Not a i-bashing thread just a wonder - Nexus 7 General

ok this thread is not to bash i-anything. this is not a rant but a wonder. please do not post any apple-offence here this is strictly equal-sided debate.
now ive been wondering this since i got my nexus and began the usual web-crawl for info on my new device. and what i find the most one sites such as youtube? well.....the thing is its REALLY getting my on extremities is......
why are there so many people comparing the nexus 7 to the i-pad 3?
like i really dont get it,.. i mean how can anyone justify comparing a 7 inch tab to a 10 inch tab? like lets be honest you wont see any of these same people comparing the nexus 10 vs the ipad mini would you?
like ipad mini vs nexus 7 i would see the point as they are in the same class....but this is like we put forward.....our medium rate device in the fight....apple bangs straight in with theyre best ever......and we still give them a slapping so how can this be a comparability of performance?
it just really grind my gears how these "vs" matches are just stupid as any techy would think the same way no?
peace:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

You could look at it another way: People are comparing the Nexus 7 to the iPad 3 because it punches above it's weight
Either way, my boss is unwrapping his new iPad mini opposite me right now, so I'll compare it with my bought-2-days-ago Nexus 7.

i guess i should look at it that way, lol but i just... it just gets to me you know like......i wonder if we will see any nexus 10 vs ipad mini's

As Mickey says, if you compare the ipad mini against the Nexus, the Nexus will win. There appears to be a media bias towards Apple in many quarters, so if they compare it against the iPad 3, they can maybe make the Nexus lose.
Look at it as a compliment.... a bit like if someone compared me to Brad Pitt.... though obviously I'd win easy.... much like the Nexus

err......what?

I see all the comparisons between the Nexus 7 and the i-pad3 as being there was no mini out at the time, and if you are going to compare might as well go at the king of pad. I for one did fine some of those comparisons very good but only as far as durability went. If you think about it you can not even compare the 7 to the mini as they are not on the same os, for a true comparison you would need same os for speed and other things.
I for one was going to give a I-device a try, I admit that I am a big I-hater and mostly fueled by the price, I had heard that the mini they were going to change that..... Then I saw the msrp and went out and bought the nexus.

Easier put nexus 7 googles first flagship tablet, why wouldn't they compare to their biggest rivals new flagship tablet at the time there was no iPad mini

because its like comparing a porche to a bus
10'' tabs are soposed to be power-horses, but to compare a 10inch to a7 inch and moan the 7 inch isnt as powerful is just stupid.,...then again i answer my own qeustion about i-users:highfive:

It depends, on what you want, really...
You could even argue that N7 doesn't have a better screen, as resolution isn't the only thing that matters.

Are you still happy with your Nexus 7?

Hi everybody!
I'm about to get a tablet. Not sure yet which one, but the Nexus 7 is definitely one of my targets.
So I was wondering, if you, Nexus 7 owners, are still happy and would still recommend it.
If not, let me know why and what you'd recommend instead.
Looking forward to your answers.
Kind regards and greetings from Germany.
Yup still love it. My first tablet tho. I'm very on the go and 7" is perfection. Battery lasts me most of the day playing galaxy on fire 2 and streaming shows from xfinity. It runs super smooth and touch seems more sensitive than other devices. Sometimes I have an issue where the screen won't respond but turning the screen on and off seems to fix that.

I think what might help inform your decision is what you intend to use the tablet for.
The prime example being, if you need a lot of local storage, this might not be the device for you as it has no removable SD card slot. (although with rooting and USB OTG you can mount external flash devices)
If you're after a great overall tablet for consuming content, I can't think of a better option at this price. I'm virtually addicted to mine (much to my wife's chagrin).
Its the best. Get one ASAP! Device is works very well. Best bang for buck.
Love it. It's a fantastic device and the form factor rocks as far as i'm concerned.
still like it? its been less than a month lol
ive had 2 defective ones and a 3rd is being sent to me, and i still like it.
Absolutely no regrets, having the power of Tegra and a stock Android install really shows just how powerful the platform can be. And for the price it really is quality piece of kit, the only downsides to my mind are the lack of expandable storage and no HDMI out. But storage can be solved quickly and very cheaply with an USB OTG cable, the HDMI out will soon be solved through Miracast, and the nearest competitors with these features cost almost double the price.
If you're in the market for a tablet, there's really no competition for the Nexus 7 right now unless money is no object.

