[TOOL] AT&T VS. Pre-Paid Calculator - Nexus 4 General

This tool is for those of us that are currently under an AT&T contract and thinking of purchasing the Nexus 4. Since this phone comes shipped unlocked and without a contract, we might as well consider switching carriers to maximize our savings. I put together this Excel spreadsheet to do the math automatically and figured I would share:

In my case I would break even in about 6 months after paying the ETF and then save around $70 / month. My savings per year is equal to about the cost of 3 nexus 4's..

I did this the day the Nexus 4 was announced. Since I have almost exactly a year left, I'll break even in 6-12 months, depending which prepaid plan I choose :victory:

Great work. You should put a subjective $ amount for the convenience of using an awesome phone somewhere in there

why not just put your at&t sim card inside the Nexus4, and that be the end of it.

Because he can save money in the long run by switching. If you're asking, "Why not put the ATT SIM in until the contract runs out," that's a good question.

I pay around 90 bucks a month for my GNEX with VZW....and looks like AT&T costs about 90 bucks a month as well....on a two year contract. Can we buy this phone out right from Google Play and put it on a contract with AT&T....or do we need to do the prepay plans? I'm not a fan of prepay....where I am in FLA....signal is almost NIL with Sprint....even crappier with prepaid plans. So I have VZW which has decent signal, never had AT&T but I'm quite sure they are big enough in the game to have good signal here in Central Florida.
Thing is... I don't want a prepaid plan. I want the two year contract, it not a burdon to me. I just am not sure how to do it by purchasing it through Google Play and then secondly signing up for AT&T (TMO is not an option either....crazy poor signal)

Prepaid plans for the major networks use the same cell towers and infrastructure as contract plans do. There's no signal/service difference.
You CAN buy the N4 and bring it to AT&T or T-Mobile and get a contract plan, but then you'll be paying far more than what you need. Contract pricing factors in the fact that you got a heavily subsidized handset when you sign up (kind of like slowly paying back the carrier for the share that they paid for it). Since you're bringing your own, they never spent a dime to subsidize your phone, and thus you'd be paying for something you didn't get.

If you already have a cell phone with ATT. Just remove the sim card from the phone and then place it in your new phone.
-Done. Just keep paying your bill. ATT, much like Honey badger. Don't care. I currently have 5 devices I switch the sim around them depending on the color of my shirt for the day.

I've got a T-Mobile sim in the mail right now. I think I'm going to stick it in my GS3 (even though I'll only get 2g) and try out the signal for the time being before my N4 gets here.

Ditching AT&T for Sprint

First post in this great forum. Anyways, have a rooted inspire (shouts out to XDA for the ROM) and I love it. The only thing is, I hate AT&T and that stupid datapro plan. I am seriously thinking about ditching this service provider and its crappy network, in its hometown of Dallas, TX no less, pay the ETF fees and move to Sprint. Their plans seem attractive and they seem to be committed to unlimited data, the one thing that is attractive. Also, that Evo 3D looks nice, indeed.
Is it wise to kick AT&T to the curb and move on?
I would say so. Although, I would not count on Sprint keeping up with the unlimited plans forever, though.

If you are gonna jump, do it... Sprint may very well not keep the unlimited 4G forever. (3G is capped at 5GB) If you live in a 4G area it's worth it IMO... At least you are grandfathered in (for at least two years or your next upgrade. If they drop the unlimited) I have them for my Mobile Broadband and I'm in a 4G area and I couldn't be happier...
Sent from my NS (no it's NOT SNS or GNS)
I'd do it. AT&T is awful. The people I know that have migrated to Sprint are extremely happy they have done as much.
Handset data is truly unlimited. Just gotta hope you're in a good coverage area. Also it is worth noting many people have experienced poor, and prolonged, data speeds for a while. Some have noticed increases in speeds while some haven't. I'm in a pretty good zone and haven't seen the crazy drop in speeds. Obviously I don't speak for the masses.
They cap mobile broadband / data cards at 5GB on 3G and unlimited on 4G. Not sure if that's what the poster above was meaning as she mentioned mobile broadband AFTER* - which many seem to get mixed up with just 'data.' Alas, that is just data cards, not actual handset data.
I agree, they do appear to be pretty committed to offering truly unlimited data for mobile devices, BUT, who knows how long that will last.

