[Q] Well thought I knew how but didn't :( (Ringtones) - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was able to use custom ringtones one WP7 upon trying to transfer those to WP8 they don't work can someone enlighten me, I have to be missing something simple.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that you are overcomplicating the issue (or rather, MS overcomplicated the issue with WP7, requiring ringtones to be less than 40 seconds long and having their Genre tag set to Ringtone.)
If you plug your WP8 into a PC and browse it in Explorer, along with 'Music', 'Pictures' etc. folders there should be one called 'Ringtones'. Just drag and drop

Figured it out
I copied from music folder over because the new desktop sync put it there.

I had done that but once I synced the phone with desktop it placed my previous ringtones even though genre was ringtone it placed all of them in the music folder. I copied them from my phone music folder to my ringtone folder and it didn't work, and once I copied from my phone to desktop those ringtones and back to phone /ringtones it works. So the drag and drop for ringtones goes from PC to phone only I read that somewhere today.

Assigning own music to sms message

Hi
How do I assign my own music to an sms text alert? on my TyTN 11
copy and paste the tones you would like to use into the My Documents folder or Windows folder on your phone.
you'll find all the notification tones in settings>sounds & notifications>notifications. Select from the drop down menu and change The tone.
WTF?! When syncing to laptop or desktop, choose storage card preferably and put anything you wish in the ''My Documents'' folder. You might have to create this new folder if it's not present. Try googling your question next time finished with "xda"
Thanks Teh Reaper but I have done as you said and in sounds and notifications it still only allows the sounds that came with the phone
forget the copy n paste method, you have to be very exact where you paste it to, just put your audio or even video files in the My Documents folder from your pc
I had this problem as well when I got my Kaiser. Put the files into the Windows folder. This did the trick for me.
MyDocuments does NOT work for SMS or other notifications. Only regular ringtones work there.
Most likely you have to convert your SMS tones to wma before you are able to use them. SMS sounds didn't work as mp3 for me. There are lots of converters available on the web. Simply choose one.
http://www.google.de/search?q=mp3+t...&rls=org.mozilla:de:official&client=firefox-a
No no no, you don't need any converters as long as they are mp3 or even m4 format, it'll read under settings from My Documents folder
For me, this doesn't work, as you described it. I tried this. My method works for me! It is just a suggestion.
My documents works for Every type of notification!!! Make sure its My documents from the storage card though
For some reason My documents from the device do not relate to sounds and notifications, again, try My Documents folder from storage card. I'm currently using a customized message for Every notification
Thank you
Thanks for your help in resolving issue.Works a treat.
1st time on thread for me,so thanks.

Placing files for ringtones, alerts, alarms etc ?

I might have asked this before, but I'm not getting answers anywhere. I really want to be able to have the Tilt access files directly from my micro SD card in order to use them as ringtones, alarms etc.. But every time I try and use a file for a ringtone, the Tilt automatically copies said file to the "My Documents" folder on the main memory. After a while, this is going to cause the memory to be depleted.
Secondly, even if I wanted to use files from the Tilt's main memory for rings and such, it seems there are redundant directories that can be used. But I'm not quite sure of exactly what kind of files should go where. In the Windows folder, there's a "Rings" sub directory. I've put my ringtones in there, and that works fine. They will also work from the "My documents" folder, as stated earlier. However, If I want to access files for use with MMS or text files or e mail alerts or alarms, I'm not sure of where to put them. I'm guessing that if I toss most of them into the main Windows directory, that will solve the bulk of it, but I don't think it works for alarms...
Can anyone help with these things ?
I believe alerts and alarms need to be a .wav file. While ringtones are able to be .mp3's. This is from my own testing a while ago..I could be wrong >.<
you can use .mid, .aac, .wav or .mp3 for ringtones. for ringtones, the files can even be placed on the memory card.
Alerts (such as those for text messages) have to be WAV files and they must be placed directly in the \Windows folder (no subfolder). If you cannot see the Windows folder on the root of your device, you will need to change your Windows Explorer setting to not hide System files.
Ringtones are stored either in the \Windows\Rings folder or the My Ringtones folder in My Documents.
You can find instructions on these forums on how to move My Documents to your Storage Card, however, which lets you store as many ringtones as you like in that subfolder.
Interesting. Thanks guys. So from what I've gathered from here and other forums, alerts and messages etc, definitely have to be .wav files. That stinks, but at least I know now, thanks. Secondly, I guess it would be of help to find that program which would store the my documents folder on the SD card.
Would anybody by chance know what that program/app is ?
One more thing. Is there anyway possible to get rid of the pre-installed ringtones and alerts etc from the Windows folder and such ? I'd love to free up that space and replace them with stuff that I make or find.
Thanks !