Soooo who gonna sell their Nexus 7 for a Ipad Mini?
Well come next Month we find out if Apple are gonna launch an Ipad mini, but the question is will you sell your Nexus 7 to buy one if the specs are decent & it has a Retina display plus if the price lands around what the Nexus 7 16GB is atm.
I have no doubt in my mind there will be plenty of Nexus 7's on Ebay if an Ipad Mini does come about next month.
I personally won't be selling mine as im not a fan of Apple never have been, but i reckon some on here will even if they don't admit to it right now.

There's no way Apple will sell an iPad mini at a loss. They have no qualms being the most expensive solution on the market, that's practically their business model. It will be nowhere close to $199. $349 is the lowest I see them pricing an 8GB model.
I love mine, and I don't think Apple is going to fight in the pricing weeds with N7. Lowest the iPAD mini will cost is $249 or maybe even $299
Love it. Perfect form factor for me too. Always felt the iPad was too big for my usage, felt awkward using it out and about. This thing bridged the gap nicely.

Yes, I get more happy the longer I have it. Now after saying that I have to say that screen size is a big factor in deciding what is best for you. I've gone through Acer Iconia A500 10.1 inch, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 inch (still have), iPad New (3) 9.7 inch and now the Nexus 7, 7 inch.
I definitely take the 7 out with me more often than I did the others.
I would visit a Best Buy or some other place that sells tablets that has them in different sized to get a feel for what is good for you and if you decide 7 is the best you should get the Nexus 7. I'm just saying that because I spent a lot of money trying to find my perfect size and should have visited a store in the first place to know my perfect size before going through all those other tablets.
I have the loose screen and it doesn't bother me one bit. It's a great companion for a daily commuter.
I can't put this thing down. It's the only tablet I use anymore.

N7 vs Ipad 3 - which to get ?!

Hey XDA community, I've been coming and going alot lately but I got tons of headaches off this so i thought let's see what you guys think,
I was offered a free ipad 3 from my brother, against getting a N7 from my out pocket, I has an ipod 4g and HTC explorer, so am not a fan or a
hater for any of those platforms actually I love them both equally plus, they are almost identical when it comes to apps availabilty, I know the ipad
might have a slight edge in frames in that area, now onto the most important part, I'll use it mainly for ebooks reading as am studying Comp.
Science and am a gamer web browsing .. ofc ! ( again no hate for the 7-in screen ) and please don't point to the "issues massacre" that's going on
about the N7 althought RMA is not an option for me if anything wrong goes on ...
long post, sry
What's with the crazy font and centering? Makes your post difficult to read.
Get the nexus 7. Compared to the iPad, n7 is just more convenient to hold and type in terms of weight and size and more portable. The size is good enough for reading also at least for me.

Can you get both?
If in your position I would probably try and decide which size device would suit me better.... The bigger iPad is less portable and harder to use as a regular e-reader, but might be better for browsing and textbooks with diagrams and pictures.. The Nexus is more portable and a great all rounder (I am doing an IT degree and have no problems reading my textbooks.
I personally detest Apple's business practices and would never buy one of their devices, but their products are solid and you probably can't go wrong either way.

you've got a good point, reading text about source code might get ugly on the N7 while going back and forth ...
about the "solid" thing, I've done a jailbreak on one of these babies, and the thing got re-springing every once and a while, while the N7 actually begs you to customize it lol
I've got a tickle though .. are you experiencing any lifting or anything ? since u've got an N7

