so whos upgrading? - Raspberry Pi Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just wondering since the announcement a day or so ago that new model b Pis are going to ship with 512mb of ram instead of the current 256mb who is going to upgrade, and has anyone here actually got a 512mb model yet? i hear there are a few out in the wild already, i considered ordering one but decided to hold off (well until payday at least)

Just ordered a b model a week ago, let's see which one I get eventually, probably the 256mb, will go for the 512mb version too when I receive the 256mb version.

Im not Upgrading YET, I currently Run a XBMC port (RaspBMC) and using as my media player.
Extra RAM wont make much of a difference, So unless i start Looking into Raspbian Or Python Imma Stick with my 256MB
256MB Limit's (That I have Found)
- 3 Tabs in Browser
- 2 Terminals Running Commands (1 Copying File to Diff Folder, Other Updating)
- Kinda Slow for YouTube
- Torrents aren't that Good

I think the difference between rev 1 and rev 2 does not worth to upgrade.
Howeverr the board was redesigned a little bit, so it is much easier to create case for it, and the 512 MB RAM sounds better, but from this device you won't get way better performance.
It is great for testing or developing purposes, but not the best for replacing your home media server.

Once I put my 256MB one into use, I'll probably buy a 512MB one for playing around with, at least until I find a use for it, and replace it again...
That's my intended upgrade path right now - put it into use, buy new one until new project appears, then use it, buy new one once it's in use

Most interesting part:
"With this in mind, we’re pleased to announce that from today all Model B Raspberry Pis will ship with 512MB of RAM as standard. If you have an outstanding order with either distributor, you will receive the upgraded device in place of the 256MB version you ordered."

I'm not using my RPi for applications that would need than 256mb of ram so I'll be waiting till the next version before I get my third RPi.

I'm definitely going to. I use my current 256 pi for Raspbmc. Once they release the Android port for it, I am definitely gonna have to grab the newer version.

I think I'll stick to my 256mb pi's , A upgrade would be nice but I really don't need it.
Got one running an ssh server (for school) and running a mumble server.

I use my PI for doing easy assembler learning tasks, so there's no cause to switch to the newer model when I will build a NAS, I have to buy the new model, I pretend...

I'm thinking of getting one of those two handsets as an alternative to the Wings, probably the HP iPAQ 614c. I know it's not perfect, but it does look to be a decent fully featured Windows Mobile handset. Apparently the ship date for the HP 614c is the 18th February, nicely coinciding with my birthday the following week, so it may happen hehe.

[Q] Who is holding off for the 32GB

We all have seen the news that a 32GB is coming and will be around for the holiday season, my brother works at Best Buy here in Canada and his inventory shows a 32GB as coming soon for $269 CAD so its defiantly coming.
Just wonder how many of you will hold off on the 16 now that the 32 will be out soon.

I don't think you'll get any "Yes I'll hold off" answers in this forum, as most of the people are here because they have a Nexus7
Would have liked a 32 GB but with OTG don't think its terribly necessary.
Since N7 isn't selling in my country (Brasil) i will have only 1 shot when a friend of mine visit NY next week. But i dont think 32GB will be available till desember.

After 3 failed RMAs from Google Play, I got a refund and just picked up a new Nexus 7 from Walmart last Friday. I'm thinking about returning my Nexus 7 16GB and waiting on the 32GB model.
Haven't decided, but will need to in the next few days.

Don't you know this by now, Ravynmagi... what works for 1 person works for everyone. Duh.
I however am doing just fine with 16GB for the most part. The biggest space issue I have is when I go on long trips (which is rare, but happens) and want to watch TV shows or movies to burn up the plane time. Fun fact - even with 64GB of space I'd run into the same issues. It's significantly easier for me to have a 500GB external (which has about 400GB worth of media) that I can pop in, copy media, disconnect, and be done with it. I'd likely use OTG in these situations regardless of what sized tablet I had. That said, these situations are rare, and 16GB is more than enough for me on the regular day to day.
I will say this. I find cloud services significantly easier to manage because everything is in one location. For me, Subsonic is such a win for music/videos because I host it out of my basement and I own the server, the material, etc. I handle it my way.
One centralized box for everything, especially on my own very LAN, is such a :good::good::good::good::good:. Couple that with the fact the same server is running "owncloud" (think Dropbox but on your own server) is yet another :good::good::good::good::good:.
But there again, just my 2c.
Are external storage (2,5“ HD) working with otg?

it may not be official but we know its coming and the fact my brothers bestbuy inventory shows it plus other stores with a price tag but no date means its coming. I'm sure it will be released for the holiday season, stupid if they don't.
I have a 16GB S3 and i can tell you that is not enough and had to buy a 32GB microSD. I don't like the whole cloud storage thing what if i'm on the go an have no internet access. OTG is fine but its not very portable. I mean if we had a proper micro usb to micro sd then 16GB would be fine, hopefully the kickstart project in the OTG thread kicks off.

nexus 7 8gb being discontinued for 16gb and 32gb

Apparently we who preordered the nexus 7 early got bamboozled (lol) , the 8gb will be discontinued and the 16gb will take its place at $199. While the 32gb will replace the 16gb.

