[Q] How to get google search app - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know how to get the google search app on the kindle?

0.1. You will need a type of root file explorer
1.There's an app called universalsearch.apk in the /system/app folder, you will first need to rename it universalsearch.apk.bak
2.Then you will need to download one of the jelly bean Google search apps from the guides floating around. There are some that include lib files and other things, and these will give you the best results (Google is your friend)
3. Don't try flashing zips, but push files from your found guide to their respective location. DON'T FORGET TO CHANGE EVERY FILE'S PERMISSIONS TO rw-r--r-- that go into the system folder.
And voila, Google now.

Thanks for the help! Everything is working fine Thought voice search isnt working ): does anyone know how to get it working

Ya, I never got it working. I assumed it was a framework issue with amazon skin. With it on, drivers that control microphone aren't functioning like a normal ICS android device, thus it causes that issue.

Temporary Fun (:

Seeing as some of the framework needs to be modded for a pre-rooted version of the 1.2 ROM I figured I would throw a little zip together with some stuff to play with. Its nothing special. Instructions:
1. Download the attached zip file to your computer and extract it onto your desktop, your documents, your "taxes 1993" folder, "kittens folder", or wherever you want for that matter.
NOTE: THIS IS NOT CWM FLASHABLE, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.
2. Download one of Nemith's ROMs from here.
3. Use winrar, archive manager or any other software you have that can open up zip files and open the rom you downloaded in step 2. Once thats open, click on "system", then "bin".
4. Go back to the files you downloaded and extracted in step 1 and you will see something called 'su' simply drag and drop the 'su' file into that "bin" folder you opened in step 3. It might take a minute to add it to the zip archive so be patient.
5. Once that is done, click the back button in winrar or whatever your using so you will now be in the "system" folder and no longer in /system/bin. You should see a folder called "app", click on it. Once thats open, drag and drop the apks that were included in the zip into there and give them a second to be added in.
6. Once that is done, your free to add any additional apks that you either downloaded or have backed up from a previous setup. (extract some from root explorer before flashing the update if you would like, then copy those on there.)
7. Now that you have all the apks you want added in there, close the zip, put it on your sdcard and flash that bad boy up.
Note: I included 2 launchers in there, VTL and ADW free. You can add both of them if you want and try them out or just pick one or the other. The apk that says something about gojimi is the VTL launcher. Also, feel free to add apps that require root since you have root access thanks to that business with su earlier. This doesnt have the market because BN is gay and their custom framework needs to be hacked, (thank you for the Nook though. ) also, youll need to select one of the custom launchers if you wanna use all of the apps you added. Superuser.apk and the nookcolor tools utility are included in the zip.
I believe this is not considered warez since all the files included are free, mods feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Once again, this doesnt have market, just a guide to adding apps and being able to use root.
Hit thanks if I helped you.

awesome!!!
so no market means no gapps either?
what about amazon appstore?
This is great. I already have it up and running with a bunch of other apks and a third party launcher using this same method, but the nook color tools and root will be helpful too (enabling the installation of "unknown apps" will be very good).

Amazon App store should work now that you mention it. Just download the apk online and put it in there. Hahah Im working on a full rooted rom but I figured Id give you all something easy to do for now.
do all apk have to into system app as i think amazon installs to data folder
You can sideload the Amazon app (or download it through the browser) after you do the steps in the OP. After it boots, open Nook Color Utils (tools?) and then uncheck and check the unknown apps option at the top. After that you should be able to download and install or sideload anything into data/app.

In the stock 1.2 zip thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520&page=5
I suggested loading one of the one-click root apps into the ROM? Does that work?
I did try installing with z4root in system/apps and it didn't work. Though that may have been because it needs to run from data/app (maybe?). Don't know. Haven't tried it that way yet.

This is unbelievable! Thanks so much for this.
I use my nook for 70% reading + 30 % for emailing and web browsing.
I installed CM7 on emmc, but the battery sleep issue is killing (goes from 100 to 0% in a day) + I cannot use the stock Nook reading App. The Nook market app sucks compared to the stock nook app.
I was ideally looking for a solution which would allow me to use the stock nook reader + email + good web browser.
So can I sideload apps such as Dolphin HD browser and Any email client, using this method? Is there any limit to sideloading apps in the system/app folder? I do have a bunch of apk's that I would love to use.
Thanks in advance!

Yes you can do all of that! And I dot think you'll run into any problems unless you have like 600 Mbs of apps. Hahaha
How to flash this?
Please excuse the Noob questions.
How do I go about flashing this? Do I just insert the sd card and boot? Do I hold the n and power buttons? Some other way?
Also, will this all be wiped out if B&N force-upgrades over wifi?
Thanks in advance.

I know it's the long way round, but you could probably extract it from this:

So I gave it a try and it worked. Just drop the apk into /system/app/ set the permissions and reboot.

Im assuming you have a file manager installed (Root Explorer, Es File Explorer)
You have to long press the app, after moving into proper folder /sysstem/app/ and set the same permissions as the others (I cant remember which ones they are exactly but you will be able to tell once in the file system).

You didnt follow the instructions. You shouldnt be trying to install anything because the .apk's are not signed.
However, if you move supernote.apk and supernote.odex into system/app and set proper permissions and then reboot it will work.
still cant install this app. I move both supernote.apk and supernote.odex to system/app. try to set permission in many different ways, but this app still not be installed. i guess i give up.

Ok. Using the .apk from the ROM, i got the app installed but FC upon opening.

[Q] Stock Music App?