That's not a biased response at all.
@OP- I own both, and both are great devices in their own regard. The screen on the iPad is unparalleled, it has a ton of awesome games, and a bunch of great productivity apps. The Nexus 7 has the customizability, and a great form factor, plus all of Google's great cloud services. I take my N7 with me, and use the iPad at home. I think the 7" is a much better size for portability, and it's the perfect size for gaming, but unfortunately the iPad just trumps Android with the shear number of high quality games available. The N7 is also a better size for reading too. If it comes down to getting an iPad 3 for free or actually buying the N7, then I would take the iPad no question. If you were going to have to spring for either, then it would be a toss up and I would lean towards the N7. If I was in your shoes though, I would take the free iPad and buy an N7
Screw it.. am getting this freebie, then I'll re-think about this whole thing WHY THE HELL SHOULD I SAY NO TO A FREE IPAD !!

Nexus 7 = iPad Mini

Well I've been taking it around a lot lately tethered to my smartphone. Just about everyone that's asked about it the first question people ask: "is that the new iPad mini" :crying:
It's sad that then I say nope "it's google''s tablet the Nexus". Then it's an "oh that's cool" and people go about their business.
I told one person it was and they were so interested in the device...what are these??? widgets? Etc. etc. etc...
It's a sad world in mobile tech.
I hear you, man. I was asked the same question not many days ago. What I will do after this, is that I will say that I got an iPad Mini and watch them get confused and laugh loudly once they find out it isn't. hahaha
My father in law asked if my tablet ran the "droid operating system". Then my sister in law showed her Kindle Fire HD to them and they said it was like an iPad mini. It's no where near an iPad mini.
I laughed.

i have everything apple and somewhat of a fanboy per se. the ipad mini screen sucks. i was never much on android. every device i tried lagged or market apps had compatibility issues ect. i wanted a smaller more portable tablet to use when i didn't want to carry around my ipad 4. along came the nexus 7. if all android products were as fast and optimized it would be great. i love it and it is as fast and such as my ipad. now if more devs would just update their apps to support tablets that would be great. i am an apple guy thru and thru who also has a nexus 7. we live in harmony. not all "fanboys" want to argue but more of them should try a nexus 7. i also will say i keep my nexus 7 simple. no live wallpapers or any of the jazz but that's the apple side of me. nice and simple. rather than laying insults at each other different things work for different people. if you dont try something different now and then you might miss out while you yell and debate your cause. merry christmas everyone.

I have such hatred of all things Apple that I get so defensive when people ask me if my Nexus 7 is an iPad. The Nexus 7 completely blows away the specs of yesteryear that for some reason Apple likes to claim is brand new then charge much more for. I think a device that has such amazing aftermarket developer support that for those who desire, can essentially customize everything they could ever want, is much more worth it than a device you need to "jailbreak" in order just to side-load apps, a feature that doesn't even require any real alterations from stock Android. If you feel you need to buy such a horrible device, go right ahead, but know you're making a terrible choice.
Yep. My aunt at a Christmas party last night asked if it was the new iPad mini and I was a tad surprised when my mom said "Nope, it's a Nexus 7." I guess I shouldn't be too surprised though, she was the one who bought it for me after all. And I've been talking about it for months.

So I own an iPhone and an iPad and I just bought a Nexus 7 today. I'm wondering if anyone thinks this os overkill? So is having 2 tablets overkill or are there other people out there that have 2?

