MicroSD to Micro USB Adapter, Expand your Nexus 10 Storage. - Nexus 10 Accessories

What if you could add more storage to any Android device with a tiny adapter?
A MicroSD to Micro USB adapter. This indiegogo project aims to receive funding for the creation of a tiny adapter -- the worlds first of it's kind so you no longer have to worry about running out of space for your favourite videos, music or photos. All we need is your support to help fund the creation of this adapter.
http://www.indiegogo.com/microsdtomicrousb
The adapter is so small it can happily sit with your keys as a keyring; store the whole of your favourite TV series, music collection and more in the palm of your hands.
Support the project and be the first to receive the adapter. If the project doesn't get funded, your receive a full refund, nothing to lose.

Just a random thought - they should make it bendable, so the card could be behind the tabet and only a small portion would be below the frame.

Making it Flexible is on the roadmap, we are planning on doing it, however, that requires more much testing, and the mechanicals of that are more much complex. we need the initial push to get the necessary funding to get the design FCC approved and compatibility test with as much devices as we can.

Contributed for $16.
This looks like it will be really great! Good luck!

Call me crazy, but wouldn't one be able to do that with wired extension leads? I don't know a whole lot but it seems fairly simple to this 16 year old.

Will this work? I know it's not micro sd though.

Yes, spread the word folks. I've tweeted, facebooked and google+'d the crap outta this and will continue to do so. I'm surprised you are only at the amount you are. It seems to me that this would be more popular.
Well I'll keep plugging this until every Android user i have contact with sees it.

Thanks, make sure to use your "custom" link to share, we are tracking referral, and if we are funded, the person with more referral will get a Nexus 7 32GB (More details at the website if interested).
We have a very large amount of visitors, many are interested but are holding up. Maybe to see if the project is going to get closer to its goal, or maybe they just want to wait for a more complete, retail ready from. I hope they realized that without the initial push we can't get there. All i can do is support, answer questions and spread the word as much as I can.
We have the Nexus 10 on order already, so we will be testing as soon as we get it. We are also prototyping a Build in storage option (A.K.A Micro USB Flash drive). :good:

So I already planned to do this with a microsd card adapter and an OTG cable for about half the price. That way I can connect a few devices at once too... Any reason I should spring for this instead?

Hey Manaox,
Functional they are the same, depending on the quality of the OTG cable, speed should be the same (there are some cases reported that some really inexpensive OTG cables degrade the speed a bit), if you don't mind the size and having the "cable" hanging around, that is a perfect way to do it. that;s exactly what I did before I decide to design a better solution.
Personally, I hate that "tail" on my device, I rather have something smaller, that I can maybe have on my keyring or in a pocket on my case and i can easily plug and play. But there is nothing wrong with the OTG cable + MicroSD-USB adapter (or Flash drive).

What you really need to work on, besides keeping the size down, is some sort of clamp mechanism, as a strain-relief for the actual USB port (especially the pathetic shallow and sloppy port on the N7). Without that strain relief, expect to see a LOT of complaints about breaking the USB port.
Might also want to consider an "L" shape that runs along the edge rather than straight out. It'll be a bit trickier to manufacture but would make it far less prone to "snapping off" and it'll be less clunky looking if it doesn't protrude out as far.
Finally, if you're making it device specific for the N7, a ribbon cable (or hard cable) that does a 180 to the back would be ideal. The actual reader portion could mount in the middle of the speaker/Asus logo area. A few was to make this mounting work, from velcro to double-sided tape to semi-permanent plates mounted to the back with a clip or magnet, etc.
Actually, the more I think about it, a rigid cable sheath in the shape of a "C" would be ideal, if it was a tight fit (almost a clip) to the chassis. A lot of the torque that would be applied to the USB port would be absorbed/prevented by the reader portion resting snugly on the back.