Have used Sprint in the past and have been pretty happy with them overall. I prefer GSM so I use T-Mobile but I would say Sprint is better than AT&T.

AFIAK 3G data is capped. (i looked into switching after I heard about the T-mo/AT&T merger..cuz that's where I'm going once it happens) I actually called Sprint to inquire about their $129 family plan (which after the $10 data charge comes too $149 ) and that's what their rep told me.... (i guess I got another csr that doesn't actually know anything...)
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
That $10 'premium data fee' (See the '4G fee' people were mistakenly referring to it as) provided truly unlimited data - both 3G and 4G. I'm not sure how far back those 5GB caps went, or if it were always for mobile broadband, but it's not the case now.
Now that the $10 'premium data fee' covers all Sprint 'smart phones' and not just '4G phones' that also opens up the unlimited. So you wouldn't necessarily 'need' a 4G phone, even though that was never really the case.
As per the mobile broadband / data cards, I think there was a revision lately ... but I can't be bothered to look. Maybe when I get back from my beer run I'll edit my post.
Handset data = unlimited
That's reason enough for me to be sticking with Sprint. Some of the data plans on the other carriers are straight up SAD.
There are roaming data issues that Sprint can bring up, like the Verizon 'hack' that got people just kicked right off Sprint. But that's another story.
I would go to T-mobile but thats me ive been a member for 10 years only pay $190 For my Family of 4 which includes Unlimited Data and Text and 3,000 Talk Mins. But again ive been a member for 10 years so i got some special discounts.
I just switched from tmobile to sprint, (should get my evo any-day now) I heard that they offer a credit for switching by 6/23 so i went for it. tmobile also only has EDGE in my area btw that was also a big reason for switching, and att? well where i work my buddy has 3g at his house he has EDGE, and its about 2 miles away...
I thought about switching from AT&T to Sprint. I went and got a phone with Sprint before switching, so I could try it out to see how the service was around my way. I found out that Sprint had terrible service pretty much everywhere I went. Some buddies also confirmed this. I guess it's just hit and miss depending on where you are. So I've stuck with AT&T, since their service is better for me and I have my grandfathered unlimited data plan.

UK thread - Contracts, news, information, etc.

Welcome to the UK Nexus 4 thread on XDA Developers
CONTRACT PRICE COMPARISON
As is the norm, many of you are planning on obtaining the device SIM-free and unlocked for as little as possible. You may also be considering searching for a good value-for-money SIM-only contract. Here is a handy chart to help make your decision. If you need more information on the individual contracts, check the network's website.

If you're planning on going with 3/Three for the first time, be sure to check out Quidco's deals (thanks Turbotab) and TopCashBack's deals (thanks Azza_1) for added cashback and, technically, money off.
If contracts aren't your thing you can always go for a decent giffgaff goodybag. Giffgaff uses O2's network and masts for signal so you know you'll get a decent amount of coverage.

It's what's listed on CPW. I'm not sure if these prices are increased because it's going through CPW and not directly through the network provider or if they're the prices O2 and Vodafone will be providing. However, O2 and Vodafone are the only networks currently providing information regarding contracts with the Nexus 4 included.
Giffgaff are raising their prices in a few days, now unlimited texts & data and 250 mins well be £12 a month. Still a great deal though.
You'd have to be insane to buy the N4 on one of those ridiculous contracts when it's so cheap sim free.

Very true, although there is still a £10 goodybag which is the same, only now it only has 1GB of data... (I say only, this is still ample amounts.)
The way I see it, why go contract on the N4, its like this phone is designed to be used on PAYG essentially. The network providers a really ripping the public off which their contracts, its disgusting.

Yeah, I saw something about their goodybag changes.
Some people won't have the money upfront though, tempting them into a contract, sadly. I wanted to put that into perspective in the long-term.
Yea some people I know won't pay £279 upfront because its too much. But they would get it on contract.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I suggest buying outright if you can. £279 for phone + (£12*24) for the 2 months = £567. Divide that buy 24 and you get £23.60 per month. For that you'll get 250 minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited data, and unlimited minutes to other people on giff gaff. That's assuming you pay for giff gaff every month straight away, and with the £12 goody bag. You can also subtract costs for when you go on holiday, you wont have to continue paying, and other such things.
The 3 options look good but i'm looking for a plan which includes unlimited tethering too. Seems almost impossible to find one though

3 don't charge for tethering, as far as I'm aware. I've never been charged for it, at least.
Even better, imo, is the Virgin 30 day rolling contract. £12 a month, 1200mins, unltd texts, 1GB internet. That's what I'll be using when I get my Nexus 4.

