I've been having a problem with my Razr I which was purchased around the 11th October from Handtec, and I'm just trying to work out whether this was a faulty handset or whether it's common for the device, or affects a certain batch.
The issue is high levels of hiss / interference when a speaker is connected to 3.5mm jack while audio is not playing. Hard to describe the sound as it changes, however it's somewhere between hiss, ground loop and EM interference.
There's also an unpleasant thump when audio output turns on (i.e. just prior to playing audio) or off (a few moments after the audio output is stopped).
The hiss/interference noise reduces significantly immediately before and after playing audio i.e. it seems to go down to an acceptable level once the audio chip is taken out of 'sleep' mode and made active. I can only assume that this is because a noise cancellation circuit is removing the interference once the audio chip is activated, but that while it's inactive the unwanted signal is making its way down the cable connected to the 3.5mm jack.
This happens regardless of whether the device is connected to wall socket - and I've tested with a battery powered speaker - so this isn't a ground loop issue as far as I know. It is most noticeable when connected to an external speaker that's turned up to a decent volume, but is also audible through headphones. Please note that different headphones will show the issue to a different extent, as the impedance of headphones can vary quite widely. Through small earphones, the sound isn't too offensive, but through an external speaker or decent headphones it's completely unacceptable.
I tried temporarily disabling the MusicFX app and doing a factory reset – no luck with either unfortunately.
There is a report on gsmarena from someone who noticed the hiss. They got a replacement and there was no hiss on the replacement handset.
The thing that's confusing me is that this seems like two separate issues - though I may well be wrong.
1) poor EM shielding and/or cancellation circuitry inactive when audio is not playing and
2) no soft-start / soft-stop when capacitor(s) on the audio chip is charged/discharged and/or DC offset on the signal coming from the audio chip.
The phone's in the box ready to be posted back to Handtec, but just wanted to try and understand whether anyone else has experienced this issue? Just to note that although I haven't been through the returns process just yet, support from both Motorola and especially Handtec so far has been great.

that was me. the replacement was much better. still not upto gnex audio via headphones standard but the positives elsewhere on the phone (vs the gnex) mean i can live with the slight drop in audio quality.
Ah ok that's promising cheers. As you've mentioned in that thread, it's only really a problem when music's not playing and when the audio chip is activated/deactivated. No realm qualms with the quality of the audio chip itself as i wouldn't expect a studio grade dac in a phone, just the interference / lack of soft-start that was the dealbreaker. Fingers crossed my replacement will be from a different batch

I'm having exactly the same problem with my XT890 - bought from Amazon round 10th Oct., device build date is 22 Sept.

In my case the hiss is present only in sleep mode with no music on. I can hear silent thud roughly 3 secs after pressing power button to enter the sleep mode followed by the annoying hiss (only on left ear though). It's not loud at all, in fact it's barely noticeable during the day. It only drives you insane if even subconsciously.

I think this is where the problem lies. First I thought its down to frequency response or even impedance. I think its due to different 3.5mm jack layout. I have no problem what so ever on my Klipsch S4A (10-19khz, 18ohm, 4 rings jack) but on my Koss PRO 4AAT (10-25khz, 250ohm, regular 3ring jack) its simply unbearable.
Shall I try to send it back to Amazon in hope the new piece will be flawless?

i 'think' i had the same hiss you are talking about on my first device. it was certainly noticeable as i mentioned before and unnacceptable i have no hiss on my replacement unit.
3 secs after any music has come to a stop, it sounds as if the internal amp (?) 'clicks' off. that 'click' is/was present on both devices i had but as that does not interfere with and music playing, i don't see that as a problem.
who knows if we are all talking about the same 'hiss' or not

I had exactly the same problem on first device but on replacement that hiss gone but not all together but 10x better . I have got 64gb micro sd card full of music and I love chillout stuff where any extra noises spoils listening pleasure . Btw my device was prom phones 4 u
Replacement received. Hiss/EM interference and the pop still there :crying:
ooo that is bad luck. as you got both from handtec, i can only assume they had a faulty batch that moto fixed on newer builds.