Ringtone/Notification & Sounds Questions

The G1 has a silence mode, but it unfortunately only silences ringers and notifications. If I want to play a game of Solitaire I am blasted in the face with stupidly loud music. Is there a system-wide switch to just disable ALL sound through the built in speaker?
Go to setting -> sounds & display -> media volume bring then it all the was down you should be able to map a. Shortcut to this with anycut.
Hope this helps
Ringtone/Notification Questions
Is there any way to put your own ringtones on the phone through a storage card like on the wing or other windows mobile phones, I just got the phone and am playing with it right now ad so far don't see no way to do this. If there's a way can someone please help.
I added 2 tones from my wing to the memory card from the G1. Placed them on the root of the card and then installed from the market "Rings Extended". Then selected them.
download the rings extended app. that will let you do what you want.
google market: rings extended
+1 rings extended.
I had a stale page load and the two previous posters beat me to it!
-- edit --
also, fwiw, with 'rings extended' I found that the media listing was recursive as I had an entire directory structure from my wm6 phone. So, you can still have categorized directory structures if you like.
if you use the correct folder structure there will be no problems setting up the ringtones

there's a thread with that in it, I don't remember where.
If someone finds the thread for the correct folder structure please let me know, and neiltoe idk how to put it in the root folder market extended, I'm coming from a wing and I had a 2gb storage card for the wing so I took the card out my wing and put it in the g1 it sound like the way u do it neiltoe u have to keep the 1gb storage card.
hopefully this link works:

Alternatively you can just go to the music player, choose a song and press " use as ringtone".
First off, what helped me the most- connect the phone to a pc and enable the usb on the g1. When it pops up (it will look like a mass storage device on the pc) format it and then create these folders at the root of the storage card:
music
ringtones
alerts
notifications
Anything inside music will show up on the music player. Anything outside should not show up anywhere but where it is placed. If you do not format the card first, this will not be the case at least in my experience. Formatting seems to make it all work right.
The folder structure is taken from the tmobile website online instruction manual- cant remember the page

While true, it also means you may have a bunch of ringtones and alerts mixed in with your music, something I dont like
for the record:
/sdcard/media/audio/ringones
etc
works as well, as does
/sdcard/media/video
for video files.
good to know about the alternative folder layouts
what are you using to play video files? I grabbed the "video player" on the market but curious to know what others are using.
Thanks a lot guys, you were very helpful.

put stuff into the folders. uncheck the USB box on the phone (you lose the PC connection at that point). Now your phone can find stuff.

Xperia X2 ringtones missing

I have my SEXperia X2 for almost 5 days and I am almost ready to throw it at the can-first I had a major unequal battle with the sms vibration and thx god after installing some sony-ericsson software update I raised the victory flag...but it was just a short break...today I heard some strange noise coming from my phone and when I reached it....it was ringing with some strange ringtone....I tried to put some of my old ones but what did I found no sounds in my ringtones folder at my card I tried to put some mp3's but no it is not possible, when I try to put a file there it rejects me,when I enter the folder is empty,at least I managed to put an mp3 as a ringtone from my music folder but it makes a copy to the phone memory and decrease it.So I am wondering does anybody had the same problem and what I must do to find my files or to relate files from my mp3's without sexperia to make copies of them at the phone memory?
I am sorry for the strange story and probably I should post this somewhere else but I didn't find any related topics after an hour of searching