There pricing Policy states tethering only available on the "One Plan" not on the all you can eat data plan.
Problem is i don't need unlimited calls. I wish a network operator would allow us to configure our own packages instead of being stuck with the crap they offer.

I'll give it a go hopefully on a rolling month - month contract basis if there are any to see how it works. If they stop me tethering i can just jump ship
With 3 you can add all ypu can eat data to any contract for £3 per month.
So if you are not fussed about voice minutes apparently you can get the £6.90 12 month contract that gives 200mins and 5000 texts then pay a further £3 per month for all you can eat data making it £9.90 per month... that's what I plan on doing.
I am on GiffGaff at the moment and don't like the increase to £12, all I use are texts and data.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I've been on GiffGaff for over a year now, I really like the freedom and the package prices. I agree that you would be mad taking a contract for a phone that's so cheap to pick up from Google play.
Here's my deal folks:
Tesco Mobile 1 month rolling contract: £15/month for 1000 minutes/5000 texts/2GB data (all you need is 30 days notice to cancel at anytime of year)
Total cost =
-> £180 for 1 year
-> £360 for 2 years
Not bad eh?
Also Tesco Mobile offers deals down to £7.50/month.
Going for unlocked phones are always the most cost effective option in the long term!!!
Thanks for the responses, guys! I've added them to the list in my first post.

Great thread, very helpful!
More importantly which service provider offers the best speed? No point in having unlimited if its capped to 1mb download speed.
----
Add T-mobile to your list Sim free (click link to find more prices):
12months contract
300mins
5000texts
750mb
£13
1month same deal
£15.50
If T-mobile offers DCHSPA+ (or whats it called) I might settle for this contract otherwise the tesco and virgin deals seems sweet.
Just a FYI, Virgin uses O2 network. Anyone know what download speed O2 offers? and if coverage is good.

Thoughts? Family plans on this are much more expensive. If these plans take over the current selection, we're looking at a 20-40% price hike for plans of 4-5 lines.
I am not seeing a deal here looks like they are starting to get into Verizon prices without the coverage and quality

What does it means by this: "Other plans may receive prioritized bandwidth availability. Streaming video speeds may be limited to 1 Mbps"
Is that referring to existing Everything plans that soon will be throttled and not be truly Unlimited? I hope not.

It looks like the future will include Unlimited Data, but to prevent abusers, Sprint will throttle Data Streaming to 1mbps (which is still fast enough for 720p streaming), and it will be expensive. Softbank appears to charge A LOT more for unlimited data as opposed to removing it completely.
This will push me over the edge to T-Mobile for sure. They already have LTE here. Well everyone but Sprint has LTE here. Although the Network Vision is currently being deployed here and should be up in a month or two. Its funny how much I have payed Sprint for their garbage network over the years and now we will finally have LTE here and they release these plans. Yep I think this is the final straw my contract is up in October and I can leave now for $50. Actually with the new terms of service as of July 1st I can get out without paying anything.

These are just newer plans. The older plans are still in effect. I think Sprint in the long term will be much better than T-Mobile because Sprint will have the 800mhz spectrum to cover indoors. T-Mobile has nothing below the 1Ghz spectrum and their indoor coverage is pretty bad.

I'll stay grandfathered in to my current family plan. If that happens to change for any reason, I would most likely go to t-mobile as well. But I don't see that happening soon.
I have 5 lines with Sprint and use all the upgrades so having the latest and greatest is cheap. T-Mobile Jump program is kind of nice too.