Deal with it bros.
You bought the product because were happy with the price and gear being offered.
The Nexus 7 is a damn good deal any way you look at it. $50 extra to have this thing for 2-3 months which would have otherwise been spent dreaming of purchasing one and browsing sites for the best deals all day?
I'm happy with my purchase still. I feel bad for anyone who got an 8gb though.

Not to mention we early adopters got $25 plat store credit. So it's not that bad.

I hardly buy anything from the play store. While the credit is nice to have, I rather see a less amount on my credit card bill.
It's something I'll have to get over but I technically haven't even paid for it yet since the bill isn't due lol. So.. yeah, in that case I'm a little annoyed.

I knew that a that better / cheaper SKU would show up, didn't expect it before Christmas TBH, but I don't care I wanted to experience stock Jelly Bean asap. I've ordered a usb-otg cable and tasty 32 GB USB 3.0 pendrive, which has the benefit of being used over multiple devices.
I'm not really mad I'm just disappointed in Google's marketing. Not a lot of people buy into the nexus brand and Its really not nice to do what they are going to do but since I love this device so much I'm not going to get mad, I'm just going to right them a nice message of what I think about this on October 29th.
Now I'm thinking if I should buy the nexus 4 when they release it or wait.
I'm wondering if people sending in 8gb sets for RMA would get a 16gb back.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?
I've had mine for about a week and love it. I have a 30 day return policy, if my store got them by Oct 29, wonder if they would let me return it?

I guess you can still call it a rumor. But the 32GB is obviously real at $250 and the 16GB isn't going away, so it'll almost certainly drop to $200. There isn't room for an 8GB model.
I think it's just common sense at this point that the 8GB model is about to get clearanced at the end of the month.

From a business stand point, they are going to sell the 8GB at 199 till it's out of stock, then push the 16gb down to 199 and throw in the 32gb at 250.

2-3 months? That's perhaps true if you're in the US, where it's been released first - not counting some later adopters who didn't get it from day 1. That's not true anymore in some other countries, where it's been out for quite less than 2 months.

Guess what? In those countries where it's been released more recently, the credit is still active... and thus I'd bet the early 32GB buyers will still get it.
So, yes, it IS bad, when there's a 32GB model scheduled for the same price as your 16GB unit, 45 days (since there are obviously numerous leaks) after it's been available in your country.

I have to agree. The people that have had there's for 31-45 days get screwed the hardest. They're just outside the return/refund window and have had so little time with there's to really enjoy it before a price drop and a higher capacity model for the same damn price is released...
I'm one of those people and I'm pretty miffed... I'll be very caution and wait 2-3 months after every new Nexus release or simply not buy from Google at all... we shall see...

Bought the 8 at launch from the Play Store to see if I would like using a tablet. Now I use it all the time. Rely on it. So. Afraid to root it in case I brick it. Want root for Stickmount. 32G means I can have a load of storage and root my 8 with no fear. Cool. Also, its easy to forget just how low cost these devices really are. I think the 32 is a response to the ongoing criticism of the non expandable storage capacity. I like that they listened.

A UK based catalouge retailer called Argos has published it's Christmas supplement with the 32GB being £199.99
Now they have stopped the Play Store credit and freebies, along with great economies of scale, maybe the 8 GB will get a price cut to undermine the cheapest Kindle Fire?

I just wish I had known there was a 32gb coming considering I bought my N7 a month ago. I need more space than 13gb of usable memory, that's like 5 hd games.
I think this is part of the reason behind the Google Play $25 credit honestly, so really I only paid $225

Glad I waited, just bought the 16GB.
-Brought to you by Marino's Galaxy Nexus-
What bothers me is that the resell value was slashed. I mean if you bought a 16gb for $250+tax, you could probably resell it for $225 on top of all of initial offerings we've gotten from Google. Now it is $199, you'd be lucky to get $175 for it. Plus with the upgraded memory people aren't going to want the 16gb so you'll have to practically give it away.
Oh well. Life is full of surprises. They should have just came out with a 16/32gb unit out of the gate and stop screwing around with 8gb. Memory is so cheap now-a-days that it is pathetic that we allow manufactures keep us in this rut. I mean I had 16gb CF in my old Dell x51v Windows 5.0 "palmtop" haha. Honestly units SHOULD be coming in as 32/64gb these days... or even 64/128gb.
Media consumption is getting deeper and deeper. With games using 4gb each, 8/16gb just don't cut it without sacrifice.
Full agree on that post. But ive learned my lesson, i will wait at least till Christmas to get a Nexus 4 and closely watch the rumors.