EDIT: I stand corrected, I can see the MicroUSB on the side, besides the size, it should do the job. for that size of device I would much rather use a OTG cable, but it comes down to preferences

Mounting the galaxy tab in-dash

I'm interested in replacing a double din headunit with the galaxy.
Can you post pictures/tips/comments on how you have accomplished this?
Ideally I'd like something that could pass tech inspection for autocross (a type of autoracing).
I did see this and thought it was pretty interesting:
...ugh I have a couple of youtube links, but can't post them until I get my post count up.
I was also interested in doing this. I would imagine if you could mount it so that it was recessed/clamped in, that it would pass tech inspection. Though you would prolly have to go through the official rule book for your class and see what exactly they are looking for.
I was thinking about doing something for my 2011 WRX as well. Although I know it's an iPad, here is something I thought was badazz...
i also want to know about it,it looks so cool in some of the youtube videos
Ah, now this thread I like!
I've been thinking about a lot of things to implement my SGT into my car. The only first problem I ran into was.. do I want this thing forever in this car?
Back then I only had it for a wintersports vacation. To navigate and watch movies.
My most wanted version is/was to build it into a lexputer (I own a Lexus IS200).
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/228/lexputer1.jpg
BTW: I'm still looking for this!
But since I couldn't find it AND I didn't really know if I was gonna keep this tablet I decided to build a rack in my own simple way.
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/197/17516817242650946981310.jpg
(don't laugh) ;-)
I adjusted my amp and receiver of my car for now with a fm-modulator (not the best sound quality). Since I cannot find the right cables to connect it directly (i.e. a interface adapter).
I tried to build my own, but I'm still in search for the right connector.
So this is my result.
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/853/17307717401206264459110.jpg
I attached a Brodit holder to my own construction. Et voila.
So my to list:
Get a Lexputer
Get the right interface adapter from SGT to Lexus IS200 stereo
Get a keyboard
Build it all nicely into my dashboard
to mod: soz to adjust my external links. Haven't made to eight replies yet. But I am legit
don't forget to add something like this to the setup.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-h_J7RDXdw
Here is a great setup that takes advantage of the Tab's "double DIN" size, I'd like my tab to be removable tho( or just buy another....)
The biggest pain it that there is (currently) no connector for the tab that does audio and power(is there?) Maybe hack together a charge cable and component-out cable?
My setup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akJAqJL2aPg
If you mount it in the dash where the double din is located, you won't be able to use the camera to record your runs. With the car app I'm using, via the GPS it displays speed, elevation, etc during playback, so it'll help you fine tune your sessions.
Use dailyroads, it's a free app. This is what the screen looks like while filming and playing back:

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
You'll need one or two of these, as well.
That way you can adjust the volume without having to do it on the Tab, and with a lot more precision. It gets to be a pain in the a$$, believe me, having to reach for the volume control buttons on the Tab. I have 2, one for the sub amp and 1 for the 4 channel, mounted right under my arm rest and they are easily accessible.
The rearview mirror isn't really functional in my vehicle, so I pulled down. That's the add'l piece stuck to the windshield. I'm going to integrate the Tab mount's base to utilize the rearview mirror mount, so that I can pull it if I decide to sell the truck and want to return it to stock.
A keyboard really isn't necessary, IMHO. But I guess it depends on where you mount it. Swype works fine for what you need, and voice command does, as well.
You might also want to pick up one of these:
I hate having cords and crap all over the place, so I have this installed instead so I can power the Tab, my cell, and 1 add'l 12v device w/out having something coming out of the cigarette lighter.
grt work

I got my hands on one of those last week, and after looking at it, you'd be hard-pressed to try and keep that SGT docked in that thing in a vehicle. I think you could make a car mount out of it, though, and it would be successful.
Another thing I can relate using the OEM car dock....the mount has a spring in it that bounces a bit too much. As I revert to making a more permanent mount, the spring will be eliminated from the equation.
One of my main concerns in figuring how to mount it was to make sure that I could successfully utilize the camera. I want to be able to capture video of all the nimrods in traffic with me that don't know how to drive, so the mount location works perfectly. At some point, I'd like to get around to fabbing up an enclosure that will allow me to slide the tab in and out of like this setup:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHVm6WptQvg
but I want it to be a reversible setup so that I by simply replacing the OEM center console/bezel with another, I can revert back to stock w/minimal work.
I see a lot of people mounting iPads in their vehicles, but IMHO, it's a bit LARGE for the front of the car. I think the SGT is the perfect size for what we're trying to accomplish.
nice work!!!!