I use my Nexus 7 as a interim replacement of sorts for my Nexus S. Nexus S is a great phone, Google has supported it well and have got my moneys worth out of it.. The problem is.. It's old and just slow.. Its been regulated to being used as just a phone. So the Nexus 7 fills in the roles that have just become unbearable to do via the phone. ie: Maps, Navigation, Music, Email writing etc etc.. It's the perfect high end day planner to grab and go with.
My Nexus 10 fits in everywhere else.. It's usually sitting with me at the PC.. When I'm doing something fullscreen like gaming, or doing an install etc I continue doing my reading, watching a movie, internet etc on the Nexus 10. Since my 40 inch LED for my PC also is used by my Wii-U my Nexus 10 is used in the same light. I can game etc on my Wii-U and keep the N10 around to keep dibs on my internet world. It's also excellent to read with in bed as the large screen and high resolution makes reading at night very easy on the eyes. My Nexus 10 is also my gaming device. There isn't a single game (except solitare) on my Nexus 7.. My Nexus 10 is packed with them.. I never have to worry about bad performance and even simple games like Angry Birds etc look phenomenal.
The difference between us being my iPhone works great so I can use it for things I could use the Nexus for. Lol it's funny that I bought it without a specific use in mind. I guess ill figure it out or return/sell it.

Personally I think it would be a bit much, but it's just down to personal preference. I have a Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. Thanks to the Nexus 7, I don't have anything at all really on my Gnex. Just music and a few daily apps. The Nexus 7 takes care of everything else, and it's also what I tinker around with for ROM's and Kernels.
So personally I would have no use for a Nexus 10, but that's just me. It would be fun to play around with for a few weeks, but I doubt I'd use it much after that. And due to it's size it would be home mostly - the N7 fits in my coat pocket which I really like about it.
I have the Nexus 4 and the 7. Plenty for me, I have considered buying a chinease iPhone clone (just to trick friends into thinking I got an iPhone) but there like 200$

You know, there's something still to be said of owning a device just for the sake of owning it.
Nothing wrong with keeping it around as a "toy" if you fail to find a particular use for it. That's assuming, of course, money isn't an issue. Far too many of us don't have that luxury these days...
yeah i think that's kinda why i wanted it. a toy to play with. i love gadgets. i love playing around with roms and such on android devices. i have to decide whether it was smart to spend the money or not though lol.

The 7 is a great developer device... If you like fooling around with things and customizing them until your heart is content, then you will love the nexus 7. I personally find no need for a tablet as big as the nexus 10 / Ipad, my laptop is faster than hell with 8 gigs of ram and a solid state drive so if i need something more than my 7 I use that. After buying the 7 I don't think I will buy any android device that doesn't say nexus on it though, it makes my galaxy s3 look outdated.
LOL, I have an iPad 3, Nexus 7, Galaxy S3, Touchpad, LG Revolution and a Droid X.
That is probably overkill, but whatever's clever!

Do you actually use all of those? Do you have specific uses for them? I dunno I'm thinking I should return it because I could use the money for something I actually need.

Lol, I really just use my Nexus 7, S3 and iPad. The other ones from time to time. If you don't have a need for it, and could use the money elsewhere, I say return it.
All of these things really are toys/wants, not really necessities.
True. The fact that I feel super guilty about buying it means I probably should return it.

What do you use your nexus for vs your iPad?

Honestly? I really use both devices for the same thing. Some games, web browsing, email, Facebook, twitter, Flipboard, Google+, etc, etc. I really have found myself using the Nexus a lot more because of the form factor. It is so tiny and easy to carry around, and is very powerful.
So really you could get rid of the iPad and be fine

Thinking about buying one

I'm thinking about buying anexus7 . do you guys think it is still a good buy? Should I wait? I like the idea of a nexus 10 but the dual core CPU compared to a quad to me does not seem right. Suggestions?

Quad core does not 'always' mean better than dual core. If I had a chance (the money) to buy a nexus 10, I definitely would.
In my opinion android isn't even optimized properly for quad core, its not needed.... My nexus 7 VERY rarely needs to put use to more than two cores. The two cores of the nexus 10 are powerful ones
Not saying the nexus 7 isn't still worth buying. If I didn't have a nexus 7, I'd still end up buying one its a great device and does everything I need easily, while having a smaller screen size. (Which is perfect for me)
Press thanks if I helped ~ Nexus7/ParanoidAndroid/M-Kernel
Another should I? LOL
Well...to add something more....
The n7 is awesome. Period. If you want more awesome....spend way more, or wait for new devices.
Honestly ....people keep asking this, and its up to you. I bought one at Christmas cause its cheap and arguably the best 7" out there.
Budget, desperation and size preferences make this an apples to oranges discussion.
Not being a Dink, but seriously ....read the many threads that exist with the same question. Might help you.
People have stated their opinions on this in lots of similar threads.
Good luck, if you get one....enjoy!