Welcome to the world of consumer electronics. It is a game that is impossible to win. There will always be better devices and lower prices right around the corner.
All we can do is jump into the pool and enjoy the swim. It's pointless to waste time getting tweaked about the kick ass slide and diving board at the neighbors pool.

I will second that. I do not regret paying full price for mine. That's always the price you pay for buying tech. It gets cheaper and specs always improve. Give it a few more months and there will be something better and cheaper on the market, that I have no doubt.

October: We put our smartest people in a room and came up with a genius idea: 32GB! All the storage you've always wanted all along!
I bought a 16gb at launch. Sold it on Friday last week for $150, bought my 32gb the next day.

ive got a 16gb one and have all my music and books in the cloud,im from uk its not only usa who get cloud ,overall im happy with what ive got and hardly touch my s2(32gb) anymore apart from calls and im due an s3 mid november that will be wasted in my pocket
im stuck
I sold my 16gb nexus 7 to my roommate because 16gb was to small for me and i want to buy the 32 gb version
But i also want the nexus 10 or the new chrome book as a replacement for my Transformer prime
the Transformer prime is ok especially for what i do (I use it for school/occasionally web surfing) but it has no real upside. it still lags, and slows down for no reason.
Anyone have any ideas what should i do?
Im thinking nexus 7 and probably the chromebook, its got the same processor and ram.
I'm being philosophical about this.
I bought the 16GB version three months ago so I've certainly had my money's worth.
Wife seems disinterested in having my N7 to make way for a 32GB upgrade and then Google announces the N4 16GB and I need to upgrade from my HD2 anyway.
Wife needs to upgrade her phone, too, so she can have the HD2.
My N7 still has about 6GB free space and that's with a lot of apps and stuff which would usually be on my phone.
Once I've bought the N4 and moved a lot of apps and stuff over to that there will be sufficient room on the N7 for my needs.
Plus there's still OTG and Drop Box ... Or VPN to my own local server ..

The New Zealand Nexus 4 Thread

Updated 15/7/2013
This thread is a place for New Zealand Nexus 4 owners, or wanna-be owners to discuss/report/speculate on, or just chat about our phones.
I've compiled a list of options showing where/how we can purchase the Nexus 4 in New Zealand...
Expert Infotech (Updated 15/7/2013)
16GB Black Nexus 4 $548.06 NZD
http://einfo.co.nz/shop/lg-nexus-e960-16gb-black-special-price-p-27320.html
2degrees Online Shop (Updated 22/7/2013)
16GB Black Nexus 4 $499 NZD
https://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/sh...t__sorig=/SelectCat.do?catId=21&productId=290
Warehouse Stationary (Updated 15/7/2013)
16GB Black Nexus 4 $699 NZD
http://www.w[email protected]WSL-B2C
MobiCity NZ (Updated 15/7/2013)
16GB Black Nexus 4 $678.86NZD

Here is the US GooglePlay Option...
Nexus 4 from Google Play USA (Updated 30/1/2013) This option involves using:
A VPN (recommend Tunnelbear), http://www.tunnelbear.com/
A parcel forwarding service in the US - NZ Post have YouShop http://www.nzpost.co.nz/products-services/online-shopping/youshop (It's worth noting that some members here have had a very mediocre experience with YouShop lately - One has even had his phone stolen after arriving in the YouShop warehouse! This is not indicative of everybody's dealings with them, but I would recommend caution with this option. There are plenty of other companies which may give you a better end result).
Setting up your Google Wallet with the YouShop address in the US (or whatever the address is of your Parcel Forwarding company)
I have read that some people have set up entirely new Google Accounts, so that may also help...
Finally you'll need a whole lot of luck - this seems to have worked for a few people, but not others.
16GB Black Nexus 4 (Ships in 1-2 weeks) $349 USD Shipping costs in the US $15 USD Shipping to NZ via Youshop $15 USD GST/DUTY $87 USD Total Cost $465 USD or $567 NZD
8GB Black Nexus 4 (Ships in 1-2 weeks) $299 USD Shipping costs in the US $15 USD Shipping to NZ via Youshop $15 USD GST/DUTY $0 Total Cost $329 USD or $401 NZD
The US Google Play Store is by far and away the cheapest option available, so if you can do this option, I would recommend you give it a go.
Here are some links to the cases and screen protectors I have on my Nexus 4...
Cases:
SF Matte Black - Rearth Ringke SLIM for LG Google Nexus 4 Soft Feeling Premium Hard Case - ECO Package [Revised Version] $9.99 USD Standard Shipping (averages 10-16 business days) $12.00 USD Total Cost $20.99 USD or $26 NZD (I have a white and a black one of these - seem pretty good so far. Light and slim. There's a minor fitment issue with the original batch of these, but the manufacturers have since revised it and they are replacing the defective ones for free)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A81H176/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=A8YCUEQIOX5AP
Screen Protectors:
Google Nexus 4 Screen Protector Steinheil Dual $13.99 USD Shipping $5.04 USD Total $19.03 or $23 NZD (I have used SPG for all my phones screen protectors and they have been great. This one for the Nexus 4 has a front and back screen protector)