Here's the solution, finally a video/audio cable that also charges!
is it possible to connect a reversing camera to the tab?
Ya, mount the back-up cam screen under the dash in front of the Tab's camera ;-)
With the dock is it possible to seperate the hdmi out to rca to split the sound to an amp and the yellow to headrest monitors?
NEVERMIND IT DOESN'T WORK!
I found the hdmi to rca with hdmi cable at amazon.com. I figure with this the tab gets charged and you get the opportunity to run a screen. Here's the link:

Oh by the way I found an mini amp with a remote that controls everything fade, bass, fm, treble, and volume. They are super cheap like 40 bucks.
Here's the link where you can see the setup:

It should of been 7.7" !!

I'm looking for a android device to start learning and experimenting on...would like to learn Java in the long run.
I feel a nexus device is probably the best place to start but God dang! that Bezel! Can't stop staring at it...like a huge mole on someones nose or something lol
It should of been 7.7" !!!
Its really putting me off pre ordering, now i'll have to wait and see it in person.
I'm beggining to get my hopes up that Asus will soon release a 'better' version like samsung does after producing the nexus phones.
Too bad you don't like it - but you hold the tablet by the bezel.
In landscape, you hold it with both hands...
Personally, I prefer holding the bezel to accidentally clicking on the touch surface.
I don't see a problem with the bezel. On a phone it would be overkill but you hold tablets in a different way unless you have huge monster hands.
I've also decided to try my hand at a bit of coding and I can't wait until I get to the stage when I can apply it on my Nexus 7 (when I get it).
I'm not talking about the side bezel (portrait mode) its the thick top and bottom that gets me. I feel that even when i'm using it, it will get under my skin. I hope it grows on me in 2 weeks (should be released by then).
The thickness of it seems more than adequate for gripping it properly...even though now that I was holding up a magazine I'm starting to see your point.
It still should of been 7.7 though

Wow whose getting their panties in a twist? Why are you getting all defensive their dude?
I just shared my opinion to see if I was the only one and obviously there was a reason to a thick bezel. Thanks to a couple of friendly fellow members above they proved to me that the top and bottom bezel is handy...so i'll probably use it and forget about the bezel.
Same goes for design, maybe it has its place that I just didn't consider
Martias Duarte, the current Director of User Experience at Android, said the large bezels were a conscious choice, for both aesthetic and usability reasons. He said it will probably go under appreciated, and may even remain unnoticed, but he holds the design of the Nexus 7 very close to his heart.
The asymmetrical bezels were implemented so that you can hold the device nicely in landscape, play games efficiently, and also because artwork is often matted asymmetrically.

I have a nook color, and I can speak for the need of a large bezel on a 7" device. I ended up getting a case that folds like a book just so that I'd have something else to hold on to.
I disagree with Matias Duarte completely on the need for larger bezels. I don't mind a thicker device, but I absolutely want the front face to be all screen and no bezel (i.e. a few mm on the side and 5 mm top and bottom). Any concerns for aesthetics (really?) or the need to hold on to something are overridden by the desire to get the thing in a jacket pocket. Nevertheless I ordered a Nexus 7 not because I appreciate the physical design - I don't, I think it's ugly. But who cares, I wanted the Nexus experience and after being disappointed by all the Nexus phones, at least now I can get a device with low financial commitment (low initial cost and no monthly plan) that is the pure Google experience.
I hope in the future that Google comes out with a Nexus 6 using something like Toshiba's very high resolution 6" panel with almost no bezel. Until then, I'll play with the Nexus 7 and dream about the future.
Dara Parsavand
First world problems! jk
I'm fine with the 7" design. It don't matter to me because I just want a more portable tablet for use while on the bus to work. My TouchPad is too bulky for everyday use (for me at least).

