Softkeys/Navigation Bar mod for car install idea - Nexus 7 General

This is an idea I had while trying to get use to my tablet as a head unit. I found it very annoying that I had to switch screens to change the volume or tracks.
I wanted to see if anyone would think it would be a good idea to add a few buttons to the navigation bar like a skip back, forward, play/pause, volume up/down.
I'm trying to figure it out myself but I'm not the greatest programmer so I figured if I shared my idea someone might might be able to figure it out.
This is what I was thinking!

I have almost finished an app which will add next/previous/play and many other things to the soft button bar. Maybe I'll add volume controls too. For the moment the app was planned with the new bar style in mind ( aka not the omni bar seen from 3.0 to 4.1 which was abandoned in 4.2) but I think a little tweak will render it compatible.
I'll keep you updated.

Same issue here.
same for me, no more fancy landscape layout
Everything is still the same on mine.
Mine changed to.
It still works in landscape and when I touch an article it shifts the whole feed down, and displays the article on top of the feed.
I actually like it better.
I hate the new setup. I liked having the side by side panes.

Agile Lock Screen - CM7

Guys, saw someone else post this in the Development forum and thought I would post here. Basically the sense 3.0 Lockscreen but I cannot seem to get it to work. I'm guessing it's something within my settings but if one of you gets it working please let me know. Always nice to have options!

I like the ripple lock :-D
I have it working. Click on the app in your app drawer and then click start. Thats it! I think I may buy it that way I can adjust everything. For those who bought it, you can change the icons right?

thats strange...try uninstalling and reisntall it or you can try a restart of your phone. something goofy is acting up. I haven't seen too many complains like that in the reviews so I would try one of those things I mentioned.

Interestingly enough, when I disable the Status Bar in the Agile Lock settings everything works as it should. Of course this is only available in the paid version.

Is it suppose to unlock the screen by pressing the menu key? Mine does, just checking.
Menu unlock is not checked, I didnt try it without wake lock so maybe its cm9 thing.

Well... since jokersax provided mirrors to those files I will put down my mirrors tomorow.
Hopefully we wont need then soon.
great work, i do have one thought though, maybe rather change the "settings" button to the apps buttons, since ics doesnt have a settings button by itself, and the search button is quite useful at times.
Volume rocker already has its own settings switch, so sooner or later it will be built in.
Remapping soft keys switch is a good idea for older phone, since new ics guidelines are no physical buttons. But thinking more about, which apk you will assign for a button that is a house drawing? Always the launcher I think. The same for the back and search buttons. Menu is the more "plastic" button.
btw, vol MOD working good for turls v6. Didn't test it to jokers beta.

Cool Jelly Bean trick!!!

I was just playing around with my Nexus 7 and I came across a neat and convenient trick to dispose of a app from the app drawer that you may have mistakenly selected and you only get three options uninstall, app info or simply drop the app on the home screen of your Nexus device. Well, there's a fourth option! Simply long press a app from your home screen or app drawer. Then, fling your finger that's holding down the app down up and release! That's it! From the home screen you don't have to take a app all of the way up to the white x remove then red release delete. From the bottom or where ever that app is on your screen you want to remove or replace, just press and hold the app you want to remove, fling your finger in motion down then up release and watch it fly away off of your screen! I think this only works with Jelly Bean, but this my friend is very convenient!

I can add another cool trick: slide up from the bottom of the screen where the 3 buttons are to bring up the Google search. Neat.

It shows a lockscreen-style circle for that. Kinda unnecessary, but cool. A quick swipe up from the home button works just as well.

There's an easter egg in the settings app. Go into "about tablet". Tap the version number many times. After that, press and hold the Jelly Bean.

If you have history, it will show more information cards.

[HOW TO] Enable Navigation/Softkey bar

Hey yall. After trying many methods of enable the soft keys which i really like my self, i finaly found out whats messing it up.
in /system in build.prop there is a bit of code which looks like that in the screenshot. my problem was i kept adding code when i simply needed to change the existing code to 0 instead of 1. as shown in the screenshot
also as you can see they work in the xda app. but the buttons dont work in any other app.
anyone know why? i tried changing resolution in build prop and nothing. so i need some help.
So again. My problem is that i cant get the nav bar to work all the time.
Okay um. Attempted to change DPI in build prop. It did work and change DPI but softkeys still only work on the xda app.
I'm thinking maybe disabling hw capatative buttons will fix the problem.

after doing some research, all i figured out was that i would have to decompile and modify the framework-res.apk...
even though i have experience with making apps, i get so lost in google's apps since they arent compiled with classes, its all pure xml and all of it doesnt make sense, so if anyone could, please, figure out what to do in the framework res, to make the nav bar work better, id be very grateful
you can find it at /system/framework
thanks
Well nice find so far! I really like the idea of on screen soft keys but what other use would it have that we can't get from the 3 hardware one's we've got? Does the screen feel crowded, because I imagine that with the thickness of them it'd be pretty cramped

Well you could give it a go and see what its like when running the xda app. Unless it works normal.
Um..screen isn't really crowded. Its about two status bars thick. Uses? Um...I know it has a recent app button. And if you're using a keyboard it will give you the option to minimize it. Other than that its just a nexus feel. And once you enable it you can use apps or xposed installer to have them minimized and you can toggle them like a status bar when ever you need it.

Well an odexed ROM basically prevents any modifications to the firmware or any major graphic ui change but in turn opens apps faster so I'm guessing that's the problem
That could be the problem.
Stock ROM works really well on my device so I'm not changing it till we get cm.
But I'm just wondering why it won't let the nav bar be persistent, even though I addad a persist command to it. And only works on the xda app
Sent from my HTC first using xda app-developers app
I think I figured out the problem. The framework-res.apk manages the overall layout of android, I just need to figure out which if the 600 xml files does that and give the nav bar a bottom margin.

Major find or not I've found out that the app also works with wordrefernce.com it's an old app. I found out today in French class lol but for some reason the on screen soft keys don't work with the premium xda app. Also I should say that there seems to be a 1 second lag when pressing the on screen keys. Unlike the hardware ones that are instant. I've also got lag everywhere else in the phone.. Don't know if this is a side effect

Personal opinion. If you want a nexus feel then you would use it. But its gonna tale a while till I figure out what's wrong. I'm still working with framework-res.apk at the moment

see, i sold my broke first and when i was doing a factory reset and testing to make sure none of my info was present, the nav keys became persistent
So to make the be active 24/7 you MUST DO a factory reset....or maybe just a dalvik wipe, but i did a full reset and they worked fine.
you need to write script (i don't the commands) to enable it after qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
Auto Hide Soft Keys 's Spoof Soft Keys option can enable it via hack, so there is a way to activate it on boot when it doesn't show
