
Other hints:
For some time already, when I was removing the phone from my ear after a call, quite often, the screen was staying off, and I had to press a lot of buttons to have it on again, and be able to close the call
The moment where it crashes when booting without power is the very INSTANT where the initial white text (Samsung Galaxy S) goes brighter. So, if you unplug the power cord just after this, the boot ends normally. In summary, something happens at boot just after screen brightness changes which is the same thing happening when the screen goes off for power saving. All this, only when no external power is plugged.
Hehe, we (you) are making progress

Hi again, it seems like your phone is unable to exit the deep sleep mode or something like that so, let`s try another thing, in ICS or JB there´s an option in the developer option settings that unfortunately is not present in gingerbread roms, so, you can try to switch to a ICS/JB rom and go to settings-developer options and disable the "PM sleep mode" let`s see what happens then

I tried to install ICS, with a GREAT tutorial found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494493 Sadly, the phone reboots after installing the ICS kernel, and then doesn't work anymore, I had to reinstall the Gingerbread (I tried twice).
Last news: I let the phone play music (sound muted!!) for about 12 or 18h: all was fine! So I decided to pause the music, and see what happens. Boom ((c) Steve Jobs)!! The screen went black, and phone was "dead". I was expecting this, so no panick, I put back my SIM card, my SD card, and tried to reboot, with power cord plugged: it boots until the screen shows the small loader animation, then the empty battery image, but then goes black again, instead of showing the charging battery!! Download mode is still available, so I'll try to reflash the kernel, say.
It's like if each time screen was put black, phone was dying.
I can't stress enough how I appreciate your help: even if we can't save my phone, it's very pleasant to be able to TRY things. Thanks man!! :good:
Update: I reinstalled all... and it's not, even with power cord in, going further than the "Samsung Galaxy S" white text. The moment this picture disappears from screen, phone is dead. For good this time ?

Hi! No, I didn't, I used Odin. But now, I can't try anything anymore The only "results" I can get from this phone are:
- enter download mode and update from Odin (maybe from Heimdall, too, but I didn't check)
- reboot until the first moment the screen goes black, after which, the phone becomes fully unresponsive

Galaxy Tab 10.1wifi is going to be thrown out the window !

Ok so this will be my second post, no one replied to my first.
Will try to explain what the problem is. in as much detail as I can.
Please help me out guys !
So, tab was in debug mode, messed up using odin, trying to root, not sure what went wrong there and gave up.
Rest of the day tab worked fine.
During the night it was not turned off but left on charger, icon showing.
I listen to audio book while falling asleep
When I woke up, pressed on and nothing, black screen
Panic and frustration followed.
New charge cable, black screen
Searched internet, did the button combo's , took back off, disconnected battery, drained battery, still black screen.
Disconnected all cables inside, reconnected, black screen
Conncted to win7 pc, by holding down power and vol down, pc sees unknown device in APX mode.
Installed various drivers, all I could find that might work, installed and seen in device manager.
Followed nvflash guides, get an error usb write failed.
List devices command, nothing appears.
Installed Samsung Kies. cant connect , using different drivers also.
Odin cant see the device either. Pdanet installed, same outcome.
Also the sdk route, always no device found
I havent got new battery yet, cant afford one at the moment.
With everything I tried it always comes down to device not being seen even though it does appear in device manager.
Installed usbdevieuw software , check the properties, it does say 0mA , which is different to when I check my usb keyboard or mouse, they do have power 90mA etc. which is weird.
I have read and tried just about everything concerning my specific device. I am stuck.
No idea what to try next.
I understood that apx = download mode., which would be fine if I could see something on the tab screen. I know that normally when into download mode you have to use vol up to cross over to the right icon.
So, power + vol down... wait till its in device manager on pc, then vol up. Tried this, seeing as the screen is black I just waited a bit and then vol up, guess work actually.
Anyway, if someone has any ideas etc please let me know.
Thank You All
Try This

Thank you !! for responding. I did as you suggested, Its cool software.
that being said, no matter what option I choose I get The system cannot find the path specified. To me that means that the tablet cannot be entered even though it does show up in device manager samsung android phone> android adb interface.
I mailed samsung help desk and got a reply saying, take it to your nearest samsung repair store. .. THEY can fix it......as I expected they would say.
Im still wondering if the battery is causing the problems. As screen is black, when on charger stays black.
However if the tab is seen on my pc, does this mean tab has power?????
I have no idea how to test the battery without replacing it.
Im guessing tab is fully bricked and if so would that explain the no battery charging icon??? and lack of any other screens lol
Anyway, I have learnt so much from reading this forum. I admire the great work and assistence provided.
Guess my tab problem is either too easy to provide a fix for or hardly no one has a clue how to fix my tab :silly:
Please respond and help me out!!!