Well, you first thought it could be the impedance but you forgot it or what? It's quite common problem that not all the amplifiers like all headphones. Can happen with hifi equipments too, but mostly mobile devices just don't have good enough output for high impedance headphones. Low impedance headphones are a bit more battery friendly.
I think people just looks silly walking around with big-ass-headphones. About the same as using tablets as cameras.
Anyway, my phone does have slight hissing noise with 18 ohm headphones, but I can live with it.
Sure I think this is probably not an issue for a lot of people, as I want to be able to output to speakers rather than just listen on earphones.
Agree big headphones look silly, I'd only wear them on long train journey's not strolling around
If it doesn't affect the way you use the phone that's fine, and for those people I don't think it should influence their buying decision. The gsmarena review calls out aux audio quality as an issue though and measures it in comparison to other phones, and it doesn't fare so well. It'd be interesting to know whether the situation's improved in later revisions.
If the interference and pop happened with other devices I'd understand it, but I've had no issues with various other mp3 players, smartphones and tablets feeding the same headphones and speaker systems.
Oh well, hopefully be able to buy in a month or so when I'm reassured they've fixed it.

Yep, phones of friends don't have the same issue. It hasn't been a problem with some models of HTC, iPhone and Samsung that I've tried with the same speaker systems. I imagine there are plenty of older Motorola handsets that don't have the same issue too so it's nothing against them.
Posted this question on Motorola customer care, but recived a useless anwser. I don't know phone internals, but my guess is problem lies in incorects volume regullation. Just like with with connection of PC with amplifier, if you would turn your amplifier to maximum volume and try to regulate volume only with PC volume controll, you would get similar noise.

So, I went out and bought a Nook Color on Friday. I bought it for the Android hacking fun and doubt that I'll ever use it for its B&N "intended purpose". With that being said, I've noted that there is a hiss / static in the headphones any time the audio is enabled. There appears to be some self-muting going on on the device itself almost as if it is completely disabling the bias to the audio output transistors after some seconds wherein the hiss goes away but, any time there is active sound going on, the hiss and associated noise (likely RFI getting into poorly designed/shielded audio circuitry) is very clearly and annoyingly there.
I'm using very good headphones (Bose QC-3's) which sound wonderful on everything else I plug them into including my Droid and Milestone phones.
Has anyone else noted this very annoying audio issue on the NC? If I don't figure out some way to get rid of it, it's going to put a serious damper on using the NC to watch videos when I fly. (LONG trans-oceanic flights!)
I noticed a slight static noise from the built in speaker on my NC. I've not listened that much with headphones - and it was in a noisy environment.

Usually portable audio front ends include a mute circuit to suppress the pop when the power for the amp turns on and off to save power. But that's besides the point...
My ATH-M50s give a lot of hiss when plugged into the NC, and at 38 ohms are somewhat less sensitive than most cheapie headphones that these amps are usually designed to. When I get a chance I'll try some higher impedance phones.

Might be worth taking your headphones into a B&N store and trying another NC out to confirm its not just an issue with your unit.
Have the same issue with the NC and bose QC3 head phones. Plugged in a cheap pair of ear buds from the airlines and no hiss.
The amp is definitely noisy-- the worst I've heard since my 1st Gen iPhone. I guess they had to skimp somewhere.
Yes, pretty hissy sound. I can live with it, I think, but it's bit disappointing.
Ditto. The hiss using my Ultimate Ears makes the Nook Color unusable for audio or video in a quiet or normal environment.
It might work on a plane where the ambient noise is so high.

A reader likes to read in a quiet environment and therefore when they do decided they want to use the audio on their nook it is for music at a lower volume in a quiet setting. So this static / auto shutoff problem is blaringly obvious.
Any chance this will/could be fixed with an update?
If not then the audio feature will be useless for me

Also... the static only gets worse (louder) as you up the volume. So listening to the music at a higher volume doesnt mask the static it only makes it worse
I have the same noisy audio. I am very serious about my audio equipment, but I don't put the NC in that category. Yeah, it would be nice if it sounded great, but the hiss would not bother me for video & I prefer to listen to a quality MP3 player if I listen to music. I would actually rather make adjustments to a dedicated player, while reading, than use my ereader to change screens & make adjustments. The other factor is the impact on the battery life. I guess maybe not a big deal on the NC?, but surely with an eInk reader. I hope you can find a way to live happily with yours.

Ditto for me too. Hiss makes Pandora unusable when using my ultimate ears. I'm definitely disappointed, and a little less eager for flash support now.