well there are rumors of a larger nexus tablet. imo the nexus 7 is the perfect size. its about the size of a dvd case which is easy to handle with one hand, large enough to read pages and small enough to where you dont have to carry it in purse or backpack.
I think the bezel on the bottom really sticks out because of those on screen soft keys. I realize that has been pretty standard since ICS though. I don't know how much sense Matias Duarte makes on the whole design of the bezel on the Nexus 7 as being similar to a matted frame. I haven't seen a whole lot of framing with a longer bottom bezel. I've had artwork professionally framed a couple of times, one is hanging in my room, and everything is centered. I could be wrong though. I don't know much about framing aesthetics.
That being said, I'd rather have a higher resolution 7" screen with greater pixel density than a lower res, less ppi 7.7" screen.
I don't think the design of the Nexus 7 is perfect by any means, but this is an affordable tablet. Compared to the Nook Tablet and the Fire, this thing looks pretty decent. Sure it's no Galaxy Tab or iPad, but it's not really at those price points.
>I haven't seen a whole lot of framing with a longer bottom bezel.
Both Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire have the same asymmetric "bottom heavy" bezel design. Much more pronounced on the Nook.

I was thinking about this today, so I went and had another look and feel at the 7.7 As mentioned somewhere in this thread, it makes it more 'pocketable' and is still OK to hold and grip, turn into landscape mode etc.
It however is not going to be the deciding factor of my purchase. The price of the 7.7 here is over £450 ... that is mad money, the new iPad cost less and the Nexus will cost less than half that!

A 1 1/4" fan from radioshack
a rechargeable 9v battery
a switch for the fan
possible power and volume buttons
this case would be used for those of us who extreme overclock ex running at 1.6ghz with the gpu at 520 who want to rid of some heat.
WHAT THIS CASE WOULD NOT HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a rechargeable 9v battery
a switch for the fan
possible power and volume buttons
this case would be used for those of us who extreme overclock ex running at 1.6ghz with the gpu at 520 who want to rid of some heat.
WHAT THIS CASE WOULD NOT HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wifi antenna
gps antenna
bluetooth antenna

Why not to that extreme, what about a slimmer back with USB OTG built in and a slot for the USB, where u insert a small one and can cover it.

Wow, thats a good idea, but it would have to go over the top a little in order to plug the connector in.
A USB OTG built in case, with a cooling system?! Count me in!

Sorry to go off topic, haha, anyways, my tablet doesn't get hot, I think the best thing for you to do is just add more copper to the existing heat sink, airflow will only drag dust into the tablet.
Just went and grabbed my hefty set of dial calipers! time to start modeling!
And also, i might put a small and thin filter (very small pores) inbetween the case and the fan but i think as long as you dont kick it under the fridge while the fan is on i think it would be all right
in order to hold onto the tablet without copying googles latches..... im afraid to say that
the back will have to come above the edge of the tablet and snap over the top just a little hopefully though. should solve the not level with the bezel screen issue that is stock. win win
EDIT* Facepalm, my calipers dont go above 6in how did i not see that coming....
how to measure corner Radius anyone?
Bumpity
Can someone find me a small, compatible usb otg cable that i can put in here and mount?

in my dreams.
anyways i just made a shell of what the case should look like for it to fit inside
now time to add vents and the fan mount area!
Just an update for some people....
a standard rechargeable 9v battery would run the fan for about an hour and a half
if i put 2 in there, it would make it balanced and give about 3 to 3.5 hours of fan life (about what you get with a fully overclocked kernel)
so what will it be, 1 or 2?
if you used non rechargeable 9v's you would get about 5.5 hours of fan life, 2 would get you 11 which would be good
So more development has happened
got the case "complete" afak until i can print a prototype which is a week or so
i know its a bit thick, but what do you want from 2 9v's and a fan?
i hope some of you will get excited about how development is actually happening\
Tell me whatcha think!