You will be able to keep your current plan as ling as you like you dont have to go to the new planes if you dont want plus they are bettet because you gey 5 gigs if hotspot to tether for the same price as the 110 individual plan so that's more for your money
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Hey folks.. I made a comment on this in another post of mine. As a Sprint employee, allow me to clear things up for people:
If you have a SINGLE line with Sprint then you're more than likely on the 'Everything Data 450' plan, which costs $79.99 a month before tax. To stay at the same monthly price you should just switch to the 'Unlimited, My Way' plan which costs you $50 for unlimited talk and text, and $30 for the unlimited data. $50 + $30 = $80.. which is what the Everything Data 450 plan costs right now.
It's actually a BETTER option, because now you get unlimited calling. With the Everything Data 450 plan, you only get 450 anytime minutes. With the new plan at the SAME price you get unlimited EVERYTHING. Or, you can choose the 'My All-in' plan for $110 month and get unlimited data, text, and calling PLUS a 5GB hotspot add-on for your phone.
The price scheme is the same for 2 phones as well. The only people who are gonna end up paying MORE are the ones who have 3 or more lines on their accounts. But remember, not ALL phones will require unlimited data, and some phone may be basic phones. So the plan will be cheaper.
If you have multiple SMARTphones with Sprint and want unlimited data, here is a breakdown of what you'll be paying with the new plans:
2 phones currently on the 'Everything Data Share 1500' plan = $149.99
2 phones on the new 'Everything, My Way' plan = $150 per month but now you get unlimited calling
3 phones currently on the 'Everything Data Share 1500' plan = $179.98
3 phones on the new 'Everything, My Way' plan = $210 per month but now you get unlimited calling
4 phones currently on the 'Everything Data Share 1500' plan = $209.97
4 phones on the new 'Everything, My Way' plan = $260 per month but now you get unlimited calling
But like I said, everyone with only 1 or 2 lines of service will NOT notice price differences unless they switch to the "My All-in" plan, but that's totally up to them.
Hope this helps.
P.S. We have NOT received official word as to whether or not existing family plans will be grandfathered in. With that said, there is a possibility you'll be forced to switch. The only reason why I personally believe you'll be grandfathered in, is because Sprint would lose THOUSANDS of customers if they forced existing customers to switch and ultimately pay more. I believe these new plans will only apply to NEW Sprint customers.
Just wondering how the employer discount would work. Right now with Everything Data 1500 they take the % off from $110. With this new plan(s) would it be off the entire bill or off the cost of the line ($40 1, each or combined) or the data plan ($30 1, each or combined). People might still notice their plan go up slightly.
Correct me if I'm wrong pls. for the past 4 years I've been on employee plans so don't really ever see normal phone bills.

For my family plan it would be about $10-15 dollars cheaper since two lines (my parents) pay for data when they don't need it at all.

Only problem with that is that if they have a smart phone, data is required. $20 for 1 gb or $30 for unlimited

What about when it's time to upgrade. Will we be forced to change plans if/when we upgrade?

Ummmm I can check that, but as a Sprint employee I don't think it is. Our planogram changes go into effect on 7/19. We wouldn't roll out new rate plans until we got the new brochures for the customers, which we won't get until next Thursday.

Net10 $75 Unlimited 5GB Plan, anyone?

Loving my Nexus 5, it was so great to get to leave Verizon for a better phone, and a better price.
I've been on Straight Talk for the past month, and my time is almost up, 2.5gb is close, but I need a bit more. I want to get the new Net10 $75 plan, and evidently need a new AT&T sim card for their network.
Can I just buy the SIM I need and then select that plan when activating? Or do I HAVE to buy this $50 activation kit and then upgrade to the $75 after a month?
Been getting the run around on socials and help chat.

They used to be, now they offer $45/month for unlimited talk, text & 2.5GB of data.. After the 2.5, I believe they throttle.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Yup. I'm using between 2.75 and 4.5 data a month. I don't want the throttling.
Was looking at AIO, but it is throttled all the time, and who knows what will happen now that AT&T is buying Cricket (word is AIO is being shut down).
Anyways, Anyone have some helpful info?
It's 2.5gb of high speed speed data, then the slow you down to 2g.
My understanding is that you can just buy 0.99c sim off eBay and then activate it on any plan they have. It's a dollar risk, I'd try it before paying for an activation kit.. The apn settings are posted all over.

That's what I was hoping. The guy I talked to on the phone support was nice, but I could barely hear him (landline), and that sounds like maybe what he was saying.
Net10 has free overnight shipping on their $6.99 sim cards, or you can get them on Amazon too for .99 as a Prime AddOn.
Make sure you get one already cut for micro size.