I think there might just be inconsistency in the NCs, neither mine nor my brothers have this audio hissing problem, or the problems with the bezel/frame, or any of the other problems the have come up on the forums. Maybe they are being built at multiple factories and some just suck? or maybe they just don't do any quality control? Who knows, I would check out the NCs with other headphones (although it sounds like you use these headphones all the time, so it's unlikely that they are the problem) and your headphones with other NCs.
OMG... the nook color sucks at playing music when using the Panasonic RP-HC700 Noise Cancelling headphones. The static is almost unbearable. I posted a recording of it on youtube under the user name MilkManMOM. (I can't post links and be helpful yet) Grrrr...I'm angry now at B&N.
No audio hiss from headphones on mine. If yours does, it's defective. It's also still under warranty. Stop just complaining to us about it and have B&N fix it.

Try a different set of headphones. My Bose IE2s are fine, but my Senhiessers have a lot of hiss, especially when I use an inline amp.
My quick test leads me to belive that earbuds meant for mp3 players work fine, but head phones have issues. This might be an impedence issue.

Its either a Impedance issue or Frequency issue. When using my good Sony Headphones which are Frequency Response : 5-24,000Hz I get a Ton of Hiss, but when I'm using my Crappy Work Speakers which are Dell 215, which has a Frequency Response of 100 - 20000 Hz I get No hiss at all.
I have not tried the Official Nook head phones but they are Frequency response: 20 Hz-18,000 Hz
My guess is that our Head phones are just too good for the Nook and we are hearing the Hiss in the Higher Frequency Range that "Normal" Headphones often can't reproduce. I have had the same issue with cheaper MP3 players you end up hearing the electronics in the device working. Good MP3 players and other media device normally have this sound filtered out or have things shielded in such a way that it minimized the effect.

Ummm, no. First, anything above 20kHz is inaudible. Second, if you do have extraordinarily rare "miracle ears" and can hear slightly above the normal range, nothing above 20kHz would sound like a hiss... it would be an incredibly high-pitched whistle. Try playing around with a tone generator and see for yourself what extreme high-frequency sounds are like.
Oh, and I assure you that your Sony headphones cannot produce 5Hz and 24kHz tones, no matter what their marketing department claims.

Mentioned this on a couple of other threads, but I feel it needs a dedicated one.
Firstly, the output from the headphone jack to the line in on my car is poor, the level is so low i'm cranking it up to 20 just to get a decent listenable volume level, my previous phones (Atrix, Nokia N900) didn't require this.
Secondly, if I use my car charger with the phone and try and use the line in, there is massive interference that is louder than the output its self making it impossible to listen to music. Again another issue not present on my previous phones using the same charger.
I am going to attempt to make a recording of the noise, and I'll upload this later.
Can a few other people test this out and see if you get the same result please?

I have noticed low headphone output also. I use a ground loop filter so I haven't noticed too much white noise but having to turn up the volume louder than normal to make up for the low output makes it worse. I only hear it in-between songs.
Hmm I'll try and find a ground loop isolator and see if that makes any improvement.
Just don't understand why it is such an issue on the Nexus 4.
The noise for me is louder than the audio that is being output rendering it useless. Going to upgrade my car with bluetooth at some point so that will solve all the problems.
This phone has the absolute worst headphone output. It is SO low. Plugging the device into my car through an auxiliary port is horrible. I can't believe Samsung makes the headphone output so incredibly low on a flagship device. How can they get away with this? It's almost half of the iPhone 5S?
Care to explain a little more in detail? Why 'slow'? Do you mean the sound quality coming through the headphone jack of the headphone jack itself?
I am simply referring to the fact that when you plug in a pair of headphones the output volume is extremely low, compared to the HTC M9, or iPhone. I have tried several headphones and even plugged a pair into a demo unit at best buy. Turn up the volume all the way and it's simply not loud enough. Plug the same pair of headphones into an iPhone or HTC One M9 and the volume output is much louder. I do not understand how Samsung can get away with making the volume so loud. Defeats the purpose of having the phone play music.
Now I have used many many Galaxy smartphones, and while I have complained of this issue before, the S6 by far as the absolute lowest volume. Wouldn't be an issue if a volume mod could be flashed. But we need the boot loader unlocked first.
That's weird, maybe since it's a demo unit, my gs6 gets uncomfortably loud and it's almost on pair with my ipad.

To each their own with sound, I guess. It was enough for me to return the phone.
So this can't just be bothering me.
Once you plug it in, make sure to turn the volume up on the phone. By default, the headphone jack is set very low so you dont blow the external speakers.
Also, try a headset and see if its still low for you. If it is, then its a bad port... if it isnt, then something is up with your aux port or car unit.

I have tried many headphones. It gets loud, but nothing like the iPhone. Very difficult to hear your music in the gym. Samsung should not make the headphone volume this low. It's beyond frustrating for us audiophiles. FWIW, I don't think my phone is defective, I just think its me. Either way, I returned it.

