What performance can we expect from official jelly bean? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Personally I'm not impressed by cm10 and the other custom jelly bean ROMs, I know it's Samsung's fault because they haven't released the source code and I'm starting to wonder if we should expect a big step in performance from the official jb update.
The devs will probably know the shortfall of the current custom ROMs so should be able to better answer my question.
Any smart predictions on when it might be out too?

Insult? Where, please??

I specifically started that it's Samsung's fault for not releasing the sources, it's not the developers fault. The devs have done an amazing job so far.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

Well i will agree with u you to some extent. If wr compare cm 9 with cm 10. Cm9 was revolutionary but its not the devs fault. Because JB has nothing new in it for general people like us. Just a lil more smoother experience which is less perceptible for most with a good ics experience. I would say google should make it an update rather than a whole new flavor. But its their choice its their OS. Mostly a marketing strategy to make us feel obsolete and force us to upgrade. But i am happy wih my note and its dev community. Still so much to do on it.

ICS 4.0 Sources Out

Found it on i9000 Forums.
Pretty awesome, does this help us?
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/android-building/T4XZJCZnqF8
I'll post what I posted in the other thread since this may get more traffic
could some devs explain to me what type under the hood improvements ics offers over gingerbread. specifically concerning battery life, will ics roms for the vibrant have better battery life than gb roms?
CAN'T ****ING WAIT UNTIL CM9!!! I'M GETTING MOIST JUST THINKING ABOUT IT.
Awesome news! Looking forward to seeing how ICS's benefits work out on the Vibrant, especially hardware acceleration (finally).
Where are all the devs? Thought this thread would be flooded with comments, I guess the vibrant is just too old now??

Great move by G, and sweet for all of us!! Sadly, I am only chiming in and am in no way a chef but I give it a at most a week for a lot of legitimate ICS related software starts appearing; the right track for full roms in a month or so.. Who knows what obstacles lie in 4.0.1 though...

Starting with IceCreamSandwich, the Android Open-Source Project can't be used from pure source code only, and requires additional hardware-related proprietary libraries to run, specifically for hardware graphics acceleration.
Official binaries for Nexus S, Nexus S 4G, Galaxy Nexus, and PandaBoard can be downloaded from Google's Nexus driver page, which add access to additional hardware capabilities with non-Open-Source code.
There are no official binaries for Nexus One, ADP2 or ADP1.

Ya trying to get ics on our phones will be as bad as trying to get gingerbread or have you guys forgotten about that? And xmas is far from perfect and there's no cm devs even with a vibrant...

Hold on to your horsies people, it's gonna be a long time before we see ICS on our Vibrants if at all we do. Porting ICS is much more difficult than GB I believe. And we all know how difficult GB was.
Would be nice to see this!!
I'm optimistic I know they got sdk to work I have confidence in the devs it well come by end of year

Similar in the sense that many months out with non-official 2.3 we still have buggy and feature incomplete gingerbread derivatives?
The only real upside, given that the phone stopped being supported by Samsung and T-Mobile ages ago, is that the uphill struggle with ICS will probably be no worse than it was with GB.
dont forget our non FFC phones, are gonna make face unlock obsolete... and ones with FFC probably too low resolution and speed...
But doesn't the fact that cyanogenmod officially supports the vibrant mean that when cm9 hits, that all non-nexus devices aren't too far behind? Isn't that the point of "officially" supporting a device?

Agreed! I'm sure CM7 would have had been fully functional by now if Hash or another Dev had decided to finish it. Here's another scary thought, I read that Google is supposed to be releasing Jelly Bean (Android 5.0) in the second quarter of this year. If this is true, there would be a new OS before even a hand full of devices are even running ICS.
Yep, it would be finished, and we all would be begging for him to start to work on a ICS build.
CM7 is nice, but CM9 is nicer
Also, I'm starting to think Hash is Legion, for he is many (jk)

If that were to really happen I have a feeling there would be a lot of unhappy Galaxy Nexus owners...
^^I agree. There was so much hype surrounding the 4.0 OS that it seems both doubtful and (if true) disappointing that Google would be too shortsighted/trigger-happy, to actually let the OS mature a bit first, before pumping out another release. I've owned Android devices for better or worse, since the OG Droid, and I have to say that the evolution of the platform has been staggering...but I'm at a loss as to how the OS could really get SIGNIFICANTLY better than this. It's just my opinion, but I think 4.x is close to perfect...in the past, I could see clearly, how Eclair, Froyo, or GB could be improved, but ICS really has it all. I just think it would be terribly irresponsible of both Google and manufacturers, to support the release of a new OS this soon...

From what I read, the biggest new features are supposed to be Android's own version of NFC and compatibility with netbooks, laptops, desktops..... I agree it is too early for another release, but perhaps the extra features that are supposed to be included are too significant to just be an update to say 4.05.