This does look quite nice I do kinda like the ability to use NFC though and have an overall lightweight device, but perhaps something like this would be nice on a stand instead? Then I can put my N7 on the stand, do some benchmarking, games, whatever else I want, and then when I want to travel, I simply take the back off and go back stock.

Honestly? I think you're wasting your time and everyone else's. No-one is going to buy something like that to cool a gadget that doesn't even get hot in a case, which brings up another point, where would you find a case to fit your souped up N7 afterwards?
There has to be a more worthy project for you to spend your time and money on.

A lot of people here flash custom kernels to overclock their CPU to 1.64 GHz. In this instance, the device can get noticeably hotter after heavy usage...so this case will serve a purpose for some. Also, I believe the OP plans on integrating an inbuilt OTG mount, who wouldn't want that?!
Why don't you put a radiator, pump, and reservoir for kicks? A water-cooled tablet would be crazy badass!
Pardon the sarcasm. I believe people will be more interested in a built-in usb hub. Slap in a micro sd card reader in one port and 3 fullsize female usb in the other (for keyboard, mouse, portable drive, sixaxis controller, etc.). No more lack of sd card slot problem. Of course it will need a little tweak by swapping the mount points of the internal and the external sdcards, but it is doable.
If you want, instead of a micro sd, you can go for a multi card reader so the users will have options. Pictures or videos in the storage card can be viewed, edited, saved, or emailed from their dslr's straight to the tablet for example. The possibilities are endless.

Nexus 7 CAD model!

Ok so here is a lil mockup. For probably 95 percent of accessories its good enough. I just took a pair of calipers to mine and here we have it.
solidworks: http://www.mediafire.com/?b8mjj6k9fj9cjzo "NO LONGER AVAILABLE"
IGS file: http://www.mediafire.com/?r8cernk6dbhgdqs "NO LONGER AVAILABLE"
I'm putting toether a dock right now
my calipers are accurate to probably .001" add a few more thousandths for human error lol. I'd say you'd be pretty safe putting your tolerances to .003. My only part i'm not as accurate on is the radius's seeing as i don't have the tools to more accurately measure it. But for a dock they aren't that important. IF anyone has more accurate info for them i'd love to update the model!
UPDATE! 11/10/2012
-went ahead and added the micro usb and 3.5mm holes.
-fixed the lower bezel to more accurately mirror actual bezel.
-added edrawing file

*** Nexus Docks***
With the arrival of 4.2 from what the forums say, the new kernal now supports the pogo pins on bottom. So i threw together a lil simplistic rough of a dock im thinking of getting printed out. The second pitcure shows the pogo "channel" i modeled in, so that i can wire them in once they come from china I would love your feedback (touchups rounding edges and whatnot havn't been done yet, but any big design flaws or suggestions would be great)

what brand of calipers are you using and are they digital or dial? just curious.
Just out of curiosity what material were you going to be making your dock out of? I was debating with myself on what materials I should use that are easy to manipulate since I do not have access to the likes of wood and/or metals to mould it to the shape I want.
Your model is pretty good but I spotted an error with it.
On your model, the lower part of the bezel is drafted outwards but on my Nexus 7, the lower part is drafted inwards.
If you could add the USB port and 3.5mm socket it would also be even better. )
Dave...
PS.. I used the IGS file.

Lol, just skimming the thread title, I expected something with a maple leaf on it.
Ya I work developing orthopedic implants and at my office we have all sorts of fancy stuff, micrometers, optical comparitors, CMC machines. But thats there, and i am enjoying my weekend. But I bought an average 12" pair of calipers. Ya i actually colaberated a bit with one of my buddies on this to throw together a fast mockup, and the lower bezel was his, easy fix though. And ya i know i'm missing the ports. Two reasons they are there:
1. They would be next to no use trying to get their relative positioning accurate with a pair of calipers, thats a job for better tools i'll have to do later.
2. For my purposes of building a desktop dock, i didn't need anything but the outermost measurements, but once people work out the pogo pins i plan on wiring that into it as well
Also I was just going to put it through a 3d printer we have a the university i go to, and then finish it off with some fine sanding and high gloss black or something. I'll be sure to post the drafts i go through. Any and all constructive critism would be much appreciated, fresh eyes are always apppreciated.
Also I find CAD mockups to be in extremely short supply. I'd love for this to become a thread with some colaboration going on. If you make any improvements to my model, UPLOAD IT!!! Or just any ol thing pertaining to our beautiful device