AFAIK you have to put ringtones to phone's memory to make
it available for ringtones.
yeah I know that,at the beginning before the update(from the official SE page) all of the ringtones were at the my ringtones folder at the phone memory, but after it all of my ringtones were moved at the storage card at a folder named "my ringtones" and that was great because the phone mem remains less occupied and I was very happy with that and I paste a few songs there and they rang as my contacts and phone melodies but than just in a sudden they disappeared from there and the folder is useless at the moment.
sounds strange. normally when you update it completely wipes your phone and internal memory and starts from scratch. so all of your personal info and ringtones should of been lost. seems that you where lucky they randomly appeared on your memory card.
i found that if i put mp3s into the my ringtones folder on the phone memory nothing came up in the sounds and notifications settings at first. if i used the spb panel and selected contacts i could set the ringtone from the storage card straight away. i went back into the sounds and notifications settings and they had finally appeared in there too.lol. maybe the spb setting is better at searching or something.
no idea why your folder would suddenly wipe itself though. youll just have to try and copy your mps3 back in there and see if they work again... if they dont appear straight away try resetting your phone. it might only scan the storage card at certain times. mine are in "storagecard\my documents\my ringtones" theyre still mp3s and dont appear to be converted in anyway... maybe try deleting the my ringtones folder and creating a new one. it might of got corrupted...
theres an update due in march so hopefully if they do dissapear again its something that will be fixed in a few weeks.
The situation is unclear
how the ringtones appeared on phones memory folder before:
moved by the user or were there by default.
Standard SE upgrade means wiping off the personal data
but loading all the corporate default material
like videos, music and rjngtones too.
Try to see what choice you have in ringtones settings.
I finally came to a solution after playing with my phone till 2 am last night,I erased the folder named my ringtones at the storage card because it was inaccessible then I made a new one with the same name then I put some mp3 there and now they are still there and I can mark them as a contact ring tones even, but after a while today I found that my ringtone was changes again with some other melodie(all other mp3 were there this time but the one with which the phone was ringing was changed, but was still at the folder )-of course some ugly default se ringtone and after poking awhile I reached to an answer:I have some program called modaco-nodata that is installed at my phone card and this program blocks the gprs traffic,so when the blocking is on it blocks some folders and make them inaccessible.First it was on my storage card and it blocked the access to windows folder there, now I've put it at the phone memory and it blocked my "my device/windows" folder now I am going to remove it from the phone and I will see the result-than I will give a feedback if it was the reason of all that strange behaviour of my Xperia.
Thank you for the ideas
Hi! It happened the same to me!!! I lost almost all the ringtones that came with the phone!!!! What can I do? How did you manage the problem definitely?
Is it possible to get all the old ringtones?
Thanks

[Q] Connecting phone to PC, treat as proper storage drive.

This one has puzzled me for quite some time.
When connecting my One or most android phones to my PC, it will appear as a drive but it NEVER works like an SD card or USB stick would.
Here is a list of things which really frustrate me about this:
You can't drag'n'drop from iTunes (or another audio programme) or WinRar to the drive, it won't have none of it. Instead you have to copy/extract the file to another location, say desktop and then move it to your desired folder on the phone.
Creating a folder on the phone using Windows causes issues. I create a new folder, it asks for a name, I name it and hit enter and then it freezes. For about 2/3 minutes it does nothing and then bam, new folder.
You can't create folder shortcuts. Example, I have podcasts I place in the same directory on the phone, instead of allowing me to create a shortcut or link to the folder, I have to navigate to the folder each time. It's a ball ache.
When you have a usb stick and you copy the address it will look like this, F:\HTC One\Internal storage\backups. When you connect an android phone it looks like this, This PC\HTC One\Internal storage\backups. Obviously pasting this address into a programme for it to use doesn't work as it doesn't recognise This PC.
Everytime I copy certain files to the phone, like m4a, Windows will ALWAYS ask if I want to convert it first. No thanks, leave it. But it asks everytime. If it treated it like a proper drive, this wouldn't happen.
I guess it is treating the phone as a camera or something, but really? It's really irritates me when the limitations on this crop up and leave me furious.
So finally, the question, is there any way which I can do the following:
Every time I connect my phone it will treat it like a proper drive, so I can drag and drop from iTunes etc and create shortcuts which remain when the device is removed and re-inserted.
If it can't ever happen, can someone explain to me why not?
Sorry for the wall of text, been on my mind for a while and annoying me for much longer.
Guess I am the only one with this issue then.

Unfortunately you can't mount it as a drive, it can only be accessed via MTP protocol; so you need to think of it as camera/mp3 player/etc.
But about these questions:

I don't know about iTunes, but Windows Media Player recognizes MTP (and therefore the phone), and you can sync music, pictures, and videos... I would assume iTunes should recognize MTP devices too.

Any program that doesn't know about MTP has that problem, no workaround

Happens to me too, but since I don't copy much stuff to the phone, I don't care. But I'm sure there's some kind of setting (probably in the windows registry) to disable that. Try searching a bit, maybe you'll find it.