So I uninstalled the stock music app and I was wondering how to install it back on to the device?
I got the com.htc.music.apk from system/app/ but I have no idea on how to install it back onto the device?
Ive tried plain old install then adb and both had no success... Can anyone help me and my noobness at this?
Download root explorer, I am assuming you have root. Next locate what folder the file is in. Make sure you have read write privileges by clicking the button art the top of the program. Long press the apk file, select copy or cut, etc. Then find the system folder, go in to it, find apps, go in to it, and place your file here. That should work.

HTCMusic.apk [Stock HTC Vivid]
Here you go bud,
Simply use "File Manager" or another file system app from the market to install the apk files to /system/app. Then reboot.
Be sure to have root and set permissions to match all other items in /system/apps. Also be sure to erase what ever current HTCMusic.apk you currently have in the folder.
Good luck!

Everything just crashes that is sideloaded Rooted

I have a rooted Kindle Fire HD 7" and every google app (talk, gmail, playstore) I try to launch or any game that I try to sideload just flashes white or grey and then crashes/closes.
The only app that I can get to work is the Youtube app, but I can't login, when I try to login it just flashes a prompt and then I'm back to the app.
I've installed the GoogleServicesFramework.apk and followed other DIYs on this site to the T, and have tried every suggestion in every thread, but I am still crashing on everything. I've tried many different ways to get things to launch. I'm wondering if there is something blocking these that came out in the last few days? It looks like a silent update might have caused this?
It doesn't seem like there is a lot of current info on this site and wondering if there are other good resources, that I just can't seem to find.

I changed the permissions to RW R- R- for Vending.apk as defined in each of the different threads. When installing all of these items do I need to copy everything to the system/apps folder? The only file that is requested to be in that folder from every walkthrough is the Vending.apk.

Well first im going to ask, Did you make sure to put in the googleserviceframework.apk with correct permissions in the /system/app folder?

The only apk that needs to be installed in the system\app folder is the vending.apk. And googleloginservices.apk is not needed. Try uninstalling the googleservicesframework.apk and vending.apk then re-install. The first time I installed the vending.apk and googleservicesframework.apk everything worked perfectly. I reset my device to make backups and when I re-did the process(exactly the same way) I kept getting kicked out like you describe. I uninstalled and did it again and worked perfect again. Same thing happened with Google Movies apk. Not sure why, other than these devices were not made to run these applications and we are forcing the system to do so.
Remember not all apps you sideload are not going to work.

Stock browser + Flash

I just updated to 4.2.1 and rooted
I really hate Chrome and miss the stock AOSP browser I was using on CM10
Is there an easy way to set up that basic/stock browser? Key word "easy" unless I can get some really good step-by-step instructions.
I think loading flash is as easy as installing an APK at that point.
Thanks!

follow the instructions written by Spannaa and use the browser apk attached to turbotab's post.
good luck :good:
if ya need additional help; step by step let me know tbh
jt.one is right. You just need root, a file manager like Root Explorer (superb paid app), ES File explorer or Astro (both free), and the browser.apk from the link above.
1. Rename the 2 BrowserProxyProvider files in /system/app by appending a .bak extension on them.
2. Copy Browser.apk into the /system/app folder.
3. Set the proper permissions (check permissions on another app to see what it should look like).
4. Sideload flash after downloading it from the Adobe website if you don't have it already installed.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'm unclear what the proper order is to do this.
OR easier yet......
download the latest Dolphin browser from the market...
and navigate to:
data/data/mobi.mgeek.Tunny/Browser/shared_prefs/
using root explorer or equivalent and delete:
mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser_preferences.xml.
Thus re-enabled flash in dolphin.......

Excellent instructions. I'm about 90% with you, except for #3. I know how to assign permissions, but am unclear about the part to check permissions on another app. Just any old app? So for example I browsed to /system/app and found GoogleEarth.apk. Its permissions are
rw- r-- r--
So browser.apk will have those exact permissions?
Thank you!!!
UPDATE: The download file is browser.zip am I to rename this to APK?

Good video, but it revealed something very important that's missing....
the fact that you can't use bookmarks in the stock browser..... they won't work.
That kills it for me.
Now i'm not sure what to do. Keep Chrome, but not have flash? I use flash-embeded sites almost regularly (just came from CM10) but it was pretty unstable...
Whoa partner. Bookmarks work just fine with the AOSP browser. At the upper right in the browser there is a heart (add bookmark), magnifying glass (search) and an icon with a star in it (bookmarks). It came with many common links, espn, cnn, twitter, facebook, etc. and it is easy to add them. Any page you want to bookmark, just hit the star to add it. I don't think it will sync your existing Chrome bookmarks, but once you manually add them, you can back them up with Titanium backup so you won't have to add them again. Flash works perfectly with the aosp browser and it is fast.
Yes, set the permissions the same as GoogleEarth (long press, permissions). Must be in r/w mode not read only to view or change permissions. The top 3 should be checked for 'Read' and just the top one for 'Write'.
I d/l the browser.apk link in the second post to my computer and it came through as browser.apk. Then I copied it to my phone. If you got browser.zip, did you d/l it directly to the phone? The file that must be copied into /system/app is browser.apk. Look at the browser.zip and see if it can be unzipped and contains browser.apk. If not, try renaming it to browser.apk

You're absolutely correct. I don't know what the guy in the vid was talking about. I was able to get stock browser installed, flash installed, set up bookmarks, set up non-chrome bookmark widget...so the stock bookmark widget which is far superior to Chrome.
Everything the way I like it. Thanks for pointing that out. That's awesome.
THANKS TO EVERYONE ON THIS POST WHO WAS SO QUICK TO HELP OUT. I LOVE THIS COMMUNITY
Learned a lot today too!!