Okay @coorsleftfield , just ordered the one I linked. I'm assuming when it gets in I activate the sim and then select a plan on the site? It was a month ago for Straight Talk but I believe they had a similar setup (drank a lot since then).

not here in nyc, they are the best. i average 30-40mbps download and 15-25mbps upload. great lte coverage here, no dropped calls. and they are cheap not because of bad service, but because they are the 4th largest provider in the us, and are trying to take away the customers from the 3 largest providers. att is terrible in nyc(but improving), so is sprint.

Yeah, that's not what I asked about though, thanks.
My wife WORKS for T-Mobile, there's a reason I'm on AT&T now and she's giving up her Employee Plan for the same. Unlimited X No Signal = Unlimited Nothing. LOL In her call center they are lucky if they can get edge 95% of the time. In a large metro area too. In the two counties I work in, Socorro and Catron Counties, there is no T-Mobile service at all unless you stay within a few miles of the freeway (I-25), and that is spotty too. I can't be out of service for a 6 hour round trip drive to some of the lands we are responsible for near Arizona.
Hell, we live less than 200 feet from I-25, and she gets 1 to 2 bars in the house, and can't make a call unless she switches to WiFi.

I have no need for this, hence why I started the thread about this specific plan with Net10.
I've seen the other threads with what's available and what folks think about them.
Sorry, that sounded rude, I just re read it. I apologize for that, wasn't my objective.
I was with T-Mobile for years under my wife's plan, I wish them nothing but luck and love how they are changing the industry, but until their network expands and gets reliable, I can't us them here in New Mexico.

lol, i just checked out the part of new mexico that youre in, now it makes sense. i wouldnt consider anywhere near there a large population center where you work, probably not where you live either. yea, tmobile doesnt have good coverage out there, near the middle of no where.. my bad. but near actual large population areas, tmobile is starting to earn its name

Verizon N6 or spend more on GooglePlay N6

I have an upgrade available on my line(unlimited data VZW) and currently have the S4 and would like to go back to a nexus (previously had a Galaxy nexus and loved its openness) Im thinking about transferring the upgrade to my moms line(shared family data plan) and getting the N6 at $249 and then giving her my S4 so she has a better phone then what she has(cheap cheap smart phone). Are there any downside to the Verizon version of the N6? Its quite a bit cheaper then the Google play version so im really leaning towards that. After we buy the N6 on her line i would just switch the sim cards in our phone right? So she'd have the S4 and id have the N6.

Verizon doesn't offer the 64gb version. Nor white so far.
I have the unlimited plan to and just FYI you're not going to get a free upgrade to a nexus or any other phone and be able to retain your unlimited plan. The only way to retain your unlimited is to pay for the phone outright whether it's from Verizon or Google it really doesn't matter.
Sent from my Nexus 6
lol, by buying from verizon with a "discount", and extending your contract, you are actually paying more than buying it in full, and going with a non contract plan(not verizon for sure).
Well when some other provider can come out here and get me high speed access with 50-60 gigs a month without charging me more than $70 I'm on board.

Does verizon not allow you to transfer upgrades anymore? Im not doing any switching or anything but just giving another line on our plan the discount/upgrade my line is never going to use. then after the whole deal is done and the non unlimited plan has signed a new contract and has a new n6 on it i cant just switch our sim cards and give my mom(the non unlimited line) my s4 and take her new n6??
And ya ill never leave Verizon unless t mobile picks up their speed in my area. Verizon is the only carrier that actually works all over town and has 40mbs+ down almost anywhere if you have at least 3 bars

no such thing, lol. imagine much? im in nyc right now, and id say that in nyc tmobile has by far the fastest consistent data speeds in and around nyc. btw, nyc is tmobiles largest market, wtf would they cover it in 2G? i havent seen anything below hspa+ in nyc for the last 4 years. hspa+ is 3(.5)G, with data speeds over 42mbps.

Your very lucky, i wish i could switch to tmobile, better phones, better prices, better customer service, better a lot of things lol. But here in the pacific north west specifically eastern Washington, tmobile sucks fat balls as soon as you step out of a city and sucks pretty bad if you're near any big buildings. Its like they used the very least possible towers to cover my city lol