Ya I was just reading that thread and actually went ahead and bought a 10 pack of those pogo pins from eBay. This is exciting news if we Can get a functional slick dock in the works before Asus releases theirs. Ya ill model in the pogo holes in tomorrow for sure. I myself am working on a dock obviously and once I get it printed out on the 3d printer ill be able to make the fine tunes to things like the pogo pins and other holes that are all the toughest parts to model accurately (as far as true position is conacerned)
Again for all you other drafters post your stuff up, let's get the collaborating going!

[make this] Pogo keyboad dock

What i want is a keyboard dock like the transformers. The problem is our little tablet inst big enough for a comfortable keyboard. So one of you wonderful manufacturer's need to make this happen. Expand the keyboard size to a decent comfortable level and add external speakers to the sides of the slot that the nexus 7 slides into. That way the keyboard can be much bigger without looking silly.

Edit: I do realize that my op seems to focus on the keyboard, i dont know why i wrote it the way i did. The reason i mentioned the transformers dock was the external battery and not having to connect a device via bluetooth every time i went to use it. And for some reason i made the speakers seem like they would just be there to take up space when in reality what i ment was i actually want them there.
This would be so cool! If someone could mod a laptop keyboard to fit a N7 I'd buy it.
Search eBay or Amazon man, they're full of keyboard cases from faux leather ones to full up metal ones.

Those are nothing like what i described. Not even close.
It's a full keyboard via micro usb or bluetooh that you can slide/click it into (since you really can't truly 'dock' it into anything since the plug is on the bottom and would have to be in portrait orientation to be truly docked), so it's realistically the closest you can get for the time being. Just trying to help out and give alternatives man.
Pogo pins. Hence the title pogo keyboard dock and the op saying like the transformer dock. Extended battery/keyboard + speakers. I don't know why you think a tablet with pogo pins that already has a dock with external speaker Jack that uses the pogo pins can't actually be docked to something.
I think the best thing to do would be to wait for i/o in May and see what the new N7 will be like (Is it gonna have pogo pins too) and then from there someone can make a kickstarter for this. I for one would be interested in getting one if it was availible.
I'd be all over a kick starter for this.

I don't see what the problem is with using a case/Bluetooth connection and some sort of NFC tag maybe.
The keyboard cases are actually pretty awesome. There is an awesome clamshell keyboard case that matches the N7's completely... so when closed it looks like to N7s screen to screen.
I don't think the pogo allows this kind of connection to use with a keyboard. It provides power and the other is just to tell the N7 it is docked. Most pogo docks basically just enable Bluetooth when docked and stream music/connect that way.

I dont have a problem with the bluetooth keyboard cases. I even ordered one before i posted this.
The reason i want something more like what i posted above is for the external speakers (i know that can be done because the actual nexus 7 dock has audio out) and for the external battery power. The keyboard is actually the part that i want the least.
In all actuality the keyboard could be gone completely and just a case with external battery and speakers would be perfectly fine for me, though the keyboard would be a plus.
Edit: I do realize that my op seems to focus on the keyboard, i dont know why i wrote it the way i did. Accept it is. And you don't know what your talking about.
I've heard that rubbing a dryer sheet over woollen fabric can help stem static cling.
While it can't be made the way the OP imagined, it would be possible to use pogo for power (and sound?) and have an app on the phone that tries to connect to a bluetooth keyboard whenever it is docked...
The existing fake-aluminum keyboard is quite nice, though. I know the OP was more interested in a speaker than a keyboard, but for me it is the opposite. I doubt this will be made, but it isn't impossible.