Device stuck in download mode

My wife Nokia 7 Plus was found in download mode (white screen with Android One logo) and is stuck in this mode. I've never done any unlock bootloader or root or anything on it (thus I did on other phones so I'm not totally stranger to it) and I'm 100% sure she didn't tried anything strange either. The phone is completely stock and probably with the last update as it went back new from repair a few months ago (for screen brightness issue) and I did update everything possible before she used it again.
The phone start automatically and immediately I see the white screen with AndroidOne logo and after a few ms it refresh and it's the same screen with the back text "Download mode" at the top.
I've tried to force shutdown and reboot by long pressing power. I cannot keep it shutdown, it goes back to Download Mode screen.
I've tried to restart start with power + vol up or power + vol down, power + vol up + vol down. Same.
I've tried to let it die on battery, charge it, and here it's a black screen with the large battery logo and a white text at the top saying: Download mode. After a few minute I try to boot and it's back to the white screen.
What can I tried next before I send it back for repair and it will be probably wiped again...
Side story, I've almost force her to switch from iPhone to Android because of price of the devices, and so far she is not converted at all with all the trouble we got with this Nokia.
As last before send to service try wipe in recovery, if not boot to recovery via buttons, try if your download mode is recognised by fastboot and reboot to recovery using: fastboot reboot AND IMMEDIATELY HOLD BUTTONS POWER and VOLUP until show "green android icon with no command

I'm having the same problem. Exactly what you said. I didn't root my device or even attempt to do anything. I bought Nokia because they were purely stock and delivered some quality mobile phones. I've got only this phone as my daily driver. So tell me if you have got the issue fixed and how much did it cost and how long it took. It's been stuck with that 'android one' logo and a small message that reads 'Download mode' on top. I've tried everything. And what I'm worried about is, my phone's out of warranty and I'm a student. I hope you got it fixed for some reasonable cost. Please reply to me ASAP.
My wife's phone also has had this exact same problem.
I have tried all the tricks mentioned above including ADB mode (it could not find the phone).
The phone is supposed to be under warranty. So I took it back to the place of purchase.
However, the phone has a tiny crack in the corner of the screen which my wife and I were not aware of. So Nokia have indicated that unless I get the crack fixed, the warranty is voided and they will not fix the boot problem.
Because the broken crack is not covered by warranty, Nokia want $270 for a new screen before they will look at the software problem caused by the pie update.
I took it to a third party repair shop to see if there is a cheaper option. They cannot fix it either.
So the 5 month old Nokia phone is now useless.
But if anyone can comes across a solution for this, can they please post it here.
Thanks.
Same here. I told the guy on the phone about the crack. But he told me it should not be a problem. Now I got an email that I needed to pay 185 euro's to repair the screen.
Because of their FW-update, my phone became unuseful.
When I get it back (not repaired) I will try a OST on it.
I solved my issue via this procedure:
https://www.techmesto.com/possible-fix-nokia-smartphone-stuck-on-download-mode-after-ota-update/
I solved it via drivers: https://github.com/StollD/nokia-driver-installer/raw/master/out/Phone_Nokia_USB_Driver_v1.4.0.exe
WTF Finally I fix it!!!

My Nokia 7 Plus got stuck in download mode after accidently pressing all buttons simu
Yes I know that sounds like a weird title and maybe you are wondering why did I do that? notice the word accidently.
I was just trying to fly my newly bought drone x pro for the first time and the controller has a little pull out extendable cradle to hold the phone in
if you want to view what the FPV camera is viewing while in flight and because of the bad design with all buttons on the same side of the Nokia 7 plus, unbeknownst to me all 3 buttons were being pressed at the same time and before I knew it my phone was shutting down and rebooting to this ridiculous download mode and the rest is history!
So I just thought I would mention this to anyone who happened to or happens to land in the same situation as me to be aware that you should probably put a little bit of sponge taped to the side of your phone over the volume buttons to possibly prevent it from being pressed simultaneously when flying your fpv drone.
If all else fails you could always connect the drone to your phone and then just put your phone in your pocket and fly blind by simply walking with the drone or rather running since they are pretty nippy. I am a bit bummed as this would have been a very convenient way of checking how full my guttering is of leaves without having to climb a ladder every time to check!?
Anyway I also used the fix here: https://www.techmesto.com/possible-fix-nokia-smartphone-stuck-on-download-mode-after-ota-update/
after downloading the nokia phone drivers from github.
If you are on windows 10 pro you may get a screen protector warning not to proceed further?
Ignore it and continue installing the drivers!
So far I got the Nokia Logo back and then it just hung there for several minutes without being recognised by the pc.
So I simply disconnected the phone from the pc and suddenly got the familiar nokia tone start up but then black screen again.
I realised it had been on the download mode so long it had completely drained the battery so now I am charging it.
Fingers crossed when I power up again I will at least have my phone back, sadly minus the data. (I will of course at least have all my google notes and contacts etc backed up to google servers at least they are useful for something!!)
I can't recall the last time I used it but I am pretty sure I had the SD card set as the main download so hopefully fingers crossed that data should have remained untouched, not sure how Android sets this up anymore?
Long time since gingerbread when you could still install and run apps as a completely separate partition.
All became a bit confusing after that so rooting became something I did hesitantly and as a definite last resort!
Anyway I am rambling on. If I find the fix works I will let you know.
Thanks for reading and thanks in advance if the fix works !!:good::good:

So it worked, I have my phone back! Thank you so much for this solution!
Sadly my SD card was wiped too!!!!! super pissed off about this, many photos and notes and other files that I will never get back unless if I recall I may have made a manual backup of at least some of the earlier stuff I put on here a few months back on my pc?
Nokia will be hearing from me for sure!!!!! I want a 50% refund for messing with my life and my time. How can they send an update that essentially breaks a phone for a bit!???!!!!!!