I got my nexus about 3weeks ago. I do love it. But i got my so the samsung galaxy tab 2. It has things likw better. It is dual core vs quad. Bur i dknt feel any performance difference. It has sd card slot. 2 cameras. Both are better than the one camera on nexus.

^ this. already into march, a case could certainly be made for holding off a few months until new devices are unveiled, like the much anticipated successor to the nexus 7 (this would be my course of action if i didn't already have an n7). but if you need a tablet now, you can't really beat throwing down $200 for this beast.
I disagree on the N10. Power wise, the Dual core snapdragon is faster... but since it is pushing that insane resolution, it is about the same speed, or laggier, then the N7.
This is why I think uber high resolutions are a waste. Useless number game with no benefit. Just a waste of resources.
The N10 has some nice features like HDMI out but 7" and price is right on the N7. The N7 has a super high DPI. Don't upgrade something that doesn't need upgrading.
This is why the Transformer 300 is faster then the Prime, different res.
I'd buy the N7 again... and I did. We have 4 of them. And I just bought 30 for a job.

For me the N7 hits my sweet spot in terms of performance, prize and size! :good:
I'm in the same boat. I know I definitely want a Nexus tablet to replace my crappy PlayBook but I think I'm going to hold off to see what is unveiled at Google I/O before making a decision. If a successor is released I will buy that instead.
I was thinking about selling my TF700+Dock for a Nexus 7, but then again the Nexus 7 Successor should be coming out later this year. May just wait for that.
Will miss the Transformer though because of the keyboard dock (extra batt life) and it propping the screen up for viewing. Just couldn't stand the laggy IO of the TF700 though. I was reading a few other threads on here about the current Nexus 7's IO being a bottleneck, but I'm sure it's nowhere as bad as the TF700s.

I agree! I love the size of this. It's basically pocketable, even with the Sharkk keyboard case I bought. I haven't touched my iPad in three weeks since I bought it.
What's with all these "Should I buy?" threads?
Look. If you want to buy it, buy it. If you don't, then don't. How are we supposed to know your needs and what you'll be using it for? Watch some videos (there are around 3 million on YouTube) for the N7 and make the choice yourself. It's just a $200 tablet, not an Aston Martin DBS.

Hi, after owning the asus TF201 for over a year now, I also wanted to change to the nexus 7 3g.
I had several problems with the TF201 (laggy wifi, laggy bluetooth, no gps, bad overall performance). During the last year I started hating asus for this design flaw.
Now i noticed, that the N7 is also produced by asus. Should I really try another product of this company?
However, yesterday I wanted to set my order.
Fortunately I found some posts about a stuttering when streaming the audio by bluetooth and additional wifi usage. Some have this stuttering, some others report that their wifi-speed drops near zero.
For me that all sounds like the same strange problems I had with the TF201 (always thought the only reason for my problems was the aluminium-case of the TF201).
Now I'm really dissapointed. The benefit of the N7 3G would be the mobility and the additional connectivity.
I also know that the nexus is a really cheap device. Nevertheless the main-functions should work.
What do you think is the reason for this bluetooth audio stuttering? Software based or really a crappy hardware (I trust asus wouldn't mind).
It all depends. I don't remember reading about a lot of people having Bluetooth problems on a stock device. Those of us who have it are the ones usually on custom ROM's. For example I'm on Paranoid Android 3+ and it's known to have Bluetooth issues. There is also a fix for it but I didn't bother as I never use Bluetooth.
Bottom line is, most people don't have these problems. What you're reading here is a great majority of people who only have problems. That's why they're here, because they're looking around for help. Millions of users I'm sure are perfectly happy with their N7's.