I can understand where you're coming from. I was quite frustrated at first until I started playing with the equalizer and adapt sound. Now it's much better. I've plugged my headphones into the iPhone and while it does get louder it also gets more distoreted.
Have you gone into settings / sounds / sound quality and effects.
The tinkered around with the SoundAlive+ & Tube Amp? Also try using adapt sound to really tailor your sound.
Maybe one of those needs to be enabled to increase the output of the volume, not sure..
There's a post in general secton to increase the volume of the phone. It requires root tbough so be aware.

Dude seriously,, Thank you. I thought i have started having issues with my hearing. The output is so low that when in the subway, there is no way for me to hear my music. Only when i rotate the earpeace in an unusuall position, i am able to hear what i am actually listening to. The worst thing is that it seems to be recognized by u and me only... I don't know what to do and i for sure don't want an iphone..
Yep, ridiculously low volume output from the headphone jack. Compared to an LG G4 on the same speaker set to the same volume level, the S6 output is almost inaudible over background noise in the kitchen. Only way to get any usably loud audio from it is Bluetooth, which has its own set of problems with this phone.
Yes the sound from ear phones is too low. With my previous I9070 my ears used to bleed at 3 with Poweramp but now ven with the Volume turned upto 5 I can barely hear them..!

Well, i had same problem but when i did the adapt sound tune, i did it at home without surrounding noises and heard all the beeps.. I redid it while on the train and heard aboit 30 % of the beeps and now i have a loud volume also disablwd the effects..
My headphones were also not working well. I thought to try some other brands. I searched alot but all were very expensive. Then my gym trainer suggested me to look for SoundMAGIC. I got affordable audiophile headphones online at exclussive offer. The sound is fantastic. I am very happy with it now.

Any ideas?? It's Exynos (8GB/512GB) version. Atmos doesn't affect anything. All audio sources of the same track produce it.
It sounds horrendous when its doing it. I thought my headphones were broken but it does it on speaker too.

I'm having the same issue with the US unlocked snapdragon version.
I spent an hour with Samsung Support going through issues. Interestingly the audio through the speaker in diagnostic mode didn't show any issues but probably due to different frequencies and sound profile to the songs that are causing the issue. Safe mode made no difference and neither did a factory reset. They said I could do a handset swap but no current stock of the blue. Ended up finding a local store with a 512GB blue in stock so drove over there, purchased it, same issues so instantly returned that handset. I also saw this thread about the S9 Plus where people have been describing similar issues (https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9-plus/help/galaxy-s9-plus-sound-problem-t3774829)... maybe I've made a poor decision ditching iPhone!?
Is this the sort of thing using something like Viper4Android would fix?
Same issue. 128G Verizon. I had this issue on a call once(may have been the signal) but then the audio did the same thing a couple times. The behavior is that of a track where the track had been recorded with the signal too strong or the gain too high(same thing really). Turning the volume down only makes it sound like a quiter distorted signal. 1 thing i noticed was, when using smart switch my custom "EQ" setting was transferred over. I changed it but that didn't change anything.

You mean like clipping ?
I wonder if a fresh install will help.

For start - turn off all the eq settings (if you have some turned on) in sound menu - dolby, adaptive sound and so on.
If it's software problem rooting and moding the phone would help, if it's hardware issue maybe it can mitigate it, but that's beside the point to have expensive device with not working sound out of the box.
I tried the audio settings but soundalive is always on. I force closed it whilst listening but no real change. Once you start googling it you realise there's a fair few Samsung's over the years that also do it including S9/+, S8 and so on. Maybe I shouldn't have left iPhone. Audio is very important to me as I'm always listening. Back in the day Exynos Samsung's were the best due to the Wolfson DAC. Sadly I'm disappointed and considering backtracking on the purchase. What would be better though, an LG? A Sony? Or am I then just settling for something less.

LG V series got awesome DAC. Did you tried a player like powermap (there is a free trial) that can output at high resolution directly from the DAC, ignoring the OS? It produces vastly superior sound on my exynos s7e. Don't forget to sign up for the beta tho, a lot of improvements in the latest in sound/UI design. The new exynos 9810 still uses wolfson/circus logics DAC that is praised everywhere (especially hifi forums and ofc for a phone). Maybe you just don't like the sound balance of it, as it's quite neutral. That is personal preference though, not negative point - some like neutral, others warmer and so on.

yeah but it's not constant. It only happens sometimes. To me the behavior is exactly like when you record something at max volume and then play it back and it sounds like it's blowing your speakers apart. Mine sounds great for the most part and this only happens sometimes.

i remember having this problem in the samsung S3 a long time ago ...this can only be fixed with a samsung update...
Same problems intermittently on exynos.
Fingers crossed. Would point to software if experienced by S845 and Exynos.