Good to know I am not the only one suffering. So far it seems you have already reached into most of the options, I also thought about YouPost but the amount of work required not to mention the added costs, I don't think its worth it. I am just hoping that stocks arrive at the parallel imported sites and the price isn't too hefty. I wish us kiwis weren't discriminated by Google, they have a lot of potential customers here in NZ.
Im also waiting impatiently. I guess we just have to wait, New zealand is such a tiny market compared to other countries. Im keeping an eye out for overseas stores that will ship here to get stock

Ordered two via YouShop. I'm lucky, haven't received any of those delayed stock emails, but haven't received a shipping email either. I'll keep you updated if everything goes swell

Me too!!! We should hopefully know more about the price from the parallel imported stores in the next week or two. Google is potentilally missing out by not offering us (and other countries) these services (I guess it's us who ultimately miss out though)!. We may not have the biggest market, but we would be loyal! I'd also love to be able to buy my music from the playstore instead of itunes. I already have 4500 songs uploaded to google music in anticipation of having to downgrade storage on my phone from 16GB internal and 64GB external to the 16GB of the nexus 4, but I don't have the new phone to stream it on!

If you find out anything it would be great if you could keep us in the loop.

Great stuff!!! Did you use a NZ credit card with the YouShop address attached to it? Looking forward to the updates. Good to know some of us got lucky...
I'm a bit worried about the price because of what happened with the nexus 7,
I got all excited about a cheap tablet then it ends up being almost as much as an ipad.

Yeah, just a mastercard.. but still currently in "limbo"
So gutted that I didnt get mine. Had my sister in the US getting me one but said she kept getting errors. Guess I'm going to have to wait 2months or so before stock becomes stable enough.

We can only hope that we don't have to wait that long...my guess is we'll get a very limited supply through the parallel importers. The question will be, who is willing to pay the price they are asking....

I reckon you would be best to hold out for the nexus 4. If you're willing to wait a little bit longer then it looks like sony might actually be bringing out a flagship model that will compete directly with the iphone 5 and SGS3 while still being very compatible with the custom rom community...that being said, I know I don't want to wait and I'd love to get my hands on a nexus 4 tomorrow!...
Still no update in regards to availability in NZ...any new info to add guys? :banghead:

So I messaged LG and asked when they expected to be selling the device in NZ and the reply was they had no idea when or if they would be selling it here. That leaves this in the hands of parallel importers which will be random and pricey.
Started looking on eBay in US and Aus but it was all getting to hard but then as luck would have it I saw someone listing one on TradeMe for $735 and I just had to have it so I used the buy now lol I think this might end up being a good price for this device I just can't wait to get my hands on it.

Great stuff mate! I had a look there this morning and didn't see anything... otherwise I would have done that myself....
My 2 Nexus 4's just shipped to YouShop. Hopefully they come without any issues.
I think ill end up forking out for a parallel import for the sake of a warrantee

Good stuff. 8 or 16GB models? If you have a spare 16GB and feel like selling, I'd be keen to make an offer

I think that'll be the only way I'll get my hands on one as well. Unless by some miracle they release more on the Aussie play store and i can get my brother to get one in time. I see in the Aussie thread some one reported that the bumpers were available again...I've already got a SGP screen protector on its way... just no phone to put it on right now

Tell me about it. My cousin is on standby to buy this phone for me. Only problem would be if stock runs out again or it doesnt ship to her by the 21 december for the flight back to nz. I will uterly pissed if either of those situations occur. I already gave her the money for it