[Q] Captivate jelly bean

Jelly bean has been made official and I'm here wondering if there's any devs out there planning on porting to cappy... or is everyone working on S3 ROMS?
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
I guess once it is on Nexus S - it will be ported by crafty ROM devs.
I hope so
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
No need to hope. This is xda. I have every confidence that it will be ported!
Also these amazing people on XDA are keeping my Cappy blazing fast and I will support them with at least a $10 donation. There work is allowing me to wait to upgrade for when the next nexus phone comes out.

I'd say don't upgrade until phone breaks. It will be just another Android, you can do the same things on Cappy today. I got S3 - I'm telling you.
Your right I know they will.. they already seem to be porting it to nexus S in sure they can port over to cappy
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
They are trying to port it to cappy now. I found a link to an irc channel that has a jelly bean test rom for the cappy. I couldn't figure out what was going on on the page I'm a real noob at this stuff. It was like a chat room. I was told it was under dev so I would have to wait :-( So its definitely being worked on. Hopefully soon I can feed my flash addiction
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
I'm sure somebody will make a port. That is one great thing about the Captivate is that it is pretty well supported. Helps that it is a galaxy s. I intend to use mine until it breaks or can't run the latest software.
Jelly bean
I will definitely wait eagerly for a CyanogenMod build of android 4.1.
The Samsung Captivate is now not only officially supported by AOKP, but the Captivate work in the AOKP effort is done by the creator of the ROM, roman, and not just some random volunteer developer.
Work on a Jelly Bean based AOKP will begin once the official Jelly Bean source is released.
I thought all the galaxy s work was maintained by sixstringsg and Stephen.k.spear. I could be wrong though.

I really miss my Captivate when I visit this section of the forum. It really was a burly piece of hardware and I now keep it around to flash with the newest ROMs to check them out. Can't wait to see what the Devs come up with in regards of JB.
I find it pretty remarkable that the devs here keep up the porting for a phone that's 2+ years old, considering all the new devices out today. But I'm fully convinced that it'll be ported.
I wish my cappy was still working (suffered from the Encryption Unsuccessful issue) I kinda miss using it sometimes when I see it sitting on my desk. If it was working I would love to test out some JB roms for it.
Can't wait! Getting ICS on my phone was such a big improvement in smoothness and speed and knowing JB is focused on just that makes me want it now!!
Looking forward to install JB on my phone once it is available.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
Since Jelly Bean is a minor update of ICS, i think will be several roms for cappy.
AOSP officailll!
We’re releasing Android 4.1 in AOSP today.
The name of the tagged release is android-4.1.1_r1.
The name of the development branch is jb-dev.
We recommend that you create new clients, even if you’re working in the master branch. It’ll make your clients smaller and faster to sync.
Proprietary binaries are available for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Nexus S and Xoom will follow.

Software wise, that's mostly true. Hardware wise, not so much. I wouldn't upgrade for the next version of android, but I do upgrade for better camera's, more application memory, faster processor, nfc, better display, etc.

VillainROM?

Interested in whether anyone would like to see VillainROM come to the Note? We are a fairly well known development team, if you had/have an SGS2 or a HTC Hero then you will have definitely heard of us
For those of you that don't; VillainROM is a custom ROM which remains close to stock but heavily optimized for performance and stability. We make no changes to the aesthetics of the ROM as everyone is different and they should have free choice over how their device looks. With the recent release of the JellyBean source we are turning our attention to AOSP based ROMs and are commencing work on VillainMod. This will be like CM but with all of the options they used to include and more, we want you to have complete control over the look and feel of your device.
Please let me know below if anyone is interested, if not I'll stick to app development
Hell yeah! ;-)

I've always been wondering if/when VillainROM (actually its a MOD, isn't it) would come to the NOTE?
It did take us a long while to get AOSP ROMs, so I was expecting it for a long time.
Now we've got fairly-stable CM9/AOKP/Paranoid... so not sure how great it would be.
...scratch that, I though you meant ICS, Jelly Bean would be perfect!
Thanks for any effort, its pretty much "official" that the NOTE won't get 4.1 from Samsung, so you guys will definitely fill a gaping hole.

Well I guess you'll be out of luck for all new phones in that case. I'm not even sure there are drivers for ICS available for the APQ8064. Qualcomm had it running on their reference platform quite a while ago, but all devices with an APQ8064 were brought to market with Jelly Bean.

So because you've got apps that you can't be bothered replacing, that aren't maintained any more because the devs can't be bothered... you expect sony to release a totally different OS for their phone? Or, how about you just find replacement apps, or pester the lazy devs into updating. This is totally not an issue from Sony,.,,, just lazy app devs.

I did say I only wished for it. Never demanded or at the very least ask for it so no biggie with that. Also you can't bother any dev who decided to discontinue support for their apps so yeah pretty much either getting newer alternatives or live without those apps. Some of the noteable apps I was saying was the chainfire 3d and flash player. So good luck bothering adobe for asking to continue flash for jellybean and about chainfire? There are hundreds of android users who asked him to make chainfire 3d work for ICS and above but he said it's just too hard or worse not possible and most of all you can't say they're lazy devs.