Is this happening with wired and bluetooth? I haven't had this issue with mine, but my bluetooth devices support separate audio control, so that the phone can be turned all the way up, but my bluetooth devices can then control their own volume further.
I'm getting some intermittent issues with speaker output where the bottom speaker seems to lower in volume and bass after some minutes of use. Overall the speakers fare well for upbeat music but very poorly for piano tracks where they add some rattle and crackling (same goes for some narration or podcasts). Some days I don't notice this at all but it might be due to multiple audio apps running or how the lower speaker is normalizing the bass. Also, just a few minutes ago my speakers just stopped working for media playback, but the volume rocker still made sounds through the speaker. I was using headphones and playing music for the video editor for super slow motion videos before this happened. The only way out was to restart the phone. I tried replicating it but it didn't happen again.

Most likely a software issue (same with the cracking sound) and will be fixed (hopefully) in a update or atleast in P.
I have no such issues with my Exynos Note 9. I listen to music a lot with headphones and it sounds fantastic quite honestly. I actually ditched my LG G7 becuase I didn't hear too much benefits with the sound to justify keeping it just for music. I actually kind of prefer the output from the Note 9 generally. The G7 might have had a tad more spacious sound but also a bit more "muffled" at the same time. A little bit more emphasis in highs in the Note which I prefer.

Hello! I noticed the bottom speaker sounds a bit louder than the top one, specially with higher frequencies. Is this specific to my unit or is this due do a difference between the speakers in this phone? Anyone can relate?

Be aware that stereo signals might affect your perception of them. Try turning on mono audio in accessibility settings.
As far as physical differences go, they are indeed different in size. You can see it here:

After 2 weeks of owning this phone, I just noticed it now. Bottom speaker does sound louder than a top speaker. So disappointed to find out that both speakers aren't equal I bought this phone mainly for front stereo speakers.
I think Top speaker is an earphone doubling as speaker. Bottom speaker is a dedicated speaker.
I noticed something strange. After turned off the phone for a few minutes and then turn it back on, now both speakers sound balanced just like when i just got the phone and had not noticed this issue until now. Please try turning off the phone, not restart.

I hope Asus releases updates that allows user to adjust the balance of stereo. I think it's also the stereo frequencies in each content. some music, video, and games are noticeably louder on bottom speaker, and some are louder on top speaker.
I just turn on mono audio when the speakers are in use. The stereo separation doesn't work well enough for me, and it just sounds fuller.
I'm also aware that the phone has 2 vibration motors, but I noticed the vibration is much stronger at the bottom, anyone noticed this?

I can definitely relate to this. But overall, I'm very satisfied with the quality of the speakers.
Do y'all have your bottom speaker blown out or distorted?
guys Ive owned several stereo phones before and almost all of them sound differently, you just need to turn on Mono audio as other's have mentioned too.
this phone has great speakers, reminds me of my HTC 820 boomsound speaker which were pretty loud back in the day, but this is loud and clear!

@Mike845 Thanks for posting this issue as I am also facing the same issue. I am skeptical as this being a hardware issue because I saw jerryrigeverything's video on YouTube and top speaker is indeed smaller than the bottom one.
I want to know that are the top bottom speaker should be of same intensity or is there a problem with my unit. Also if buttom speakers are loud than top one and there is no issue then I am very angry with Asus as one of the reason for buying this phone was dual front firing stereo speakers.

Yes at high volume bottom speaker does sound distorted.
Tweak for balancing speaker audio
Okay, first of all switch off and reboot (not restart) your phone.
Then go to AudioWizard, switch to normal mode if not already then don't exceed the volume beyond 10 notch. Now check, speakers would be balanced and clear.
It becomes unbalanced only after 10 notches where only bottom speakers volume gets increased and not top. Also beyond 10 there could be distortion in bottom speaker.

I don't know how YouTubers are saying that Rog has got the best display ever, paid reviews probably. These YouTubers are taking people for granted.
Asus's image processing is just ****, black crush, red tint and what not.
I don't know why I went with this when OnePlus 7 pro was equally priced. Regretting my decision.
