[Q]Software to view all deleted items during history of your phone? - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have already rooted my phone, and installed Titanium Backup from the Android Market, and removed all the apps that I don't use, such as
TImescape, Email, Geotags, etc... and managed to free a lot of memory from both the system ROM and internal memory.
There's many software apps out there like Root Explorer, Rom Toolbox, etc.. that allow you to view all the items in
the internal system, but is there software anywhere where you can install on one's rooted phone, and view all deleted items (photos,
music files, video clips, etc.) during the entire history of the phone since you started using it?
I know when you delete items on your computer, they are sent to a part of the system where it can be recovered with the
right tools.
Thanks all,
and Happy Halloween :fingers-crossed:
Ken

I don't know about such an application.

If I am not wrong, the files on the sdcard that you delete are deleted forever. Like Shift+Del in Windows; you can't see them again. The files in the other directories, AFAIK, are deleted in a similar way (where data is not stored). In conclusion, no, you cannot view deleted files.

is it true? but how if we accidentally reformat sd in quick format mode? is data still recoverable?
Sent from my E15i using xda premium

Its recoverable..
I too formatted my sd by mistake.
But then i recovered the lost data using stellar pheonix data recovery using my PC

Its recoverable as long as the deleted files haven't been overwritten. When you delete a file it doesn't actually get deleted, the memory block just switches from 1 (in use) to 0 (not in use). When you save a file, the system looks for memory blocks that are not in use and overwrites them. Thus as long as you haven't saved anything or used the memory it should be recoverable.
There's an app called 'undelete' or something like that on the Market that will recover deleted files.

Can't remove LOST.DIR folder

Since the first time I flashed my phone, I've always had this folder named "lost.dir" which I can't seem to get rid of even after deleting it, it still reappears after I reboot the phone. Any help on how to make it disappear.

This folder is generated by default. This will contain any corrupted files that you may have on Internal and external SD cards. This should be quite harmless. It usually gets created when you reboot your phone or you remove the phone from USB storage mode.
Sorry for not answering the question to the point. But you can safely ignore it.
As the above poster said ,it is always there it cannot be deleted, but you can and should delete any files on however.
If the files keep appering after a reboot that means you may have problems with your filesystem, the most common cause of files inside that folder is when you remove or don't unmount the cards before unplugin them.
When the phone boots it checks the file system, if it finds any corrupted file they get moved to that folder, thin of it as Chkdsk for windows.
Thank u both. I've learnt that today. Cheers

i found a program that restores my media files, its running atm stellar photo, media and video recovery. so i decided to buy it.
but i am more intrested in my data files (save games, configuration files for luchners, and other configuration files for stuff....)
now its just an experiment, i was thinking to mount the phone in linux (there are many ways to achive it in linux) and try to restore data from there since there is no option to restore data of ext partions in windows...
I have made it a habit of keeping weekly backups from rom manager. Just the thought of what your going through and the amount of pain that comes with it makes me tremble. I royally f'd up my phone 5 times already and I just restore my backup and back to normal without the headaches.
Good luck with your recovery mission.
You can use PhotoRec and/or TestDisk from your Linux machine.
This happened to me once before, but luckily I am taking weekly backups of internal and external SD to a portable HDD.

Well I dont mind loosing a weeks game data, since I am not playing much games these days. But if you want to backup those folders you can use the app 'Titanium Media Sync' to automatically backup selected folders to your dropbox account.

Install and uninstall apps will cause residue files in system memory?

If we install/uninstall any apps, will the uninstall really clean/delete all the files from the system memory? For PC software sometimes it leaves something in the registry key or system directory.
Will Android has the same issue?

althou android doesnt have a registry.. i have seen that some apps leave their custom folders and files in the usb storage... which i have to find and delete manually.. mainly games and other apps that download data after installation
I'm also interested to know about this too...with Windows I'm pretty careful with what to install as I don't like too many un/installs...curious to know how Android handles many un/installs...

Based on my experience there are many leftovers even after un-install. One suggestion is to use the 'Clear Data' button before uninstalling an app. However, even after this there will be leftovers esp in the sdcard\Android folder.
Left over under Android folder still manageable, my worry is it left something in the restricted folder where we have no access unless we root. Is matter of time run out of internal memory until factory rest.

it depend on what kinda that you use. some apps will left empty folders when you uninstall it.
same here
I actually have the same worry with my phone since I keep on trying different apps.. I just "clean data" and "clean cache" for the app before I uninstall it and I dont have problems with that..
The tool that I use is SDmaid. It helps me in identifying leftover folders and app debries. You can automatically delete them using the app.
Worked fine for me.

I tried SD Maid, it did help to free out at least 200+Mb of internal memory. Cool..

Most of the time, the biggest "trash" SD maid cleans up is the Gallery thumbnails..
Soooo when you startup your gallery app again, it regenerates the thumbnails so youre back to square one.. LOL
I am referring to internal memory, it freed up about 200+MB from program cache. Correct, the thumb view file (another 200+MB) from gallery reside at sd card will rebuild after delete.
Funny thing is wipe cache at CWM won't free up the internal memory.

I've noticed on ics that games and some apps leave folders on the usb storage. Gb used to remove them..

For a specific case...
phone had installed the free version of AutomateIt.
Uninstalled it by: "clear cache", "clear data", force stop", and then "uninstall". Then rebooted phone.
A bit later searching the storage noticed a "AutomateIt" folder in Device Storage.
The AutomateIt folder contains a subfolder "Backups", which contains 3 files (all .AiR files). (two are 1kb, one is 0kb) .
Is it safe to manually delete these files and folders?
Are there any apps similar to SDmaid but for unrooted phones? (no root yet for Atrix HD, so not even an option)
Some apps leave behind files or folders no matter what you do. I just manually remove them using a file explorer.
This is my observation. Hope this helps.

In case you are still interested in this topic, here is a research paper talking about the data residue vulnerability in Android system services:

I could not post URL in the reply, but you can search the paper name and find it.

Another good reason to do a full wipe prior to installing a new ROM!

[Q] what should i delete

i inserted an image in the attachment can you please help me what should i delete ?
Heh, you can delete everything and your device will still boot and work.
This is only your user space.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
most of it will be junk, but some of them will belong to your apps, such as configuration saves, game saves, downloaded data, caches etc. so be careful deleting them.
Look through the obvious ones, if you see a folder belonging to an app you no longer use / have installed, then delete it
If the folders are empty, delete them (wont recovery much space, but will look organised )
once you've gone through them, use an app such as SD maid to remove the rest of the junk which is consuming un-necessary space and/or to find duplicates.
or format the damn thing !! (but backup your crap first lol)
u can delete what ever, if u got do any backup b4 then clockworkmod folder keep it !

[Q] Recover deleted files in system folder

I can't seem to find the same thread already opened here so I ask.
I stupidly uninstalled an app in which I had a lot of notes (forgot the notes widget was actually from the app /dumb). So, I'm asking if there is any possibility to search for deleted files, like we can on SD cards and computer drives with Recuva and similar programs, on the internal system folder? Because the app saved its notes database in datadata folder...
Please, any chance at all?
Yes there is always a chance. Try diskdigger, you can find it on google play but remeber this application require root privilages.
Thanks. Found the app myself but weirdly it doesn't allow to recover all files. Unknown to my knowledge. I would need to restore a database file (.db). The app doesn't have support for it.
I hope you can find a way to recover your lost files. I expected that app could work but I was wrong.

you should first re install that app, to see if its data is still intact in your SD card, if not you can use recovery tools from here or undelete app too. BUT First copy contents of your SD card to PC for salvaging.
